mosaic provides it with a personal touch. Much attention is paid to

a careful choice of colours, dimensions, and the installation itself.

However, all those efforts could prove in vain if stress from outside

(such as temperature changes, sun, frost, moisture or mechanical

Our factory operates a zero waste policy where all waste material

from MARMOX Board PRO / ULTRA production is recycled into other

1. IntroductionMARMOX Board – Tile Backer Boards are made of XPS-foam with glass fibre

reinforced cement coating. The special XPS-benefit is that its thermal insulation

properties are not affected whatsoever by wet or damp conditions. So the boards are

resistant against water, moisture and humidity and they are non-capillary, light weight

and easy to cut - ideal prerequisites for multi-purpose application, especially in wet

room areas.

MARMOX Board – Tile Backer Boards are recommended for use on walls, floors, and to

build or insert wash tables, shelves, claddings, insulations under electric heating wires or

partition walls. The options to use the boards are wide and creative.

The surface of MARMOX Board– Tile Backer Boards is suitable for the application

of tiles, mosaic, natural stone, plasters or putties. The boards allow a quick, easy, and

creative construction without or reduced drying time.

1.1. Composition

Composition of MARMOX Board - Tile Backer Boards

MARMOX Board - Tile Backer Boards are made from CFC- and HCFC-free extruded

polystyrene foam (XPS). The closed cell structure of XPS-foam is water-resistant with

good insulation properties.

MARMOX Board PRO

The surfaces of MARMOX Board PRO are covered from both sides with an alkali-

resistant glass fibre mesh embedded in polymerised cement mortar. A newly developed

production technology ensures an excellent embedding of the reinforcing glass fibre

mesh in the special cement mortar. The characteristic honey comb finishing is the

outstanding feature of the very strong and professional MARMOX Board PRO. The

mechanical properties of MARMOX Board PRO, such as compressive strength, improved

bonding strength and shear strength, are some of the best in the market.

MARMOX Board ULTRA

MARMOX Board ULTRA are made of extruded polystyrene foam boards, covered on

both sides with special polymeric cement mortar, reinforced with alkali resistance glass

fiber mesh providing a very special surface texture which ensures a good adhesion to

tile adhesive. The extruded polystyrene foam boards are CFC, HCFC and HBCD free. The

boards are tough, extra light weight and water resistant. The surface is ready for tiling.

The main advantage of MARMOX Board ULTRA is the extraordinary light weight and

water vapor proofing properties. The boards are suitable for use as a substrate for tiles

in dry as well as wet areas and very humid rooms. The boards are water impermeable

and heat insulating. They are very easy to cut and to use and simple to install.

The glass fibre mesh is fully embedded in special cement mortar, covering the mesh

completely, in order to optimise the absorption of mechanical strengths. Due to that

MARMOX Board PRO are characterized by excellent mechanical properties.

A special feature of MARMOX Board ULTRA is the new coating structure, based on a

polymer-cement composition with fibreglass mesh. The new feature makes the board lighter

mortar reinforced with an alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh, coated.

The specially modified coating and the selected materials result in a direct comparison

with MARMOX Board PRO advantages that greatly simplify the handling and processing of

MARMOX Board PRO / ULTRA is very easy to install on floors provided that the

underground is prepared to be flat, rigid and clean. A complete embedding of the boards

without hollow spaces is required if the boards are used on floors. The boards should be

installed in a staggered pattern. An additional mechanical fixing of the boards is possible

and we recommend use of 5 nails/screws per m².

MARMOX Board PRO / ULTRA is suitable for installation on metal and timber frame walls

as well as on brick and concrete walls. It is preferable to install the long side of the board

vertically in a staggered pattern. The fastening can be done using screws and/or glue,

either applied complete or partial. All available thicknesses of MARMOX Board PRO /

ULTRA are suitable for wall application. Boards of 4 mm and 6 mm thickness need to be

glued completely without hollows on a stable substrate.

4.2. Installation on floors

General steps for the installation of MARMOX Board PRO / ULTRA

on concrete floors

01. The substrate should be levelled, oil and dust free, dry and stable. If necessary, a

primer can be applied.

02. We recommend using a flexible cement-based tile adhesive, combed out with a

10 mm trowel, creating a ribbed adhesive bed. The boards have to be fully bedded

to ensure no void under them.

03. Align the boards vertically and horizontally in a staggered pattern.

04. When the adhesive is cured, apply the glass fibre mesh to the joints, embedded into

flexible tile adhesive.

