Mashpee Women’s Club Mission Statement

The mission of this Club is to bring all women of Mashpee and surrounding towns into a social environment, provide educational and recreational programs to the benefit of our members, and charitable programs to support our towns. The Club’s first meeting was December 9, 1997.

The winter months were a lot kinder

to us this year. We had that incongruous snowstorm on the first day of spring and snow in the first days of April, but we are now safely ensconced in the spring season. Our snowbird members are

returning, and we look forward to the full force of our membership participating in the club activities.

We had some new and different programs for the first third of the year beginning in January with our own bingo game with numerous home gifts as prizes for the winners. Our February luncheon featured Stephanie Miele, a local vocalist who sang “Songs from the Heart” to help celebrate St. Valentine’s Day and its tribute to love. Our March program brought us Mead Faciano from the Museum of Fine Arts with a slide show presentation of the MFA’s successful “Art in Bloom” exhibit where artists arrange a floral interpretation of a number of paintings at the museum. Fluffy Winner, a volunteer in this program, made beautiful arrangements of notable paintings which became part of our raffle prizes.

Our April program involves a demonstration of the latest kitchen gadgets by Le Roux which will make us more inventive and successful in the kitchen! Circle the dates for our May luncheon (May 17) -- a “British tea” lunch and baby shower. Bring a baby gift to be donated to A Baby Center in Hyannis. Then our annual June fashion show and silent auction will be on June 21. It will be a fundraiser for our scholarship program. Through your generous donations, we have added an additional scholarship, so we now offer two scholarships for Mashpee High School seniors.

Our “Getting to Know You” speakers have been informative and interesting: we heard our new town manager Rodney Collins in January, Cliff Long of the Falmouth Hospital Auxiliary in February and Fire Chief Thomas Rullo in March. In April, we will have

Tracy Johnson from WE CAN, an organization that provides various kinds of support services to women.

We have also been working closely with Jennifer Perry, Director of Catering Services at New Seabury Country Club, to refine our menus — trying some new entrees while maintaining our favorites. As you can imagine, it is impossible to please everybody! We are lucky to have such a devoted staff at New Seabury. They are also committed to providing an alternative lunch to those with documented food allergies if notified in advance.

Our spring Games Day is scheduled for May 23; a flyer listing all the games and a registration form are included in this newsletter. There is something for everybody, so come out and join the fun!

We recently had a new member coffee hosted by Teri Sweatman. It is wonderful to meet and converse with these new members. A familiar theme in all these coffees is the expressed desire to connect with other women, to forge new friendships and to participate in both recreational and charitable projects. A perfect match with the MWC!

In an effort to increase membership, we have completed a new club brochure, courtesy of Lisbeth Dineen. We will be distributing them through a variety of venues including realtors, nail and hair salons, and other businesses to attract new and existing Mashpee residents. Recruitment pays off whether on an individual basis or with a larger campaign. As a result, we are seeing a rise in our numbers!

Please let us know if you have ideas for a new activity, a new program etc. We are a social organization that is alive and changing.

Enjoy your spring and hope to see you at our

luncheons!

A warm welcome to the following new members who have joined the Mashpee Women’s Club since the Winter newsletter:

Kathy Clapp Karen Keelan Ingrid Dooling Mary Ann O'Brien

And welcome back to Gudrun Turner, Laura Lincoln, and Catherine Trainor

Laura Kuzia, MWC Membership and Directory Committee

The Mashpee Women’s Club hosts a luncheon on the third Tuesday of each month. The cost is $20 for members and $25 for guests. Checks payable to the Mashpee Women’s Club should be mailed to Mashpee Women’s Club, P.O. Box 1613, Mashpee, MA 02649 to arrive at least 7 days before the luncheon. Luncheons are held on the third Tuesday of each month at the New Seabury Country Club at noon each month unless noted differently.

********************** As always, Sue Riley continues to take donations for the Mashpee Food Pantry at every luncheon. Cash donations preferred but products are also always appreciated.

********************** A segment at each monthly luncheon includes a five-minute “Getting to Know You” (GTKY) presentation prior to the luncheon program introducing a community speaker from a local organization or business.

April 19: Program by LeRoux Kitchen of Falmouth – Learn how to use all those great kitchen gadgets! The Getting to Know You speaker will be Tracy Johnson of WE CAN. WE CAN empowers Cape women of all ages undergoing challenging life transitions.

