WHAT’S AN ‘OKINA?What’s that punctuation mark in the word Hawai’i? In the Hawaiian language, it’s called an ‘okina, which translates literally means separator. Phonetically it is referred to as a glottal stop, similar to the sound that would be made in the English oh-oh. The ‘okina is actually a letter in the Hawaiian language.

GENERAL TEAM NOTES

UH VS. TULANE SERIES: UH leads the series 2-1. The Green Wave won the last meeting, 36-28 during the inaugural Hawai‘i Bowl on Christmas Day 2002 in Honolulu. All three games in the series have been played at Aloha Stadium including the 1989 season opener and 1993 season finale. UH won both meetings 31-26 and 56-17, respectively.

UH VS. CONFERENCE USA: UH has a 34-24 all-time record against current members of Conference USA. The following is the break-down of UH’s record against each member of the conference: Houston (1-0), Rice (2-4), SMU (4-1), Southern Mississippi (0-1), Tulane (2-1), Tulsa (5-4), UAB (1-0), Central Florida (1-0), and UTEP (18-13). Hawai‘i has faced a Conference USA opponent in four previous Hawai‘i Bowls with a 2-2 record, including last year’s loss to Tulsa (62-35).

ALOHA WAC: UH closed out its 33rd and final season in the Western Athletic Conference, the longest streak of any current WAC member. UH finished with a 131-123-3 all-time record in league play dating back to 1979. UH will join the Mountain West Conference beginning in 2012.

TOUGH LUCK: Four of UH’s six losses this season have been decided by eight points or less (8 at Washington; 1 at San Jose State; 4 vs. Utah State; 3 vs. Fresno State). In addition, UH is one of 12 teams nationally to lose at least four games by one score or less and one of 19 teams to have five games decided by eight points or less, of which UH has a 1-4 record.

WOUNDED WARRIORS: The Warriors have lost five offensive starters for the remainder of the regular season due to injuries, including two offensive tackles, two receivers, and most recently, record-setting quarterback Bryant Moniz.

In 2000, Hawai‘i was 3-9 overall and tied for sixth in league play. In 2008, UH tied for second in the WAC standings and was 7-7 overall. This year, Hawai‘i will finish no higher than fourth in the final standings.

Nevada two weeks ago, will finish his career third all-time in school history in passing with 10,169 yards; total offense with 10,681 yards; and pass-ing touchdowns with 75, behind only UH all-time greats Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan in each of those categories.

NEW FACES: Entering this season, UH needed to replace three starters at receiver, all of whom are on current NFL rosters (Greg Salas-St. Louis; Kealoha Pilares-Carolina; and Rodney Bradley-Baltimore). With only Billy Ray Stutzmann start-ing every game this season, the receiving corps has seen six different players make the starting lineup. Starters Allen Sampson and Justin Clapp went down with season-ending injuries. Sampson, started four games at “X” and had 18 catches for 186 yards and 2 TDs. Clapp made seven starts at “Y” and had 38 catches for 356 yards and 4 TDs. Royce Pollard missed his first game of the season at Nevada two weeks ago, snapping a streak of 23 consecutive starts.

RECORDBREAKER: Bryant Moniz set a new school record and tied an NCAA record for touchdown passes in a half with seven in UH’s 56-14 rout of UC Davis. Only three other quarterbacks have accomplished that feat, most recently Doug Johnson of Florida (versus Central Michigan, 1997). Moniz, who finished 30-of-40 passing, also set a school record for yards passing (424) in a half, breaking Colt Brennan’s record of 416 set against Northern Colorado in the 2007 season opener.

FLEETFOOTED: Bryant Moniz had eight rushing touchdowns this season, which was the most by a UH quarterback since Colt Brennan scored eight times on the ground in 2007. Prior to Brennan, Glenn Freitas scored 12 rushing touchdowns in 1995. The school record for rushing TDs by a quarterback is 16 by Michael Carter in 1991. Earlier this season, Moniz rushed for a career-high 121 yards and three scores in UH’s season-opening win over Colorado. The 121 yards were the most rushing yards by a UH

quarterback since Freitas rushed for 122 yards and four touchdowns versus UTEP in 1995.

