We’ll miss you Ma, be happy wherever you are.” were the words that concluded the message from

Anya, daughter of the late Catherine Anne Blackshaw, whose funeral at Nambour and wake at the Top Café in Kenilworth were held on Wednesday 24 November 2010. They echoed the sentiments of everyone there.

Tributes flowed thick and fast at the funeral of this charismatic lady who passed away at home on the 15 November after a long illness. There were tears too, but most of all there was laughter at the antics Anna used to get up to during her entire life. Everyone had a story that brought gales of laughter to the normally solemn funeral chapel. Funeral Celebrant, Tim Goessling, said that he had never seen a funeral like that of Anna Blackshaw.

Anna was born to an aristocratic family, the Chirnsides who owned the famous ‘Werribee’ House near Melbourne. She believed that there could be the hint of a skeleton in her cupboard, in that her mother was a very good friend of the Duke of Gloucester.

Sent to boarding school at the age of four years, Anna’s strong personality, her ‘fiercely independent, rebellious, talented free spirit’ showed through even then. Tom Hampstead told of her father, John Ritchie, who wanted his unruly daughter to be a ‘lady’ by sending her to be a finishing school. One assignment was to make a vegetable roll. However her creativity of wrapping up a whole carrot in pastry was discovered and she ‘flunked’ the course when the roll was cut.

After this her desire to go to art school was finally achieved. This was followed by a jewellery making course. Sent to Europe by her father, Anna became a talented player of the Irish drum, the bodhrán. She married a well-known Irish artist, Basil Blackshaw. Both of them have work displayed in some of the leading galleries in Europe. Their daughter, Anya, her husband, David and son, Niall still live in Ireland.

On her return to Australia, Anna settled in the central coast of NSW, and discovered pottery, for which she became renowned during her years in Kenilworth. Eventually she

followed in the footsteps of her two old school friends to the Sunshine Coast and bought a property where she lived for the rest of her life at Walli Creek at Kenilworth.

Anna was always a lover of cats and dogs, especially Pug and Old English Bulldogs. Her animal caricatures which started with a wacky clay representation of her Bulldog (on display beside her coffin) became much sought after, especially after Anna entered them in the Kenilworth Celebrates! Art festival competition, and became the first sculptor to win the “People’s Choice” award. The then Mayor, Joe Natolie, bought a pair of her quirky animals.

Many tributes were paid to her closest friends, especially Tina, Neal and Karen, and others too numerous to mention, who helped unstintingly with her care during the last year of her life, a task that many mere mortals would shirk from, given Anna’s personality, temperament and pain.

Anna’s sacred place in Kenilworth became the table outside the library where, after smoking was banned at restaurants, she could indulge in her double passion of coffee and cigarettes. She could be seen ‘holding court’ several times a week right up to the end. A poignant message to Anna is the single rose that has been placed on that table.

Anna Blackshaw, will be long remembered in Kenilworth as a very talented artist, and everyone will have memories of this volatile, eccentric lady, and will miss her. Rest in Peace Anna. Photo below: Joellyn Sykes (left) and Pat Hampstead at Anna’s wake.

Audrey Burley memories in an October Mary Valley Voice brought back many for me.

Audrey and I were of similar age but because her family resided in the Kenilworth Lower school house (beside the school) she was able to begin her schooling at aged five. For me, having to ride a horse two and half miles each way – I was six before commencing my primary education.The greatest thrill, pleasure, excitement of my school life was in 1933 when Audrey and I were chosen to take part in a special district event. A “Queen” entrant was selected from three districts to compete in raising the most funds for the Mary Valley Anglican (then Church of England) Parish Churches.Pearl McGinn was chosen as our fundraiser. Dances were held in Kidaman, Kenilworth Upper and Lower (Gheerulla) Halls. Music at the Lower Hall was supplied by Mr. George Sutton (my dad) and Mr Eddie Loweke (married to Pearl’s cousin) on their button accordions with Elsie McGinn doing the extras on piano. A silver coin was entry with ladies providing supper.The big final was held in Imbil Hall to crown the Queen who had raised the highest amount by late November. Pearl chose her young sister Elva and a friend Daphne Evans as her Ladies-in-waiting, Audrey and I as train bearers, with Leon Adams and Jimmy Hassall as page boys.Pearl made the frocks for the adult females and Mrs Burley made for Audrey and myself. Pearl dressed in white, we four females in pale blue organdie over blue satin and the page boys in white satin jackets and caps with blue satin trim and blue satin pants.On that big night Imbil Hall was a packed house. The three contesting queens and their attendants were all arranged on stage. A big band played for much dancing before the announcement. The master of ceremonies announced that the entrants from Kandanga raised £74/2/8, Imbil £95/16/2 and Kenilworth £134/1/1.The crowd erupted in clapping and cheering. The two other contestants and attendants were moved off the stage and Mr. V. Tozer, MLA of Gympie crowned our Pearl, Queen and a huge maroon velvet train was attached from her shoulders.

