Your Generosity Inspires MeOn the Saturday before Christmas, someone gave me a personal gift of $1000. I was stunned.
Two days later, I answered a phone call from a parishioner who asked if I was finally out of my long meeting, and if“things” went all right. I had no idea what he was talking about --- I had not been in a meeting, and I told him so. Heimmediately let out an agonizing groan.
He told me that he had received a text message from someone claiming to be me that said that “I” needed for him to contactme urgently, but was in an important meeting and could only be contacted by text. He texted back to the number that hethought was mine (but really wasn’t). The person responded that there was a family in pressing need. Because of my“meeting” “I” could only help them if he would go to the store and buy $500 worth of gift cards, and then take a pictureof the gift card authentication numbers and send the picture to “me” by text. “I” would then forward them to the familywho would receive the urgent help they needed, even though “I” couldn’t leave my “meeting” to deliver the cards in person.“I” told him “I” would pay him back the next day.
He did what “I” asked without hesitation. “I” responded back with great thanks, and told him that I had become aware thatthe family desperately needed $800 more. It was then that he became suspicious and called my real phone number, talkedto the real me, and discovered that he had been the victim of a scam.
I asked him if he had used a credit card to buy the gift cards. He responded that he had paid cash. He was in a pre-Christmasrush, and responded to the text spontaneously. The cash that he used was the only cash he had to buy Christmas presentswith for his big family. I asked him to check with the store, gift card company and police to see if there was anything to bedone so that he could recover his money. He reported back that he did file a police report, but there was no way to recoverhis cash.
I drove right over to his house and gave him half of the $1000 I had received as a gift a few days earlier. His unhesitating(and unwise) decision to help folks in need inspired me to be unhesitating and wise in giving him the amount of money thathe lost.
I am a much more generous person than I ever have been, largely because I am in a parish community that has so manygenerous people in it. Anybody need $500?
P.S. Please spread the word for people not to fall prey to such scams. I will never call or email you personally and ask foryou to send me money or gift cards!

Social ConcernsBUILD - On Monday, Dec 9, Justice MinistryNetwork Members came together at 2nd Presbyterianto shift from the Listening Process to the Research toAction phase of our yearly process. After focusing onthe vision, learned about research criteria and processand then we got updates on the current campaigns.
Cheryl Birch gave the crime and violence update.Since BUILD started this campaign in 2015, therehave been over 117 homicides and hundreds ofshootings. In 2018 BUILD got a commitment fromMayor Gray and the support from the Urban CountyCouncil to contract with NNSC to do a detailedproblem analysis, and that was done in January of thisyear. It showed that 1/3 of the crime in Lexington isgroup involved. Since then, Mayor Gorton hasannounced a new Safety Net: initiative to reduceviolence that is to be released at the end of 2019.There was a record number of 29 homicides inLexington for 2019. The violence must stop!
Yoshia Togami gave an update on the drugcampaign. When we started in 2017 the LexingtonHealth Dept. Needle Exchange was open 1 day/weekfor 5 hours, with staff pulled from other departments.BUILD has asked for more hours (including eveningsand weekends), multiple locations, and traineddedicated staff to provide the best care. The NeedleExchange is now open Monday 1-4 PM, Wednesday3-6:30, and Friday 11 AM - 4 PM. There is adedicated coordinator and the Health Commissionerhas agreed to apply for additional grant funding tofurther expand the service. There are over 1000visits/month to the Needle Exchange.
The education campaign was updated by PastorAdam Jones. We have been trying to communicatewith the Superintendent and Board of Education. Wedecided to attend the Board of Education Meetingsand on Nov. 25th we had 100 BUILD leaders at thatmeeting. Pastor Owens and Fr. Noll each spoke andreiterated our concern for the high suspension ratesand the request to meet with the Superintendent. Atthe end of the meeting our concerns were addressedby FCPS staff, Dr. Caulk and Ms Spires. There wasdata and information presented that has not beenavailable to us, such as the current data showing
reduced suspension rates, and that several staff hasattended training at IIRP in the Safer Saner Schools.There was also several incorrect statements made,further showing the need for us to have a face to facemeeting with him. We need to communicate!
Good news, a meeting has been set up with Dr. Caulkfor Jan. 15 at Shiloh Baptist! We will keep pressing tocommunicate and work to reduce suspensions for ourkids. They deserve and need to be in school!
The mental health research started off that eveningcollecting more stories of people struggling withmental health to further inform the direction we wantto go this year. We also made lists of the questions wewant answers to and the professionals working inmental health who could answer those questions.

