Rector’s MessageRev. Nicholas Tacito, O.PraemDear Parents, Students and Friends,

She is the greatest saint in heaven, being full of grace and holiness from the first moment of her existence, since she was destined to be the Mother of God. It’s Grad Bash 2019 at Universal Studios HollywoodThis year our Senior Class will be experiencing an end of the year adventure at Universal Studios Hollywood for Grad Bash 2019. On, May 17th, they will have the opportunity to enjoy the rides, dance venues and good wholesome fun before they graduate at the end of the month. For some students, this will be their first time experiencing the thrill of the park and they look forward to Harry Potter land. Students will be receiving their Grad Bash instructions the week of the event. Any further questions, please email Mrs. Andrie.

On May 2nd, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will be hosting a Youth Summit focusing on the nation’s growing opioid epidemic at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Ten student officers along with 2 teachers will attend this event and listen to presentations that will bring awareness revolving around the concepts of self-empowerment and making healthy choices when facing substance use and abuse as it relates to the ongoing opioid epidemic. Mary Star of the Sea will also be highlighted as one of our Freshman students, Therese Duenas

was chosen to sing the National Anthem to open this event. She will sing in front of 2500 high school students, 240 academic staff and 600 various dignitaries. The students hope to bring back information on how to tackle the cycle of violence and addiction and share it with their greater community.

«Prom Attire: Prom takes places this month, and the attire is formal. Ladies must be careful to select appropriate long dresses when shopping for prom dresses; this includes no revealing slits or décolleté. T-shirts will be provided to girls whose dresses are deemed too low cut and revealing. Additionally, students will be sent home if they are dressed inappropriately. Please review the “Guideline for Homecoming Dance and Prom” on page 70 of the Parent-Student Handbook. If you have questions or would like to have the dress approved, please see Ms. Sabra.

«Valuables: Please keep all valuables including cell phones, iPods and laptops, locked in your locker at all times with a secure lock. Preferably - do not bring them to school! Please also keep your backpacks and belongings with you. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

«Cell Phones: The school prohibits the use of cell phones during school hours for obvious reasons. Please review the Cell Phone Policy on page 49 of the Parent-Student Handbook which clearly indicates the issuance of a Dean’s Detention and a $5 fine for confiscated cell phones. The fine increases to $20 for repeat offenders.

«Grad Nite: The school has distributed Grad Nite packets to all seniors; please review the guidelines for this special night. We expect everyone to act responsibly and to dress appropriately according to the school’s dress code. Note: Seniors MAY NOT drive and a PARENT must pick them up at school.

«Driving Policy: Parents and students are driving TOO FAST on Taper Avenue and through the neighborhood. Please follow all traffic laws and use good judgement in driving safely.

Pro-Life Club Margaret Mary Herbst - President of Pro-Life Club

April was a very blessed month for the pro-life movement! The highly anticipated pro-life film, Unplanned, blew away the box office reeling in roughly a total gross over $17,500,000 since its start and finishing in the top 10 the first two weeks. The film has produced much online chatter: converting pro-choicers, helping post-abortive women seek healing, and assisting abortion workers in leaving the industry. The movie has saved an unknown number of babies as 40 Days for Life reported an increase in volunteers after the film’s release. This past month, the pro-abortion lawmakers in California are pushing their radical abortion agenda on college campuses in an alarming manner. California Senate Bill 24 would mandate all state universities

to distribute the lethal abortion pill on campus. Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life America, testified how the “abortion pill has been implicated in at least 24 deaths and thousands of hospitalizations and the total lack of pro-life conscience protections for students and health care providers on campus under the extreme abortion proposal.” However, our current administration is fighting hard to truly defund Planned Parenthood! The Department of Health and Human Services will provide appx $5.1 million in family planning funds to the Obria Group. Also, under the new Title X directive, organizations “receiving Title X funding have 120 days to financially separate their family planning and abortion operations and one year to physically separate their family planning and abortion operations.” Regretfully, US District Judge Michael J. McShane issued a preliminary injunction against these changes so it will temporarily prevent the rule from going into effect while it’s challenged in court. However, the President and his administration are such pro life warriors and plenty of states have followed their lead - Ohio officially defunded Planned Parenthood and redirected those funds to Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a bill that will save babies from abortion by “requiring abortion centers selling the dangerous abortion pill to inform women that there is a process to reverse the pill and save their baby should they change their mind during the abortion process,” and South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has promised to sign a bill banning abortions when a baby’s heartbeat begins. As we begin this month of May dedicated to Mother Mary, we pray for her powerful intercession in an end to the greatest destroyer of love and peace - abortion.

Campus Ministry Commissioner of Liturgy - Kelsey Kavanaugh

This month of April has offered many opportunities for us to grow in our Catholic faith. We started the month by celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Trudeau led our liturgy, and along with 40 adults, Confirmed 85 students from MSHS and teens from Mary Star parish. The sophomores, juniors, and seniors receiving the sacrament had been preparing themselves to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit all year long in their religion classes. All of their hard work came to fruition in the beautiful mass led by Bishop Trudeau. These students have now been fully initiated into the Church and are prepared to do God’s Will. At our Christian Service assembly we recognized the students among us who did an exceptional amount of service hours. By helping out at food drives, planting trees, and doing many other types of service, students truly worked to make our community a better place. In preparation for Holy Week, a reconciliation service was held along with a school-wide Stations of the Cross. Finally, 50 Juniors and Seniors attended a three day retreat at Camp Emerald Bay in Catalina. The theme of the retreat was “Redeemed,” and gave the students the opportunity to strengthen their relationship with God and enjoy fun, faith, and fellowship. We are confident that God will continue to work through our lives to create a more perfect world. This Easter season, we thank God for his many blessings and pray for a better relationship with Him and with each other.

On April 4, 2019 District Deputy Ken Hall presented district championship medals to freshmen Marlena Rivera and Ryan Bobich. Marlena and Ryan competed in the 2018-19 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Challenge at Mary Star High School. They first achieved council champion for Angels Gate Council 1740 for which they