We four children were, I guess, stage struck by it all. Audrey and I were ten and the boys six or seven years old. It was really a fantastic experience for us all.

Sadly I may be the only one left of this group.Historical Note: Mary Valley Parish was established in 1925; St Matthews Church constructed by the community in 1926 was the only Church of England in the Kenilworth district.

KARI sTARTs $MALL

The Kenilworth Artist Run Initiative, KARI, a group of Sunshine Coast hinterland artists who are now

running their own gallery in Kenilworth, got off to a great start in September with their exhibition “Hullo”. It was an opening not to be missed, introduced by the Mayor, Bob Abbott, and Sunshine Coast University’s Lisa Chandler. Even Charlie Chaplin dusted himself off to attend.

Perhaps the Little Tramp convinced KARI artists that “good things often come in small packages” because the theme of their next group exhibition timed for the festive season is “$mall Ones”. The artists have set themselves the challenge to limit the size and price of artworks to under $100. Works may also be taken away when purchased without the usual delays. Small works have a special intimacy, and make an ideal Christmas gift for an artlover at affordable prices.

“$mall Ones” opens on saturday 27 December at 2 pm in the gallery at 10A Elizabeth Street, Kenilworth and will remain open for most of the holiday season, and can be viewed during gallery opening hours from Thursday to Sunday, 11 am to 3 pm, or by appointment. Enquiries phone Anna 5488 6376.

KENILWORTH QUILT AND CRAfT LUNCHEON

On Wednesday 24 November members and friends of the Kenilworth Quilt and Craft Circle met for a

Christmas luncheon at McGinns of Kenilworth. Latest projects were admired at a show and tell, and the busy agenda for the coming year was discussed.

Members would like to thank all who have supported us through the year and we wish you a happy healthy Christmas and New Year.

The circle will meet again on Wednesday 26 January at the Kenilworth Historical Museum. Join us for a cuppa and a chat. The theme for 2011 Quilt and Craft show held on 11 and 12 June is “The Magic of Music”. Colours are black, white and red.

Christmas is just around the corner - two weeks to go. Kenilworth Post Office is gearing up to meet all your Christmas needs – postage of course, best way to

send presents, and a wide range of “value for money” gift ideas.

POsTAGE RATEs: Australia Post has again introduced a reduced postage rate for “Christmas Card only” letters. For a standard sized card, it is

55c (normally 60c) and for large cards $1.10 (normally $1.20). International “card only” letters are $1.30 to post. International stamps are GST free and therefore you should not

use domestic stamps (which include GST) on International letters or parcels. Special Christmas stamps are now on sale.

LETTERs TO sANTA CLAUs: The youngsters in the community should also think about

what presents they would like to ask Santa to bring them for Christmas. Santa has a special address again

this year – santa Claus, North Pole, Post Code 9999. Remember to put a full name (incl. surname) as a full return address on the

back of the envelope. It is also important to put a stamp on the front. Santa receives a lot of mail just before Christmas

and there is obviously more than one Michael or Robyn in the

world. If the full name and address of the sender is on the back, then it is highly likely that Santa might find time to send back a postcard.

CHRIsTMAs EVE PARTY AND sANTA DETAILs: Kenilworth welcomes Santa Claus. Once again, Kenilworth will be holding a town Christmas party at the showgrounds on friday 24 December. One of the highlights is Santa arriving to distribute gifts to all the children at 7pm.

By visiting any of the shops in Kenilworth (including the post office) that display the “Santa shops here” signs; all your details can then be provided to ensure that Santa does not miss your child at the Christmas party.

