“In every generation they rise against us to annihilate us, but Godly holiness saves us from their hand.” Passover Haggadah
When I was at Hebrew Union College one of my professors made a fantastic comparison. He said that Christians have this great blow out party, Carnival or Mardi Gras, depending where you are, and follow it by 40 days of self-denial to achieve holiness called Lent. We have a similar situation in Judaism, we have Purim followed by 30 days of preparing for Passover. If you have ever truly removed all the ‘Hametz’ from your self and your home, you see the parallels. This year our thirty days are the Month of March. Erev Purim (when we read the Megillah) is February 28
th and the first Seder is
March 31st.
This year, when we begin to prepare for Passover, may I ask that you remember the people of the Warsaw Ghetto.
The Battle of the Warsaw Ghetto was not, as people seem to emphasize, done with guns and bombs and tanks and hand grenades. It was done with learning and study and self- sacrifice and selfless love. People were fighting the Nazis with their spirit and their intelligence and their humanity.

This year we should remember the Nazis stood to annihilate our spirit, and not just our bodies, they considered us as subhuman animals and tried to make us behave as such.
This year, the diamond anniversary of the military battle for the Warsaw Ghetto, we must prove ourselves to be diamonds as well. We will need the strength of diamonds to withstand the powers both here and in the world who seek to divide us and like the diamond, which loses its value when it is split into smaller points, so do we when we argue, attack, and disrespect each other. The greatest diamonds in the world are the ones who capture light and reflect that light with all the colors of the spectrum. We during the diamond anniversary year of the Warsaw ghetto rebellion must continue to shine and even enhance the multi-colored rainbow that is world Jewry. Jews fighting Jews only gave power to the Nazis!
This must end, NOW, in this year which has seen the rise of Neo-Nazism here in our own country and in Poland, just to name two countries. We, who have survived anti-Semitism in its many forms must be like beacons, diamond like, gathering the light of acceptance and toleration that dispels bigotry and prejudice. Our natural hardness will continue to defeat our enemies, our warm multi-colored glow attracting our friends and loved ones. In the face of great peril, the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto had friends who aided them and protected their children. Alas, there were too few! May we, by our acts of courage, pride and self-respect, fellow diamond anniversary attendees, bring to us all those who are not fearful of battling bigotry, prejudice and tyranny!
Then, if we do this for ourselves, our children and our children’s children, we can shout, “ALL those who died fighting for freedom in the Warsaw Ghetto did not die in vain!”
B’Ahava and b’Herut,
Rabbi Mark
PS. With the Blessing and Support of the Burbank Human Relations Council, we will be doing a reenactment of the Radio play “The Battle for the Warsaw Ghetto”, first aired in December of 1943.
The performance is on April 19th at 7:30 PM at the Community Services Bldg.150 North Third Street, here in Burbank.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
“And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through.”
-- David Bowie, Changes
The news report was shocking yet sadly familiar. An active shooter at a school. This
time at a high school in Florida. Early reports, as they always are, were vague. There
were injuries. No word on fatalities. Then a little while later there was word that there was at least one
fatality. These stories all seem to unfold the same way. Eventually we learn that there were 17 fatalities.
Worried parents converge on the school. Some have heard from their children by cell phone call or text.
Some haven’t heard anything. Surprisingly, the suspect is apprehended alive, a rarity in mass shootings,
where the gunman, almost always a male, usually takes his own life.
As more facts become known we start attaching faces and names to some of the victims. Then the
heartbreaking stories of the lives of those people. This is always the hardest for me as we learn of the
futures cut off, the bravery and selflessness of those who died protecting others. Friends of the victims
tearfully tell the stories of their friends. There are stories of miraculous survival, of scared students
following the lessons learned in the drills that are now sadly common procedure in schools.
Later, the funerals. But first the ubiquitous “thoughts and prayers.” There are calls for action, and calls
that now is not the time to talk about action.
But there is something different about this tragedy. We are hearing and seeing something we never saw
before. The young men and women who attend this school were born in this century, or just before it.
They grew up with smart phones and social media. They have a heathy skepticism of mainstream media
and government, yet an uncanny understanding of how both work, or don’t work. We see video taken by
students on lock down inside classrooms while shots ring out in the hall. We hear student survivors
clearly and strongly demand that action be taken to prevent something like this from happening again.
You cannot tell them “now is not the time to talk about this” because they went through it, and they know
better than the rest of us what time it is. They are unafraid to speak truth to power. They point their
fingers at us and say, “This happened before, why didn’t you make sure it didn’t happen again? Listen to
us, we are not going to let you get away with that this time. And if you don’t listen to us, we will vote you
out.”
They are Generation Z and they are not going to take any BS from us.
The survivors of Sandy Hook were very young. They weren’t allowed and not expected to talk to the
world about their feelings. I don’t remember the survivors of Columbine or Virginia Tech speaking out, at
least not as quickly or forcefully.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, CONTINUED
There have already been effects. Some legislators, both Democrats and Republicans, are actually beginning to
talk about changes to gun safety laws. After NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre’s diatribe at CPA , several companies
that offered benefits to NRA members have disassociated from the organization.. LaPierre had invoked the
names of George Soros, Michael Bloomberg, and Tom Steyer, three Jewish billionaires, and “European
Socialists,” (code for Jews) as among those “seeking to eliminate the Second Amendment and firearms freedom
so they can eliminate all our freedoms,” and noting that the late Jewish community activist Saul Alinsky “would be
proud” of gun control activists.
There is something different about this tragedy. Generation Z is bearing witness to something we have either
been unwilling or unable to deal with. And we ignore them at our own peril. There is something different about
this tragedy. There is something different about this generation.