ALL IN THE FAMILY: Center London Sapolu, the eldest son of San Francisco 49er great Jesse Sapolu, has started the past five games at center. The senior, who wears the same jersey number (#61) his father once wore at UH and with the 49ers, made his first career start at San Jose State and essentially started the previous two games after starter Matagisila Lefiti left both games early with a knee injury. A JUCO transfer from Orange Coast College, Sapolu saw limited action last season.

BIG PLAYS: Through the first 11 games of the season, UH has produced 53 plays of 25-yards or more of which quarterback Bryant Moniz has been a part of 22 of those. Of those 53 plays, 11 resulted in touchdowns. On the flip side, UH surrendered 48 big plays of 25 or more yards, 14 of which resulted in touchdowns.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU?: Linebacker Aaron Brown is having quite a year defensively for the Warriors. The senior from Puyallup, Wash., ranks second on the team with 86 tackles, including 11.0 for loss. He also has two interceptions, one of which was a spectacular one-handed catch in a loss to Utah State, 3.5 sacks and three fumble recoveries. Playing the weakside backer position, Brown earned WAC player of the week honors after the Idaho game in which he had a game-high nine tackles, including an interception near the goal line late in the game that set up the game-winning field goal.

PRESSURE UP FRONT: UH is tied for 13th nationally with 32 sacks (for 232 yards) this sea-son. Fifteen different players have recorded at least one sack including Art Laurel’s team-leading nine. Defensive end Paipai Falemalu leads the linemen with 4.5 sacks and 6.0 tackles for loss while tackle Vaughn Meatoga has 4.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. Earlier this season, Falemalu had two sacks

GREG MCMACKIN4th SeasonOverall Record: 28-24WAC Record: 18-13

After short three seasons as head coach of the University of Hawai‘i football program, Greg McMackin has returned

the Warriors back to national prominence. During last season’s 10-4 campaign, UH was nationally ranked in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls, while leading the Warriors to a share of their fourth Western Athletic Conference title. UH also secured a berth to the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl in 2010, its second bowl appearance in three years under McMackin, while becoming just the sixth team in the school’s history to post double-digit wins. With 23 victories in three seasons, McMackin is tied with Bob Wagner for the most wins by a UH coach in his first three seasons during the school’s modern era. During McMackin’s illustrious coaching career, his teams have participated in 14 bowl games. McMackin served two stints as the Warriors’ defen-sive coordinator in 1999 and 2007, the latter of which UH improved from 93rd nationally in total defense to 34th. The Warriors captured the WAC Championship both years, including the perfect 12-0 regular season and trip to the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2007. Under his tute-lage, the UH defense ranked fifth nationally in tackles-for-loss, ninth in sacks, and 11th in interceptions, while recording five defensive touchdowns. In McMackin’s first stint, the Warriors finished 9-4, won the Jeep O‘ahu Bowl and became the NCAA’s all-time turnaround team after a winless 0-12 season the year prior. His defense, which improved from 109th to 35th nationally, accounted for five touchdowns, 17 interceptions, 33 sacks and 17 fumble recoveries. Prior to joining the Warrior staff during his second go-around, McMackin spent three years with the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers as associate head coach and linebackers coach under Dennis Erickson from 2003-05.

and three tackles for loss against Colorado in earn-ing WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

BALL HAWKS: One year after leading the nation in turnovers forced with 38 and tied a school single-season record with five defensive touchdowns, the Warriors are tied for 26th nationally this season with 22 turnovers gained and two defensive TDs. Both scores have come by safety Richard Torres off interceptions. His 99-yard “pick-six” tied a school-record in UH’s loss at Washington. He also had a 49-yard return for touchdown in a win at Louisiana Tech. With two touchdown returns, Torres is one off the school single-season and career records held by Quincy LeJay (1999) and Hyrum Peters (2002).

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

SCORING IN ALL PHASES: The Warriors have three special teams touchdowns this season. John Hardy-Tuliau, who has three blocked kicks this season, has helped UH score twice. He had a blocked punt and recovery in the end zone at Nevada and his blocked punt against New Mexico State was recovered by Kamalani Alo for a touchdown. Tank Hopkins also had a fumble recovery off a botched LaTech kickoff return for a touchdowndown.

