SPRING

Spring is already beginning here in East Texas.

While other parts of the country remain buried

under heavy blankets of snow or endure below

freezing temperatures, we are witnessing the

signs of spring in God’s creation.

As beekeepers, Bruce and I prepare early (during

the winter months) for spring by getting our equipment ready, scraping

and painting boxes, repairing frames and making sure we have all the

necessary supplies at the ready. You see, the bees know before we do

when spring has begun. But, if we pay close attention to our bees, they will

show us, the signs of spring are around us even when we don’t realize it.

In the spring, the elm trees in East Texas provide some of the very first

pollen for bees, a critical food for the explosion of baby bees they are about

to raise. Our elms started budding at the end of January, and you could

hear the faint hum of honeybees working as you stood under the canopy of

those still leafless trees. We still had some cold dreary days of winter to

endure, but the bees knew that spring had begun in their part of the world,

so they quietly began preparing for what they know is coming – NEW

LIFE.

So, it is with us and the season of Lent. The word Lent actually comes

from the word lencten which means “spring”. During Lent, through self

examination and reflection, we recognize the darkness of sin in our lives

and we offer God repentence. Like the honeybees, we quietly prepare for

the glory of Easter and the new life that we are given through Jesus’ death

and resurrection.

Note from the Pastor’s Desk continued

Children’s corner

Thank you so much to everyone who is filling in for me as I’m out on maternity leave with our sweet new baby,

Alex! He arrived January 31 and has been a sweet joy for our family. If only he would sleep at night! Thank you

also to everyone who has been praying for us, cooking meals and checking in to see how we are! We are so

grateful to be part of this church family.

In March, the Children’s Ministry will continue Journey with Jesus as we learn how we can be Super Heroes for

Jesus! In February our kids made Valentines for children+ in the hospital and nursing home residents, and they

did a great job!

We are also planning ahead for our upcoming Easter Eggstravaganza including breakfast, petting zoo, pony rides,

crafts, Easter Egg hunt and reading the story of the REAL reason for Easter! This event is planned for March 31,

9am-11am. Please help us with this event! We need help with decorating, cooking in the kitchen, craft projects,

and monitoring animals. Sign up to help at the Children’s ministry board, and also please start picking up some

candy or prizes to stuff into eggs when you’re at the store. Every bit helps! Please pray for a safe and fun event for

our kids and community and that the kids who attend will come to know that Jesus came for them, died for them

and rose for them! Hallelujah

Blessings and Peace,

Deirdre

I find it a tremendous gift that we are priviledged to witness beautiful new life emerging in the created world

every spring, just as I find it a gift to witness our emergence from the darkness of sin into a new eternal life with

God. May you enjoy every minute of your quiet preparation for the glory that is to come as we celebrate new

resurrection life on Easter morning!

Thanks be to God and to Jesus Christ, our Savior!

Pastor Tammy Woodard

Church-wide Dinner

United Methodist Women

Wednesday Night Family Dinner

March 14, 2018

6:30 p.m. in Family Life Center

Covered Dish nights are a great way to get to know other church members and

have a great time of fellowship and food. See you there!

We are so looking forward to our new Bible Study. I've peeked ahead and "John's Letters" Discovering Genuine

Christianity looks so interesting and informative by author, Ron Blankley. We also know that we are so blessed

every month to have Martha Dinwiddie bring our lessons to life as well.

Last year, the entire congregation helped us with the Conference goal of gathering Health Kits which we so

successfully accomplished. This year they have assigned each church UMW, 'School Kits'. We will print the

needed items at a later date.

Future dates to put on your calendars: Spring District Meeting will be on April 7, 2018, at Hawkins United

Methodist Church in Hawkins, TX.

Texas Annual Conference will be in May, and if you are interested, the National Conference will be in Columbus,

Ohio this year and the dates are available for that.

See you at 10:00 a.m. in the Parlor, March 7.

Love and Hugs,

Kathleen Kyles V.P.

Thank You

Thank You for Your Support!

The youth wants to thank you for your support! On Sunday, February

11 the youth held their annual Valentine’s Dinner Fundraiser. The

youth had a great evening serving members of the church. The

generous donations will go towards paying for Summer Camp,

Mission Trips, and other summer activities. We appreciate your

continued support of the Youth!

The young people that serve your church as acolytes are a

blessing to us each Sunday. There is always room for one

more. If you know of a child in 2nd grade through 6th

grade (or more) who would like to join this group, please

contact me.

Strangers and Three Word Phrases

I drink a lot of milk and every few days I stop at Braum’s to pick up a couple of gallons. Mary waits on me. I know her name because she wears a nametag. She knows mine because I too wear a nametag. Our conversations are short, usually about grandkids. My wife, daughter and I were on the New York subway a few years ago, and were looking at our map trying to decide where our stop would be to get off at The Cloisters. A lady standing next to us said quietly, “Put away that map and tell me where you want to go. Everyone here will know you are tourists.” Her directions were better than the map. Does it really hurt so much to talk to strangers? “What was the name of the clerk that checked you out at the

grocery, or the waitress that served your lunch?” They probably had on nametags. What about glancing at their nametag and saying, “How’s Bill today?” or “How’s Sarah’s day going?” Three word phrases are easy to use. Think of some of the ones you like. It makes one feel as if the person or business we are dealing with is so kind, and well, sort of human. And, after a particularly long and boring speech isn’t it nice to hear, “And in conclusion”. There are many really good three-word starter phrases like “How are you,” and, “You’re looking well.” Of course, both need to be accompanied with a smile and a twinkle. Hebrews 13:2, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.”

If someone doesn’t look so good, how about “are you OK?” And if you are asked, how about “I am fine.” Be careful if you pray. The answer may come from some other three-word phrases like “can I help?” or “May I help?” or “let me help”. So, mean it when you pray for them. In Matthew 25 Jesus gave us a whole list of three-word phrases;

“I was hungry - you fed me, I was thirsty - you gave water, I was a stranger - you welcomed me. I was naked - you clothed me. I was sick - you nursed me. I was in prison - you visited me.”

Some three-word phrases may be hard to say like “Maybe you’re right, I am wrong, I am sorry, please excuse me,

and the tough one, It’s my fault.” Don’t use “Just call me if I can do anything.” They will never call.

“Dear Lord, put the right words in my mouth. AMEN”

Altar Flowers Per the Worship Committee, the Altar Flower policy for the church is as follows:

Set price for altar flowers/per Sunday is $35.00 (there will be no special requests

for kinds of flowers). If a second person signs up for a Sunday, then one of two things

can happen:

1. You can split the cost of $35.00 (for the two arrangements), if first person is agreeable.

2. If you want a complete complement of flowers which can be placed on the organ or piano (not the altar),

you’ll need to make your own arrangements with your florist, including payment.

The flower calendar is in Harper Hall (by doors going to courtyard). When signing up

for flowers:

1. Choose a date.

2. Print clearly the name of person/persons in “Memory or Honor of”

3. Print clearly the name of person/persons giving the flowers.

Please note that you can take the altar flowers home; the green plastic containers that the flowers are in need to

stay at the church. If you have any questions/concerns, contact the church office (903) 894-6762.
