The difference between coins is not merely a questionof the metal used to make them. A coin’s qualitydepends on the artistic excellence of the engraving andthe effort involved in the preparation of minting toolsand blanks. UNCIRCULATED QUALITYUncirculated coins correspond to the quality of the normal euro circulation coins produced by the Austrian Mint, which have successfully passed all quality controls. Think of them as top quality table wine, for which ‘normal’ is on no account a substitute for ‘average’.

SPECIAL UNCIRCULATED QUALITYAs early strikes in a series struck from a new die, which are individually quality checked and packed with care immediately after minting, Special Uncirculated coins are the numismatic equivalent of quality ‘reserve’ wine.

PROOF QUALITYThe fruit of the very highest level of minting craftsman-ship and processing, Proof quality coins are the ‘Grand reserve’, or the crème de la crème, of the numismatic world. Only after 22 different high-precision preparato-ry steps is the die used to strike the first blank, which is then subjected to the most rigorous technical demands.

An agile amphibian with smooth, moist skin and powerful ankles, the frog is capable of jumping great distances. As the old year draws to a close and the new one is about to begin, it is only natural to look wistfully over our shoulders at the past before turning our attentions to the year ahead. To celebrate the 650th anniversary of the founding of the Austrian National Library, the Austrian Mint went back deep into the Middle Ages, where we came across the lustrous head of a lion on the cover of what was effectively the first ever book in the library's impressive collection.

Commissioned by Albert III, Duke of Austria, the book is a goldtranscription and illumination of the four Gospels of the New Testament by catholic priest Johannes von Troppau. Originating in Germany during the Renaissance, the ‘Osterhase’ (literally the Easter hare) was a folkloric figure among the followers of Martin Luther that judged whether children were behaving correctly at the beginning of Eastertide. Today the Easter Bunny is a far less judgmental creature who brings eggs for all children irrespective of their behaviour. No ordinary rabbit, the one featuring on our Easter Coin 2018 is from a historical design by the ceramic designer and sculp-tor Michael Powolny (1871-1954), co-founder of the ‘WienerKeramik’, part of the legendary ‘Wiener Werkstätte’ workshops,which evolved from the Vienna Secession art movement. One of the most popular and enduring songs of all time celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2018. Entitled ‘Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht’ in the original German, the Christmas carol Silent Night has been translated into 140 different languages and recorded by everyone from Elvis Presley to the Vienna Boys’ Choir. It was even sung simultaneously in German, French and English in the trenches of the Western Front during the Christmas truce of 1914.

Silent Night was written and first performed by village priest Joseph Mohr and schoolmaster and organist Franz Xaver Gruber on Christmas Eve 1818 in the parish church of St Nicholas in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. The church was destroyed by flooding in the early 20th century but in its place stands a memorial chapel. Today people from all over the world visit the tiny chapel, which is depicted on this delightful 200th anniversary coin.

The 2018 coin in our best-selling Silver Niobium series is dedicated to the Anthropocene. For almost 12,000 years we have been living in the Holocene geologic period, which began at the end of the last ice age. Although this is the period in which all human civilisation has developed, expertsnow agree that humanity’s impact on the Earth is so profound that a new geologic epoch – the Anthropocene – needs to be declared. Examples of this impact are the radioactive elements dispersed across the planet by nuclear testing, plastic pollution and the soot produced by fossil-fuel power stations. Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler and Viktor Frankl were the founders of three different schools of psychotherapy, the scientific discipline established in Vienna in the 20th

century. Freud (1856-1939) was the father of psychoanalysis, Adler (1870-1937) founded individual psychology, while Frankl (1905-1997) was the founder of logotherapy. This fascinating three-coin series celebrates those three schools of psychotherapy.

The second of the three coins is dedicated to Alfred Adler. Originally an ophthalmologist, Adler became a general practitioner before an invitation to join the psychoanalytic movement led him to become a colleague of Sigmund Freud. After his break from that movement, Adler founded the Society for Individual Psychology in 1912, which contended that the social realm is as important to psychology as the internal realm. He did not see people as being determined by their instincts, but rather as free beings who have to solve the cultural responsibilities that life imposes on them. Alfred Adler’s teachings had a major impact on the development of psychology and psychotherapy in the 20th century.

SIGMUND FREUD

Form his experience as a general practitioner, Alfred Adler concluded that every patient should be viewed as a unique entity, as an individual, and be treated and understood as such. This idea made individual psychology a viable alternative to psychoanalysis.

From 1927, Adler was a regular visitor to the United States, where his optimistic view of humanity achieved great popularity. In the early 1930s, Adler’s Jewish heritage led to the closure of his Austrian clinics and he left Austria for a professorship at the Long Island College of Medicine. THE MALLARD

Considered a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the non-migratory mallard is a very adaptable species of dabbling duck. With a glossy bottle-green head and a white collar, the breeding male (drake) mallard is unmistakable.