BLOCKED KICKS: The Warriors have record-ed four blocked kicks this season – three by John Hardy-Tuliau – the most since the team had five in 2004. In addition, UH’s three blocked punts are the most since the 1997 squad also blocked three.

CLUTCH KICKERS: UH’s kickers, which were much criticized all season, came through in UH’s 16-14 at Idaho after Kenton Chun’s 35-yarder with 32 seconds left sailed through the uprights. Entering the game, UH had three field goals and three PATs blocked. Against the Vandals, Chun and Tyler Hadden made all three field goal attempts. The duo also each converted a field goal in UH’s loss at Nevada two weeks ago.

KICK COVERAGE: Punter Alex Dunnachie has helped UH lead the nation in fewest punt returns. His increase in hang time this season, has allowed only four punt returns by UH’s opposition. UH has also done a favorable job on its kickoff cover-age. The Warriors rank fifth nationally, allowing its opponents an average of 17.3 yards per return. UH has not allowed a kickoff return touchdown and only 12 returns of 25 yards or more in 61 opportunities.

AUSIE, AUSIE, AUSIE: Punter Alex Dunnachie and returner Scott Harding are proudly repre-senting their home country. Dunnachie, a native of Heidelberg, is in his third season as the team’s starting punter while Harding, a 25-year old true freshman from Brisbane, is making his American

football debut after a six-year Australian Rules Football pro career. Dunnachie is averaging 40.0 yards per punt with 14 inside the 20 and seven of 50-yards or more. Harding is averaging 7.4 yards on 19 punt returns and saw his only action at slot against UC Davis with six catches for 67 yards.

OTHER NOTES

WARRIORS IN THE NFL: A total of 13 former Warriors are currently in NFL camps this season, which ranks second among WAC schools behind Fresno State (31). Among the for-mer Warriors are Ikaika Alama-Francis (Miami), Davone Bess (Miami), John Estes (Jacksonville), Alex Green (Green Bay), Wayne Hunter (New York Jets), Travis LaBoy (San Diego), Reagan Maui‘a (Arizona), Mat McBriar (Dallas), Ryan Mouton (Tennessee), Kealoha Pilares (Carolina), Greg Salas (St. Louis), Samson Satele (Oakland), and Isaac Sopoaga (San Francisco). In addition, Rodney Bradley is on the Baltimore practice squad.

WALKON U.: UH’s walk-on program, moni-tored by associate head coach Rich Miano, has pro-duced many standout players for the Warriors over the years, namely 2007 Heisman Trophy final-ist and record-setting quarterback Colt Brennan. Miano was a walk-on himself who later spent 11 seasons in the NFL. Former walk-ons currently on NFL rosters include defensive end Ikaika Alama-Francis (Miami), linebacker Travis LaBoy (San Diego), fullback and punter Mat McBriar (Dallas). Prominent walk-ons on this year’s squad include the team’s four captains – quarterback Bryant Moniz, wide receiver Royce Pollard, linebacker Corey Paredes, and safety Richard Torres.

WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE: The Warriors have won their last seven regular season home games dating back to last season. The 2011 season marks Aloha Stadium’s 36th anniversary as home to the Warrior football team. The stadium opened Sept. 12, 1975 and UH boasts an all-time mark of 179-114-4 for a 60.9 winning percentage in the Halawa venue. The Warriors are 3-2 at Aloha Stadium this season.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: UH’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 959 not only is the WAC’s highest but it ranks among nation’s best and schools in the Western United States. Below is a breakdown of the top APR scores among western schools in the Pac-12, WAC, and Mountain West Conferences:

