Martin County students have an advantage. As other school districts across the state have reduced and eliminated arts education, our schools have a continued tradition of strong arts programs at every level. Our schools and their students are winning awards at every turn, examples include both MCHS’s OPUS’s and JBHS’s Jubilate’s Heritage Awards and the selection two years running of a JBHS visual arts student as Congressman Rooney’s Congressional Art Award winner. How is this level of arts achievement possible? One reason: dedicated teachers. Many such as Judy Nordenbrock, Robbie Roadman, and Tom Prestopnik have retired in the last several years and will be joined by Tom Wetzl this year. But many remain steadfast in their efforts to inspire their students to be the best, including Jimmy Paul, Krystal Wion-Eckhardt, Anne Marie Schwartz, Ron Corbin, and Tracy Canada. It gives me great hope as I look forward with optimism for what these students will bring to the world either as practicing artists or as leaders with an innovative and creative spirit for finding solutions to the challenges that face our society. The Council remains steadfast in its efforts to promote, encourage, and enhance programs countywide for arts education. Throughout this issue of MartinArts are great examples of the creativity found in our local schools. I invite you to take a look and see for yourself.

Thomas’ photo, Wave Action, a thrilling sunrise seen from a storm-tossed beach, was chosen by Congressman Tom Rooney for the Congressional Art Competition for 2011. Each spring, a nation-wide high school art competition is sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives. The contest is an opportunity to encourage and recognize the artistic talent from around the nation, as well as our Congressional District. This annual competition is open to all district high school students. Thomas is a student at JBHS, and also won a photo contest this year at the Environmental Studies Center. Wave Action will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol in Washington.
Congressional Art Award 2010Kelsea, a recent graduate of JBHS, is an award-winning fiber artst. Her quilts reflect the many hours she spends in the careful design and execution of complex sewing techniques, with strong colors, imagery and composition. Her works are not traditional home-spun pieces. She is a 21st century artist who has been recognized with a Congressional Art Award and a Gold Key from the Scholastic Art Awards. Kelsea volunteered her time and talents for the Invisible Children Art Auction, the Stuart Beach Community Mural and the American Cancer Society. Kelsea will be attending the School of the Arts in Palatka, continuing her studies in Fiber Art.T

Jennifer & Peter Jones- StarStruck and Following Their Dreams Last month, Jennifer and Peter Jones announced the exciting news thatStarStruck, their theatre and training center, was moving to a new location: the former Palm Beach Post Newspaper building in Stuart. This new space means a new performance theatre and workshop space in this culture-hungry community. Previously the StarStruck productions have been staged at the Lyric Theatre. The new performance space will be located at 2101 South Kanner Highway on the corner of Central Parkway. StarStruck is celebrating its 12th year presenting musical theatre productions as well as providing instruction in acting, dance, piano, voice, guitar and art. and includes a professional faculty of dance, art, music and acting instructors.
Currently, StarStruck produces over 10 shows per year—a number that will increase in their new facility. The new building is about 12,000 square feet and will house all of StarStruck’s training classrooms, private music studios and rehearsal areas, as well as a 200 seat state-of-the-art theatre with a lobby and adjoining backstage area for dressing rooms, costumes, props and scenery storage. StarStruck hopes to provide a venue that is affordable and accessible to the community at large. Non-Profit and For-Profit organizations will now have the ability to produce a variety of events including, but not limited to band concerts, improv troupes, cabaret shows, school recitals, innovative arts programming and more.

Demolition Making way for the New Elliott Construction of the New Elliott museum began on June 1, 2011 with demolition of the old building which is expected to be completed by mid-June. A concrete slab is scheduled to be poured in July launching the beginning of the new 44,000 square foot museum, a venue that will be twice the size of the old building. Scheduled to reopen in early 2013, the museum will meet requirements for travelingexhibitions. For five decades, the Elliott Museum, owned and operated by the Historical Society of Martin County, has served
as a cultural and educational resource for thousands of residents, tourists, automotive and baseball enthusiasts. A non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting our region’s history, the mission of the Elliott Museum is to interpret and celebrate the genius of innovation, creativity and the historical events in Martin County and the surrounding region, all within an environment of learning and discovery.

911 Story?
Lighting up the Court House Cultural in vivid color is a new lighting system installed by Electrical Connections who partnered with Bright Ideas LED. The new state-of-the-art system, currently set to rotate in all the colors of the rainbow, brings new attention to the historic building at night! Already new daytime visitors have be heard to say, “I came in today because I noticed the building last night when it was lit up.” Mike Pettengill of Electrical Connections said, “We wanted to make this historic art deco building more visible, highlighting its unique architectural details and creating more awareness of its artistic functions.” Nancy Turrell, executive director of the Arts Council said, “the lighting,
combined with the extensive landscaping installed two years ago during Stuart’s entry in the America in Bloom contest, has
improved our curb appeal. We are grateful that local businesses like Electrical Connections and Kenny Teardo’s landscape company are so willing to give back to us and the community.” She
added, “now all we need are some beautiful benches to allow visitors to relax and enjoy the courtyard.” The Court House Cultural Center is on the National Register of Historic Places and was built in 1937. To learn more about its former uses, visit the photo gallery located on the landing inside the Court House Cultural Center. The Center is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 am to 4 pm and Saturday, 11 am to 2 pm.

Gala Grand Opening of Allegro More than 100 people gathered (on what date?) to celebrate the Treasure Coast arrival of a community acclaimed for transforming senior living. Arts and culture served as the centerpiece of the grand opening gala for Allegro, who donated all proceeds for the event to the Arts Council. Guests were entertained with music by jazz vocalist Sybil Gage as well as performances by the Bach Children’s Orchestra. The audience included notables such as Jim Simoneau, chairman of the Arts Council’s board; Stuart City Commissioners Mike Mortell, Eula Clarke and Troy MacDonald; Martin County Commissioners Patrick
Hayes, Doug Smith and Ed Ciampi; Steve Leighton, Rep. Tom Rooney’s Treasure Coast congressional liaison, and others. “We are excited to be partnering with Allegro in the spirit of the arts which is a shared passion,” enthusedNancy Turrell, executive director of the Arts Council.
