$200 MONTHLY GRAND PRIZE!$1,000 YEARLY GRAND PRIZE!

On the rst Friday of each month at 9:00pm,  Red Meat’s  Max Cannon hosts the biggest, baddest short lm contest in town – just bring us your short lms and we’ll play them on the largest movie screen in Southern Arizona!

In case you’ve never been to a First Friday Shorts show, here are the rules: We’ll play anything you’ve made that’s under 15 minutes long and is brought to us on a DVD, thumb drive or BLU-ray (one lm per person, and DVDs must be playable on a regular DVD player and lms on drives need to be in by 8:00pm). Submissions are only taken on the day of the event, and all entries MUST BE RECEIVED PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACTUAL SHOW (we cannot accept lms after the show has begun, or during intermission). All lms are played in the order they’re received. Every lm is guaranteed to play for 3 minutes, but after that the audience can call for the dreaded “gong” if they’re displeased. If the gong is struck, our intrepid host stops the lm and the next movie begins. But don’t despair … if your lm is gonged, you can re-work it and bring it back to see if the changes you’ve made have pleased the audience. is is a great way for lmmakers to try out new ideas and see how an actual audience responds, so take advantage. You cannot submit the same lm more than once unless it has been re-worked. Remember, the audience decides the winner each and every month, so keep them happy! PLEASE NOTE: We only take the rst 15 lms that are brought in each month and the spots have been lling up really fast. We start taking submissions as soon as we open the day of the show so get your lms in early! PLEASE BE ADVISED: Since we don’t pre-screen First Friday Shorts entries, we don’t know what each month’s “lm content” rating will be. Be advised that some material may not be suitable for all audiences.

Congrats to Malcolm Critcher who won February’s First Friday Shorts..

“A breath of fresh comic air! What really lifts Celeste and Jesse Forever above the rom-com herd, besides breakout star performances from Jones and Samberg, is the movie’s willingness to replace clichés with painful truths. It’s irresistible.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Celeste (Rashida Jones) and Jesse (Andy Samberg) are high school sweethearts who married young.  ey laugh at the same jokes and nish each other’s sentences. ey are forever linked in their friends’ minds as the perfect couple. But now, at the age of thirty, they nd themselves at a crossroads. While Celeste is a success in business, Jesse is unemployed and adrift. Celeste thinks that if they divorce now they could still remain friends. Jesse passively accepts the decision even though he is still in love with her. As reality sets in, Celeste slowly and painfully realizes she has been cavalier about their relationship, but her timing with Jesse is less than fortuitous.   Can their perfect relationship survive this not-so-minor setback? Director Lee Toland Krieger nds the perfect tone to tell a story that is at rst familiar but then transitions into something quite unique and authentic, while Rashida Jones and Will McCormack have crafted a witty script lled with stinging insights, eccentric dialogue, and infectious humor. Buoyed by the palpable chemistry between stars Jones and Samberg , and a stellar supporting cast that includes Emma Roberts and Elijah Wood,  Celeste and Jesse Forever  is a delightful romp that examines the inner workings of marriage and its uncertain place in modern life. (Dir. by Lee Toland Krieger, 2012, USA, 92 mins., Rated R)

“A fun and entertaining sports lm, one that can be appreciated by a wider audience thanks to its solid writing, and strong performances.” – Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed

In the beloved sports comedy e Mighty Ducks, a self-centered lawyer is sentenced to community service coaching a rag tag youth hockey team – and even though they don’t look like winners, they’re about to teach him what it really means to be a Duck! Tough trial lawyer Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) never loses. But when he’s slapped with a community service assignment, he’s forced to coach a scrappy team of pee wee hockey players who can’t skate, can’t score, and denitely can’t win! Reluctantly, Bombay (whose own childhood dreams of hockey glory never quite panned out) takes on the assignment, and with the help of oddball Mighty Ducks team members like Charlie Conway (Spazz!), Adam Banks (Cake-Eater!), Fulton Reed and Goldberg, he soon realizes that there may be more important things than winning. Armed with a new attitude, feathers y as Bombay and e Ducks battle through the hockey season on the way to the toughest game of their lives!   Inspiring two sequels and a real-life NHL hockey team (e Mighty Ducks from Anaheim, CA), Walt Disney’s e Mighty Ducks is a funny, feel-good, slap shot comedy that denitely scores a goal! (Dir. by Stephen Herek, 1992, USA, 100 mins., Rated PG)

In 1969, director Sam Peckinpah’s powerful, violent and controversial e Wild Bunch, about a band of doomed outlaws seeking one last score down Mexico way, shot adrenaline right into the tired heart of the western genre. After a railroad-oce robbery goes sour (and bloody), a band of aging outlaws, led by hard-bitten Pike Bishop (William Holden), makes tracks for Mexico, with a team of bounty hunters led by Pike’s former partner (Robert Ryan) hot on their trail. Seeking that one last big score, Pike and his boys (played by Ernest Borgnine, Warren Oates and Jamie Sanchez)  hijack a trainload of US Army weapons for a Mexican general — but when one of their own falls afoul of their employer, the Bunch resolves that it’s best to go down shootin’. Peckinpah’s blood-soaked revisionist western became a landmark in the depiction of movie violence with its insanely graphic gun battles; the nal, slow-motion shootout/massacre is one of the most astonishing set pieces in lm history.  Exceedingly controversial upon its initial release,  e Wild Bunch  forever changed the way violence was depicted and perceived in the movies. And it is even more startling in its larger-than-life 70mm incarnation.  (Dir. by Sam Peckinpah, 1969, USA, 145 mins., Rated R)

