WHAT’S AN ‘OKINAQ: Ever wondered what that punctuation mark in the word Hawai‘i is?A: In the Hawaiian language, it’s called an ‘okina, which translated literally in English means separa-tor. Phonetically it its referred to as a glottal stop, similar to the sound that would be made in the English oh-oh. The ‘okina is actually a letter in the Hawaiian language and typed out looks like a backwards apostrophe. The practice of the UH Sports Media Relations office is to use the ‘okina in all Hawaiian words in which they occur.

WE ARE THE “WARRIORS”When referring to the UH football team, please use the nickname “Warriors.” Other UH teams go by the nickname “Rainbow Warriors” or “Rainbow Wahine” however, the football team prefers the nickname Warriors.

SPRING CAMP BEGINS MARCH 20: UH’s 15-practice spring camp begins Tuesday, March 20 and concludes with the “Warrior Bowl,” Friday, April 27 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field. All spring practices will be open to the public. The Warriors will take off the week of spring break (March 26-30) and resume Tuesday, April 3. Most practices will be held at the grass practice field.

HEADING BACK TO MAUI: For the fourth consecutive year, the team will conduct a spring practice on a neighbor island. The Warriors return to Maui for a practice/scrimmage at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, Saturday, April 21 at 11:00 a.m. UH last visited Maui in 2009 and have since travelled to Kaua‘i (2010) and Hilo, Hawai‘i (2011). Admission is free and the team will conduct an autograph session following the practice/scrimmage.

CHOW TIME: The 2012 season marks a new era in Warrior football as Honolulu-born Norm Chow begins his first year as head coach. Chow was introduced as the 22nd head coach at UH on Dec. 22, 2011. Chow is the first Asian-American head coach of a major college football program and he begins his first year as a head coach during his 39-year coaching career. Among his 36 years as a collegiate coach, Chow spent 27 years at Brigham Young, one year at North Carolina State, four years at USC, three years at UCLA, and one year at his alma mater, Utah. Chow also spent three years as offensive coordinator for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.

MAHALO WAC, ALOHA MWC: After 33 years as a member of the Western Athletic Conference, UH begins its first season in the Mountain West in 2012. The school joined the WAC in 1979 and compiled a 131-123-3 all-time record with four league titles.

SEASON PREVIEW...The Warriors return 14 starters (7 offense, 4 defense, 3 special teams) from last year’s squad

that finished 6-7.Among the offensive returnees are nearly the entire receiving corps, including receptions

leader Billy Ray Stutzmann (78 rec., 901 yds., 4 TDs). Also returning are part-time starters Jeremiah Ostrowski (65 rec., 687 yds, 5 TDs), Justin Clapp (38 rec., 356 yds., 4 TDs), and Trevor Davis (28 rec., 366 yds., 3 TDs).

Also returning on offense are running back Joey Iosefa (110 att., 548 yds, 7 TDs) and offen-sive linemen Dave Lefotu (7 starts at LG) and Levi Legay (11 starts at LT).

Quarterback David Graves, who started two games in place of an injured Bryant Moniz last season, also returns. The junior finished 63-of-110 for 768 yards and five touchdowns.

On defense, UH returns four starters, including linebacker Art Laurel (61 tkls, 14.0 TFL, 9 sacks), safety John Hardy-Tuliau (73 tkls, 11 PBU, 3 INT), defensive lineman Paipai Falemalu (50 tkls, 4.5 sacks), and cornerback Mike Edwards (43 tkls, 11 PBU).

UH also returns starting punter Alex Dunnachie (39.7 avg.) and part-time starter at place-kicker Tyler Hadden (5-10 FG, 18-21 PAT).

GENERAL TEAM NOTES

ALLSTAR WARRIORS: A total of six Warriors were selected to play in all-star games last sea-son. Defensive tackles Vaughn Meatoga and Kaniela Tuipulotu were selected to play in the 87th East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla. Wide receiver Royce Pollard, offensive lineman Brett Leonard and linebacker Aaron Brown competed in the Casino Del Sol Challenge All-Star Game which was held in Tucson, Ariz. In addition, defensive tackle Zach Masch played in the AstroTurf NFL Players Association Collegiate Bowl, held in Los Angeles, Calif.

