Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

In the Gospel according to St. John we are told that the beloved disciple took the Blessed Mother to his home. This week, we at St. Patrick will embody that Gospel passage in a special way, because all of us who are beloved children of God and desire to be disciples of Jesus will receive a replica of Our Lady of Aparecida to be kept at our parish for the veneration of the faithful.Cardinal Raymundo Damasceno Assis, Archbishop of Aparecida and President of the Brazilian Conference of Catholic Bishops is visiting Miami and has brought with him a replica of this advocation of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a gift.This replica, which the Cardinal will crown at our parish on Saturday, September 6th, will remain at St. Patrick so that all those who have a devotion to her, especially Brazilians may come to honor her and pray for her intercession.

The presence of Our Lady of Aparecida in our parish is also a reminder that the present time requires that we become missionaries to the world. The Blessed Mother is both a disciple and a missionary, going in haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth.In May 2007, the Latin American bishops met in the Shrine of Our Lady in Aparecida, Brazil, together with Pope Benedict XVI for the Fifth General Conference of Latin American Bishops. At that meeting they issued a call to a “continental mission” and reminded all of us that to have encountered Christ in our lives is the best thing that could have ever happened and to announce Him to others, our greatest joy. They also pointed out that we are all in a process of conversion, we all need to be evangelized, because the Gospel message is for all, it is constantly new and always challenging us. Thus, in the Church, all of us are walking together towards greater communion with Jesus and all of us are called to proclaim His love to the world. Every Christian is a disciple and a missionary. Every one of us follows Jesus Christ true God and true man and every one of us is sent to the world to announce Him. Of course, each one of us fulfills this mission in a different way. Some go to far away places leaving everything behind in order to proclaim the love of God made manifest in Christ to those who have not even heard his name. The vast majority among us are missionaries in the ordinary affairs of life, proclaiming the love of God by living in the world in a way that is consistent with our baptism.This program for the missionary transformation of the Church was laid out in a document published by the Latin American bishops with the approval of Pope Benedict XVI commonly known as Aparecida. However, Aparecida is much more than a written document it entails a renewal of the Church.

Since the election of Pope Francis in 2013, he has been trying to bring this missionary transformation to the universal Church. In the spirit of Aparecida, in his Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, The Joy of the Gospel,he has issued an invitation and a challenge:“Each Christian and every community must discern the path that the Lord points out, but all of us are asked to obey his call to go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the “peripheries” in need of the light of the Gospel.The Gospel joy which enlivens the community of disciples is a missionary joy. The seventy-two disciples felt it as they returned from their mission (cf. Lk 10:17). Jesus felt it when he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and praised the Father for revealing himself to the poor and the little ones (cf. Lk 10:21). It was felt by the first converts who marveled to hear the apostles preaching “in the native language of each” (Acts 2:6) on the day of Pentecost. This joy is a sign that the Gospel has been proclaimed and is bearing fruit. Yet the drive to go forth and give, to go out from ourselves, to keep pressing forward in our sowing of the good seed, remains ever present. The Lord says: “Let us go on to the next towns that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out” (Mk 1:38). Once the seed has been sown in one place, Jesus does not stay behind to explain things or to perform more signs; the Spirit moves him to go forth to other towns.God’s word is unpredictable in its power. The Gospel speaks of a seed, which, once sown, grows by itself, even as the farmer sleeps (Mk 4:26-29). The Church has to accept this unruly freedom of the word, which accomplishes what it wills in ways that surpass our calculations and ways of thinking.

The Church’s closeness to Jesus is part of a common journey; “communion and mission are profoundly interconnected”.In fidelity to the example of the Master, it is vitally important for the Church today to go forth and preach the Gospel to all: to all places, on all occasions, without hesitation, reluctance or fear. The joy of the Gospel is for all people: no one can be excluded. That is what the angel proclaimed to the shepherds in Bethlehem: “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people (Lk 2:10). The Book of Revelation speaks of “an eternal Gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tongue and tribe and people” (Rev 14:6).The Church which “goes forth” is a community of missionary disciples who take the first step, who are involved and supportive, who bear fruit and rejoice. An evangelizing community knows that the Lord has taken the initiative, he has loved us first, and therefore we can move forward, boldly take the initiative, go out to others, seek those who have fallen away, stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast. Such a community has an endless desire to show mercy, the fruit of its own experience of the power of the Father’s infinite mercy.”

En el Evangelio según san Juan nos cuentan que el discípulo amado llevó a la Santísima Virgen a su casa. En cierta medida, esta semana en St. Patrick encarnaremos este pasaje evangélico de una manera especial, porque todos nosotros que somos hijos amados de Dios y que queremos ser discípulos de Jesús recibiremos una réplica de Nuestra Señora de Aparecida que quedará en nuestra parroquia para la veneración de los fieles.El cardenal Raymundo Damasceno Assis, Arzobispo de Aparecida y Presidente de la Conferencia de obispos católicos de Brasil visita Mi-ami y ha traído de regalo una réplica de esta advocación de la Santísima Virgen María. Esta imagen, que el cardenal coronará el sábado 6 de septiembre, quedará en St. Patrick para que todos los que tienen devoción a ella, especialmente los brasileños puedan venir a honrarla y rezar pidiendo su intercesión.