Finally I would like to remind our customers that the mail leaves Kenilworth each weekday at 5pm. Please be considerate by not parking in the mail truck’s spot after 4pm as he will have a huge amount of mail to load onto his truck by 5pm.

LAsT DANCE Of THE YEAR AT BELLI HALL

The last Olde-Time dance at the Belli Hall for 2010 will be held on New Year’s

HOW TO GIVE YOUR PETs A VERY MERRY CHRIsTMAs fROM KENILWORTH VET

Hi everyone! It’s that time of year again when the guy in

the red suit pays us a visit. Kenilworth Veterinary Surgery wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday for you and your animals. Here are a few tips to keep Christmas and the holidays good for your special friends.

If you are going away you should organise a boarding kennel or

someone responsible to look after your animals. Many places require vaccinations to be current and the need for the extra Kennel Cough vaccination is common in most boarding facilities. If your pet is going on holiday with you than the best way to permanently identify your pet is with a microchip. If they stray from you they can be quickly identified by a national microchip network and returned safely. Our nurses can organise and check all your details to ensure you have a stress free time away.

Puppies, kittens, birds and exotic pets are beautiful to own but we recommend not giving or receiving them on Christmas. All the excitement and rich food do not make a great first day in the new family. If the time is right for a new pet in your family consider giving collars, brushes and cat houses on the big day and than introduce the new family member on a later day. The team at KVS can advise you on an introductory plan for your new friend.

A note of caution about all the rich foods at Christmas. Too much rich fatty food can cause a condition called pancreatitis which results in a rushed trip to the vets and a stay in the clinic. Chocolate is another No No for our pets. And please remember your pets like a little something special too. There are loads of fun toys out there to keep your friend happy and provides family fun and exercise too. We have lots of ideas and toys at the clinic to help you find the right gift. In fact to help you we have organised a raffle with Christmas treats and useful items (food and shampoos) - one for your cat and one for the canine in your life. KENILWORTH EARLYBIRD PLAYGROUPs WIsH COME TRUE!

Over the past couple of months, parents and grandparents from Kenilworth Earlybird playgroup

have been very busy fundraising so we can purchase much needed equipment to make our playgroup room not only fun but safe for our little treasures. Our parents and grandparents cooked up a storm, raising enough money for us to buy most of the things on our wish list.

One of the most important things on our wish list was to buy new safety gates for our room. Our wish for new safety gates was answered when one of our local RSL members, Mr Jim Mckillop, came to us and said “the Kenilworth RSL sub branch would like to help us with the purchase of the gates”. To show our appreciation, all of the parents, grandparents and carers from Kenilworth Earlybird Playgroup would like to say a huge thankyou to the Kenilworth RsL sub branch for the contribution they made. The gates have been installed and are wonderful!

Another huge thank you goes to Irene from the newsagency, for selling our 100’s board. Irene sold the entire board within days. The winner of the 100’s board was Mr Peter Bright. Congratulations Peter, and thank you to everyone who supported us.

Playgroup is held from 9am to 10.45am every Thursday morning at the Kenilworth school in the old Prep room. Due to the increase in numbers to our Playgroup, we are looking at having two mornings a week next year. So if you’re around, come on down. fLAGGING THE TRAINsOMETHING fROM THE PAsT

The Village of Dagun, in the Mary Valley, turned out in style on Sunday 21 November to farewell a

tradition that has kept the rail crossing safe and entertained passengers on the Rattler for many years.

Volunteers manned the crossing for the last time, red flags in hand as the steam train made its way back from Imbil to Gympie with close to 400 passengers on board.

After receiving a “cease and desist” order from police who have earmarked the practice of using flags to halt traffic to allow a steam train over the crossing unsafe, Dagun Community group decided to pack the flags and fluoro vests away.

But far from taking a negative approach to the event, organisers wanted to celebrate the fact that Dagun has remained the only station in Queensland - and perhaps Australia - where the practice has continued long after electric rail became the norm.

With support from the Historical Re-enactment Group, the Imbil Bushrangers, the Gympie Vintage Car Club, the Gympie Vintage Motorcycle Club and a BBQ put on by the Mary Valley Lions Club, locals bopped along to the live music of the Black Hats who had penned a song specifically for the occasion.

The flags were held by two of the longest serving members of the Dagun Community Group, Geoff Harvey and Reg Lawler (see photo above). Smaller plastic flags were provided to everyone in attendance and the train was unofficially flagged into the station by 150 helpers. The small flags were then passed on to the younger folk on the train as mementos of the day.

