There aren’t many teams that can boast of still having 60 kids competing at this time of the year, however, that is the case for the Glasgow Wrestling Club Highlanders. 29 youngsters traveled to Denver for the prestigious Rocky Mountain National tournament — one of THE largest out-of-state teams attending — and the
Highlanders had 13 of these 29 placing, including Cooper Larson bringing home the championship. The remainder of the Highlanders competed in Wolf Point where 30 Glasgow grapplers placed including nine individual champions and a trio of quick pin awards. Simply put, it was another super successful weekend for the Highlanders.
This weekend wraps up the folkstyle season in Billings at the Montana Open where over 1,500 wrestlers are expected to compete. Looking ahead, it might be time to start thinking about attending the Zadick Bros. Wrestling Camp which will be held in Great Falls June 13-18. A technique camp for ages 5-10 will be held June 15-17. Check it out at MIKEZADICK.COM.

TUESDAY
How did Eugene’s Pizza fare? Aaron Flint has been having some fun with the Montana Mint’s Pizza Bracket on his statewide radio show, Voices of Montana, and had Rocky Erickson announce the Sweet 16 winners on this morning’s program. Just like the Men’s NCAA Tournament, upsets were plentiful, including three #13-seeded pizza pies advancing, as well as a #15 seed, the Pit Stop in Lincoln. #3-seeded Eugene’s Pizza of Glasgow actually recorded the biggest blowout of the bracket thus far, knocking out #14 Powder Keg of Fairview in the Pepperoni Division. Top-seeded Howards Pizza (Sausage Division) from Great Falls received the most votes thus far with 900. Could Eugene’s and Howards meet in the Final Four? Could happen. The Pondy (11th-seeded Ponderosa out of Scobey, also in the Sausage Division) knocked off the Pit Stop of of Ennis. Eugene’s got quite a plug this morning as both Aaron and Rocky agreed that Eugene’s makes the best pizza in the state and beyond.
A low pressure system will spread scattered rain across the area this afternoon and evening. Precipitation will transition to a wintry mix near the Canadian border tonight and Tuesday morning, where a little over an inch of snow will be possible. The wet snow in the north, possibly mixed with a little sleet and freezing rain, could cause difficult travel conditions from Highway 24 and points east on Tuesday morning.

Proposed emergency closureSheep Die-Off Prompts Conference Call to Close Hunting District Montana’s Fish & Wildlife Commission met via a telephone conference call this morning to consider an emergency closure of a bighorn sheep hunting district near Gardiner due to a recent disease-related die-off. Commissioners are considering closing bighorn sheep hunting district 305, near Gardiner, which suffered a pneumonia die-off that began late last year. At least 30 percent of the herd, and 40 percent or more of the mature rams, have died. This winter, FWP documented a loss of a minimum of 30 sheep found mostly in the Gardiner and Cinnabar areas. In response, officials are seeking to close the 2015 bighorn sheep season in hunting district 305 this year and preclude hunters from applying for permits in the hunting district. Barring another disease outbreak, or other unforeseen events, hunting district 305 would reopen to hunting when the population recovers. For the upcoming season, officials offered one legal ram permit in the district. Should the season there be closed, anyone who already applied for hunting district 305’s permit will be offered the opportunity to apply elsewhere or be given a refund. Last year about 100 hunters applied for the district’s lone permit. The deadline to apply for moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat and bison permits is May 1.
