the fortnight that was

Generosity over Christmas. A 15 year old English schoolboy entrepreneur who

shot to fame after making £14,000 (about A$28,000) selling sweets at his school found himself in trouble with his headteacher

after it was revealed his ‘black market’ school tuckshop had raked in thousands of

pounds to pay his University fees. With the looming threat of suspension from his school, he decided to close the business and give away the rest of his sweet-toothed goods as an ‘early Christmas present’ to the homeless.

Be careful hanging out the washing. A woman in Melbourne was swallowed by a sinkhole while hanging out her washing and had to be rescued by firefighters. She was in her back garden when the three-metre deep sinkhole opened up beneath her and submerged her in water. She was forced to tread water for 20 minutes until a neighbour heard her cries for help and called the fire brigade.

Summer is here “whoopee”! and everyone is going to the Kenilworth swimming Pool to keep cool.

The water slide is definitely a feature with folks coming from all over to use and enjoy. The Kenilworth Pool is a community run pool, not run by the Sunshine Coast Council. We have a very dedicated small committee and volunteer group that manage the day to day operations. We are always looking for more volunteers to help. Even a few hours a week would be great. If you have the time please come down and chat with either Jenny or Carly, or who ever is at the kiosk.

We thank the Sunshine Coast Council for their generous support over the years, we could not manage without them. The opening hours for the pool during the school holidays are 10am to 4.30pm.

KPC news

On saturday 15 november, KPC members gathered for the President’s Cup, which turned out to be an

extremely hot day – for riders and their horses. Rob Egel organised some games and activities for us to enjoy. It was full of chaotic fun and challenges – popping balloons, sacks, flags, buckets of water, getting on and off horses and running across wooden steps. We are very grateful to Rob for organising such fun activities.

The day finished much earlier than anticipated, due to the hot weather. The horses, I am sure, enjoyed having the afternoon off!

We wish everyone a great Christmas and look forward to sharing with you our activities in the new year.

The annual social and concert in aid of the school prize fund was held on Friday evening last and was a great success. The children went through the various items without a hitch, reflecting great credit on their teachers Mr and Mrs Price. One or two items by grown-ups helped to fill in the programme and were well received by an enthusiastic audience. Following is a list of the various items: song – “Our Polly is a dairy maid” by the junior girls; song “Meddlesome Matty” by Miss Eva Pickering; song “I’m a little sailor boy” by the junior boys; “We are weary” by the whole school; song “The singer was Irish” by Miss Ruth Beattie; duet ”Starboard Watch” by Mrs Price and Mr. H. Pickering; charade by the senior boys; song “Won’t you come to my tea party” by Miss Lily Sims and Elsie McGinn; song “The Swallows” by Mrs Price; song “The Flower Bells” by the senior girls; song “Poor Old Joe” by the senior boys dressed as Niggers assisted in the chorus by the senior girls who sang in parts as an encore, they sang “Down in de corn fields”. The last item was a stump speech by Master George Pickering assisted by Master Roy Beattie both in character and was really very mirth provoking. After the concert the hall was cleared for dancing which for the rest of evening was carried on with great vigour, music being supplied by various performers, with the violins and an accordeon. Supper was served at midnight and after a short adjournment to the danceroom function returned. The proceeds it realised will greatly assist the school committee in purchasing prizes for the annual break-up.Historic note: The school referred to is the first Kenilworth School built in 1899 on the site that is now Woods Sand and Gravel – The Provisional School Kenilworth Township was opened in the Kenilworth Hall on October 21, 1924 (making it 90 years old this year).

The Kenilworth Museum is now closed for the summer months. At a public meeting in september to discuss public art in isaac moore Park, those present

stressed that installing a toilet was a more pressing need. An imaginative proposal was put forward -

make the toilet the artwork! Thus the “Design-a-Dunny” working group was formed.

At a further public meeting on 26 November, attended by Cr Greg Rogerson, these main points were made:

• The working group is open to any community member.• Making a toilet an art feature is used in many countries - just Google it to

see! Kenilworth’s “arty” toilet could become an iconic tourist feature.

• The construction must adhere to all necessary specifications/regulations, especially regarding

public health and flood levels.• The local community is to

have strong input into the design concept and be kept informed of each stage

of the process.• A comprehensive design

concept (the overall plan) is to be

drawn up with advice from relevant professionals. The plan will form the basis of the design brief (the specifics) for submissions.• Submissions for the toilet design are open to all artists and architects including art and architecture students and interested persons Australia wide.• Financial support is to come from Sunshine Coast Council, sponsorships, donations, patronage and grants.