WAC’S FINEST: UH was well-represented on the all-WAC football teams as voted upon by the WAC’s eight head coaches. Quarterback Bryant Moniz and linebacker Aaron Brown were named to the first team. In addition, wide receiver Royce Pollard, offensive lineman Brett Leonard, defensive linemen Kaniela Tuipulotu and Vaughn Meatoga, linebacker Corey Paredes, and safety Richard Torres were selected to the second team. Moniz missed the team’s final month of the season after suffering a leg injury in a loss to Nevada. Prior to the injury, he ranked among the nation’s leaders in passing and total offense and became just the third UH quarterback to surpass 10,000 yards passing. He joined Timmy Chang (2004) and Colt Brennan (2006 & 2007) as the only all-WAC first team honorees in school history. Brown recorded 103 total tackles, including 13.0 for loss and 4.5 sacks, and tied for the team-lead with three interceptions.

FANTASTIC FROSH: Punt returner Scott Harding was named to a pair of Freshman All-America teams. The Brisbane, Australia native was selected to the Football Writers Association

of American All-America first team and to Yahoo! Sports All-America second team. The 25-year-old true freshman fielded 19 punts for 141 yards, an average of 7.4 yards per return. He had a long of 24 yards against Utah State. In addition, Harding averaged 22.0 yards on 11 kickoff returns and had a long of 37 also against USU. The back-up slot receiver saw action in one game on offense, recording six catches for 67 yards in a win over UC Davis. Harding is the program’s first Freshman All-American since receivers Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullen and linebacker Solomon Elimimian were recognized following the 2005 season.

TOUGH LUCK: Four of UH’s seven losses last season were decided by eight points or less (8 at Washington; 1 at San Jose State; 4 vs. Utah State; 3 vs. Fresno State). In addition, UH was one of 12 teams nationally to lose at least four games by one score or less and one of 19 teams to have five games decided by eight points or less, of which UH had a 1-4 record.

DANDY DEBUT: Sophomore David Graves made his first career collegiate start at quarterback in UH’s 35-23 victory over Tulane last season. The Folsom, Calif., native completed 21-of-38 for 260 yards and two touchdowns while rushing eight times for 57 yards and another score. He left the game late in the third quarter with UH leading 28-14. A week earlier against Fresno State, he entered the game late in the second quarter and finished 13-of-27 for 199 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score. Graves finished the year with 768 yards passing on 62-of-110 and five touchdowns and a passing efficiency rating of 127.3. He also rushed 30 times for 154 yards and five scores.

NEW FACES: Entering the 2011 season, UH needed to replace three starters at receiver, all of whom are on current NFL rosters (Greg Salas-St. Louis; Kealoha Pilares-Carolina; and Rodney Bradley-Baltimore). With only Billy Ray Stutzmann starting every game last season, the receiv-ing corps saw six different players crack the starting lineup. Starters Allen Sampson and Justin Clapp went down with season-ending injuries. Sampson, started four games at “X” and had 18 catches for 186 yards and 2 TDs. Clapp made seven starts at “Y” and had 38 catches for 356 yards and 4 TDs.

TWO SPORT STAR: Slot receiver Jeremiah Ostrowski, the starting point guard on the men’s basketball team, was one of just seven Division I athletes who played both football and basketball during the 2011-12 season. The Honolulu, O‘ahu native finished third on the team with 65 receptions for 687 yards and five touchdowns. He missed three games due to injury.

PRESSURE UP FRONT: UH tied for 15th nationally with 35 sacks (for 250 yards) last season. Fifteen different players tallied sacks including Art Laurel’s team-leading nine. Defensive end Paipai Falemalu led the linemen with 4.5 sacks and 6.0 tackles for loss while tackle Vaughn Meatoga had 4.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. Earlier in the season, Falemalu had two sacks and three tackles for loss against Colorado in earning WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

SCORING IN ALL PHASES: The Warriors had three special teams touchdowns while John Hardy-Tuliau assisted in both scores. He had a blocked punt and recovery in the end zone at Nevada and his blocked punt against New Mexico State was recovered by Kamalani Alo for a touchdown. Tank Hopkins also had a fumble recovery off a botched LaTech kickoff return for a TD. In all, the Warriors recorded five blocked kicks last season – four by Hardy-Tuliau – the most since the team had five in 2004. In addition, UH’s three blocked punts were the most since the 1997 squad also blocked three. Hardy-Tuliau’s four blocked kicks were the most since Sean Butts’ had four in 2001.

