Europe showed strong growth in 2014 for all of bureau veritas’ traditional marine

businesses. in the netherlands, shipbuilding had a record year. in germany, economic pressures led to a flux in vessel ownership with bureau veritas gaining strongly. in belgium, we supported expansion into FSRus. in Scotland, our expertise as an independent verification body (ivb) was in strong demand. in France, both major owners and offshore operators were expanding in partnership with bureau veritas, and our strength in fast-growing lng meant there was high demand for our expertise.

new cruise ship orders from European owners to be built in European yards benefited our classification activity. in greece, shipowners entrusted bureau veritas with major existing fleets and a steady stream of newbuildings. underpinning this strong picture across Europe were an increase in local technical competence, investment in our local customer service centers and a hunger for stability and continuity from owners and offshore operators. These three forces combined to benefit both clients and bureau veritas.

across north asia, the leading shipyards had a busy year in 2014, with China moving increasingly into more

sophisticated sectors such as ultra large Container Ships (ulCSs) and lng. There was a continuing surge in bv class bulk carrier orders in China. in South asia, offshore demand was strong and ship management companies chose to move fleets to bv class. asian shipowners also brought prestigious projects to bv class. bureau veritas strengthened its presence in asia through the creation of two Technology Research Centers in Singapore and Shanghai. The two centers bring innovation, technical development and co-operation with asian institutes, designers and universities right to the heart of asia. a major new contract to deliver asset integrity management Services (aimS) for a large fleet of fixed offshore platforms in asia showed the demand for these services. 2015 will be a year of change. Some yards will move more into lng and complex specialized vessels, but for many yards, shipowners and offshore operators the focus will be on cost saving. bureau veritas’ strong asian networks will smooth and support that change at both ends of the spectrum.

MIDDlE EAST AND AFRICAThe key to both the middle East and african markets is to be able to deliver local

content. bureau veritas used its strong network and local experience across africa and the middle East to grow during 2014. in west africa, growth came in the offshore sector with major new projects incorporating significant local content. For 2015, the aim in africa is to play a strong role in helping mozambique develop its energy resources. political instability in parts of the middle East did not stop our clients from investing. bureau veritas’ local expertise and dense network mean it can provide targeted services for the large volumes of smaller but sophisticated vessels which are built and operated across the area. with the shadow of falling oil prices casting doubts over offshore developments, regional growth may slow during 2015, but we will be there, close to our clients, to deliver aimS and the other services they need to maintain a stable business despite the volatile oil price.

during 2014 bureau veritas increased its presence right across the americas.

in Canada, the marine survey team was rejuvenated and two contracts for newbuilding vessels with lng as fuel were entrusted to bureau veritas. in the uS, the Houston plan approval office was expanded to speed up response and provide the full range of class services. The extra capacity was required to meet growing demand from the uS shipbuilding industry, which recognizes bureau veritas’ expertise with the types of vessel built there. The ability of the Houston team to deliver aimS services to the offshore industry improved and the

acquisition of matthewsdaniel gave bureau veritas a strong new foothold in the uS rig market. in South america, there was a massive increase in demand for bureau veritas’ services for inland waterways, both for classing newbuildings and for helping develop local regulation as river traffic expands. brazil was, and will be, a powerhouse for offshore development, with bureau veritas’ technical expertise and strong local presence at its heart.

LEAN, CLEAN AND SAFEEverything that the marine & Offshore Operating group did in 2014 was drivenby two fundamentals. One was to advance technology, the other was to find better,faster ways to deliver that technology to clients.

bureauveritaspushedtheboundariesoftechnologyduring2014inultralargecontainerships(ulcss)structures,inlngtransportation,intheuseoflngasafuelandinelasticshaftalignment.atthesametime,itwasmakingleanmanagementareality.thatmeantdesignreviewandplanapprovalforlarger,cleanershipswasdeliveredmorequickly.

Fincantieri is one of the largest shipbuilding groups in the world and a leader in the construction of cruise ships. I have worked on several projects including, with bureau Veritas, on the small Ponant ships. At present we are working together on the Seven Seas Explorer. We work with a number of classification societies to the same criteria and I can say that we have noted a better overall benchmark with this last bureau Veritas project. We monitor the average time to get the full approval of each single document as well as respect of the schedule and we can state that with bureau Veritas, we have achieved the best performances to date.

LEAN MANAGEMENTThe project to roll out lean management across the Group continued in 2014 with a focus on plan approval. Complex projects were allocated a premium status and given dedicated resources, while other jobs were shared across the LPO network. Visible dashboards helped track work status and improve ownership. The result was a major improvement in client satisfaction, fewer errors and considerably reduced time for design review and plan approval. Tools to automate generation of 3D models worked with the management changes to reduce cycle time for design review.

