he Fall brought some change to the Arts Council in an effort to be more supportive of our diverse arts community.

The management of ArtsFest, our annual arts festival and fund raising event, is back in house, with Clint Starling as Events & Sponsorship Manager. He will be working year-round to cultivate our events, social media and sponsorship support. Clint is a graduate of Martin County high school and Stetson University. Recently he has been a strong advocate for the issues facing the St Lucie River having organized several rallies last summer. He is one of the co-founders of the Lounge Series, designed to be an entertaining evening for people under 35 in Stuart! We’ve also added a part-time position to focus on two of our key mission-related programs: Arts Education and the Court House Cultural Center Galleries. Jennifer Hearn is a graduate of South Fork High School and FAU, majoring in Elementary Education. She has worked with Stuart Art Supply and many of our local artists for years and is an active volunteer in a local Parent Teacher Association. So, the next time you stop by the Court House Cultural Center, please say “hi” to Jennifer and Clint. They have added a new and refreshing dynamic to our long-standing team… Karen Barnes, Elaine Keller and Judy Walker. Working together with our many volunteers and board members, we can continue the legacy we started in 1980.

The mARTies Awards are recognizing many people who are dedicated to the cultural life of our community. Our profiles this edition feature three of the named award recipients who were honored at the February 13 event.

Jane Davis Doggett: mARTies 2014 Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award

ane Davis Doggett, an internationally acclaimed graphic designer, is one of the pioneering women artists to have trained at the Yale School of Art and Architecture during its modernist heyday. Her colorful and comprehensive thematic graphic identity and wayfinding systems now enliven many public complexes, including 40 international airport proj-

ects — more than any other designer in the world. Doggett has received acclaim for her designs on an international scale with her work published in Italy, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. In her later years she has returned to her artistic roots, exploring how color, geometry, and literature combine to express philosophically profound truths. Her work was recently on display at the Elliott Museum with artists Albers and Welliver. Doggett was on the founding board of directors for the Arts Council, and worked diligently to foster arts awareness in our community in the 1980’s and really, ever since. She works with the Town of Jupiter Island and their arts-related activities.

teer life. Often referred to as Stuart’s Cultural Ambassador, Ron has promoted more than 60 shows on the Riverwalk Stage through the Rockin’ Riverwalk Music Series and works closely with both the Downtown Busi-ness Association and Stuart Main Street. Staying true to his passions, Ron’s cur-rent business ventures, Terra Fermata and Earthtones have an eclectic, rocking vibe which adds to the artistic culture of our historic downtown.

Bridget Glass:mARTies 2014

Excellence in Arts Education Award

ridget Glass was born in New York City and moved to South Florida as a teenager where she attended Lincoln Park Academy and earned a Bachelors

of Music degree from Palm Beach Atlan-tic University. She attended Florida Atlantic University as a Masters of Arts Degree candi-date. Ms. Glass has been a Music Educator for 9 years and has sung professionally since the age of 16. She is a proud member of the Flori-da Vocal Association. While choral director at Stuart Middle School she has grown the choral program from 55 students to 146. Among her many accomplishments are having the greatest number of boys enrolled as compared to the middle school choral programs in Martin County. Her students have participated in many com-munity projects and outreach, supporting Music Education throughout the country.

rtsFest is the Treasure Coast’s most beloved and best-attended event showcasing fine artists hailing from throughout the country in a juried art show, and tal-ented musicians with local and regional followings.

Beautiful Memorial Park will be transformed once again into a celebration of the arts.

ArtsFest 2014 promises to bring a new interpretation of the nearly 30 year old event with several new and exciting initiatives. The ArtsFest After Dark kickoff party on Friday, March 14th 7:00 – 11:00 pm will feature live bands, good food and craft beers to get the festival off to a more ener-getic start this year.

The Local Artists’ Tent is a new feature that will give south Florida the ability to showcase all the great artistic talent in the area! This feature is sure to bring some exciting new art into the show!

New food! That’s right foodies, ArtsFest 2014 will have a whole new focus on gourmet foods! The food, beer and recreation area centered around our main stage will fea-ture many local restaurants and food trucks serving up the best of the best on the treasure coast from artichokes to authentic Mexican tacos! Of course, in keeping with Arts-Fest great tradition there will be plenty of craft beers and fantastic wines! Take a break from shopping, kick back and have a bite to eat with a beer while enjoying a performance from our wonderful entertainment line-up on the big stage. However, the music doesn’t stop there; roving musi-cians will be filling the park with fun and excitement so keep an eye, or ear, open for an impromptu performance while browsing through over 100 artists’ booths.

ArtsFest 2014 arrives just in time for St. Patty’s Day weekend this year and we have just the thing to get you’re celebration started properly; Sunday morning Irish Brunch! The stage will be filled with Irish step dancing girls and the Rowdy Micks Irish Band while VIP attendees will be filled with delicious Irish food and beverages! This separate VIP ticket will include: the brunch, park entrance and VIP access all day.

These are just a few examples of the many new and exciting additions to this well established event. ArtsFest 2014 will be the 28th year that the Treasure Coast has come together to celebrate the arts in our area and it is shaping up to be the biggest and best ArtsFest yet!

Amber Moran: Featured ArtsFest ArtistAmber Moran said: “I am honored and excited to have been asked to be this year’s ArtsFest featured artist. I have been passionate about and inspired by both the art world and our natural environment since I was a young girl. I am motivated to show viewers our surround-ings here in Florida in a different approach us-ing watercolors and ink, whether it be related to the ocean or in the wild. In this Osprey and Mangrove piece I created for this year’s event, I wanted to simply portray a scene we all know well here on the Treasure Coast, and would

make us think of home.” Amber enjoys studying marine life not only to enhance her artwork but to inspire her boys who already have a love for the ocean to also have a love for coastal conservation as they grow older. Amber lives in Stuart with her husband and two young boys.

