have a life of goodness. However, we judge, jest and joke (at other’s expense) and do things that attack the souls. This in turn wounds our soul! The guilt is sometimes overwhelming!

Sukkot, five days later is not only a holiday about a temporary house. It is about inviting guests out of the wilderness into shelter. How is Burbank or North Hollywood or West Hills, considered to be a wilderness? Certainly not a geographical wilderness but a wilderness of spirit. By inviting ancient leaders of Jewish history as well as contemporaries, you are making the Sukkah a source of civilization or at least civility. You are also beginning this new year with purity, developing soul structure based on the positive of Mitzvoth (good deeds) and rejecting the negative of Aveeroth (baseless dislike). Once again, why allow the ‘tree’ of “Why do we have to invite those people over?” block out the full Lucius vegetation of sharing one’s life and family with another beautiful product of creation. As settlements in early America were seen as oases for weary travelers passing over mountains and fording serious streams and rivers, we now, in 5780, must open our Sukkoth and, if we have no Sukkah, our homes, to weary spiritual travelers who have had trials and tests they have had to overcome to rejoin community. Allowing them to partake of our bounty will enable them to be able to be in the forest of our homes, in G-d’s country.

At the end of Sukkot is Yizkor followed by Simchat Torah. Both of those services deal with death. In the first service we remember those we care about who have left us. A short time later we relive the death of Moses our greatest Prophet. IMMDIATELY after that, we read about the Creation of the world. We could dwell on the details of both services, but what strikes me is that we leave the barrenness of Death for the luscious description of a world which in fact went from ‘Void And without order’ to ‘be fruitful and multiply and fill out the land and you will rule over the animals of the land, the sea and the air’.

To create the world we desire, we must replace the disorder and chaos brought about by the sins of demeaning others with creative acts that germinate new ‘spiritual vegetation’.

Do not allow the trees of negativity to block our sight of the forest of love and creativity!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - October 2016

Recently two articles appeared in the Los Angeles Times regarding American Judaism and its response to the current immigration controversy. The first, which ran on September 17, was entitled Family separation and refugee cap reinvigorate Jews’ activist roots: ‘We’ve always been immigrants.’ The article described rallies across the country, and joined Jews of all denomination, against the government’s crackdown on immigration. It also recounted the long history of American Jewish social activism regarding immigration restriction dating back to the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882. As one leader observed, such activism is “perhaps the oldest social cause that Jews took up and one that almost all supported.”

The second article appeared on September 28, was entitled ‘None of us are prophets’: After a turbulent year, L.A. rabbis wrestle with the politics of faith. This article examined the split of opinion of local rabbis over whether speaking out on issues of gun violence and immigration policies is an abuse of rabbinic authority, or if failing to do so is “a heresy.”

American Jews are not politically homogenous. The old expression “two Jews, three opinions” applies to our views on many issues, including immigration, economics, Israeli internal politics, women’s rights, and LGBTQ rights. It is not always an Orthodox vs. Conservative vs. Reform matter. Within congregations there are strong differences of opinion which can even divide congregations and destroy them. Congregations also exist within larger communities and neighbors can and will make their feelings known.

Temple Beth Emet is not immune from opposing views, from both within the congregation and the community. Over the years, Rabbi Mark has had to be careful when addressing current events and had received an earful when something he had said crossed somebody else’s line. We have received complaints when a post on our marquee upset a neighbor. “Stay out of politics, stick to religion” one neighbor warned. We have even received “warnings” about our tax-exempt status, not from the IRS, but from irritated neighbors. For the record, taking stances on social issues that have entered the arena of political discussion is allowed. We are prohibited from supporting or opposing a particular candidate for office. Religious organizations can even criticize votes and official actions of incumbents, although as elections draw nearer such activities face closer scrutiny.

While Temple Beth Emet is not going looking for a fight, my reaction to the admonition “stay out of politics, stick to religion” begs the question. Politics reflects a view of morality and ethics. Religion’s stock in trade is morality and ethics.

EDUCATION MATTERS - RSPA President, CHERIE RYE

Hello Temple Family,

We hope you have had an enjoyable and restful summer. For many of us

with children in BUSD or LAUSD, school is back in session and we're

finding our bearings with new teachers, new schedules and often new

schools. We are also blessed with opportunities to make new friends.

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who made Beth Emet’s Open House at the

end of August a success. Families dropped off registration paperwork, and we met with

members of our community, including families with children. Our Religious School parents,

teachers and Sisterhood shared their experiences with our visitors. We are excited to

welcome new families to our Temple, Religious School and Pre-School!

