A special THANK YOU to everyone at Hambden for their part in our successful OSOB adventure.   HPTO, the Committee, the teachers, students, and families, all work together to make One School, One Book the success that it is.   We are all eagerly anticipating what comes next!   Thank You!

A ?Thank You? to You

As One Dog and his Boy becomes a pleasant memory, we can draw gratif ication in the fact that the entire month of reading was a complete success.   Students? excited participation in the daily trivia   questions was a true testament to their knowledge of the on-going saga.   Having so many entries in the contests was a complete and wonderful surprise, which, of course, made it more dif f icult for our judges.   Students and staff alike continue to enjoy standing in front of the bulletin boards looking at the pictures and postcards. Hambden students are awesome!

Our staff is so dedicated to this venture. Year after year, they will ingly decorate their doors for the event. Having so many staff members (and not just teachers) make a podcast for you to hear is really extraordinary.   Every morning students guess who the reader was.   Our teachers will ingly (I think!) accept our projects,   which allow our students, among other things, to wear and earn charms and   make sil ly dogs for our walls.   The Hambden staff is extraordinary,   and the OSOB committee is grateful for their support.

Hambden PTO is awesome in their complete and unwavering support of this annual project. We receive a healthy budget, which allows us to fully explore various aspects of the book and have prizes to ref lect the interest our students demonstrate.   But money doesn?t grow on trees.   Thanks to all of you that support the many PTO fundraisers.   Without you, there would be no PTO or budget.     So a very sincere ?Thank You? to you all.

The OSOB committee this year included Mrs. Diehl, Mrs. Dinko, Mrs. Donahue, Mr. Aurand, Mr. Prezioso, Mrs. Seabeck, Mrs. Turk, Mr. Reiter, Mrs. Metz and me. I get a lot of the credit, but if I take any of it, it is due to the fact that I work with really dependable, clever, smart, creative people.   They need no micromanaging.   If they say they?ll do it, they do it.   I can?t take credit for that.   So I thank a great committee for a memorable month.   And you can thank them, too.

But the true definit ion of our OSOB being a success is our family participation. Reading nightly with your child has lifelong ramif ications - all good.     It has been said that ?the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.? (Anderson, Hiebert, Scott, Wilkinson, Becoming a Nation of Readers, The Report of the Commission on Reading, 1985) This year?s book was more dif f icult for younger readers, and reading daily with your child was an important part of their understanding.   And besides, wasn?t it nice to cuddle on the couch together and read the book, or l isten to the podcast?   They will appreciate it, if not today, then someday.   They may even thank you for it.

As one teacher mentioned to me, her students may not remember a particular math lesson, but they will for sure remember their experience with a Cricket in Times Square, Charlie and Willy Wonka, James and the Giant Peach, and Hal, Pippa and the dogs. Hambden is special that way - we make memories that last!