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai‘i won the pre-game entertainment contest with a savvy haka dance, but fell short against the Green Wave that tore into Honolulu to defeat the Warriors, 36-28, in the ConAgra Foods Hawai‘i Bowl at Aloha Stadium. Tulane (8-5) gained 429 total yards and sacked Warrior quarterbacks eight times to win the programs fourth bowl game. But it was the Tulane special teams that sparked a 30-point second half to overcome a 14-6 halftime deficit. Hawai‘i (10-4) took its first drive of the game 64-yards on seven plays capped by a one-yard run by Thero Mitchell to take a 7-0 lead and struck again when senior reserve running back Josh Galeai ran around the left side for a two-yard touchdown to put the Warriors up, 14-0. The Green Wave settled for two field goals, 22- and 37-yards respectively by Seth Marler to get on the board before the end of the first half. Tulane came out of the locker room like a team on a mission behind big returns by Lynaris Elpheage who cut the lead to two with a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown early in the third quarter. Elpheage set-up Tulane’s go-ahead score with a 56-yard punt return. Six plays later, Tulane quarterback J.P. Losman took it in from one yard out to give Tulane its first lead of the game, 20-14, with 6:17 left in the third quarter. Tulane added to the lead after Withy-Allen fumbled in UH territory. One play later, Mewelde Moore rumbled 25 yards for a touchdown and Tulane had a 26-14 lead. Hawai‘i got the ball back just before the end of the third quarter after blocking a field goal attempt and turned into a touchdown. Withy-Allen, facing fourth-and-one, tossed a 57-yard strike to Justin Colbert who turned and dashed untouched to the “house” to bring the Warriors within five at 26-21. Tulane answered with a 10-play, 80-yard drive that took 4:32 off the fourth quarter clock. Withy-Allen hit Colbert on a crossing pattern for a 31-yard score to put the Warriors within reach, but a safety by the Green Wave ended all hopes of a second bowl victory for Warrior Head Coach June Jones. Colbert caught nine passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns in his last game as a Warrior. Withy-Allen completed 18-of-31 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. HONOLULU – Hawai’i started the 2011 season strong with a 34-17 win over new Pac-12 member Colorado in a nationally televised game at Aloha Stadium. Senior quarterback Bryant Moniz rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns, while the UH defense shutout the Buffaloes in the first half in helping the Warriors pick up a season-opening win over a BCS squad, while also avenging last year’s 31-13 loss to the Buffaloes in Boulder. UH led 17-0 at half and 24-7 midway through the third quarter, but needed to hold off a second-half rally by the Buffaloes, who cut the lead to one touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Moniz fittingly converted on a key fourth-down conversion on a 3-yard rush which helped extend a UH scoring drive. The drive was capped by a 22-yard shovel pass from Moniz to Joey Iosefa as the Warriors gained a two-touchdown cushion. The UH defense effectively sealed the win on the next possession when fresh-man linebacker Art Laurel intercepted Tyler Hansen’s fourth-down pass and returned it near the Buffalo goal line. The Warriors put pressure on Hansen for much of the game, finishing with seven sacks, including two by defensive end Paipai Falemalu. Moniz has made headlines with his arm, but on this night it was his legs that powered the UH offense. The senior quarterback scored on touchdown runs of 57 yards and 14 yards. Moniz, who had 220 yards of total offense in the first half with more than half (120) coming on the ground to help UH forge a 17-0 lead. Moniz’ 121 rushing yards were the most by a UH quarterback in 15 years. The Buffaloes rallied in the second half when Hansen hooked up with Paul Richardson for a pair of scoring strikes. A 34-yard field goal by Will Oliver early in the fourth quarter cut the Warrior lead to 24-17. However UH scored on its next posses-sion and the Warrior defense hunkered down the rest of the way. SEATTLE—Hawai‘i Warrior football team’s rally attempt fell short in a 40-32 loss to Washington Saturday afternoon at Husky Stadium. The Warriors dropped to 1-1 with its first loss of the year. Washington stormed out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead, but UH roared back to cut the deficit to under a touchdown twice in the fourth quarter. However, UH couldn’t get over the hump as the Huskies recovered UH’s onside kick attempt late in the game to seal the win. Washington quarterback Keith Price passed for 315 yards and four touchdown passes to lead the Huskies to their second win of the year. On the