On about Dec. 21,the occasion o the wintersolstice, the sun takes abrie respite on the tropico Capricorn at 23 1/2degrees south latitude.Ten it begins its six-month odyssey north or arendezvous with the tropico Cancer at 23 1/2 degreesnorth latitude. Along the

way, at a precise second inMarch, its rays are directlyoverhead on the equator, declaring the Spring Equinox. Tisyear that instant occurred at 10:57 a.m.Montana time on Tursday, March 20. In Montana, though, it is only apromise o something to come. Marchsthird week usually finds us deep in winterwith nary a sign o spring, although thatis questionable in this year o 2014. Tepledge is that it will happen, but thequestion is when? I have had the occasion to observe thearrival o this guarantee in various orms, but one moment in time shines: Early May quite a ew years ago, I wasin the Missouri River Breaks near Jordanphotographing the Charles M. I opened the door o myhabitat beore first light to check on theweather. Snow spitting rom low clouds ona north-northeast wind indicated an up-slope condition. My first inclination wasto stay in bed a bit longer and see whatwould happen, but something tugged at

Afer traveling about20 or so miles out into the breaks, ollowinga primitive road on the verge o becominggumbo, I reached the roads terminus. Tenorth wind was still blowing, the cloudswere low and winter was still attemptingto hold its ground by shaking out flakes owhite like she was emptying her bag. Fossils o ancient critters havebeen, and still are, ound in this brokenlandscape o simple grandeur. I decidedto descend into the canyon in ront o me,not in hopes o finding dinosaur remains, but rather to get out o the wind andexplore the deep coulee. As I neared the bottom, the cloudswere lifing. Afer poking around a while,I observed patches o blue sky above, andthe snow had stopped. I then climbed the300 or so vertical eet out o the ravine andtopped the ridge. Te wind had quit, and asense o equilibrium surrounded me. As I started heading out on one o the

long ridges, the wind picked up again, but this time it wasrom the southwest the sky was clearing as the cloudswere rapidly disappearing. Te wind maintained a steadybut warm pace. I continued my trek northward to eat alate lunch on one o the points that overlook the labyrintho breaks and the Missouri River beyond. By now thetemperature was very comortable. As I was perched onmy chosen spot, I noted small flowers literally openingaround me. I realized that at that instant, the prairie wasturning its ace toward spring and wouldnt be denied.Tere was no turning back the balmy wind; winter hadmade a calm surrender. Te promise o Equinox was being

delivered beore my eyes. My hike back to the vehicle was in the southwest breeze. Spring is a great time on thlie was good that day! It is not that winter wouldnt try a brie wand then, as spring would allow it that reedowould grip the climate again until its autumnwinds rom the north would signiy that it wagain. Happy Equinox!
