Introduction: Martini QuickShot Creator Plug-In

The Martini Shot is a legendary Hollywood term for the final shot of the day. Its origins stem from the post-wrap celebration drink, the Martini. Today, it alerts the crew of the last shot of the day, so that they know the next shot they take will be from a glass. The makers of StoryBoard Quick and StoryBoard Artist have developed this new application for use in your editing software. Martini QuickShot Creator Plug-In brings the power and ease of our pre-production visualization products directly to post-production. Martini has been developed for creating slugs (temporary placeholders for planned shots) integrated within your editing program, so you can quickly direct scenes into your timeline. Now with Martini, you can design your missing shots without breaking stride in editing and post-production. This plug-in is perfect for designing pickup shots and trying new ideas. Martini will allow you direct more informative slugs while you can continue to edit the rest of your project.

Installing Martini Download the installation file from the link or open the CD and double-click to run the installers (executable file [.exe] or package file [.pkg]). This should start the installer. Follow the directions on-screen and give administrator permission when prompted.

Tutorials: How to Use Martini QuickShot Creator Martini QuickShot allows you to create shots in its user interface which it will then generate and add to your timeline within your editing software. With this new capability, you can plan future shots and set their position in your project. When Martini is launched, the Shots and Backgrounds must load. While they automatically load, you will see a spinning icon in the lower right corner of the thumbnail. When it has finished spinning and disappears, Martini’s libraries are ready to be used to compose your shots. Online video tutorials are available at http://www.martiniquickshot.com/tutorials.php.

Overview: Create Your First Shot First, select your desired Shot Type or Sequence from the Shot Area. The shot will appear in the Composite Frame with characters and a location selected. In the Elements Area, change the location under Background and the characters under Characters.

You can add or remove Characters using the and icons in the Characters subsection of the Elements Area. To change the Characters, use the dropdown menu underneath one of the character icons. Once the desired graphics are in the Frame, they can be moved and manipulated by selecting and dragging them in the Frame or using the Composite Toolbar.

Add to Sequence

When you are finished, render the composite frame to your Sequence by clicking the icon or Spacebar to the right of the Composite Area. The shot or multiple-shot sequence will be added to your Sequence.

Create Another Shot Now that the shot has been saved to the Sequence, the Composite Area Frame is ready to be changed for the next shot. Change the location, characters, and their positions as before and

then add the new shot to your Sequence Window by clicking again (or pressing the Spacebar.) The new shot will be added to the bottom of your Sequence and you can continue to create and add subsequent shots the same way.

Changing a Shot Double-click a rendered shot in the Sequence Window to bring it back into the Composite Area. When it has been loaded into the Composite Area Frame window, you can make any edits you

want and then click the icon to the right of the Frame to update it in the Sequence. The

current shot loaded in the Composite area is also highlighted in the Sequence window.

Click Send to Final Cut Pro or Send to Premiere Pro The Send to Final Cut Pro/Send to Premiere Pro icon is located at the bottom

right of the Composite Area’s Frame or press Command-S (Mac) or Ctrl-S (Win). Click or

when you have finished your Sequence and are ready to integrate it into your editing project. Once you have saved the Sequence to Final Cut Pro, it will automatically load into your Bin within Final Cut Pro and Martini will minimize to your Dock. After you save to Premiere Pro, the Sequence will save directly to your current project Bin. You can drag your Martini QuickShot Sequence from the Final Cut Pro Browser or Premiere Pro Bin and cut it into the desired position on your timeline. The Martini QuickShot Sequence can be moved and manipulated like any other sequence in your editing program. You may also double-click the Martini QuickShot Sequence and access the individual shots in Martini QuickShot.

Using Multiple Shot Sequences Multiple Shot Sequences are preset series of shots which represent an entire scene. For example, a Multiple Shot Sequence of a chase would include several shots which show a character running away from another character down different streets. These sequences have been included for quicker scene development or for use as templates. When you select a preset Multiple Shot Sequence, it will enter the Composite Area as multiple tabs along the top of the Frame.

These Tabs represent the individual shots within the Multiple Shot Sequence. Simply click on the desired tab to bring the shot into the frame where you can edit it. You can also simply type the number of the tab to quickly bring that shot into the Composite Area Frame. Select the next tab to switch to the next Shot; once you are done editing all of the Shots in the Multiple Shot Sequence, click

the icon to the right of the Frame to add the entire Multiple Shot Sequence to the Sequence Window. After rendering the Multiple Shot Sequence to the Sequence Window, and while the shots remain open the Composite Window, the frames will be highlighted indicating

they can be updated using the icon.