See the new comedy e Conrmation before its national theatrical release at this special New York Film Critics Series preview screening, featuring a captured-live post-lm discussion with stars Clive Owen (Children of Men) and Jaeden Lieberher (St. Vincent), and writer/director Bob Nelson (Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Nebraska), moderated byRolling Stone lm critic Peter Travers!  e New York Film Critics Series, broadcast to 50 selected major markets, takes place exclusively in cinemas and is never available on TV or online.

In the irresistible new comedy from writer/director Bob Nelson, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter ofNebraska, an estranged father (Clive Owen) and son (Jaeden Lieberher) embark upon a weekend adventure that leads to something they never imagined: a true family connection. Eight year old Anthony is somewhat uneasy about spending the weekend with his alcoholic, down-on-his-luck carpenter dad, Walt, while his mom, Bonnie, and her new husband leave town to attend a Catholic retreat. Walt is just as uneasy spending time with Anthony, especially since their rst day together is lled with a series of characteristically unfortunate incidents, including the theft of Walt’s toolbox, which he needs for an upcoming job. As Walt and Anthony set out to nd the person who stole the tools, they begin to improvise around their other misfortunes, leading them to discover a true connection with one another. Also starring Mario Bello, Robert Forester, Matthew Modine, Tim Blake Nelson and Patton Oswald. (Dir. by Bob Nelson, 2016, Canada, 90 mins., Rated PG-13)

JOURNALISM ON SCREEN PRESENTED BY

See the Oscar-winning documentary Citizenfour, followed by an onstage discussion with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author Glenn Greenwald!

Journalism on Screen is an ongoing series combining lms that explore the world of journalism with lively discussions with experts and industry professionals. Presented by e New York Times, e University of Arizona School of Journalism, e Arizona Inn and e Loft Cinema.

MARCH’S REEL READS SELECTIONPurchase a copy of No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA and the U.S. Surveillance State by Glenn Greenwald during the month of March and receive a special “Loft Reel Reads” discount o the cover price – 20% for Loft Members and 10% for the general public. Copies of the book are available at e Loft Cinema and Antigone Books.

In January 2013, lmmaker Laura Poitras was in the process of constructing a lm about abuses of national security in post-9/11 America when she started receiving encrypted e-mails from someone identifying himself as “citizen four,” who was ready to blow the whistle on the massive covert surveillance programs run by the NSA and other intelligence agencies. In June 2013, she and reporter Glenn Greenwald ew to Hong Kong for the rst of many meetings with the man who turned out to be Edward Snowden. She brought her camera with her. e lm that resulted from this series of tense encounters is absolutely sui generis in the history of cinema: a 100% real-life thriller unfolding minute by minute before our eyes. Poitras is a masterful storyteller: she compresses the many days of questioning, waiting, conrming, watching the world’s reaction and agonizing over the next move, into both a great character study of Snowden and a narrative that will leave you on the edge of your seat as it inexorably moves toward its conclusion. (Dir. by Laura Poitras, 2014, USA, 114 mins., Rated R)

Don’t miss this special screening of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent vampire classic, Nosferatu, featuring an original live score combining rock and orchestral music, created and performed by the highly-acclaimed Austin music ensemble, e Invincible Czars!

Blood is life! A classic of German Expressionistic Horror, F.W. Murnau’s 1922  Nosferatu  is one of the most revered lms in cinema history. As the world’s rst vampire movie, it is widely regarded as the rst important horror lm – but it was almost erased from the history books when the estate of Draculaauthor Bram Stoker sued the lmmakers for copyright infringement and most of the prints were destroyed.   Nosferatu  is an unauthorized adaptation of Stoker’s iconic novel that reinvents the vampire character as Count Orlok, a bald, spidery monster with rat-like fangs and giant claws. Filmed using deep shadows and moody low-angle camera placement to maximize the creep factor,  Nosferatu, with its metaphysical horror, plague of rats and unforgettable leading monster,  was so unsettling to 1922 audiences that rumors persist to this day claiming actor Max Schreck really was a creature of the night!  (Dir. by F.W. Murneau, 1922, Germany, silent with English intertitles, 81 mins., Not Rated)

For over a decade,  e Invisible Czars  have been crafting original silent lm scores combining rock and orchestral music, adding custom artwork and unique wardrobes to their performances. Performing regularly throughout Texas, New Mexico, and Alabama, they are regarded by many as the Alloy Orchestra of the South.  Over the years, their repertoire of silent lm scores has grown to include the 1920 John Barrymore version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the 1928 Lilian Gish drama,e Wind, among many others. eir inventive soundtrack for  Nosferatu  is written for four players and includes electric guitar, bass, violin, keyboard, music box, synthesizer, bass clarinet, ute, glockenspiel, bass guitar, and all manner of percussion. e band always incorporates music from the classical realm into their scores, and for Nosferatu, they’ve chosen Bela Bartok’s “Romanian Folk Dances,” in a nod to the home turf of the creepy Count Orlock character.

