Transcript of Mary Woodley--The american dream

BY MARY WOODLEY

The two works I am

using are “A

Nation’s Strength”

by Ralph W.

Emerson and “The

New Colossus” by

Emma Lazarus. The

themes I will be

focusing on are the

way the pieces are

written and their

view on the

American dream.

“A mighty woman with

a torch, whose flame is

imprisoned

lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles.”-

Emma Lazarus I think

this quotation speaks

of the strength of

America, and how

America welcomes

anyone, no matter who

they are, what they

did, or where they

came from.

“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she with silent lips. “Give me you tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,…”

“Brave men who work while others sleep, Who dare while others fly…

They build a nation’s pillars deep, And raise them to the sky.” I think

this quotation from “A Nation’s Strength” by Ralph W. Emerson says a

lot about the American dream. My view of the American dream is that

anyone who works hard will succeed. I believe that is what this

quotation is saying about America.