May 17: Bring a baby gift to our May Baby Shower Tea! All gifts will be donated to A Baby Center in Hyannis.

The Getting to Know You speaker will be Maureen O’Connor from Ahh Time Skin Lash Massage Studio. Helping girls and women look and feel their best has been Maureen’s passion for more than twenty years.

June 21: Annual fashion show and fundraiser, this year presenting the fashions from OZ Boutique located in Barnstable. From the outside, the OZ Boutique appears to be just another quaint building along scenic 6A, but inside, get ready for some wild fashion and international shopping fun!

SAVE THE DATE! The time has arrived! GOLF -- yes the season is just a few short weeks away,

and as in the past we are preparing for the Mashpee Women’s Club 2016 golf tournament to be held on June 17, 2016. Our goal this year is to not only have a wonderful day of golf but

Page 3: MASHPEE WOMEN’S CLUB Spring Newsletter FINAL.pdf · Page 3 Mashpee Women’s Club Newsletter Spring, 2016 to also be able to add to the club’s ... ng "Taylor the Latte Boy", a

to also be able to add to the club’s scholarship fund.

As you may have heard, Holly Ridge Golf Club has been sold and as always with new management, some things are bound to change. The good news is that we will be again having the tournament at Holly Ridge and have been assured that there will be golf carts for everyone.

We will have to increase our registration fee in order to cover new costs. Last year, we paid $55.00 plus $9.00 for a cart. This year we will include the cost of the cart ($13.00) as well as the slight increase in the food price. Our new fee will be an increase between 4 and 6 dollars.

We will do our best to keep the increase at a minimum.

We have met with the new owners, and I think everyone will be pleased at the changes they have made. Both are professional and come with some fun and innovative ideas to make sure everyone has a wonderful day.

We will be sending out additional information as we proceed with finalizing the time and price.

In the meantime, should you have any questions, feel free to contact Suzi Rego, chair, or Sue Riley, co-chair. Our contact information is in the directory.

January 19: I've not played bingo in years, and it was great fun to play again at January’s luncheon! Thanks to Jeanne Dennis and Janet Molloy for organizing the games and

keeping us all involved! We were also very pleased to have as our Getting to Know You Speaker Mashpee's Town Manager, Rodney Collins, who described his plans for Mashpee and the great staff that supports the town. I've not heard Rodney speak before, and I really liked his direct, down to earth approach to governing our beautiful town.

Many thanks to Peggy Youdelman and her cohorts who provided the beautiful Mardi Gras centerpieces. The meal was delicious, and we were able to send $119 from the 50/50 raffle to Homeless Not Hopeless in Hyannis, an organization that offers a helping hand to those in need of short and

long term help. It offers affordable, supportive housing, educational training and other tools to help our homeless become productive members of society

February 16: Vocalist Stephanie Miele accompanied by Nancy Wendlandt treated us to a wonderful combination of “Songs from the Heart” to help us celebrate Valentine’s Day. I must

admit to my favorite being "Taylor the Latte Boy", a contemporary song by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich. It is based on their experience with a barista at Starbucks, and is best known for being performed by Kristin Chenoweth. The GTKY speaker was Cliff Long, president of the Falmouth Hospital Auxiliary, and Sally Moore and Barbara Caron provided the beautiful centerpieces. Thanks to all who worked to make this luncheon and its program special!

March 15: Art in Bloom: The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, was the first museum in the United States to introduce their public to a show of art and flowers called “Art in Bloom”. Every spring,

about 50 of the Museum’s art objects are interpreted through floral arrangements. Art in Bloom is free to members, and is the busiest week of the year for the Museum. Thanks to presenters Meade Fasciano and Fluffy Winner for their amazing talented floral presentation! Meade has been affiliated with the MFA since 1998. Fluffy began

her career at the MFA as an Associate, where she was the Chair of Flowers and designed the

current Museum Flower Room.

Mashpee Fire Chief Tom Rullo was our Getting to Know You speaker. Many thanks to him for great home safety hints! And as always, many

thanks to our members for the beautiful centerpieces, this month created by Linda Gervich, Eileen Hansford and

Ginny Carroll.