ground, Chris Polk added 107 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries. UH’s Bryant Moniz finished 31-of-45 for 333 yards, while passing for one touchdown and rushing for another. Royce Pollard hauled in eight passes for 128 yards and Jeremiah Ostrokwski caught 11 balls for 87 yards and one touchdown. Washington ended with a 466-388 advantage in total offense. UH was ultimately doomed by a slow start. Washington scored on each of their first three possessions, setting the tone with a 3-play 79-yard scoring drive to begin the game. It would be a sign of things to come as the Huskies racked up 281 yards in the first quarter alone to take a 21-0 lead. UH scored two touchdowns, including a 99-yard interception return by Richard Torres to get back in the game, however, UW regained momentum going into half-time scoring on a 31-yd Price touchdown pass with 44 seconds left to take a 28-14 lead into the locker room. UH cut the UW lead to 31-26 at the beginning of the fourth quarter and 38-32 with less than two minutes left, but would get no closer as Washington sealed the win by recovering a UH onside kick in the waning moments. LAS VEGAS – Hawai’i ran into a litany of misfortune in a 40-20 loss to UNLV at Sam Boyd Stadium. The Warriors dropped to 1-2 on the season with their second straight road loss. The Warriors got off to a slow start and could never get in a gear. UH gave up 17 unanswered points to start the game and coughed up the ball four times in the loss. Meanwhile, the Rebels (1-2), who suffered a pair of blowout losses on the road to start the season, could do little wrong in its home opener despite being a heavy underdog. Phillip Payne, who stung UH with a game-winning touchdown in Las Vegas two years ago, scored a pair of touchdowns, while Tim Cornett added two scores on the ground in the win. The Rebels out-gained the Warriors 365-290, while UH posted just six yards on the ground. UH quarterback Bryant Moniz completed 20-of-36 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors. Justin Clapp, who made his first career start in place of an injured Jeremiah Ostrowski, caught nine balls for two touchdowns, while fellow slot receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann racked up a career high 136 yards on nine receptions. Senior Aaron Brown led the UH defense with 12 tackles and 3.5 tackles-for-loss. The Rebels bolted out with 17 unanswered points, including an 80-yard run by Cornett on his first carry of the game late in the first quarter. Clapp finally got UH on the board with a 10-yard catch from Bryant Moniz with 6:11 left in the half. The sophomore’s first career touchdown as a Warrior cut the Rebel lead to 17-7, a score which would stand into the locker room.UH looked to start a comeback by getting the ball first in the second half, but instead the team went on a downward spiral. The team fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half and the Rebels cashed in right after with a Caleb Herring 31-yard pass to Payne. It was the first of three straight possessions in which the Warriors fumbled the ball away as UNLV eventually took a 27-7 lead and never looked back. HONOLULU – Hawai’i got off to a quick start and never looked back in a 56-14 rout of UC Davis Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Coming off of two deflating road losses, UH (2-2) regained its mojo right from the get-go against the FCS Aggies (1-3). The Warriors scored a touchdown on each of its seven first-half possessions—including a touchdown on its first offensive play from scrimmage—to cruise to victory in the first-ever meeting between the teams. Bryant Moniz had a hand on all of the UH touchdowns, tying an NCAA record with seven touchdown passes in a half, a feat shared with three others and last accom-plished 14 years ago. The senior also set a new school record with 424 first-half pass-ing yards, completing 30-of-40 passes, before sitting out the second half. Meanwhile, the defense was equally dominate, holding UC Davis to just one first down and 51 yards of offense in the first frame as the Warriors staked a 49-0 lead at the break. It marked the second straight home game that UH posted a first-half shutout. The Warrior defense set the tone early by forcing and recovering an Aggie fum-ble on the opening drive. The offense picked it up from there, as Moniz found Sterling Jackson for 25-yard touchdown on the very next play to get UH on the scoreboard just 67 seconds into the game. UH took a 28-0 lead after the first quarter and tacked on 21 more points in the second quarter. The Warriors put a punctuation mark on the half when Moniz found Pollard for an 8-yard score with 26 seconds left, tying the NCAA record-for touchdown passes and surpassing Colt Brennan’s first-half yardage record (416 vs. Northern Colorado, 2007).