The mary Valley stages 2014 season was very busy and successful with the Stags making it to the Preliminary

Grand Final in a play-off against Coolum for a berth in the Grand Final. However Coolum played the better game on the day and came out winners 21-14. The end of year Presentation Night was held at the Imbil Bowls Club with the following awards being presented: Best and fairest - Chad Parker; Best Back - Ryan Osborn; Best forward - Mathew Zillman; most improved - Kurtis Brennan; Coaches Choice - Ryan Osborn; Players Player - James Hogan. Congratulations to all players.We have held our AGM and the following executive have been elected: President - Glenn Carlson; V/President - Jo Abbott; secretary - Miriam Skyring; treasurer - Nardia Parker.The retiring executives were thanked for all their hard work and the new were welcomed on board.Next season Sunshine Coast/Gympie Rugby League will be introducing a new two tiered playing model. A Grade will remain as such and reserve and C Grade will be combined into Second Division and it is expected there be 16 teams competiting in this division. It will be a new experience but a very exciting year ahead of us. Mary Valley Country harvest Co-operative will run its highly successful summer school on tuesday 17 and

wednesday 18 of february 2015.

The Business of Small Area Farming will include four subject streams: • Financial and Property Management • Animal Enterprises • General Horticultural Enterprises • Market Gardening.

More technical support has been requested with detailed information on soils, such as how to interpret soil tests and methods of improving soil structure. Also a holistic approach to Integrated Pest Management.

Irrigation was very successful last year and will feature again with more practical advice on water management.

Special care will be taken to inform producers of the certified CareFarmed trademark utilised at Dagun Growers Market, and how to attain this certification. Also to be addressed is the importance of care taken when picking and grading produce to maintain quality assurance in the market place.

Of interest to new landholders is the opportunity of new enterprise crops which could thrive in our region. The school is run for a minimal fee at Kandanga Hall. More information and registration will be available in January.

Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce, its members and volunteers

of the Kenilworth information Centre would like to publicly thank sunshine Coast Council (sCC) for supporting and assisting the Chamber with the Centre’s operational costs. The recognition from

SCC and Cr. Greg Rogerson clearly shows that Kenilworth has not been forgotten. Thank-you once again.our other sources of income are: Commission from the Craft Centre sales, retail sales of topographic maps for the Conondale Great Walk and the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk, small amounts of printed material and fund raising. We also have been very successful with grants from Regional, State and Federal Governments. We do our very best to advertise the District unfortunately we do not have enough spare cash for some serious advertising. We have a mailout system were the brochure ‘Discover Kenilworth’ is sent to all businesses and organisations that have written material on display and telephone enquiries. The Centre’s first and foremost priority is to promote Kenilworth and District, the community, organisations and businesses. We also have a permanent $2 square money board on the go, so come on in and purchase a square, the winner takes home $100. Donations are also very welcome.A big thanks also must go the volunteers who keep the Centre open seven days. Without their dedication there would be no Information Centre, incidentally, the nearest information centre is approximately 40kms away. The Centre has an excellent written material display and have contra deals in place with some regional information centres within a 400kms radius, Bundaberg/Hervey Bay for example. Our partnerships extends to Sunshine Coast Council, Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd., Mary Valley Country and Mary Valley Inc.

On 28 september 2014, mary Valley rsL sub-Branch hosted in conjunction with imbil masonic Lodge a “manup for

Prostate Cancer” workshop at imbil memorial hall which was well attended.

Guest speakers from Brisbane and locally, spoke on prostate cancer experiences, awareness and support.

Approximately $1600 was raised for prostate cancer research and patient support.

on 11 november a Community remembrance Day Ceremony was held at the recently reconstructed Kandanga Memorial Park which was well attended despite the very hot day.

Our thanks to the Gympie Regional Council and Queensland State Government who funded and completed the reconstruction.

This was the first time this ceremony has been held at Kandanga for many years. And the first Rededication of the Memorial to those Servicemen and Servicewomen who gave their lives on all battlefields and also those that were lucky enough to return home but suffered since from their experience of the horrors of war.

The new Memorial is beautiful and a fitting tribute to them.

Our thanks also to Kandanga Hotel who set up shade shelters and seating on the day and also provided light refreshments to the gathering.

on 17 november we hosted a suicide Prevention Course in conjunction with the National Centre for Suicide Prevention Training Inc. of Sydney. Nineteen people attended the course, the largest group they have ever trained.

