MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / 27-28 April 2011 / Roma
Main objectives of R&D activities over 3 years : Improvement of inter-sensor bias correction schemes Improvement of error co-variances used in SST analysis
schemes Improvement of SST climatologies SST analysis in Arctic Ocean Marginal Ice Zone Necessary R&D activities for SST TAC new products (OSTIA re-
analysis, higher resolution regional SST analyses)
Main issues : Little resources dedicated to R&D (low ratio imposed during the
proposal preparation) MyOcean R&D call : no possibility for funding R&D activities
outside the MyOcean Consortium
Reminder - Objectives for R&D
Marine Core Service
MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / 27-28 April 2011 / Roma
R&D : main achievements
Main achievements for the 2nd year : OSTIA re-analysis : final tuning of the OSTIA re-analysis chain before
extensive re-processing : improved sea ice masking of PATHFINDER AVHRR data, improved smoothness in time, bias correction of ATSR-1 data against in-situ observations (MetO)
HR and UHR SST analyses in Med Sea : development of an improved bias correction and data merging scheme, and validation of the new scheme over year 2008 (CNR)
Main difficulty : DMI/M-F proposal on inter-sensor bias correction to the first MyOcean
R&D call finally not endorsed by SAC
Remaining activities/objectives Improvement of SST climatologies : will be derived from OSTIA re-
analysis (MetO)
Marine Core Service
MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / 27-28 April 2011 / Roma
Main objectives over 3 years : From V0 to V1, main objectives are :
Operational consolidation of processing systems in place Interfacing with MyOcean system (Service Desk, MIS etc…) Implementation of KPIs for SST TAC production Definition and implementation of NRT quality control and
validation tools for SST TAC Implementation of the OSTIA re-analysis chain
From V1 to V2, products upgrades (higher resolution SST analyses over Baltic Sea and Arctic Ocean)
Main issue : too short time between the availability of specifications for V1 (T0
+ 5) and the V1 operational qualification (T0 + 18)
Reminder - Objectives for Dev. & Maintenance
Marine Core Service
MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / 27-28 April 2011 / Roma
Dev. & Maint. : main achievements
Main achievements for the 2nd year : Implementation, configuration and testing of the THREDDS server
and MIS gateway in SST TAC Dissemination Units (IFR, CNR and MetO)
Consolidation of operational production line for Arctic SST analysis (Met.no)
Development of new operational production line for global ODYSSEA SST analysis (IFR)
Main difficulties : Lack of progress of HR-DDS (NOCS) Lack of information for THREDDS server configuration and MIS
gateway installation Very tight schedule for V1 integration and testing
Remaining tasks : Upgrades for V2 (including evolution towards GDS V2)
Marine Core Service
MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / 27-28 April 2011 / Roma
Production architecture : SST TAC production distributed over 6 Production Units A 7th unit running a central quality monitoring and validation tool
(HR-DDS at NOCS) SST TAC products from 4 Production Units disseminated by IFR 2 other Dissemination Units : MetO (OSTIA, GMPE), CNR (Med
Sea and Black Sea products) Almost all production lines already in place (but at various
operational levels), key issue for V1 is their integration into the MyOcean system
Main issue : Not enough resources for extensive reprocessing of all SST TAC
products
Reminder - Objectives for Production
Marine Core Service
MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / 27-28 April 2011 / Roma
Production : main achievements
Main achievements for the 2nd year : All committed SST TAC near real-time products produced and
made available operationally for V1 Stream 1(except global ODYSSEA SST analysis)
All SST TAC Dissemination Units interfaced with the MyOcean system
Global OSTIA SST re-analysis (1985 – 2007) produced and made available (MetO)
Main difficulties : Start of global ODYSSEA SST analysis operational production
delayed (IFR) Remaining objectives :
Operational production of remaining committed products for V1 (global ODYSSEA SST analysis)
Improvement of incident/problem management in SST TAC
Marine Core Service
MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / 27-28 April 2011 / Roma
Main objectives over 3 years : Quality control of input satellite data sources (L2P) based on match-
up data bases (in-situ) made available in NRT by IFR and monitored continuously by M-F
First quality control step in NRT by each production unit for its products (L3/L4)
All SST TAC NRT products fed into the HR-DDS at NOCS, which can generate alarm messages to production units
Use of GMPE for quality control and validation of global SST analyses (MetO)
Main issue : Definition of common validation areas and metrics with the MFCs
Reminder - Objectives for Cal / Val
Marine Core Service
MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / 27-28 April 2011 / Roma
Cal/Val : main achievements
Main achievements for the 2nd year : Collection/production of match-up data bases for most of the input
L2P SST TAC products in a standardized format (IFR) Implementation of consistent products validation and quality
monitoring schemes in all SST Production Units
Main difficulties : Lack of progress of HR-DDS (NOCS)
Remaining tasks : Full exploitation of match-up data bases for continuous quality
monitoring of input L2P SST products (M-F)
Marine Core Service
MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / 27-28 April 2011 / Roma
Scientific Challenge :– Strong interaction needed to understand and define which is the
“best” satellite SST product for data assimilation in each MFC (we didn’t achieve this in MERSEA)
Technical Challenge :– Schedule for V1 getting more and more challenging (detailed
interface specifications between production/dissemination units and central sub-systems not yet frozen)
Operational Challenges :– Strong dependence on multiple input satellite data sources (SST
L2P producers)– Single point of failure : AATSR SST L2P products (currently no
satellite alternative for bias correction)
Main Challenges
Marine Core Service
MyOcean : Second Annual Meeting / 27-28 April 2011 / Roma
Scientific Challenges– None
Technical Challenges– None
Operational Challenges– Management of SST TAC transition from V1 to V2 (SST TAC
products format change), and of its impact on users
Ultimate Challenges– Having and keeping people with the right expertise in the right job
in the long term
Main Risks– Disappoint users
Future Challenges
Marine Core Service