Next meetings coming up are:Justice Ministry Network meeting, TH, Feb. 20, 7PM in the school/ELC library. Here we will getupdates on the research and select the names to inviteto the Nehemiah Action. This is for all MQ justiceministry network members or those interested inlearning more about BUILD.
Rally is Monday, March 23, 7 PM at MQHR. This isfor all justice ministry network members. We willhear how the research is going, who is committed toattend the Nehemiah Action, and see how manypeople we have committed to attend towards MQ’sgoal of 425 at the Nehemiah Action goal of 2250.Nehemiah Action is Monday, April 27, 7 PM atHeritage Hall. This meeting is for everybody! Willask officials to address the serious communityproblems we have been working on solutions for. Celebration is for all justice ministry networkmembers on Monday, June 15, 7 PM at MQHR. Wewill celebrate our successes and kick off theinvestment drive.
Congolese
The Catholic Congolese community has beengrowing over the 4 years since they started attendingMass at MQ, as well as the Newman Center andChrist the King. (See the article in the Jan/FebCrossroads for the story of Alain and Rachel Amurifamily’s journey.) Twice a month the CatholicCongolese attend Mass in their own parishes and theother 2 weeks there is a Mass in Swahili at St. PeterClaver for the whole community. They have anexcellent choir! Fr. Anthony Mutha, an Indian priestthat speaks Swahili, now lives in Lexington and canclosely minister to the community.
They have formed the Kentucky CatholicCongolese Association with the goal to supportwidows and orphans both in KY and back in theCongo. They invite all interested in learning moreabout their community and their work to supportCatholic Congolese widows and orphans to attend ameeting on Sat., Jan. 25, 5:33 - 6:30 in meeting roomAB.
Catholic Action Center
MQ had a wonderful Christmas working with theCatholic Action Center! We served a delicious hamdinner on Sunday, the 22nd and then our Young Adultmusicians had a benefit concert for CAC following at7 at MQ. The music selections were based on the 4weeks of Advent and were beautiful and reflective onthe themes of Faith, Hope, Joy and Love. Perfectpreparation for the birth of Jesus on Christmasmorning! The CAC choir also sang Christmas Carols.The event concluded with hospitality of hot drinksand sweets.
On Christmas morning a wonderful team ofvolunteers showed up at CAC with food prepared toserve a lovely breakfast and a team ready to set up aChristmas store, transforming a sleeping area into anarea where the residents could choose several gifts.What a beautiful way to celebrate Christmasmorning!

from Scottye Terhune1 lb. ground chuck 1 (15 oz.) tomato sauce1 onion, chopped 1 (14 oz.) diced tomatoes1 pkg. taco seasoning 1 (4-1/2 oz.) green chilies1 can corn (undrained) 1 envelope ranch style dressing3 (15 oz. Mexican style beans 1-1/2 cups of water
(undrained) or red beansBrown ground chuck and onion. Add taco seasoning. Drain and put in Crock Pot. Add remaining ingredients. Mixall together and cook 8 hours on high.
LOADED POTATO SOUPfrom Diane Monahan
7 to 8 med. size baking potatoes, 1 small container (8 oz.) sour creamdiced 2 C. cheddar cheese, grated
12 slices cooked bacon, crumbled 1/2 C. flour1 bunch green onions, chopped 7 C. milk
finely (use only white and 3/4 stick butterlight green part)
Cook bacon and crumble. Bake potatoes and cool, then remove skin and dice. In large saucepan, melt butter, addflour gradually and mix w/wire whisk to make a thick paste. Slowly add milk. Stir constantly until slightly thick.Add remainder of ingredients Stir until cheese and sour cream are melted.
TOM’S WHITE CHICKEN CHILIThe Menke Family
4 cups water 1 - 12 oz. beer3 chicken breasts 2 Cups milk4 chicken bouillon cubes flour (optional - use as a thickener)2 T. olive oil Jalapeno sauce or 1 tsp. chili powder1 small can green chilies (diced) onions1 can garbanzo beans (chick peas) garlic salt1 can white northern beans pepper2 cans white corn1 cup barley
All measurements are approximate, implied or simply not known. Combine all of the above ingredients in largepot. (Chicken can be frozen or thawed. I recommend skinless and boneless chicken. My wife recommends Sam’sClub Tyson’s in the light blue bag.) Cook until half time. Then take chicken out and cut it up. Return chicken topot and simmer until the game is over. (Best if simmer for 1-2 hours.) Top with Sour Cream (stronglyrecommended). Cheese (optional) Fresh Chopped Onions (optional) NOTE: Even better the second time around.
