Training Meeting Industry Demand
Despite the period of uncertainty brought by the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), the level of training undertaken by the industry has remained strong. Many builders have moved away from their normal areas of operation to those where demand currently exists and, as a result, priorities for skills development have shifted. These areas are reflected in the range and number of courses on offer in our new and comprehensive Training Directory.
Occupational health and safety remains the area of greatest demand. With the Victorian Government requiring greater accountability from contractors, each week our Certificate III in Occupational Health and Safety courses are filled with builders and subcontractors. This course opens the door to lucrative infrastructure projects and can help with securing Commercial Limited registration.
Domestic Builder Registration continues to be a key driver in the residential sector, as many practitioners seek to take advantage of the rush by new home buyers to access first home buyer grants and secure low interest loans. With the Certificate IV in Building and Construction being the accredited program recognised by the Building Practitioners Board, participants are booking-up to undertake this training offered both during the day and after hours at our training centres in East Melbourne, Clayton and now Mornington, and through our partner providers in regional Victoria. Over 400 individuals complete this program annually, with numbers expected to rise again during 2010.
We all know that training proximity and timing are key factors when deciding to commit to professional development. To address this we have introduced online and distance training options for selected courses. Confident, independent learners can undertake the Certificate III in Occupational Health and Safety by course work or complete three of the in-demand Builder Registration Course modules online via the Master Builders website. eLearning done well can open up training opportunities, particularly for those in remote
areas. We will be continuing to develop online training options throughout 2010 but face to face delivery will remain our priority as the most suitable and effective approach for most in the industry.
I have touched on just a few of the training programs offered and initiatives in train. Take the time to carefully read through this Directory so that you can strategically plan for your and your employees’ career development.
In addition, you can earn while you learn by gaining AdvantageCard points on enrolment or, as a Master Builders member and Incolink Contributor, access Master Builders training free of charge.
*Free and subsidised training may cease if no further funds are received from Incolink.

Speaking from Experience
The Master Builders courses have enabled me to build my specialist skills whilst obtaining recognition for the expertise I had already gained. These qualifications have opened up new career advancement opportunities in the industry.
Gavin Shaw, HSE Advisor, Grocon Systems and Plant
I now have a set of qualifications that have given me the range of knowledge and skills that I need to take on construction management and planning roles. If you are to be on top of the latest regulatory changes and approaches to management then formal training is critical.
Stanko Ratkovic, Site Manager, The Nicol Group
For Advice

Training and career pathwaysThe offering of career pathways through training can be a key strategy for rewarding and retaining your staff.Master Builders Training Services works to provide these opportunities through clearly identified training pathways. A short course or Certificate level program should no longer be seen as a one off professional development opportunity.