KICK COVERAGE: Punter Alex Dunnachie helped UH lead the nation in fewest punt returns. His increase in hang time, allowed only four punt returns by UH’s opposition. UH has also did a favorable job on its kickoff coverage. The Warriors ranked sixth nationally, allowing its opponents an average of 18.03 yards per return. UH did not allow a kickoff return touchdown and only 14 returns of 25 yards or more in 69 opportunities.

AUSIE, AUSIE, AUSIE: Punter Alex Dunnachie and returner Scott Harding proudly repre-senting their home country. Dunnachie, a native of Heidelberg, completed his third season as the team’s starting punter while Harding, a 25-year old true freshman from Brisbane, made his American football debut after a six-year Australian Rules Football pro career. Dunnachie averaged 39.7 yards per punt with 18 inside the 20 and seven of 50-yards or more. Harding averaged 7.4 yards on 19 punt returns and saw his only action at slot against UC Davis with six catches for 67 yards.

Honolulu-born Nor-Chow returned home and was introduced as the 22nd head football

coach at the University of Hawai‘i on Dec. 22, 2011 before a full-house in the Diamond Head Hospitality Room at the Stan Sheriff Center. Chow, a Punahou School alum and Palolo Valley native, succeeds Greg McMackin, who retired after four seasons as head coach of the Warriors. Chow is the program’s 22nd head coach and fi rst Asian-American head coach of a major college football program. It is also Chow’s fi rst stint as a head coach. “I am extremely honored to receive the priv-ilege of leading the University of Hawai‘i football program; it is very humbling,” Chow said. “Th is is a program with great history, and I feel excited and energized about creating a program that will make all of the people of Hawai‘i feel pride for the university and our state. I am looking forward to coming home, to family and friends, and I am going to do my best to contribute to the rich history of Hawai‘i and its progress.” Chow has a long coaching resume, which includes 39 years of coaching experience col-legiately and in the National Football League. Among his 36 years as a collegiate coach, Chow spent 27 years at Brigham Young, one year at North Carolina State, four years at USC, three years at UCLA, and one year at his alma mater, Utah. Chow also spent three years as off ensive coordinator for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. A three-time national Assistant Coach of the Year, Chow has served as off ensive coordinator for three national championship teams (Brigham Young-1984; USC-2003 and 2004) and has tutored three Heisman Trophy winners (Ty Detmer-BYU, Carson Palmer-USC, and Matt Leinart-USC) and six NFL fi rst-round draft picks (Palmer, Leinart, Philip Rivers-N.C. State, Steve Young-BYU, Jim McMahon-BYU, Marc Wilson-BYU). Chow began his coaching career as head coach at Waialua High School on the North Shore of O‘ahu from 1970-72. He then began a 27-year stint at Brigham Young where he served in a variety of positions, including assistant head coach, off ensive coordinator, co-off ensive coor-dinator, quarterbacks coach, receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. Chow called the off ensive plays at BYU from 1982-1999. During his tenure at BYU, the Cougars posted a 244-91-3 record, appeared in 22 bowl