La presencia de Nuestra Señora de Aparecida en nuestra parroquia también nos recuerda que los tiempos actuales requieren que seamos misioneros en el mundo. La Santísima Virgen es tanto discípula como misionera, saliendo presurosa a visitar a su prima Isabel.En mayo del 2007, los obispos latinoamericanos se congregaron en el santuario de Nuestra Señora en Aparecida, Brasil, junto con el papa Benedicto XVI para la V Asamblea general del episcopado latinoamericano. En esa reunión hicieron un llamado a una “misión continental” y nos recordaron a todos que haber encontrado a Cristo en nuestra vida es lo mejor que nos ha podido pasar y anunciarlo a otros es nuestra mayor alegría.También señalaron que todos estamos en un proceso de conversión, todos necesitamos ser evangelizados, porque el mensaje del Evangelio es para todos, siempre renovado y siempre nos desafía. Por lo tanto, en la Iglesia todos caminamos juntos hacia una mayor comunión con Jesús y todos somos llamados a proclamar Su amor al mundo. Todo cristiano es discípulo y misionero. Cada uno de nosotros que seguimos a Jesucristo, verdadero Dios y verdadero hombre, es enviado al mundo para anunciarlo. Por supuesto, cada uno de nosotros cumple esta misión de manera diferente. Algunos van a lugares lejanos, dejándolo todo atrás para proclamar el amor de Dios manifestado en Cristo a aquellos que ni siquiera han escuchado su nombre. La gran mayoría de nosotros somos misioneros en las circunstancias habituales de nuestra vida, proclamando el amor de Dios a través de nuestra vida en el mundo de manera coherente con nuestro bautismo.Este programa de transformación misionera de la Iglesia fue formulado en un documento publicado por los obispos latinoamericanos con la aprobación del Papa Benedicto XVI que se conoce comúnmente como Aparecida. Sin embargo, Aparecida es mucho más que un documento escrito, implica la renovación de la Iglesia

Desde la elección del Papa Francisco en el 2013, éste ha estado tratando de implementar esta transformación misionera en la Iglesia univer-sal. En el espíritu de Aparecida, en su Exhortación apostólica Evangelii Gaudium, ha hecho una invitación y ha lanzado un desafío:“Cada cristiano y cada comunidad discernirá cuál es el camino que el Señor le pide, pero todos somos invitados a aceptar este llamado: salir de la propia comodidad y atreverse a llegar a todas las periferias que necesitan la luz del Evangelio.La alegría del Evangelio que llena la vida de la comunidad de los discípulos es una alegría misionera. La experimentan los setenta y dos discípulos, que regresan de la misión llenos de gozo (cf. Lc 10,17). La vive Jesús, que se estremece de gozo en el Espíritu Santo y alaba al Padre porque su revelación alcanza a los pobres y pequeñitos (cf. Lc 10,21). La sienten llenos de admiración los primeros que se convierten al escuchar predicar a los Apóstoles «cada uno en su propia lengua» (Hch 2,6) en Pentecostés. Esa alegría es un signo de que el Evangelio ha sido anunciado y está dando fruto. Pero siempre tiene la dinámica del éxodo y del don, del salir de sí, del caminar y sembrar siempre de nuevo, siempre más allá. El Señor dice: «Vayamos a otra parte, a predicar también en las poblaciones vecinas, porque para eso he salido» (Mc 1,38). Cuando está sembrada la semilla en un lugar, ya no se detiene para explicar mejor o para hacer más signos allí, sino que el Espíritu lo mueve a salir hacia otros pueblos.

La Palabra tiene en sí una potencialidad que no podemos predecir. El Evangelio habla de una semilla que, una vez sembrada, crece por sí sola también cuando el agricultor duerme (cf. Mc 4,26-29). La Iglesia debe aceptar esa libertad inaferrable de la Palabra, que es eficaz a su manera, y de formas muy diversas que suelen superar nuestras previsiones y romper nuestros esquemas.La intimidad de la Iglesia con Jesús es una intimidad itinerante, y la comunión «esencialmente se configura como comunión misionera». Fiel al modelo del Maestro, es vital que hoy la Iglesia salga a anunciar el Evangelio a todos, en todos los lugares, en todas las ocasiones, sin demo-ras, sin asco y sin miedo. La alegría del Evangelio es para todo el pueblo, no puede excluir a nadie. Así se lo anuncia el ángel a los pastores de Belén: «No temáis, porque os traigo una Buena Noticia, una gran alegría para todo el pueblo» (Lc 2,10). El Apocalipsis se refiere a «una Buena Noticia, la eterna, la que él debía anunciar a los habitantes de la tierra, a toda nación, familia, lengua y pueblo» (Ap 14,6).La Iglesia en salida es la comunidad de discípulos misioneros que primerean, que se involucran, que acompañan, que fructifican y festejan. «Primerear»: sepan disculpar este neologismo. La comunidad evangelizadora experimenta que el Señor tomó la iniciativa, la ha primereado en el amor; y, por eso, ella sabe adelantarse, tomar la iniciativa sin miedo, salir al encuentro, buscar a los lejanos y llegar a los cruces de los caminos para invitar a los excluidos. Vive un deseo inagotable de brindar misericordia, fruto de haber experimentado la infinita misericordia del Padre y su fuerza difusiva.”
