RESEARCH INTERESTS Gene Regulatory Network Underlying Neural Crest Development– We study the signaling and
transcriptional interactions that lead to neural crest formation both at the tissue and the molecular level. We are applying gain- and loss-of-function approaches coupled with regulatory analysis and bioinformatics at a systems level to interrogate the molecular interactions that comprise a neural crest gene regulatory network.
Early Patterning of the Placodes - Identification and functional characterization of molecules
involved in formation and specification of the ectodermal placodes, with emphasis on induction, lineage decisions and morphogenesis.
Evolution of the Neural Crest and Placodes: The neural crest and ectodermal placodes are
uniquely vertebrate inventions. We are cloning orthologues of neural crest and placode “marker genes” from a basal vertebrate (lamprey) and non-vertebrate chordate (amphioxus) as well as isolating regulatory regions for these markers. We examine relationships in their regulatory machinery by comparative analysis of their enhancers and by performing cross-species promoter expression.
Neural Crest Cell Migration - A variety of cell labeling techniques, including DiI-labeling and
microsurgical grafts, are used to follow the pathways of neural crest migration in the vagal, trunk and hindbrain in a number of vertebrate species. We have examined the role of cell-cell and cell-substrate of both an attractive and inhibitory nature in neural crest migration.
