PBA Players Set for 2010 Japan CupSixteen Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour players, based upon their

points standings for the 2008-09 season, have been awarded expenses-

paid trips to the 2010 Dydo Japan Cup, April 22-25, in Tokyo, Japan.

Four additional PBA Tour players will be invited to join a field which

will include 91 Japan PBA members and 33 non-pros.

The 16 PBA players who are headed to Japan, in order of their PBA

World Points Ranking status for last season, are: Chris Barnes, Bill

O’Neill, Wes Malott, Norm Duke, Mike Scroggins, Walter Ray Williams

Jr., Brad Angelo, Pete Weber, Mike Fagan, defending Japan Cup cham-

pion Patrick Allen, Tommy Jones, Ryan Shafer, Sean Rash, Mika

Koivuniemi, Parker Bohn III and Chris Loschetter

Every four years I have to express my perplexity at some of the sup-

posed sports that are included in the winter Olympics while bowling

has continuously gotten shunned. Bowling made it in one time as a

“demonstration sport” and even the non-bowling athletes enjoyed

going to the lanes and bowling for fun and relaxation.

But now there is curling. And as of 1998 in Nagano it’s a medal

sport. What the heck is that? I watched it from my dentist’s chair and it

was more painful than the stuff going on with my teeth. The crowd

cheering, the sweepers sweeping and the “innings” known as “ends.” I

guess I just didn’t get it. Spittoons and brooms. One positive note: I

would like to hire some of those sweepers to grab a Swiffer and do my

hardwood floors.

And “they” say that bowling isn’t a sport. One of the numerous crite-

ria for a sport to get into the Olympics is “international appeal.” It has

to be available to as many countries as possible. The Jamaican bob-

sled team notwithstanding, bowling is in countries I never heard of and

can hardly pronounce. Tim Mack has bowled on six of seven conti-

nents. Now that shows international availability to me.

All of the other winter sports surely look like sports to me. There is

speed and endurance, excitement and drama. But watching curling

even put my cat to sleep. Maybe I should have been drinking to enjoy

the full magnitude of this tough competition.

I’ve had my winter Olympic rant and you won’t have to read it again

for four more years. But wait until the summer Olympics come

around. Did someone say rhythmic gymnastics?

FAIRLAWN, NJ - It took him half a sea-

son, but Holiday Bowl I’s Rob Andresen

has reached the coveted “200” average

mark by smashing his way to 259-696 in

Sunday morning’s Stan Niemiec Youth

Travel League action at Fair Lawn. With

the Kattine brothers Kyle and Ryan chip-

ping in with 214-613 and 243-592 respec-

tively, Holiday Bowl I snared two of three

games from sister entry Holiday Bowl II.

The latter had solid outings from the

Landau boys as Kyle lifted his average to

203 by scoring 257-656 while Ryan added

219-610; teammate Colette Malyack con-

tributed a 198 in Holiday Bowl II’s sole

win.

Bobby McCarthy rolling 235-621, Brian

O’Flaherty 244-620 and Nick Rossi 222-

597 produced more than enough firepower

to turn back Fair Lawn I, 2668-2599.

Deuces for Fair Lawn I came from Simon

Lezaja 216, Isiah Tolbert 214 and Marla

Auslander 200; Marla’s 569 set was an

impressive 122 pins over her threesome

average although short of her best set; ear-

lier this season, she rolled an astounding

162 sticks above average series which will

be difficult to surpass.

Elsewhere, Montvale I benefited from

season-high scores from 13-year-old Greg

Khan 212-561 and 15-year-old Cassidy

Fiore 210-586 in taking two games from

Bowler City. Anchor Brian Galbraith

closed with 215 and Diane Kalman bowled

fifteen pins over average to help their

younger mates to a team best 1014. For

Bowler City, Ray Geller had an opening

game 219, Stacy Fernandez a pair of 192

singles and 11-year-old David Grant two

fine scores of 173,168.

Maggie Schultz came through with over-

average efforts of 149,152 and Jake Rollins

added 214-603 to carry Fair Lawn II to a

three-game 2467 total, good enough to earn

the team all seven points.