games, and coached 21 off ensive players who earned All-America honors. Brigham Young ranked in the nation’s top 10 in total off ense in 12 of Chow’s 18 years as off ensive coordinator. Chow then spent one year as off ensive coor-dinator at North Carolina State in 2000, where he coached NFL fi rst round pick Phillip Rivers to Freshman All-American honors, before mov-ing to USC, where he was part of two national championship teams in four seasons and coached Heisman Trophy winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. Palmer, the fi rst overall pick of the 2003 NFL Draft, left the school as the Pac-10’s career leader in passing yards and total off ense. Leinart was a two-time fi rst-team All-American who was also named the Walter Camp Player of the Year in 2004. After a successful stint at USC, Chow then took his talents to the NFL as the off ensive coor-dinator at Tennessee. In three seasons, he helped quarterback Vince Young earn NFL Rookie of the Year honors and became the fi rst rookie quarterback to play in the Pro Bowl. In his fi nal season, Chow helped the Titans win 10 games and earn a spot in the NFL Playoff s. Chow moved back to the collegiate ranks as off ensive coordinator at UCLA for three seasons before becoming off ensive coordinator at Utah at the start of this season. Chow, the recipient of the 2002 Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach, has coached eight of the top 14 NCAA career passing effi ciency leaders and 13 of the top 30 single-season passing yardage leaders. Chow has also received the National Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Foundation in 1999 and Athlon in 1993, and the NCAA Division I-A Off ensive Coordinator of the Year by American Football Monthly in 1996 and 2002. HONOLULU – Hawai’i started the 2011 season strong with a 34-17 win over new Pac-12 member Colorado in a nationally televised game at Aloha Stadium. Senior quarterback Bryant Moniz rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns, while the UH defense shutout the Buffaloes in the first half in helping the Warriors pick up a season-opening win over a BCS squad, while also avenging last year’s 31-13 loss to the Buffaloes in Boulder. UH led 17-0 at half and 24-7 midway through the third quarter, but needed to hold off a second-half rally by the Buffaloes, who cut the lead to one touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Moniz fittingly converted on a key fourth-down conversion on a 3-yard rush which helped extend a UH scoring drive. The drive was capped by a 22-yard shovel pass from Moniz to Joey Iosefa as the Warriors gained a two-touchdown cushion. The UH defense effectively sealed the win on the next possession when fresh-man linebacker Art Laurel intercepted Tyler Hansen’s fourth-down pass and returned it near the Buffalo goal line. The Warriors put pressure on Hansen for much of the game, finishing with seven sacks, including two by defensive end Paipai Falemalu. Moniz has made headlines with his arm, but on this night it was his legs that powered the UH offense. The senior quarterback scored on touchdown runs of 57 yards and 14 yards. Moniz, who had 220 yards of total offense in the first half with more than half (120) coming on the ground to help UH forge a 17-0 lead. Moniz’ 121 rushing yards were the most by a UH quarterback in 15 years. The Buffaloes rallied in the second half when Hansen hooked up with Paul Richardson for a pair of scoring strikes. A 34-yard field goal by Will Oliver early in the fourth quarter cut the Warrior lead to 24-17. However UH scored on its next posses-sion and the Warrior defense hunkered down the rest of the way. SEATTLE—Hawai‘i Warrior football team’s rally attempt fell short in a 40-32 loss to Washington Saturday afternoon at Husky Stadium. The Warriors dropped to 1-1 with its first loss of the year. Washington stormed out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead, but UH roared back to cut the deficit to under a touchdown twice in the fourth quarter. However, UH couldn’t get over the hump as the Huskies recovered UH’s onside kick attempt late in the game to seal the win. Washington quarterback Keith Price passed for 315 yards and four touchdown passes to lead the Huskies to their second win of the year. On the ground, Chris Polk added 107 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries. UH’s Bryant Moniz finished 31-of-45 for 333 yards, while passing for one