introduction

It is now more than 100 years since Henry Round first published a brief report after observing light emission from a SiC (Silicon Carbide). Then in 1927 a radio technician in St Petersburg noticed that crystal diodes used in radio receivers emitted light when current flowed through them. Sometime in the 1960’s, Robert Hall and Nick Holonyak of General Electric Company were responsible for the development of LEDs as semiconductor devices as production of the standardised models based on 3mm and 5mm through hole LEDs as we know them today. Marl was one of the first companies to pioneer application solutions by innovating packaging technologies to allow the end user to maximise the potential benefits from this new lighting technology but in a variety of styles including PCB mounting, panel mounting and the world’s first electronic light bulbs.

In 2013 Marl is celebrating 40 years of LED excellence, including the first LED replacement in mainland UK for an underground railway signal!

Marl is based in Ulverston, Cumbria, in the UK. From this historic market town located on the fringe of the English Lake District, Marl operates its own business park, and houses a horizontally integrated comprehensive design and manufacturing facility.

As a UK designer and manufacturer, Marl welcomes visitors to the factory to see the products being manufactured and also have a full range of demonstrations and test facilities. Alternatively, Marl are always pleased to arrange on site technical support visits and demonstrations.

As LED devices became more efficient, brighter and with a wider colour spectrum, including white, the Marl product range evolved from indication, to task lighting and is now ready to tackle general illumination. the Marl brand has been synonymous with high quality product performance for 40 years and these innovative lighting products offer the best led technology that is available today.

A theme which runs consistently throughout this range is robust design in order to create products which really do work for the applications for which they are intended. For example, we are confident that the 071 Series Flat Panel unit offers a low profile light source which will work effectively in a huge range of internal commercial and domestic applications, whilst the ruggedised nature of the 774 and 748 Series means they will offer years of reliable service in quarries and similarly demanding environments. The 742 Wallpack offers a contemporary equivalent to a very well known and trusted wallpack design.

Although the focus of this catalogue is solid state lighting based on white LED technology, bear in mind that Marl has the capability to design, manufacture and supply full RGBA (Red, Green, Blue, Amber) and RGBAW (Red, Green, Blue, Amber, White) components, products and fully integrated systems.