User Interface Martini’s user interface is comprised of four main areas which you will use to generate your shots. From within your editing program, this application is designed to create shots for integration within an editing sequence by providing the graphics and a space for arranging them in the user interface. The areas of Martini’s user interface include:

Shots Area Shots Navigation

Elements Area Background Characters Overlay Text Color

Composite Area Tabs Frame Composite Toolbar Export Tools

Sequence Window

Exit the Martini QuickShot Creator by clicking at the top left of the interface (Mac), clicking at the top right of the interface (Win), or by pressing your Esc key. Martini cannot be minimized while working on a Sequence; to access the Martini User’s Guide while working, simply move the Martini window out of the way of your PDF Reader. If you wish to exit Martini at any time, you can close and save your current project and return to it later. Control-click or right-click in any open area on the user interface to access to additional Martini options. Add to Sequence will add the current Composite Frame to the Sequence. Preferences will open the Preferences Window. To see tips and tricks about Martini, check out our online Video Tutorials or read our User’s Guide by clicking their respective options. Click Check for Updates periodically to ensure that your system is using the most recent build. About Martini will open the Martini QuickShot Creator User’s Guide.

Shots Area The Shots Area is located at the top of the Martini application. From here, you can determine what Shot Type will be used when a new shot is rendered. The Shot Types available are generic representations of how the major frame elements will be oriented using graphics of the shot’s location and characters. Single shots are represented in black and white. Multiple Shot Sequences will be displayed in color.

One Character, Medium Shot

Page 9: Martini QuickShot Creator Plug-in User’s Guide

Martini QuickShot Creator User’s Guide | Page 8 of 17

Three Characters, Medium Shot

Five Characters, Medium Shot

To start creating your shot, use the dropdown menu which lists the different Shot Types. By default, the shots are grouped by the number of characters in the shot. Multiple Shot Sequences are grouped together and listed at the bottom of the dropdown menu. To see all the Single Shot and Multiple Shot Types individually listed, select the checkbox “all” which is located to the right of the dropdown menu.

Shots Navigation

Below the Shot Type dropdown menu are four-directional navigation buttons which provide another way of accessing the Shot Types. The left and right buttons determine the number of characters present in your shot. You can increase the amount of characters by clicking the right navigation button and decrease the amount by clicking the left navigation button. Once an amount has been chosen, selecting the up or down navigation buttons will cycle through the Shot Types that have the specified amount of characters.

The button in the center will cycle to the next Multiple Shot Sequence. Multiple Shot Sequences are preset series of frames which represent the different individual shots within in a scene. These sequences have been included for quicker scene development or for use as templates from which to start designing a Multiple Shot Sequence.

Martini Tip: An additional shortcut for navigation through the Shot Types is clicking and dragging your cursor across the thumbnail to quickly cycle through the different options. Also, you can hold your mouse over the thumbnail and scroll with the mouse wheel.

Page 10: Martini QuickShot Creator Plug-in User’s Guide

Elements Area The Elements Area is located below the Shots Area. From here, you can specify what graphics and elements you want in your frame. The shots are composed of a background image, characters and text.

Background The Background Area provides images to determine the location of your shot. This area (pictured to right) includes a preview of the background item. Under the preview is a dropdown menu which will show the preloaded location images according to the category selected below (INT., EXT., or all). INT. is a category of interior location backgrounds and EXT. has exterior backgrounds. Choosing the My Locations category opens a Browse window where you can access any folder on your computer. After choosing a folder, the digital photos within the specified folder will appear in the dropdown menu and are available for use as a background. You can also navigate through the backgrounds by clicking and dragging your cursor across the preview thumbnail or by poising your mouse and scrolling with the mouse wheel to cycle through the different options within the chosen category.

Martini Tip: Name your digital photos within your specified Pictures folder and they will be easy to find in the My Locations dropdown menu. Names such as “Cabo Beach” will categorize and order your photo for quick use!

Below the background preview is a search bar where you can search for images. Type your search query within this search bar to filter the images within your selected category. Only the images that match your search query will appear in the dropdown menu.

Characters

The Characters Area allows you to populate your shots, representing the actors and their spatial relationships with one another and the background. To select a character, open and choose from the dropdown menu beneath one of the preview thumbnails.

Add a character by clicking above the preview thumbnails and remove selected characters by

clicking . You can also randomize the characters in the frame by selecting in the Characters Area. Also, you can navigate through the characters by clicking and dragging your cursor across the preview thumbnail to quickly cycle through the different options or by hovering your mouse over a thumbnail and scrolling with the mouse wheel. The characters are arranged by their order of layering in the frame: the character in the top layer appears to the far right of the Characters Area and the character furthest back in the frame will be on the far left.

Page 11: Martini QuickShot Creator Plug-in User’s Guide

Overlay Text

The Martini QuickShot Creator includes a feature which allows for in-frame caption text along the bottom of the shot. The Show Overlay

Text button toggles the Overlay Text on and off. The button next to it controls the font, style and size of the Overlay Text.