touchdown and rushing for another. Royce Pollard hauled in eight passes for 128 yards and Jeremiah Ostrokwski caught 11 balls for 87 yards and one touchdown. Washington ended with a 466-388 advantage in total offense. UH was ultimately doomed by a slow start. Washington scored on each of their first three possessions, setting the tone with a 3-play 79-yard scoring drive to begin the game. It would be a sign of things to come as the Huskies racked up 281 yards in the first quarter alone to take a 21-0 lead. UH scored two touchdowns, including a 99-yard interception return by Richard Torres to get back in the game, however, UW regained momentum going into half-time scoring on a 31-yd Price touchdown pass with 44 seconds left to take a 28-14 lead into the locker room. LAS VEGAS – Hawai’i ran into a litany of misfortune in a 40-20 loss to UNLV at Sam Boyd Stadium. The Warriors dropped to 1-2 on the season with their second straight road loss. The Warriors got off to a slow start and could never get in a gear. UH gave up 17 unanswered points to start the game and coughed up the ball four times in the loss. Meanwhile, the Rebels (1-2), who suffered a pair of blowout losses on the road to start the season, could do little wrong in its home opener despite being a heavy underdog. Phillip Payne, who stung UH with a game-winning touchdown in Las Vegas two years ago, scored a pair of touchdowns, while Tim Cornett added two scores on the ground in the win. The Rebels out-gained the Warriors 365-290, while UH posted just six yards on the ground. UH quarterback Bryant Moniz completed 20-of-36 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors. Justin Clapp, who made his first career start in place of an injured Jeremiah Ostrowski, caught nine balls for two touchdowns, while fellow slot receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann racked up a career high 136 yards on nine receptions. Senior Aaron Brown led the UH defense with 12 tackles and 3.5 tackles-for-loss. The Rebels bolted out with 17 unanswered points, including an 80-yard run by Cornett on his first carry of the game late in the first quarter. Clapp finally got UH on the board with a 10-yard catch from Bryant Moniz with 6:11 left in the half. The sophomore’s first career touchdown as a Warrior cut the Rebel lead to 17-7, a score which would stand into the locker room.UH looked to start a comeback by getting the ball first in the second half, but instead the team went on a downward spiral. The team fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half and the Rebels cashed in right after with a Caleb Herring 31-yard pass to Payne. It was the first of three straight possessions in which the Warriors fumbled the ball away as UNLV eventually took a 27-7 lead and never looked back. HONOLULU – Hawai’i got off to a quick start and never looked back in a 56-14 rout of UC Davis Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Coming off of two deflating road losses, UH (2-2) regained its mojo right from the get-go against the FCS Aggies (1-3). The Warriors scored a touchdown on each of its seven first-half possessions—including a touchdown on its first offensive play from scrimmage—to cruise to victory in the first-ever meeting between the teams. Bryant Moniz had a hand on all of the UH touchdowns, tying an NCAA record with seven touchdown passes in a half, a feat shared with three others and last accom-plished 14 years ago. The senior also set a new school record with 424 first-half pass-ing yards, completing 30-of-40 passes, before sitting out the second half. Meanwhile, the defense was equally dominate, holding UC Davis to just one first down and 51 yards of offense in the first frame as the Warriors staked a 49-0 lead at the break. It marked the second straight home game that UH posted a first-half shutout. The Warrior defense set the tone early by forcing and recovering an Aggie fum-ble on the opening drive. The offense picked it up from there, as Moniz found Sterling Jackson for 25-yard touchdown on the very next play to get UH on the scoreboard just 67 seconds into the game. UH took a 28-0 lead after the first quarter and tacked on 21 more points in the second quarter. The Warriors put a punctuation mark on the half when Moniz found Pollard for an 8-yard score with 26 seconds left, tying the NCAA record-for touchdown passes and surpassing Colt Brennan’s first-half yardage record (416 vs. Northern Colorado, 2007).