RUSTON, La. – Hawai’i began its final season in the Western Athletic Conference with an emphatic 44-26 road win at Louisiana Tech Saturday at Joe Ailett Stadium. UH improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the WAC with its first road win of the year. La Tech (1-4, 0-1 WAC) scored the opening touchdown of each half, only to see a resilient UH squad respond with three unanswered scores each time. The Warriors, the defending WAC champions and the 2011 preseason favorite, won for the 11th time in its last 12 league games dating back to 2009. UH put together a solid all-around performance with all three phases getting into the scoring act. Bryan Moniz tossed four touchdown passes; Richard Torres returned an interception for a touchdown and Tank Hopkins scored on a fumble return following a botched kickoff return by the Bulldogs in the second half. Moniz finished 34-of-55 for 410 yards. It was the second straight game that Moniz threw for more than 400 yards and the fifth time in his career he surpassed the 400-yard mark. Royce Pollard recorded a career-high 10 receptions for 216 receiving yards and three touchdowns and became just the 11th Warrior to eclipse the 200-yard barrier in a game. Senior linebacker Aaron Brown led the UH defense with eight tackles, while sophomore safety John Hardy-Tuliau had six tackles, one interception and a blocked kick. SAN JOSE, Calif. – Hawaii (3-3, 1-1 WAC) dropped heartbreaker at San Jose State, 28-27 in a nationally televised game on ESPN. The Warriors took a 27-20 lead in the fourth quarter only to see the Spartans (3-4, 2-1 WAC) score the winning touchdown with 36 seconds left in the game. It was just the second loss in UH’s last 13 league games. It was a tale of two halves as the team’s combined for 12 turnovers. The Spartans took a 20-7 lead at the break on the back of six Warrior turnovers. UH turned the tables in the second half by forcing six Spartan turnovers en route to 20 unanswered points. A key play occured in the fourth quarter after Joey Iosefa scored on a 32-yad run to put the Warrirors up 27-20. However, the ensuing extra point was blocked and returned for a 2-point conversion to make it a 27-22 game. That play would come back to haunt UH as the Spartans took their final possesion 87 yards in just 48 seconds, capped by Chandler Jone’s 37-yard catch from Matt Faulkner, to give the Spartans a last-minute come-from-behind win. Bryant Moniz finsihed with 303 yards and two touchdowns, however the senior also threw a season-high three interceptions in the loss. HONOLULU – Hawai’i got back on the winning track with a 45-34 Homecoming win over New Mexico State. The Warriors improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. UH never trailed, scoring the first two touchdowns of the game and cruising to its 10th straight Homecoming win and 12th in the last 13 seasons. Bryant Moniz passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more to get UH back on the winning track after a disappointing road loss at San Jose State the week prior. The Warriors continued it domination of the Aggies (3-4, 1-2 WAC)—moving to a perfect 8-0 all-time and scoring 34 or more points in seven of the eight meetings. New Mexico State was able to stick around with big plays as three of its five touchdowns were plays of 40 yards or more. However, UH held a 27-14 halftime lead and scored the first touchdown of the third quarter to extinguish any Aggie comeback hopes. UH has now won its last nine regular season home games dating back to last season and won for the 12th time in its last 14 conference games. Moinz finished with 326 yards of total offense – 264 passing and 62 yards rush-ing. The senior connected with Justin Clapp on a 24-yard strike and Allen Sampson on a 25-yard strike, while rushing for scores of 17 and 19 yards. The Warrior offense racked up a season-high 227 yards on the ground, including 90 yards and two touchdowns by Joey Iosefa and a career-high 75 yards by Sterling Jackson. Meanwhile, UH’s special teams also came up with a huge play with the pro-gram’s first blocked punt for a touchdown in 10 years. John Hardy-Tuliau blocked an NMSU punt and Kamalani Alo returned it 13 yards to help give UH a 14-0 first-quarter lead. MOSCOW, Idaho – Hawai’i escaped with a hard-earned 16-14 road win over Idaho. Kenton Chun nailed a 35-yard field goal with just 32 seconds left to lift the Warriors to a crucial road conference victory. Chun’s field goal capped a dramatic final three minutes in which UH came back from the depths of defeat. Trailing 14-13 late in the fourth quarter, Aaron’ Brown’s clutch interception gave UH the ball back for one final possession. Quarterback Bryant Moniz then engineered a 60-yard drive to set-up the game-winning kick. The Vandals did have one final opportunity to win in the final moments but Trey Farquhar’s 53-yard field goal attempt as time expired was wide left. The Warriors (5-3, 3-1 WAC) kept their