The train stayed for over an hour and passengers feasted on burgers and mango crush, sampled the wide range of wine, liquors and cheeses that are a regular treat at Dagun and sung along with the band.

In order to ensure the continued safety of the crossing, Gympie Regional Council has adopted a 40 KPH speed zone for the crossing, while a 50 KPH speed zone will apply at the nearby Amamoor-Kandanga crossing.

The two red flags will be kept in the Dagun Station Museum as a reminder of days gone by.

THE COOROY PROBUs CLUB HAs DONE IT AGAIN!

The Sunshine Coast Probus Clubs came together in November for a combined outing at the Apollonian

Pub at Boreen Point.

After the success of last years trip to the Apollonian, it was decided to repeat the event and to again invite our other local Probus clubs. Organisers, Carol and Trevor Blake from the Cooroy Club, did a wonderful job in rallying the troops to assemble 110 Probarians from seven different clubs to this years gathering.

A delicious spit-roast luncheon, great entertainment and the opportunity to meet lots of new friends, combined to create a very successful day. A great setting with plenty of shelter so the shower or two did not dampen the spirits, nor dilute the wine, of those attending.

Well done Cooroy. A great idea for other regional groups to follow.

With the holidays fast approaching, it is an opportune time to consider

safety precautions to be taken while away on holidays. A house left empty for some time is a

prime target for intruders because the chances are they will not be disturbed and any offence will go undetected for days, or possibly weeks. When you go on holidays, it is important that you do not leave behind any clues that will tempt an intruder. These guidelines will help you reduce the chance of your house being broken into whilst away.

Give your house that ‘lived in’ look by taking the following steps:

• Check all doors and windows are securely locked • Ask you neighbours to watch out for visitors • Arrange for someone to mow the lawn and water plants • Secure your garbage bin • Use electric timers to tune your radio to talk back radio during the day • Turn down the volume on your telephone and don’t leave a message on your answering machine telling callers that you are away • Advise local Police of your absence, providing address and contact phone number • Check the yard to ensure no ladders or tools are accessible • Do not leave keys concealed outside your house • Ask neighbours to contact the Police if they see anything suspicious • Secure your vehicle if you are leaving it at home • Mark all easily removable articles using the Police Service property marking system • Inform your NHW Block Co-ordinator that you will be away.

Remember, if you come home and find someone has been in your home, do not enter, do not touch anything, go next door and call the Police.

We encourage everyone to enjoy the festive season but please remain within the law and don’t drink and drive. The Christmas holiday period is the worst time of the year for crashes, most caused by alcohol or speed. Police will do everything possible to ensure that the roads in the Imbil Police Division are safe over the period and will show no leniency to offenders.

Graduation and Christmas wishesI have visited many local schools in

recent weeks to witness academic and sporting awards nights - it is always a great pleasure to applaud the success

Woolooga-Cooroy Powerline update I have asked the Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke if he will receive a submission from me on behalf of the community action committee PAGE outlining the alternative proposed powerline corridor. This follows the State Government Minister’s advice to me that the Federal department has offered no objection to the Powerlink-proposed corridor.

I believe it is important that the Federal Minister be made aware of the local community’s opposition to the Powerlink proposal, and I believe he is duty-bound to receive our submission in light of him making a comment after receiving a submission from Powerlink. It is important the State Government Minister postpone making a decision until the Federal Minister responds to my request.

The works are on a stretch of the road near the bank of the Mary River and the road has been restricted to one lane under a “give way” system, and traffic controllers will be present for truck movements. Council is working with the Mary River Catchment Care Group to ensure the best environmental outcome with the work. The works have been estimated to be completed by Christmas, weather permitting.

We have now launched the 44 Locality snapshots paper which has been created to understand and celebrate the vibrant and diverse communities that make up the region. The Locality Snapshots combine local knowledge with population statistics, maps, photos, and key community spaces and places, telling a story about the character and identity of each of the 44 local areas across the Sunshine Coast. The snapshots are now available on council’s website and in hard copy format from council’s libraries and customer service centres.