EDUCATION MATTERS - RSPA President, DAVID GOLDSTEIN
Thanks to everyone who attended our first ever Religious School Grandparents and Special Friends Day on Sunday, February 25th. The kids had a great time making (and eating) hamantaschen with their guests and we hope to make this an annual event. Thanks to Roni Razankova, Jessica Wertlieb, Cherie Rye and all of the other members of the Parents Association and Religious School faculty who helped out with this event. Please join us on Sunday, March 4th for our annual Religious School Purim Carnival which will take place in the Temple parking lot from 10:30 AM -1:00 PM. This year’s carnival will feature lots of games, prizes, hamantaschen, pizza, a bounce house and much more. The concluding session of the 2017/2018 Adult Education series “What Does It Mean To Be Jewish?” is coming up on Tuesday, March 13th at 7:00 PM. After a lively discussion about the role of Kabballah in Judaism, in our February class, the question we will be exploring this month will be “What Does It Take To Be Open About Our Judaism?” As always, the class is open to all Temple members, as well as any other interested members of the community - there is a requested donation of $5 per person. We will soon be discussing a subject for the 2018/2019 series; if you have any suggestions, feel free to contact Rabbi Mark or myself; the topics for our Adult Ed classes have traditionally been suggested by members of the congregation. I hope you can join us at our final class for an informative and thought provoking evening. Be well, and Happy Purim!

We were honored to have our Rebbitzin, Mina Sobel, speak at our Sisterhood Luncheon, on Sunday, February 25th. She spoke about the story of Purim from an historical context. We learned that the actual graves of Esther, Modecai and the King are in Iran at a revered site. She made the story come alive for us. She shared her own experiences as a Jew growing up in Iran and her daring escape from there. What a brave woman she is! Many of us were quite moved by her story. We feel fortunate to have her here with us.
The Sisterhood Luncheon was well-attended, including a couple of men! Rabbi and Michael Johnson were there. We were glad to have Barbara Bolter back among us at Temple. Many thanks to those who contributed to making it happen. Eileen Martin and Marlene Dreyfuss , thank you for doing the shopping and the set up. Thanks to Susie Berman, Cathy and Birdie Zitnick for supplying the coffee, the pretty plates, napkins and tableware. Thanks to Shirley Abramson for lending her capable hands, as well as Martha Sousa, and Lucy Berman for the great posters! And thanks to anyone else who helped and may not have been mentioned in this column.

Do You Have a Son and/or Daughter In College?
Temple Beth Emet has started a program to connect with our students
attending a College. We would like to help them to continue their Jewish
way of life and offer them additional support. This way, they will always have
an open line of communication with our Rabbi, should they have questions
or need direction; and we will remind them of their link to Israel and to keep
connected to the Jewish Community. After college, we hope to have them
join our Temple, as an adult.
Please send an e-mail and give me the following information:
The name of the Student;
Class Level;
Address;
Name of the University, and;
If the Student is a member of any organization or club on
campus.
The Temple will send a care-package for each holiday, as a gift to the
Student with a calendar of events at the Temple for each month. The
Student will be invited to all events sponsored by the Temple. We would like
to encourage the Student to return to the Temple as often as they wish; as
the Temple would like to offer itself as a second home and place of Jewish
learning. I look forward hearing from you!

*Synopsis: A deeply moving, humorous story of a boy who believes in everything and an old man who
believes in nothing.
In 1934, a rabbi’s son in Prague joins a traveling circus, becomes a magician, and rises to fame under the stage name the
Great Zabbatini just as Europe descends into World War II. When Zabbatini is discovered to be a Jew, his battered trunk full of
magic tricks becomes his only hope of surviving the concentration camp where he is sent.
Seven decades later in Los Angeles, ten-year-old Max finds a scratched-up LP that captured Zabbatini performing his greatest
tricks. But the track in which Zabbatini performs his love spell—the spell Max believes will keep his disintegrating family
together—is damaged beyond repair. Desperate for a solution, Max seeks out the now elderly, cynical magician and begs him
to perform his magic on his parents. As the two develop an unlikely friendship, Moshe discovers that Max and his family have
a surprising connection to the dark, dark days the Great Zabbatini experienced during the war.
Recalling the melancholy humor of Isaac Bashevis Singer and the heartbreaking pathos of the film Life is Beautiful—this
outstanding first novel is at once an irreverent yet deeply moving story about a young boy who believes in magic and a
disillusioned old man who believes in nothing, as well as a gripping and heartfelt tale about the circle of life.
The Book Club will meet on the 4thTuesday of every month. The group will discuss what the next book
will be at the meeting, as well as the format of the discussion group.
You may contact Fran at [email protected] or call her at (617) 306-3835.
Fran Bourne-Johnson is enthusiastically inviting you to attend. She will warmly welcome the readers and a lively
discussion is expected. The book she is recommending is both exciting and interesting. What a great way to
socialize AND improve your mind! Let’s get together and share a great reading experience.
