PURE PARLER WITH MARK FARHAT
Walking down the streets of London on a Sunday morning after a blizzard is a task
for strong hearts. One that makes you appreciate little warm things in life like hot tea
and true talent. Being the former much more widely available than the latter, I decided
to have mine with Mark Farhat.
Mark is simply In. Inspired. Intelligent. In love. Able to build an instant connection by
very simple means like a smile, a witty joke, a friendly word. Mark doesn’t talk, he
whispers. Hence calling for a deeper attention to catch the inner sense of what makes
him stand out as a human being and a fashion designer.
Mark / Giusti was presented for the first time a year ago at Shoreditch House, a very
well known member’s club in London. The collection was presented in a beautiful way
(the items theatrically lit and displayed in a series of wonderful vintage trunks) and
was very well received by the editors, some of which point M/G as one of the hottest

new brands to watch closely. A rising star if you will.
The philosophy of the brand blends prestigious materials and perfect Italian making
with a middle eastern sense of beauty and colour that reflects Mark’s upbringing more
than anything else. Raised by an art collector diplomat father and caught at an early
age by the beauty of mosaics, Mark brings back in a simple way the geometric
perfection of byzantine tiles and the intense hues distinctive of this fine art, molding
them around a sense of practicality that reflects in the shapes of his designs.
“Most of the designs I’ve chosen are not forward in the sense of appealing to the
average fashionista. I chose shapes that I think are elegant and added small details
that make them stand out in a new way “ says Mark. “Most of the products in my first
collection are very structured and geometric in a way, but at the same time I’ve
chosen very soft leathers. I like the contrast between solid shapes and supple
materials and I like to focus on products entirely made by hand.”
Yes, there is more to Mark / Giusti than meets the eye. And yes, the tea was
delicious.

MARK FARHAT INTERVIEWIN
WASAFIX.COMhttp://www.wasafix.com/2010/10/07/interview-
mark-farhat-markgiusti-wasafix-com/
SEPTEMBER 23RD 2010
WasaFix: Hello Mark, thank you for being here with us in Milan for this interview. You have just
launched your brand new men’s accessories collection “BRING BACK TIME” and it seems to be
successful, did you expect this feedback? How do you feel about the success of your first
collection?
Mark Farhat: Thank you for having me Franck. Yes, I launched my first collection “Bring Back
Time” at Shoreditch House in London on the 9th of June 2010. The event was very successful! We
had a really nice mixture of press journalists, retail buyers and select VIPS – all of whom expressed
their appreciation for the superior quality and elegant design detail of our products. I am very
pleased with the outcome. It was great to have this positive feedback and support from everyone
who attended the launch.
W: You were born in Lebanon, graduated from the American University of Beirut, came to London
to complete your Academic Masters Degree, experienced New York working for famous brands,
then came back to the U.K. to launch your own brand. How and why did you get into fashion?
M.F.: Yes, I was born in Lebanon yet I spent much of my childhood growing up in Libya, Republic
of Congo (Formerly Zair) and Gabon. We traveled around quite a bit as my father was an
ambassador. I returned to Lebanon in my adulthood to do the official baccalaureate exams with the
hope that I follow in the footsteps of my father. I have always loved fashion and was always
drawing sketches of wedding gowns and accessories as early as I can remember. However, at that
time boys in Lebanon did not study fashion especially if they came from highly regarded families.
So, early on, I decided it might be best to do a general business administration degree at the
American University of Beirut. I then moved to London and completed my MA in Marketing
Management specializing in Fashion and Luxury brands at the University of Westminster. I was
employed by Capelli NY, a manufacturer of fashion accessories, based in New York, where I
became responsible for their men’s accessories in the UK. In 2009, I finally decided to pursue my
long lived dream for fashion accessories in Milan, where I attended Instituto Di Moda, Burgo. I
established Mark/Giusti in March 2009 and recently launched my first collection “Bring Back
Time”.

W: Most of the fashion brands and collections are based on a future trend but have a core
philosophy behind it that drives and influences their own collection’s designs. How do you define
your philosophy? Is that Byzantine Mosaics art that actually influence the interior design and are
details of your collections the core philosophy behind Mark/Giusti brand? What is your relation
with Byzantine Mosaics and art?
M.F.: My childhood has been very influenced by my father who is a collector of art and mosaics. I
grew up following him to antique fairs and auctions, watching him examine beautiful pieces of
history as he explained to me the origin of each one of them. WE had so many wonderful books, of
Byzantine mosaics in particular, that I grew up loving those beautiful patterns from antiquity. The
more I traveled around Italy, the more I wanted to see the mosaic wall decorations, paintings and
marble floors in byzantine Churches and Medieval houses that I used to see in my father’s books
when I was a child. I fell in love with these designs all over again – especially those beautiful
geometric patterns that seemed to have been forgotten. When I decided to establish Mark/Giusti, I
wanted to give the brand an identity, not only to differentiate it from other brands in the market but
to impart a spirit of classical masculinity, artistic craftsmanship and timeless beauty. Bringing these
designs back to life through our accessories infuses each and every mark/Giusti product with an
opulent history and faithful character. It is a perfect union: my love of Byzantine Mosaics and my
love of fashion.

W: Actually there are a few items in your collections because we could categorize them in
something like “haute-couture-accessory”, your brand is specialized in the bags and leather
accessories production, a new design style you define fresh and classic, that fits with a modern man
and active lifestyle, what is your main target, how do you define the ideal Mark/Giusti customer?
M.F.: I classify Mark/Giusti as understated luxury to the highest degree and this can be seen from
the superior craftsmanship to the beautifully detailed designs of the interior of all our products.
Mark/Giusti is for the modern successful man looking for luxury that is not “Commercial” and not
“In your Face”. I wanted the brand to have this subtle quality that draws people to it -like a treasure.
This is also why I have created “My M/G” which is the exclusive bespoke brand for Mark/Giusti –
“Haute-couture-Accessory” as you have called it. Customers can create their “”Own Mark/Giusti”
by choosing their own Mosaic pattern, type of leather, colors and even shapes of the bags. My M/G
is created for those who want a product that is even more unique and cannot be found anywhere else
– their own special treasure in a way.

W: We enjoyed your collections in London this summer, you are in Milan for business, what is the
next step for Mark/Giusti ? New collections? New items? What could we expect in the future of
Mark/Giusti brand?
M.F.: This only my first collection for Mark/Giusti and it is just the beginning. I am currently
working on the next A/W 2011-2012 collection which will be presented in January 2011. This will
include building on a few existing bag ranges as well as adding a completely new category of
accessories to the current ones. Mark/Giusti will also be launching the online Boutique Shop this
November and customers will be able to purchase all of our products online.
We are also working on a few projects with one of the main charity organizations in the UK as well
as a few other collaborations with other designers. This will be announced later on this year.