General steps for the installation of MARMOX Board PRO / ULTRA

on timber floors

01. All MARMOX Board PRO / ULTRA with a minimum thickness of 10 mm is suitable to

be used on timber floors.

02. Timber floors must be dry, rigid, checked for flatness, oil and dust free.

03. The floor must be primed according to the manufacturers’ instructions before the

flexible cement adhesive can be applied with a notched trowel. The boards have to

be laid in a staggered pattern, fully bedded to ensure no voids under the boards.

04. When the adhesive is cured, apply fibre glass tape to the joints, embedded into

flexible tile adhesive.

05. After the flexible tile adhesive has dried, secure the boards with screws or nails and

washers at the rate of 5 fixings per sqm, close to the sides and in the middle of the

boards.

06. The floor is now prepared for the intended use.

MARMOX Board PRO / ULTRA on metal and timber frame walls

All MARMOX Board PRO / ULTRA with a minimum thickness of 10 mm is suitable for the

installation of frame walls. We recommend considering a studs distance of 300 mm

if MARMOX Board PRO / ULTRA with 10 mm or 12.5 mm will be used. A studs distance

of 600 mm is recommended if boards with 20 mm thickness or more are used.

Use galvanised or stainless steel or self-cutting screws with washers. The screws should

be at least 20 mm longer than the boards’ thickness.

Working steps:

01. Frame walls

02. Fixing with screws and covering of joints with glass fibre mesh or sealing tape,

embedded in a layer of flexible tile adhesive.

03. Once the adhesive has cured, tiles can be fixed and grouted.

04. Ready to use.

MARMOX Board PRO / ULTRA on brick or concrete walls

For even, clean and sound walls, use flexible tile adhesive combed out with a notched

trowel. Then the boards are thoroughly bedded in a staggered pattern and aligned

vertically and horizontally.

An additional mechanical fixing with a rate of 5 screws per sqm is recommended if the

wall surface bonding capacity is weak and does not allow strong bonding. Cover all

joints with glass fibre mesh or sealing tape, embedded in a layer of flexible tile adhesive.

For uneven walls use Boards with 20 mm thickness or more. Drill the boards at the place

of dowels at the rate of 5 dowels per sqm. Place dabs of tile adhesive on the holes. The

boards have to be laid in a staggered pattern, aligned vertically and horizontally. Once

the tile adhesive has cured, drill the board through the holes into the wall and insert

dowels, washers and screws/nails. Cover all joints with glass fibre mesh or sealing tape,

embedded in a layer of flexible tile adhesive.

Installation steps:

01. Drill 5 holes per m² at the fixing points of boards, place dabs at the position of the

holes on the back side of the boards.

02. Align the boards vertically and horizontally in the right place.

03. Drill through the holes in the boards into the wall, insert dowels and arrange the

fixing with screws/nails.

04. Cover all joints with glass fibre mesh or sealing tape, embedded in a layer of flexible

tile adhesive.

6. MARMOX Board PRO / ULTRA - FlexMARMOX Board - Flex are flexible boards designed to bend to the required curve ready for

mosaic tiling. The boards are created to make curved designs more achievable in a fast and

price competitive way.


The flex boards are designed for curved coverings or partition walls, e.g. coverings of

whirlpools, round shower areas, and columns.

MARMOX Board - Flex are available with longitudinal and transversal cuts.

9. MARMOX Board PRO - Insulation under electric underfloor heating systemMARMOX Board PRO is designed for application under electric underfloor heating systems.

The boards are heat insulating, compressive resistant, and ready for tiling. The boards are

available in a wide range of different thicknesses from 6 mm - 100 mm, which affect the reaction

time and the energy consumption accordingly.


Electric underfloor heating is particularly popular in kitchens and bathrooms. Heating

cables are mainly embedded in self-levelling compounds or flexible tile adhesive, directly

installed on concrete floors. In cases where no insulation under the heating wires is ins-

talled, the energy loss can reach 40% of the total energy consumption for the heating of

the basement and not for the tiles.

That effect is a considerable disadvantage for the comfort and effectiveness of electric

underfloor heating systems.

The installation of MARMOX Board PRO for insulation under the electric underfloor

heating system, either on concrete, screed or wood construction provides two main

advantages:

ACC001 - reinforcing fibre mesh tape 25 m x 100 mm

The tape is used to reinforce the joints between the boards and should be embedded into

flexible tiles adhesive.
