Winner of SWHAP Achievement Award 2012 - Most Innovative Intervention In order to recognize the importance of being innovative when addressing HIV in the workplace, the Swedish Workplace HIV and AIDS Programme (SWHAP) instituted an award for the most innovative intervention. The 2012 award goes to Scania South Africa for the Road Safety campaign among truck and bus drivers. Scania is heavily involved in all matters of road safety in all its market around the world and takes part in numerous road safety campaign and initiatives. In South Africa, the holiday season usually sees traffic volumes soar and there is therefore an increase in the number of accidents. Scania South Africa together with National Road Agency and Pick n’ Pay put together a campaign to reduce the risk of unsafe trucks and busses on the roads through-out Gauteng between the 12 and 23 December 2011. Since the wellbeing of drivers plays a vital role in ensuring safe driving, the innovative approach of conducting “wellness” checks for drivers as well as their vehicles was thought up. All drivers were offered the opportunity to take a health test as well as voluntary counselling and testing (VCT). The results of the innovative campaign were impressive. 218 different companies participated in the wellness screening and VCT and 333 individuals participated in the wellness screening process. In addition, there were 42 individuals who tested positive, many of whom did not know their status previously. All drivers who tested positive were then offered appropriate support and a service provider followed up with them for a number of months after the campaign. P.O. Winner of SWHAP Achievement Award 2012- Most Innovative Intervention

In order to recognize the importance of being innovative when addressing HIV in the workplace, the Swedish Workplace HIV and AIDS Programme (SWHAP) instituted an award for the most innovative intervention.

The intervention clearly utilised Scania’s core competencies and the Board congratulates Scania for the innovative idea coupled with the tangible results – in terms of the number of drivers who conducted VCT, the partnerships developed as well as the number of companies reached. It is highly recommended that this initiative becomes an on-going event that is well marketed and communicated as it will benefit the industry as well as a long-distance driver who are considered one of the groups most susceptible to HIV.
