Massachusetts ll Geotechnical Evaluation and Slope Restabilization [Case Study]

1
Client: Town of Royalston Location: Royalston, Massachusetts Slope Stability Assessment and Design GeoInsight, Inc. (GeoInsight) assisted the Town of Royalston with an assessment and design to stabilize a steep slope (typically between 1 horizontal to1 vertical [1:1] to as steep as 1:2) located between Route 68 and School Street in South Royalston, Massachusetts. The existing slope exhibited significant erosion that had undermined existing stone retaining walls and caused the partial collapse of a section of School Street. The eroded areas included an abutting property with frontage on School Street and Route 68. Geotechnical Evaluation and Restabilization Activities GeoInsight designed a series of geogrid-reinforced, gabion-faced terraces to stabilize the slope and included reusing existing granite blocks where feasible to match existing walls that had been damaged. Construction Feasibility Evaluation The design accommodated construction of new retaining walls and repair of existing walls. A geotechnical investigation was conducted and evaluated, slope stability analyses were performed, and construction sequence and difficult construction access were considered. Restabilization Activities Included: accommodating surface water drainage from the road; repair of damaged road areas; and traffic control during the repair work. Bid Package Preparation and Oversight GeoInsight prepared a bid package for the work including a Request for Proposal, Design Drawings, Bid Form, General Conditions, Contract, and Technical Specifications. After a contractor was hired, GeoInsight attended site meetings to address possible value engineering changes and performed limited oversight of the work.