The course leader travelled from Sydney for the day and by all reports the course was a great success with a follow-up course being considered. The course was organised by our Pension Advocate Welfare Officer Rex Brenneke.

on 25 november our President Phil Jensen presented the mary Valley rsL sub-Branch and Citizens auxiliary secondary effort award to Latisha Stewart of Mary Valley State College. Congratulations Latisha.

on 30 november we had our Christmas luncheon which was well attended by members, partners, Legacy widows and invited guests.

Planning is now in progress for the 2015 Centenary of Anzac community Commemoration which will be held at Imbil Memorial Park. Kim Bowditch is our new events co-ordinator and will welcome community support.

Also now is a good time for ex-Service people and citizens to join our sub-branch as we would welcome new members in the Anzac Centenary year.

Life Chats …

Right here, right now, I know most of you would willingly acknowledge that we live in one of the most beautiful

places on earth.

This Sunshine Coast backyard offers an amazing and diverse showcase of destinations to explore: beaches, lakes, rivers, creeks, mountains, and farming communities. Our family, this year, has had a personal crusade to venture and visit this surrounding Coastal and Hinterland backyard. Trips to Montville and Yandina Markets, Sunshine Beach Headland walk, Noosa National Park, Kondalilla Falls, Crystal Waters in Conondale, Mooloolaba Beach walks, Koala Park walk in Nambour, climbing Mt Coolum, Little Yabba Creek near Kenilworth and paddling down the Obi Creek waterways.

Often, we don’t even leave our hill in Obi. We are extremely fortunate to have our very own creek frontage backyard which offers endless opportunities to enjoy with friends and family.

One event which the kids regularly request, an evening loved by all, is a “Driveway Dinner”. This transpires in our “front yard”. It is enjoyed somewhere around the 6pm mark. Stifling heat of the day has retired, flies buzzed off for night slumber, stars just emerging for their night time shift and a slight, cool breeze wafting up the eastern hillside. Plates piled high, cutlery, glasses for a beverage and an option of chair use or buns on concrete. We all head out and quite selfishly lap up the most stunning 360 degree view that some people would pay a lot of bucks to experience.

For me personally, my backyard in Obi offers a reprieve. Our dog, “Tumbles” and I regularly sneak away from the house. It immediately transports us to a place of tranquility and peace.

So to all on the Sunshine Coast, don’t discount what lies in your backyard. There may be more to it, than you possibly realise.

holidays. A house left empty for some time is a prime target for intruders because the chances are they will not be disturbed and

any offence will go undetected for days, or possibly weeks. When you go on holidays, it is important that you do not leave behind any clues that will tempt an intruder. These guidelines will help you reduce the chance of your house being broken into whilst away.give your house that ‘lived in’ look by taking the following steps:• Check all doors and windows are securely locked.• Ask you neighbours to watch out for visitors.• Arrange for someone to mow the lawn and water plants.• Secure your garbage bin.• Use electric timers to tune your radio to talk back radio during the day.• Turn down the volume on your telephone and don’t leave a message on your answering machine telling callers that you are away.• Advise local Police of your absence, providing address and contact phone number.• Check the yard to ensure no ladders or tools are accessible.• Do not leave keys concealed outside your house.• Ask neighbours to contact the Police if they see anything suspicious.• Secure your vehicle if you are leaving it at home.• Mark all easily removable articles using the Police Service property marking system.• Inform your NHW Block Co-ordinator that you will be away.Remember, if you come home and find someone has been in your home, do not enter, do not touch anything, go next door and call the Police.

ALL Police will be conducting traffic enforcement leading up to, during and after the Christmas period, concentrating on the FATAL FIVE - speeding, fatigue, drink/drug driving, seat belts and driver distraction. Very early on sunday 2 november, Year 6 students and staff were packed and ready for their inaugural

adventure to sydney/Canberra. They spent the day in Sydney enjoying a leisurely walk around the Rocks, followed by a beautiful cruise on Sydney Harbour. From the boat, students could see close up a number of landmark attractions, including the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Kirribilli House (with the flag flying), just to name a few. While in Canberra, students participated in a variety of educational programmes and included visits to Old Parliament House, National Film and Sound Archives, Questacon, Australian Institute of Sport, ANZAC Parade and were ‘blown away’ with CSIRO activities.On Wednesday the students took a walk down ANZAC Parade, explored the Australian War Memorial and GeoScience Centre, reinforcing the Science Rock Unit covered in Term 3.The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education and contributes funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support. “A huge THANK YOU to all Good Shepherd staff for allowing our children such an amazing experience.