SHALE PuSHES GAS CARRIER DEVELOPMENTShale gas is not just changing the shape of LNG trades: it is driving development of new containment systems that can cope with a variety of different gas cargoes. Increased ethane volumes moving from the uS to Europe are an example where flexible ships are needed. Containment system developers are responding and working with bureau Veritas on innovative solutions. These include membrane systems for multipurpose gas carriers, new type A tanks, type b and type C tanks with larger capacity. The market will create demand for large ethane and ethylene carriers which are also able to transport LNG or heavier liquefied gases like liquefied petroleum gas, and these will deploy the new containment system solutions. Propulsion is also changing as new types of gas carrier are required for the new markets. Engine manufacturers are developing ways to use different gases as fuel. Regulations and bV class rules are under development for ethane or propane burning engines.

Windstar operates a fleet of small luxury cruise ships known for their intimate yacht style experience and unique voyages to the world’s best small ports. We operate three luxury sailing yachts and an all-suite power yacht, and we have two more joining the fleet soon. First, they will have a major refurbishment in Italy. The Royal Malaysian Navy maintains a fleet of more than 50 vessels, suitable to fulfil its role to protect Malaysia’s maritime interests. Wisby Tankers are shipowners and ship managers and we have significant new construction activity. As part of that, I have to oversee the building of 50 tank barges in Croatia, three LPG barges in Croatia, seven tank barges in Argentina and complete the conversion of 22 tank barges in Colombia. I’m working with bureau Veritas on the Colombian tank barges: we chose them as class because it has the lead in the application of rules and regulations for inland navigation. bureau Veritas is a reliable partner with a high level of professionalism ranging from the individual local surveyor to the plan approval department and top management. Terntank is a family-owned shipping, chartering and ship management company based in northern Denmark. It specializes in the North European oil and chemical tanker trades. We are currently engaged in a newbuilding programme with bureau Veritas, which is designed to ensure our continuing viability and environmental compliance in the highly competitive and heavily regulated areas in which we operate. We have ordered four next-generation, state-of-the-art, 15,000 dwt LNG-driven tankers to be built to bV class at the Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding Co Ltd in China. bOW OPTIMIZATIONHydrOcean and bureau Veritas worked with CMA CGM to examine ways to optimize the bulbous bows of a series of 10 mid-size container ships. The existing design was optimized at only normal service speed and full load. using CFD calculations, 50 hull forms were evaluated for 17 different load conditions using 850 CFD computations with free surfaces. The resulting bow form chosen was expected to deliver fuel savings of 9.4% averaged over all load conditions. After conversion of the first ship to the new bulbous bow form, measurements showed fuel savings of 13 tonnes of fuel per day, giving a conversion payback time of only a few months. All 10 ships have now been converted to the new bow shape.

We began the certifying process right at the design stage and worked with bureau Veritas step by step: they verified from design through construction to commissioning and first oil. There is a growing market for multi-role vessels equipped with mobile diving spreads. bureau Veritas has responded to these trends by developing new rules for diving support vessels and diving systems, covering both integrated and non-permanent diving systems – including a diving support capable notation. Technip Flexi France is part of Technip, a world leader in project management, engineering and construction for the energy industry. We provide engineering, manufacturing, installation and retrieval of flexible pipe systems and advanced integrated solutions for deepwater developments. We are working to make our pipes lighter and to improve the fatigue life and corrosion strength. We work with Tecnitas on FEM simulation, building large numerical models that simulate the mechanical behaviour of our products. CNIM is a very innovative company working in many markets, of which energy is our most important. We have a strong maritime heritage so it is natural for us to focus on the developing market for offshore wind energy. We took a look at what functions are required for maintaining an offshore wind farm. Then we designed those functions into a vessel, which we call Windkeeper. It is the optimum vessel for wind farm maintenance and we are working with a French shipowner to order the first vessel this summer. bureau Veritas has provided us with design review and will class the vessel. but much more importantly, we have been able to work with bureau Veritas to develop a safe and appropriate rule framework for this emerging industry.

In2014,MatthewsdanielhadarevenuesplitofjustoverhalffromgloballossadjustingandtheremainderfromriskmanagementservicesoriginatingmostlyfromusandMexican-basedclients.during2015,Matthewsdaniel’smarinewarrantyexpertisewillseeexpansioningrowingareaswherebureauveritashasastrongoffshoremarketpresence,suchaswestafricaandsoutheastasia.

Noble owns and operates one of the most modern and technically advanced fleets in the offshore oil and gas drilling industry. Our work with MatthewsDaniel has primarily involved engineering and technical reviews and operational support in connection with rig movements and mobilizations, plus marine warranty support. The dry transport of two of our semi-submersibles took a year of planning and a lot of technical and operational support. MatthewsDaniel also supported us in our newbuilding programme and by providing location approvals for our jack-up fleet. We enjoy an excellent relationship built on teamwork and experience, perfect to meet the challenges posed by the oil and gas industry.