TEN WOMEN IN ART: Personal Baggage

TEN WOMEN IN ART are celebrating 30 years as an organization, having had their first exhibit in 1984. Nancy Dillen, Ellen Pavlakos, and Susan Martin are founding mem-bers, so the membership has changed through the years. “We’ve met some wonderful wom-en artists during those thirty years. We’ve celebrated successes and shared tragedies, both personal and professional. We enjoy one another’s company so much that we often find it difficult to discuss the business of the group rather than art. There is a bond, a common passion that unites us, as corny as that sounds. And producing art is a solitary activity so we welcome the shared time together,” stated Susan Martin.

New Public Art: Colorado Avenue,

Florida Water Bird Sculptures

THE CITY OF STUART is proposing a new public art installation as part of the City of Stuart’s Centennial Celebration. Along with private dona-tions, the City has requested funding from the NEA for this project which will commission wildlife artist Geoffrey C. Smith to sculpt six (6) Florida Water Birds. The “Florida Water Bird Sculptures” will welcome resi-dents and visitors to our beautiful waterfront commu-nity. The placement of the centerpiece sculpture in the traffic circle at the intersection of Colorado Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard will join the three districts: the traditional African American com-munity/East Stuart Main Street, the historic Down-town and the US 1 Corridor. Enhancing Arts Education:Through Plein Air Day

his third annual event for advanced high school art students is an inten-sive program with local, profession-

al artists. By taking students into field to study, as so many our most admired artists in history have, they are following in the footsteps of these grand masters.

The Pine School, Clark Advanced Learn-ing Center, Martin County, South Fork and Jensen Beach high schools will in total bring 75 students to this full-day program. Supported with funds from Target and the “State of the Arts” license plate program, this year’s program takes place with our location hosts at Sunlight Ranches and the FL TRAC Tying the arts education program to our “Inside Track” exhibition enables this education program to spread its wings and take on new meaning for the students and artists, alike. Additional in-kind support and product discounts fur-ther the reach of our program with credit to Stuart Art Supply.

Following Frances Langford’s long standing philanthropic support of our community, the Frances Langford Foundation has invested in many of the same organizations that she funded during her lifetime, such as Florida Oceanographic Society, United Way of Martin County and Martin Memorial Hospital. Her legacy has been carried forward by the trustees of the Frances Langford Foundation, Evans Crary and John Turner, with gifts to the Elliott Museum campaign, Florida Arts & Dance Company, and the Arts Council among others. Ms. Langford’s career included acting and singing in more than 30 films.

Nominated by Palm City Art Associates With a Master’s Degree from Columbia University, Jane Blatt taught children with learning disabilities for 32 years. Upon retirement to Martin County, FL she immediately immersed herself in the art community. Jane, painting under the name “Ejan”, has garnered many awards and exhibited in numerous juried shows. Jane is best known for her three dimensional palette knife paintings of birds.

WOMEN SUPPORTING THE ARTSWomen Supporting the Arts Announce 2014 Grant RecipientsSINCE 2004, more than $200,000 has been awarded to artists and arts-related programs by Women Supporting the Arts (WSA). This year grants tallied to just over $17,000, An additional allocation was made to the growing WSA-Public Art Fund bringing that fund to $15,000. WSA-Public Art dollars are being reserved for a future investment in sculp-ture in a prominent public location. Applications are judged by the members of WSA on the following criteria: value to the community in strengthening the arts; merit of the pro-gram, project, scholarship, or internship; increase of public awareness and participation in the arts; and partnerships and collaborations with existing community resources.

An award-winning performer, Lindsay has received top prizes at the 2011 Montreal International Piano Compe-tition, the 2011 Yale Woolsey Concerto Com-petition, the 2010 Mozarteum International Chopin Competition (Salzburg), the Fite Family Competition, the Sarasota Artist Series Compe-tition, the Connecticut Music Teachers Young Artist Competition, and the Music Teacher Na-tional Association’s Young Artist’s Competition. Lindsay holds degrees from Principia College (B.A. in Music) and Yale School of Music (M.M. and Artist Diploma). Her piano teachers include Boris Berman, Luiz de Moura Cas-tro, Zena Ilyashov, Emilio Del Rosario, the late Jane Allen, and Jennifer Lim.

A FOND FAREWELL TO INSIDE TRACK

“We were very excited to host the Inside Track exhibi-tion celebrating Martin County’s equestrian roots in Mar-tin County with Payson Park, one of the most respected training facilities in the circuit. In fact, last year’s Kentucky Derby winner Orb trained at Payson Park. This show was

a great example of how we, at the Arts Council, try to tie the arts together with our greater community,” noted Nancy Turrell, Executive Director at The Arts Council of Mar-tin County. Several pieces sold during the course of the exhibition as well as Anthony Alonso’s fine art books. Our partnership with Florida Thoroughbred Rehabilitation and Adoptive Care Center brought in many people from the ranches of western Mar-tin County. Florida TRAC received a generous donation from sculptor, Mindy Colton, to assist them in their efforts to care for aging thorough-breds. At the Winner’s Circle Din-ner donated and sponsored by Diamonds by Terry, in sup-port of the equestrian themed exhibition “Inside Track”, the highlight of the evening was when Mary Alonso pulled out Jane Koppe’s (mother of Kadee Alonso)number and she won the beautiful pen-dant, created by Terry Rieger. According to the family, this pendant has now become an Alonso family heirloom and will be treasured by all.