Big thanks as well to those who donated to our Scholarship Fund and Family Promise.

Sisterhood, as well as sponsoring their own night for Family Promise, donated roast

chicken for RSPA’s night. Sisterhood ladies, you’re awesome and RSPA families thank

you!

In the coming days, we will be celebrating Rosh Hashanah. Children and grown-ups will

enjoy apples, honey and the sound of the shofar at Religious School. Our choir junior

director, Ms. Robyn, teaches a clever song based on the shofar, ("you’ll go far with a

shofar…") so be sure to ask a youngster to share it with you. Junior Choir will perform for

both Rosh Hashanah and Kol Nidre.

Speaking of the shofar, why do we blow a shofar? It’s not exactly musical and sometimes

it can even smell. Listening to the shofar, though, is one of the positive mitzvot given to us.

According to the Medieval Jewish philosopher Saadiah Gaon, the sound of the shofar stirs

our conscience, reminds us to study Torah, mourns our past losses, recalls Abraham’s

story, summons us to humility and calls on us to confront past errors and mend our ways.

(https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/decoding-the-shofar/) Ask one of our much

younger, contemporary Religious School scholars, and you will receive a no-less wise

answer: “Because it’s fun, and it makes us think of G-d.”

L’Shanah Tovah to you, Temple Family, for a good year, since the year will be good when

we celebrate our heritage together!

On Yom Kippur morning, we will read from the book of the prophet Isaiah. He tells the people that Adonai does not want the people’s fasting, chest beating, and confessions if the people continue to just tend to their business while allowing oppression and injustice to continue.

When we talk about homelessness and immigration rights, we are not talking politics, we are talking Torah. Again and again Adonai commands us to treat the stranger with dignity and provide for the poor, because, as also stated over and over again, “you were strangers in the land of Egypt.”

As a formerly enslaved people, as a people persecuted through the centuries since and as a people almost annihilated more than once, we must understand that “never again” does not belong to us exclusively and we must act accordingly.

Isaiah has a very important message for us. It is not enough to pray, to fast, to beat our chests reciting Ashamnu, or sing along with Barbara Streisand’s Avinu Malkeinu. Adonai, Isaiah is instructing us, is saying “This is the fast I desire: To unlock the fetters of wickedness and untie the cords of the yoke. To let the oppressed go free; to break off every yoke. It is to share your bread with the hungry and to take the wretched poor into your home; When you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to ignore your own kin.”

This is not politics, this is Judaism.

May we all be written and sealed in the Book of Life for another year.

Where: Blum Hall at Temple Beth Emet of Burbank

When: October 22, 2019 7:00PM to 8:30 PM

What is the book we

will read and discuss: A Changed Man: A Novel by Francine Prose

What is charismatic Holocaust survivor Meyer Maslow to think when a rough-

looking young neo-Nazi named Vincent Nolan walks into the Manhattan office of

Maslow's human rights foundation and declares that he wants to "save guys like

me from becoming guys like me"? As Vincent gradually turns into the sort of

person who might actually be able to do this, he also transforms those around

him: Meyer Maslow, who fears heroism has become a desk job; the foundation's

dedicated fund-raiser, Bonnie Kalen, an appealingly vulnerable divorced single

mother; and even Bonnie's teenage son.

Francine Prose's A Changed Man is a darkly comic and masterfully inventive

novel that poses essential questions about human nature, morality, and the

capacity for personal reinvention.

Where to get the book: The book is available on Kindle and in print at Amazon.com and other

retailers. Please read the book and be prepared to discuss it.

Do You Have a Son and/or Daughter In College?

Temple Beth Emet has started a program to connect with our students

attending a College. We would like to help them to continue their Jewish

way of life and offer them additional support. This way, they will always have

an open line of communication with our Rabbi, should they have questions or

need direction; and we will remind them of their link to Israel and to keep

connected to the Jewish Community. After college, we hope to have them

join our Temple, as an adult.

Please send an e-mail to [email protected] and give the following

information:

The name of the Student;

Class Level;

Address;

Name of the University, and;

If the Student is a member of any organization or club on

campus.

The Temple will send a care-package for each holiday, as a gift to the

Student with a calendar of events at the Temple for each month. The

Student will be invited to all events sponsored by the Temple. We would like

to encourage the Student to return to the Temple as often as they wish; as

the Temple would like to offer itself as a second home and place of Jewish

learning. We look forward hearing from you!
