Plot

• Micky is an 18 year old teen. Lucy, his mother is suffering from manic depression because of the death of her husband (Steve), this means she needs constant care and attention. Steve (ex-gang leader of ‘The Jonnies’) was murdered when Micky was 13 due to a gang related crime.

• Micky, now thinks he must commit crimes e.g robbery and muggings to raise money to support him and his mother. He also seeks revenge for his fathers death against ‘The Burger Bar’ gang.

• Throughout his life struggle he meets a girl called Rachel who he later falls in love with. Later in the film Rachel is killed in a drive-by, this causes Micky to find out members of ‘The Burger Bar’ and get revenge. In the process of this Micky himself is murdered leaving his mother by herself.

Target Audience• The characters are an ‘E’ on the grade classification,

so this means it would appeal more to a target audience of ‘C1/C2’. This prediction is because middle class viewers may sympathies or empathies with the characters, even though they may have a negotiated reading, compared with ‘A/B’, not all will have a resistant reading.

• The film would also target people of a younger age (15+) because of the involvement of / issues raised

about, younger people.

Institutions and Audiences

• We took our inspiration from Shane Meadows who was successful in a number of low-budget films therefore production companies that have worked with him before, would be more likely to work with us.

• As our film falls in the category of a low budget film, it will comment on society and the issues raised in everyday life, production companies such as Big Arty, UK film council would be ideal for our film.

Representation

Our film will be set in Birmingham in Britain, we will used real gang names to show realism, to heighten the feel of ‘britishness’ our actors will have a thick Birmingham accent.

The way our actors will act will be described as mediation, as we are showing our interpretation of these people. Another strong point of ‘britishness; will be that the roads and signs will be B*ritish rules (highway code).

Page 9: Marked for Life

Research• We decided to research film trailers such as ‘Dead mans shoes’ and

‘This is England’ for influence on techniques used in low budget films. • We instantly decided the genre of our film to be social-realism as we

wanted a naturalistic effect to coincide with the plot and characters we created.

• Information gathered from the film trailers inspired us to research, in depth, Shane Meadows and what film companies he worked with to produce and distribute the films.

• Techniques such as the use of a voice over or sound bridge for an establishment (I.e Genre, age, location, main character, etc), are very effective. Also the use of Black and White (grey scale) in editing, this helps give a ‘past’ effect, to give the audience a clearer understanding of what they are watching.

Page 10: Marked for Life

Location• We will be filming around the streets of Burntwood in

the evening to give a feel of a dark dingy environment. • For the fighting scenes we will film at the back of ‘One

Stop’ and the ‘Co-op’ as you will be able to see the roads and the streets this will show British ideology.

• For the opening scene we will use a street in Burton-On-Trent as down each side there are terrace houses, this will give the feel of a tunnel effect to draw the audience in.

• Other locations are pending approval.

Page 11: Marked for Life

ScriptWe decided that our trailer should have as minimal dialogue as possible as we wanted to create an intense approach and thought that a lot of speech would ruin it. Having decided on a voice over at the start due to research into film trailers, we feel that it will be very useful to establish to the audience, what the film will entail, and have them questioning from the start.
