You’ve been networking like crazy and haven’t f ound a client, yet. You couldn’t close your last sale. How could you have aced your sales a month ago and now there’s nothing? Sound f amiliar? Every small business owner experiences business highs and lows. I know. I counsel many and here’s what I tell them: 1. It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. Your journey to success will teach you much. The joys will enhance your lif e and the disappointments will strengthen you – if you let them. 2. Learn how to handle the highs and lows of being in business and don’t let anything be a roadblock to your destination – success. Don’t stop doing what you need to do to get there. Clear the negative thoughts or they will destroy you. 3. Be aware of what your competition is doing to get customers but don’t let it bring you down. Think about a new niche that you can serve. Of f er something that your customer may need next that your competitor doesn’t of f er. If all else f ails, see if there is a way you can partner with them to of f er a service and split the marketing expenses- perhaps of f er the same service in dif f erent vicinities 4. Don’t hide behind a desk caught up in social media. You need to meet people f ace-to-f ace . Include traditional marketing strategies, too. 5. Personality has a lot to do with getting a sale. Are you upbeat, knowledgeable, prepared and organized? Have you perf ected your sales pitch so it’s delivered naturally? Are you f riendly and not aggressive? 6. Ignore negative advice f rom f amily and f riends who try to convince you to close your business and stop working so hard. Don’t let them put a guilt trip on you about your availability. What matters is that you are happy doing what you are doing. 7. Don’t let a bad client ruin your attitude. Learn what not to deal with the next time. 8. Take a serious look at your marketing strategies and determine what’s not working. Are you really building relationships through networking by keeping in contact with those you meet? Are you f ollowing up on leads and ref errals? Are you netweaving – making connections between businesses or businesses and prospects that could result in prof itable transactions? 9. Make sure you are staying in contact with your customers so they don’t f orget you. Call them to see how they are doing; send them your monthly newsletter. Mention a ref erral gif t f or those who bring business your way. 10. Ensure that your lif e is balanced. Schedule some time to spend with f amily and f riends. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. You’ll f eel ref reshed and ready to tackle work. 11. Start your day on a positive note. Read something motivational every day.