RUSTON, La. – Hawai’i began its final season in the Western Athletic Conference with an emphatic 44-26 road win at Louisiana Tech Saturday at Joe Ailett Stadium. UH improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the WAC with its first road win of the year. La Tech (1-4, 0-1 WAC) scored the opening touchdown of each half, only to see a resilient UH squad respond with three unanswered scores each time. The Warriors, the defending WAC champions and the 2011 preseason favorite, won for the 11th time in its last 12 league games dating back to 2009. UH put together a solid all-around performance with all three phases getting into the scoring act. Bryan Moniz tossed four touchdown passes; Richard Torres returned an interception for a touchdown and Tank Hopkins scored on a fumble return following a botched kickoff return by the Bulldogs in the second half. Moniz finished 34-of-55 for 410 yards. It was the second straight game that Moniz threw for more than 400 yards and the fifth time in his career he surpassed the 400-yard mark. Royce Pollard recorded a career-high 10 receptions for 216 receiving yards and three touchdowns and became just the 11th Warrior to eclipse the 200-yard barrier in a game. Senior linebacker Aaron Brown led the UH defense with eight tackles, while sophomore safety John Hardy-Tuliau had six tackles, one interception and a blocked kick. SAN JOSE, Calif. – Hawaii (3-3, 1-1 WAC) dropped heartbreaker at San Jose State, 28-27 in a nationally televised game on ESPN. The Warriors took a 27-20 lead in the fourth quarter only to see the Spartans (3-4, 2-1 WAC) score the winning touchdown with 36 seconds left in the game. It was just the second loss in UH’s last 13 league games. It was a tale of two halves as the team’s combined for 12 turnovers. The Spartans took a 20-7 lead at the break on the back of six Warrior turnovers. UH turned the tables in the second half by forcing six Spartan turnovers en route to 20 unanswered points. A key play occured in the fourth quarter after Joey Iosefa scored on a 32-yad run to put the Warrirors up 27-20. However, the ensuing extra point was blocked and returned for a 2-point conversion to make it a 27-22 game. That play would come back to haunt UH as the Spartans took their final possesion 87 yards in just 48 seconds, capped by Chandler Jone’s 37-yard catch from Matt Faulkner, to give the Spartans a last-minute come-from-behind win. Bryant Moniz finsihed with 303 yards and two touchdowns, however the senior also threw a season-high three interceptions in the loss. Richard Torres led the UH defense with eight tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recov-ery.