When the Overlay Text is deselected, you can use keyboard shortcuts to format your Overlay Text as bold (Mac: Command+Opt+b; Win: Ctrl+Alt+b) or italics (Mac: Command+Opt+i; Win: Ctrl+Alt+i). Toggle the formatting on by selecting the keyboard shortcut, and toggle the formatting off by selecting the keyboard shortcut.

Color

The Color Area determines the color of the elements in your shot. Select the Fill Selected Object

option, which causes the selected object to become a solid color, and then click the Fill Color ( ) button to choose the desired color. When determining the color of a Background, selecting Fill Selected Object will cause a flat-color background to be shown instead of your selected location. When coloring a Character, selecting Fill Selected Object will turn the character into a colored silhouette. Coloring text does not require selecting Fill Selected Object.

The transparency of the color-filled object can be chosen by clicking

Adjust Opacity ( ) and opening the Opacity Slider. Sliding the indicator to the far right brings the color to full opacity while sliding the indicator to the far left will bring the color to 0% opacity or transparent. You can create transparent shots to use as overlays in this way.

Page 12: Martini QuickShot Creator Plug-in User’s Guide

Composite Area The Composite Area hosts the Tabs, Frame Window, Composite Toolbar, and Export Tools, all of which allow the user to fine-tune the shots created in Martini QuickShot Creator.

Tabs The Tabs at the top of the Frame Window are used to navigate among the shots in a Multiple Shot Sequence, which can be edited and updated together as series within the Sequence window. Clicking a Tab (or typing a number) will bring that shot into the Frame for editing, and

clicking will add the entire Multiple Shot Sequence to the end of your rendered sequence in the Sequence window.

Frame The Frame is where the generated shot can be viewed and adjusted. Each frame you compose will represent a shot. The Frame is where you create the spatial relationships between the key elements of your shots. When using a digital camera to scout locations, you can substitute actual location photos to give more accuracy to your shots. You can also create a shot with a transparent background to overlay into your editing software with your existing video. During pre-production, this type of shot planning is called storyboarding. During production and post-production, these types of shots are used as temporary placeholders or “slugs” until final shots are filmed and edited into the final production.

After creating your shot, click the icon to the right of the Frame to render it and add it to the

end of your Sequence. If you’re editing a previously created shot, click to update that frame in the Sequence. Once you have saved a frame, continue working by choosing a new Shot Type, Background, etc., and create your next shot. By clicking a frame element, the selected object can be dragged into a new position or edited by the Characters Area or the Color Area. Selecting an object also makes that element available for editing with the Composite Toolbar. By Ctrl-clicking or right-clicking on a Character within the Composite Frame, a menu will appear which gives additional access to different commands applicable to the Characters. Undo will erase the last change within the Frame. Redo will reinstate the last undone action. Move to Front will bring the selected Character to the front-most layer. Move to Back will push the selected Character to the back-most layer. Cut will remove the selected Character from the Frame and place it on your Clipboard. Copy will place a duplicate of the Character onto your Clipboard.

Page 13: Martini QuickShot Creator Plug-in User’s Guide

Martini QuickShot Creator User’s Guide | Page 12 of 17

Paste will insert the content on your Clipboard into the Composite Frame. Clear will delete the selected Character from the Frame. Crop will allow you to create a mask for hiding or cropping areas from the selected Character. First select a character, and click the Crop Tool. Then click and drag in the frame to create an area on the character that you want to become invisible. This object represents the area of the Character which will be cropped from the Frame. The mask creation is similar to a drawing tool. Each time you click the mouse and draw with the mouse, an additional mask is created. When you are done creating a mask, right-click or Control-click and choose Done from the popup menu, or press Enter or Esc. To remove a mask, select Remove Mask or Remove All Masks from the Ctrl-click menu, or double-click on the mask. To draw a straight line, hold down the Command (Mac) or Ctrl (Win) key while moving your cursor. Hold down Shift while drawing to create vertical, horizontal, or diagonal lines. Flip Horizontal will mirror the selected Character horizontally, interchanging the left and right sides. Flip Vertical will mirror the selected Character vertically, interchanging the top and bottom of the Character. Rotate 90 will rotate the selected Character ninety degrees clockwise. Preferences will open the Preferences Window.

A menu of different commands applicable to the Background will appear by Ctrl-clicking or right-clicking on a Background within the Composite Frame. Undo will erase the last change within the Frame. Redo will reinstate the last undone action. Copy will place a duplicate of the Background onto your Clipboard. Paste will insert the content on your Clipboard into the Composite Frame. Flip Horizontal will mirror the Background horizontally, interchanging the left and right sides. Flip Vertical will mirror the Background vertically, interchanging the top and bottom of the Character. Rotate 90 will rotate the Background ninety degrees clockwise. Preferences will open the Preferences Window.
