    ARLINGTON, Texas - After a

    year filled with major victories,

    Team USA's Kelly Kulick has

    been named the 2010 World

    Bowling Writers Women's

    Bowler of the Year.

    The seven-time Team USA

    member became the first

    woman to win a Lumber

    Liquidators Professional

    Bowlers Association Tour title

    last January. She defeated

    Chris Barnes, 265-190, to win

    the Tournament of Champions.

"I'm thrilled by all the acco-

    lades I've received for last

    year's performances, and to be

named the best bowler in the

world is a tremendous accom-plishment," Kulick said. "It's like 2010 hasn't ended yet

for me. I'm constantly reminded of what I accom-

    plished."

Kulick also won both women's bowling majors in

2010. She claimed the United States Bowling Congress

Queens title in April and the U.S. Women's Open in

May. She was the first woman to win both events in the

    same year.

In her only Team USA event

    in 2010, Kulick earned gold

medals in doubles and team, a

    silver medal in all-events and

    bronze medals in singles and

    trios at the Pan American

    Bowling Confederation Women's

    Championships.

    Earns Spot in Record Books

    Theodore Haefner Jr. of

    Salem, N.J., found his way

into the spotlight in a differentway on March 7 as he became

    the 130th bowler in tourna-

ment history, and first of 14

this year, to reach 50 years of

    participation at the Open

    Championships.

    The 83-year-old right-hander

    was scheduled to reach the

milestone last year, but a death

    in the family and schedule

    conflicts postponed it a year.

    "I didn't expect everything

    that happened," said Haefner,

    who received a plaque,

    chevron and diamond lapel pin

    after an escorted solo march

down Center Aisle. "The cere-mony was very nice, and I had

a lot of fun. I enjoyed every minute of it."

Haefner made his Open Championships debut

in Toledo, Ohio, in 1960 and is the only member

of his original team still participating.

"I'm the last of the original crew that went to

    the Open Championships in

    1960," Haefner said. "Two of

them reached 25 years of par-ticipation and then stopped

    coming. We originally had

    four teams that went each

year, and then it dropped to

three. Now, we are down to

one and I have to thank them

    for sticking with me. They

kept pushing me to reach 50

    years, so without them I

    wouldn't be here."

    Before last year, the only

    tournament Haefner missed

    was the 1964 event in

    Oakland, Calif. His wife,

    Dorothy, has accompanied him

    34 times during their 36-year

    marriage."It was sentimental for me,"

Dorothy said. "The ceremony was very nice. I

know that his teammates continued to come to

the tournament to support him, so this means a

    lot."

Lloyd Deguzman, 24, Morris Plains, saw his first 300 game, this in the

Tenpinners League. He has only been bowling for nearly five years. On a

194 average, he rolled 212, 246 and then 300. I was calm for the first ball

in the tenth frame, but after that I couldnt even think, he said. My team

mate and I had been talking about games we like to play, so he told me to

think about games. Before the 12th shot I was sweating. It was nerve-

wracking. So I thought about the song Look at Me Now by Chris Brown.

I even started bobbing my head. It worked.

Lloyd got interested in bowling when watching his father, Francis, who

was on hand for his sons big game. He would like to someday post an 800

series. Meanwhile, his highest series was 758, bowled along with his 300

game. Lloyd is attending Rider University, working toward his MBA.Rich Schwager, 69, posted his first 300 game in the West Morris Mens

League. He rolled 300-216-204 for a 720 series, besting his previous highgame of 299. Fighting nerves on his last shot, the ball went Brooklyn but

    carried all ten anyway.

Schwager started bowling at age 16 in Flushing, New York, in 1957

through 1977 and left the game for about 25 years. He returned in 2002 and

    has enjoyed the bowling since.

In March of 2009 he had quadruple bypass surgery. He had been under

cardiac care as a result of angina in 1983, and was on pharmaceuticals,

exercise, diet and had stopped smoking. But when he felt tightness in his

chest during an exercise session he suspected a problem, and found him-

self at Morristown Memorial Hospital in the cardiac unit. That didnt stop

him from coming back to bowling as soon as he could after cardiac rehab.

I previously had knee surgery and the recovery from that was longer and

    more painful.Calendar:

    Idle Bowling thoughts.

...Over the years I've had the

    pleasure of presenting many

    awards and honors---to tiny tots

    and to history's greats from

every area of bowling. And I've

also been on the receiving end,

the most recent coming when the

    Professional Bowlers Association

named the press room at the

richest pro tourney ever after me

and that unique honor will be

    continued at future press rooms

    at future pro presentations.

I thank the officials of the PBA,

present and past, for the citation

and thank every bowler who ever

rolled a bowling ball and every

    person in any was associated

with one of the true American

    sports.

It was Will Rogers, or was it

Mark Twain, who noted that he

never met a man he didn't like. I

won't go that far but I will say

that I never met someone in

bowling that I didn't like some-

    thing about.

    Through bowling I have trav-

    eled more than three million

    miles, visited every state, and

places such as Las Vegas and

    Reno more than 150 times,

delved into the history of the

sport, learning about the roles of

    women, minorities, bowling com-

    munications and halls of fame.

    Writing, broadcasting, speak-

    ing, serving on special commit-

tees (18 hall of fame committees-

--named to 12) being involved in

major innovations to and for thesport that provide endless fodder

    for all bowling involvements.

The goal always is to just do

everything a little better than it

    has been done.

Much of that starts in a press

room that may consist of a chair

and table in a secluded corner or

an entire floor of the most

    sophisticated equipment avail-

able. And the key factor always

    will be you, the bowler.

...You can't help but look for-

ward to the series of tourna-

ments coming up in the fall in

    some exotic world sites supplied

by the cooperation of the host

    areas by the World Tenpin

    Bowling Association and the

PBA. The gap between top pros

and so called top amateurs nar-

rows more each year and it seems

as though there are less and less

restrictions as to who can bowl

and where and when they can

    bowl.

...I still can't erase the sight of a

diehard bowler pulling up to a

tournament site in a $500 car,

    and the unloading $3,000 worth

    of bowling equipment.

...In a recent stint on TV during

a pro telecast John Petraglia sat

in as a guest commentator and as

    usual did an interesting and

    informative job. No surprise

there. Petraglia was one of the

early color men on early ESPN

    telecasts and quickly showed he

has a grasp of every situation.

    ...There's always a big buzz

when star pros blow what is con-

    sidered an easy spare conversion.

    Too many average bowlers, and

some good ones too, have trouble

    in building confidence in shoot-

    ing at single pin spares---espe-

cially the 10 pin for righties and

7 pin for lefties. Heed the advice

    of top spare shooters who-say,

"On single pin spares, roll the

    ball faster, and straighter.".

    ...There is no bowling crisis

major or minor to which bowling

will not respond to with a meet-

    ing or seminar.