Council libraries are looking for community feedback on what people want from their library. More than 37,000 people have joined Sunshine Coast Libraries in the last two years, bringing total membership to 120,000. Now you have the chance to tell us what other services you would like to see, or how we can improve the ones we already offer. And you could win a new i-Pad in the process, just by being involved and joining one of our focus groups! Your nearest focus group will take place on Wednesday 15 December, at 1:30pm in Cooroy Library, lasting for one hour. Well it’s just a few short weeks until Christmas and yet another year has flown by. My family and I would like

to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.

Gympie Regional Council is in the process of formulating a new “Community Plan” and Imbil’s locality meeting will be held at the RSL hall at 6pm on Wednesday 1 December.

On Thursday 25 November I attended the Qld Tropical Cyclone consultation committee ‘Cyclone, storm and flood season seminar’ to help prepare all emergency services for possible events. Flood warnings can be found on the BOM site http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/flood Remember to keep your radio handy in times of storms and floods with a supply of fresh batteries. Tune into ABC radio coast FM as council keeps in touch with the radio for updates and current flood heights.

‘The Noise’ publication is now available from your local school or GRC library. This magazine is put together by youth for youth and is a great read, so grab your copy.

For new businesses in our area, GRC have an ‘Economic Development Officer’, Lynne Wilbraham who can help you with many and varied topics with starting a new business.

For those who live in the federal and skyring Creek areas, ‘Club Fed’ is a great chance to meet other residents in your area, and join in with a delightful meal (for a small fee), fun and friendship. Next night will be held on Friday 17 December. Why not make the effort.

October 2010 was unusually wet. In fact there were floods again. We tossed up whether to cancel the

festival or whether to keep going, right up until the last minute. At 6am we decided that if the bridge opened we would go ahead. At 6.30 the bridge opened and we forged ahead. The street closure had to be cancelled as it was deemed a risk; skating was impossible in the rain and had to be cancelled; the ride on mowers would have ruined the football oval, so the convoy was moved to Pioneer Park.

With fewer market stalls and fewer musicians to keep the music rolling we opened the day to the wonderful sounds of the Noosa Pipe Band. We had over 100 children come and join in the fun with Clown Man and Fairy Princess Kate and their new friend Rohan the Clown. They kept the children laughing with fun and games: face painting, balloon making and much more. We had about thirty children come with their decorated bikes to be in the parade and competition. The children were undeterred by the rain.

It seems Cooran had the best weather on the coast that day. There was rain, but only light and inconsistent. So while the rest of the Sunshine Coast was suffering raging windsand torrential rains, Cooran enjoyed a peaceful but damp day and so much fun - dancing, singing and partying till early evening.

To make up for some of what had to be cancelled on the 10th we held the Pioneer Park Workshop and Unveiling of stage 2 of the Playground Mural at the bi-monthly Cooran Eco Market, on the 20th November, when once again it rained. We have decided that if the Sunshine Coast is in need of water again and facing drought we should

just organise another Tall Trees festival. The Chardonnay Sippers kept us entertained and the Phil Butterworth band had everyone dancing and singing along.

To all of you who stayed inside out of the rain – you missed out on a great day. Make sure you don’t miss the next Tall Trees, when rain hail or shine Cooran will party once again. Look out for the Tall Trees Art exhibition on 15 and 16 October 2011 and Tall Trees street festival number three on 19 May 2012. CHRIsTMAs COOKIEs1 ½ cups sugar • 2 eggs • ½ t/s salt • 1 t/s baking powder • 2 cups natural peanut butter (healthfood shop) Peanut butter should be 100% peanuts, no sugar, salt or additives • 1 cup of unsalted organic peanuts • 30 Bittersweet Lindt Chocolate Drops =;-)

1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and line two baking trays with paper. On one baking tray place the peanuts and allow them to roast until fragrant.2. In a bowl add all the other ingredients. Remove the peanuts from the oven and add to the bowl. Mix all the ingredients together by hand.3. Make 30 walnut sized balls and place them on the baking tray. Flatten them slightly and place the trays into the oven.Cook for 13 mins turning once if necessary.4. Remove one tray of biscuits from the oven and turn the oven off. Place one chocolate drop in the centre of each biscuit. Press the chocolate firmly into cookies and place the tray back into the oven.5. Remove the second tray and repeat the chocolate drop process. Remove the first tray as soon as the chocolate drop becomes shiny, and before it has a chance to melt. Approximately 1-2 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool fully before removing them from the baking tray. ENJOY!