HONOLULU – Hawai’i got back on the winning track with a 45-34 Homecoming win over New Mexico State. The Warriors improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. UH never trailed, scoring the first two touchdowns of the game and cruising to its 10th straight Homecoming win and 12th in the last 13 seasons. Bryant Moniz passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more to get UH back on the winning track after a disappointing road loss at San Jose State the week prior. The Warriors continued it domination of the Aggies (3-4, 1-2 WAC)—moving to a perfect 8-0 all-time and scoring 34 or more points in seven of the eight meetings. New Mexico State was able to stick around with big plays as three of its five touchdowns were plays of 40 yards or more. However, UH held a 27-14 halftime lead and scored the first touchdown of the third quarter to extinguish any Aggie comeback hopes. MOSCOW, Idaho – Hawai’i escaped with a hard-earned 16-14 road win over Idaho. Kenton Chun nailed a 35-yard field goal with just 32 seconds left to lift the Warriors to a crucial road conference victory. Chun’s field goal capped a dramatic final three minutes in which UH came back from the depths of defeat. Trailing 14-13 late in the fourth quarter, Aaron’ Brown’s clutch interception gave UH the ball back for one final possession. Quarterback Bryant Moniz then engineered a 60-yard drive to set-up the game-winning kick. The Vandals did have one final opportunity to win in the final moments but Trey Farquhar’s 53-yard field goal attempt as time expired was wide left. The Warriors (5-3, 3-1 WAC) kept their Western Athletic Conference hope title hopes alive with the victory. UH won despite scoring a season-low 16 points, the Warrior’s lowest point total in a win since a 13-10 victory at San Jose State in 2003. The UH defense picked up the slack by holding the Vandals (1-7, 0-4 WAC) to just 234 total yards. UH also stopped Idaho on two key fourth-down plays and forced two turnovers, including Brown’s fourth-quarter interception. Brown also finished with a team-high nine tackles. Bryant Moniz, meanwhile, finished with 338 yards passing and one touchdown, while Royce Pollard had 151 yards receiving on a career-high 10 receptions. Idaho got on the board first seven minutes into the game when Matt Cleveland recovered Prince McCarthy’s fumble in the end zone after a 4-yard gain. UH shook off its slow start to run off 13 unanswered points in the second quarter, including a career-long 47-yard kick by Tyler Hadden to give UH a 13-7 lead at the break. UH doubled up Idaho in yardage (214-102) in the first half. A pivotal play occurred in the third quarter when UH was driving in Idaho terri-tory to extend its lead. However, Tracy Carter scooped up a UH fumble and returned it 70 yards to give the Vandals a 14-13 lead. That lead held until the final tense moments of the game when UH rallied to defeat the Vandals for the seventh time in eight WAC meetings. HONOLULU – Hawai’i football suffered a crushing defeat as Utah State rallied for a 35-31 win over the Warriors. UH dropped to 5-4 overall and to 3-2 in the Western Athletic Conference with its first league home loss in more than two years. Robert Turbin’s 1-yard plulnge with 14 seconds left proved the game-winner as the Aggies (3-5, 1-2 WAC) overcame a 21-point second-half deficit. Turbin’s score capped a 12-play, 59-yard drive that ate up the majority of the final five minutes. UH saw a string of nine straight regular season home wins come to a close. UH’s last such loss was versus USC in the 2010 season opener. UH also had won seven straight WAC home games dating back to 2009. Meanwhile, the Aggies defeated the Warriors for just the second time in seven all-time WAC meetings. After scoring four unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter, UH took a commanding 28-7 lead into the locker room. But the Aggies, guided by backup quar-terback Adam Kennedy came to life in the second half. Utah State used big plays to get back in the game converting on a key fake punt while scoring on a Turbin 48-yard run and Kennedy passes of 37 and 71 yards. UH lost despite holding a 28-15 advantage in first downs. Senior quarterback Bryant Moniz accounted for all four of UH’s touchdowns. Moniz had touchdown runs of 1 and 8 yards, while tossing a pair of 18-yard touchdown passes to Justin Clapp and Jeremiah Ostrowski. Aaron Brown was again the star on defense for UH with three tackles-for-loss, an interception and a fumble recovery. RENO, Nev. – Hawai’i Warrior football team not only suffered a devastating loss to quarterback Bryant Moniz but ultimately a key Western Athletic Conference game to Nevada, 42-28, in a nationally televised game at Mackay Stadium. Moniz, the WAC preseason player of the year, went down with an ankle injury that is expected to be season-ending, late in the first quarter with the Warriors (5-5, 3-3 WAC) leading 3-0. Shane Austin finished the game and threw for 232 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Jeremiah Ostrowski ended up with a career-high 119 yards on eight catches. Nevada quarterback Cody Fajardo passed for 290 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 81 yards and another score in leading the Wolf Pack (6-3, 4-0) to their fifth straight victory. Two of those touchdown passes went to Rishard Matthews, who finished with eight catches for 118 yards. Holding a 35-28 lead late in the fourth quarter, the Wolf Pack put the game away with a fake field goal from Mason Magleby to Kolbe Aredse for a 14-point cush-ion. The loss of Moniz is the latest in a long list of injuries to the Warrior offense in recent weeks. Just last week, wide receiver Justin Clapp and left tackle Clayton Laurel suffered season-ending injuries while Royce Pollard missed Saturday’s game snapping a string of 23 consecutive starts.