On Tuesday, April 5, the Mashpee Women’s Club held its spring New Members’ Coffee to welcome recent additions to our group: Antoinette Brooks, Connie Richardson, Paula Fullerton, Ingrid Dooling, Kathy Clapp,

and MaryAnn O’Brien. Teri Sweatman opened her beautiful home for the event on a very cold, snowy day. Jean Boundy, president, told the group about many of the activities available for members to join. Hosting the gathering were Sigrid Howell and Jean Trexler, both of whom spoke about segments of MWC in which they are involved, some of which are the knitting club, book clubs, memoirs writing group, and dresses for Uganda. Each of the new members told a bit about themselves, their background, and how they came to join the Mashpee Women’s Club. We are pleased to welcome them to the Mashpee Women’s Club!

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE HELPED TO SUPPORT THE MASHPEE FOOD PANTRTY!

Dear Fellow Members,

Eight years ago when Deb Gasior became aware of the fact that the clients who are served by the Mashpee food pantry were not able to purchase personal items with their government subsidy, she began our commitment to the Mashpee food pantry.

For the last seven years, the generosity of our Mashpee Women’s Club members has provided the pantry with toilet paper, paper towels, feminine products, napkins, shampoo, tooth paste and even diapers for the babies.

Recently we learned that monetary donations are very welcome and that, in fact, our cash donations go a lot further because of the purchasing power of the pantry.

Your preference also seems to be cash over product and, as the present liaison between the club and the pantry, I have been able to present between $50 and $100 each month to them in your name.

Thank you to Deb for seeing the need and taking the initiative to answer it and thank you to the wonderful women of our club who continue to support the project. I continue to be your humble representative,

Sue Riley

Our Memoirs Group, which meets every other Friday at 10:00 am from September through June at the Mashpee Senior Center is thriving. We

enjoy writing and reading our stories together. We have room for one or two more women who are interested in joining us. It's an opportunity to give your children and grandchildren a gift they will cherish. Call Fran Giambarba at 508-539-2833 or email her at

The Madame DeFarge knitting group (Group 1) continues to make many items to donate for all ages. These items include hats,

blankets, and sweaters to the Baby Center Center in Hyannis, Emerson House in West Falmouth, and chemo caps for the Childrens’ Hospital in Boston and Mass General. We are currently working on items to donate to the MWC Baby Shower program in May. Besides all the knitting we are STILL solving all the problems of the world, but no one seems to be listening…

ONLY THREE MASHPEE COVERLETS ARE STILL

AVAILABLE!

This beautiful Mashpee coverlet designed by our own Debbie Gasior captures the history and spirit of Mashpee images. The Jacquard coverlet is woven in the USA, 100% cotton, pre-shrunk, colorfast, machine washable and dryable. You can own this beautiful Mashpee memento for only $25, the proceeds of which go to support MWC charities. If interested, please contact Debbie Gasior. Her contact information is in the directory.

The Flower/ Centerpiece Committee continues to be a great success! Members are having fun and enjoy being creative doing the arrangements

for the monthly luncheons. Many have used flowers from their own gardens, candles, lanterns, pumpkins, berries and they are lovely! This is a great way to get a little more involved in the MWC and have some fun. The commitment is only once or twice a year. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Laura

Kuzia or Janet Molloy (their contact information is in the directory).

We have many married women that come to our luncheons now, and I’m also pleased that we continue to get

new members. Our March Sunday Brunch at the Coonamessett Inn was a big success attended by 12 members! And despite the torrential

rain, we had a wonderful dinner at Oysters Too in April. All were in a great mood, and we had great conversation. Now that spring is finally here, we will venture out further and go to as many waterfront places as we can. On May 14, we will be lunching at the Old Yarmouth Inn. New people are always welcome. Please let me know if you would like to be added to the list for notifications of upcoming luncheons!

The Mashpee Women’s Club has been instrumental in helping member Jean Trexler with her mission to send dresses and t-shirts to Uganda many times each year not only by providing

dresses but also by spreading the word about this project. On display for the month of April at the Falmouth Library are 30 pillowcase dresses made by the Royal Cotuit Nursing Home on Rt. 28 in Mashpee. Last year, the residents at Royal Cotuit joined in and made 160 dresses! The display at the library showcases these very industrious seamstresses at the nursing home and shows off their efforts. If you are in the neighborhood, stop by the Falmouth Library and check out this great display!