Western Athletic Conference hope title hopes alive with the victory. UH won despite scoring a season-low 16 points, the Warrior’s lowest point total in a win since a 13-10 victory at San Jose State in 2003. The UH defense picked up the slack by holding the Vandals (1-7, 0-4 WAC) to just 234 total yards. UH also stopped Idaho on two key fourth-down plays and forced two turnovers, including Brown’s fourth-quarter interception. Brown also finished with a team-high nine tackles. Bryant Moniz, meanwhile, finished with 338 yards passing and one touchdown, while Royce Pollard had 151 yards receiving on a career-high 10 receptions. Idaho got on the board first seven minutes into the game when Matt Cleveland recovered Prince McCarthy’s fumble in the end zone after a 4-yard gain. UH shook off its slow start to run off 13 unanswered points in the second quarter, including a career-long 47-yard kick by Tyler Hadden to give UH a 13-7 lead at the break. UH doubled up Idaho in yardage (214-102) in the first half. A pivotal play occurred in the third quarter when UH was driving in Idaho terri-tory to extend its lead. However, Tracy Carter scooped up a UH fumble and returned it 70 yards to give the Vandals a 14-13 lead. HONOLULU – Hawai’i football suffered a crushing defeat as Utah State rallied for a 35-31 win over the Warriors. UH dropped to 5-4 overall and to 3-2 in the Western Athletic Conference with its first league home loss in more than two years. Robert Turbin’s 1-yard plulnge with 14 seconds left proved the game-winner as the Aggies (3-5, 1-2 WAC) overcame a 21-point second-half deficit. Turbin’s score capped a 12-play, 59-yard drive that ate up the majority of the final five minutes. UH saw a string of nine straight regular season home wins come to a close. UH’s last such loss was versus USC in the 2010 season opener. UH also had won seven straight WAC home games dating back to 2009. Meanwhile, the Aggies defeated the Warriors for just the second time in seven all-time WAC meetings. After scoring four unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter, UH took a commanding 28-7 lead into the locker room. But the Aggies, guided by backup quar-terback Adam Kennedy came to life in the second half. Utah State used big plays to get back in the game converting on a key fake punt while scoring on a Turbin 48-yard run and Kennedy passes of 37 and 71 yards. UH lost despite holding a 28-15 advantage in first downs. Senior quarterback Bryant Moniz accounted for all four of UH’s touchdowns. Moniz had touchdown runs of 1 and 8 yards, while tossing a pair of 18-yard touchdown passes to Justin Clapp and Jeremiah Ostrowski. Aaron Brown was again the star on defense for UH with three tackles-for-loss, an interception and a fumble recovery. HONOLULU – Hawai’i fell victim to yet another heartbreaker, falling to Fresno State, 24-21. The game marked the final Western Athletic Conference contest for UH who will join the Mountain West Conference beginning next year. Sophomore David Graves nearly rallied the Warriors (5-6, 3-4 WAC) to victory, completing 13-of-27 for 199 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another score. Graves entered the game with Hawai’i trailing 17-0 early in the second quarter. The Bulldogs (4-7, 3-3) offense was the story of the game, generating 488 yards of total offense including 176 yards and one touchdown by running back Robbie Rouse and 271 yards passing and two scores by quarterback Derek Carr. UH wide receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann tied a career-high with 136 yards receiv-ing on eight catches including a 69-yard catch-and-run for touchdown which gave UH its first lead at 21-17 midway through the third quarter. Fresno State took the lead for good to start the fourth quarter when Carr hooked up with Josh Harper on a throw which went through the hands of UH safety John Hardy-Tuliau. UH got the ball back with 2:18 left in the game and could only drive to the FS 35-yard line before time ran out. The loss was UH’s fourth this season decided by eight points or less, including the third setback which was decided in the game’s final minute of play. The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Carr to Jalen Saunders. Fresno State tacked on three more points on its next possession after a 32-yard Kevin Goessling field goal. After the Warriors turned the ball on downs in Fresno State territory, the Bulldogs marched downfield and scored on a 1-yd run by Rouse for a 17-0 lead. Graves entered the game on UH’s first possession of the second quarter. He led the Warriors to a score late in the quarter, running it in from three-yards out. On UH’s opening drive of the second half, Graves marched the Warriors downfield and found Royce Pollard for a 24-yard touchdown, pulling UH to within 17-14. After a Fresno State punt, Graves led UH to another score, connecting with Stutzmann for the longest pass play of the season for Hawai’i.