HONOLULU – Hawai’i fell victim to yet another heartbreaker, falling to Fresno State, 24-21. The game marked the final Western Athletic Conference contest for UH who will join the Mountain West Conference beginning next year. Sophomore David Graves nearly rallied the Warriors (5-6, 3-4 WAC) to victory, completing 13-of-27 for 199 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another score. Graves entered the game with Hawai’i trailing 17-0 early in the second quarter. The Bulldogs (4-7, 3-3) offense was the story of the game, generating 488 yards of total offense including 176 yards and one touchdown by running back Robbie Rouse and 271 yards passing and two scores by quarterback Derek Carr. UH wide receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann tied a career-high with 136 yards receiv-ing on eight catches including a 69-yard catch-and-run for touchdown which gave UH its first lead at 21-17 midway through the third quarter. Fresno State took the lead for good to start the fourth quarter when Carr hooked up with Josh Harper on a throw which went through the hands of UH safety John Hardy-Tuliau. UH got the ball back with 2:18 left in the game and could only drive to the FS 35-yard line before time ran out. The loss was UH’s fourth this season decided by eight points or less, including the third setback which was decided in the game’s final minute of play. The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Carr to Jalen Saunders. Fresno State tacked on three more points on its next possession after a 32-yard Kevin Goessling field goal. After the Warriors turned the ball on downs in Fresno State territory, the Bulldogs marched downfield and scored on a 1-yd run by Rouse for a 17-0 lead. Graves entered the game on UH’s first possession of the second quarter. He led the Warriors to a score late in the quarter, running it in from three-yards out. On UH’s opening drive of the second half, Graves marched the Warriors downfield and found Royce Pollard for a 24-yard touchdown, pulling UH to within 17-14. HONOLULU – Hawai’i moved within one win of becoming bowl eligible follow-ing a 35-23 victory over Tulane, Saturday night in a non-conference game at Aloha Stadium. The Warriors (6-6) need to win their regular season finale against Brigham Young next week to earn an invitation to the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl. Freshman David Graves making his first career start, finished 21-of-38 for 260 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 57 yards and another score. He gave way to Shane Austin at the end of the third quarter and the senior completed 9-of-10 passes for 98 yards and led the Warriors to the game-sealing touchdown drive. Freshman wide receiver Trevor Davis was the recipient of both of Graves’ touch-down passes while running back Joey Iosefa rushed for 59 yards and two scores. Graves marched the Warriors downfield on the opening possession and found Davis for an 18-yard score. Graves completed all four passes during the drive and directed UH to an opening drive touchdown for just the second time all season. Midway through the first quarter, the Green Wave (2-11) tied the score at 7 with an 11-yard touchdown run by Albert Williams. But the Warrior moved ahead on a quarterback draw play, Graves scrambled 15 yards to put UH ahead 14-7. The Green Wave answered right back driving 68 yards on 13 plays, capped by a one-yard run by Orleans Darkwa, to tie the score. But Graves and the Warriors responded with a 12-play drive of their own, covering 74 yards and culminating with Iosefa’s first of two TDs. UH opened the second half with another touchdown drive. Graves accounted for all 66 yards, including a 29-yard scamper during the drive, which ended on Graves’ 12-yard pass to Davis. Tulane eventually cut the UH lead to 28-23 in the fourth quarter. But with Graves on the sideline, Austin took over the controls and marched the Warriors on a 10 play, 71–yard drive. Iosefa took a pitch by Austin at the 1-yard line on fourth down for the score. HONOLULU – Hawai‘i saw its postseason hopes dashed by old rival Brigham Young, 41-20, in the regular season finale which was televised nationally on ESPN2. Trailing 13-10 at the half, the Cougars (9-3) scored 34 unanswered points, including 28 in the third quarter, to put the game out of reach. The Warriors only managed 89 yards of total offense in the second half. With the loss, the Warriors (6-7) failed to reach the seven wins necessary to qualify for the hometown Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl. UH finished the season with a losing record for the second time in three seasons and for just the third time in the past 11 years. The game marked the first meeting between the old Western Athletic Conference rivals in nine years. Twenty-six UH seniors played their final home game and were honored during the traditional Senior Walk following the contest. Making his second consecutive start for the Warriors was sophomore quarter-back David Graves, who finished 13-of-23 for 186 yards and one touchdown. Senior Shane Austin replaced Graves late in the third quarter and completed 12-of-24 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. BYU quarterback Riley Nelson threw for a career-high 363 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to receiver Ross Apo. The other was a 38-yard one-handed catch by Cody Hoffman, after Nelson appeared to be sacked. Down 13-10 at the half, BYU took the second half kickoff and put together a nine-play, 72-yard drive capped by Nelson’s second touchdown pass to Apo on a 12-yard catch and run. On UH’s ensuing possession, running back Joey Iosefa fumbled and it was recovered by BYU’s Joe Sampson who returned it 26 yards for a touchdown and a 24-13 Cougar lead. After the Cougars forced a three-and-out by the Warriors, Nelson went to work again, converting a 40-yard pass to Marcus Matthews to the UH 1-yard one. Bryan Kariya scored on the next play giving BYU a 31-13 lead. In the second quarter, Graves found Trevor Davis on an inside screen and the freshman did the rest, covering 79 yards for the score. The reception was the longest play from scrimmage for the Warriors this season and gave UH a 13-7 lead.