Celebrate Easter with Jimmy Stewart and his pal Harvey in the heartwarming comedy classic that’s guaranteed to have you hopping down the bunny trail! Free Easter candy while supplies last!

“Harvey  is a classic comedy that rarely takes itself seriously, thank goodness. Filled with memorable performances, great characters, sharp one-liners and tons of heart, it’s a true charmer for viewers of all ages.” – Randy Miller, DVD Talk

Easily the greatest movie ever made starring a 6-foot-3-inch invisible rabbit, Harvey is a charmingly lighthearted comedy about the boundless power of friendship and imagination. e great Jimmy Stewart gives his own favorite performance as Elwood P. Dowd, a perfectly nice guy with a best pal nobody can see – a giant man-sized bunny named Harvey. To his uptight sister, Veta Louise (Oscar-winner Josephine Hull), Edward’s obsession with Harvey has been an embarrassing obstacle in her plans to marry o her daughter. But when Veta Louise schemes to commit Elwood to a mental hospital, a hilarious mix-up occurs and she nds herself committed instead. Now it’s up to Elwood to straighten out the mess using his kindly philosophy, as well as his “imaginary” friend, in this hilariously heartwarming comedy classic based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Mary Chase (in which Stewart had already starred). “Revenge is a dish best served cold.  And it’s very cold…. in SPAAACCCE!”   So says Khan, one of the screen’s greatest super villains, in the sci- classic often regarded as the best of the long-running Star Trek lm series. In Star Trek II: e Wrath of Khan, Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) escapes the tedium of a desk job to join Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy (DeForest Kelley) on what could well be his very last space mission. While boldly going where no man etc. etc., Kirk crosses paths with his old arch-enemy, the vengeful intergalactic exile Khan (Ricardo Montalban, reprising his role from the original ‘60s TV series), who, after decades of burning hatred, has armed himself with the secrets of life, some very unconventional alien weaponry, and a burning desire to wipe out the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Soon, our bare-chested bad guy, leading a crew of near-savage space prisoners, has laid a deadly trap for his enemy Kirk, and set in motion a diabolical plan for universal Armageddon! Featuring thrilling action, dramatic reworks and a scenery-chewing acting battle between Shatner and Montablan that threatens to tear open a giant hole in the universe,  Star Trek II: e Wrath of Khan  is an epically entertaining space opera (with ear-burrowing space worms!) that really satises. (Dir. by Nicholas Meyer, 1982, USA, 113 mins., Rated PG)

PART OF OUR ESSENTIAL CINEMA SERIESSee classic art lms the way they were meant to be seen - with an audience, on the big screen!

“Wild, weird and unforgettable, Branded to Kill is one of those lms that feels so far ahead of its time, we may still not have caught up to it.”– Tom Huddleston, Time Out

A delirious fever dream of a lm noir, Seijun Suzuki’s fractured thriller Branded to Kill is an anarchic send-up of B-movie clichés that transforms a standard crime drama into something outrageously bizarre and unexpectedly poetic. e ecstatically bent story centers on Hanada, a.k.a. “No. 3 Killer,” the third-best hit man in Japanese organized crime, who also struggles with his sensual fetish for sning steamed rice. Near the top of his game, his fortunes change for the worse when he encounters Misako, a mysterious, death-obsessed woman who brings him a particularly dicult mission.  In an oddball moment indicative of the lm’s eccentric sensibility, a buttery lands on his gun at the exact moment he pulls the trigger, causing him to miss the shot. is failure to eliminate his intended victim means that the killer becomes the target, and Hanada soon nds himself running for his life from his former employers, as well as from the mysterious “No. 1 Killer.”  Equal parts riveting suspense thriller and surrealistic, psychosexual nightmare, Japanese New Wave bad boy Suzuki’s most infamous lm (which led to his ring from the Nikkatsu studio and the near destruction of his career, thanks to the meddling of abbergasted studio executives) is propelled by striking black-and-white cinematography, wild set design and avant-garde editing that provides the lm with a dream logic all its own. Poorly received upon its initial release, and today considered a maverick classic and a major inuence on such lmmakers as Quentin Tarantino, Jim Jarmusch, Park Chan-wook and John Woo, Branded to Kill is a gloriously o-kilter 1960s pop-art masterpiece that is by turns brutal, hilarious and visually intoxicating. (Dir. by Seijun Suzuki, 1967, Japan, in Japanese with subtitles, 91 mins., Not Rated)

“I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me.” – Humphrey Bogart, In a Lonely Placee collective sigh of relief heaved at the end of World War II ought to have inspired Hollywood to release a ood of sunny, optimistic “happily ever after” lms.  ink again.  Instead, having seen too much warfare, too much poverty and too much of the dark side of human nature, writers and directors responded by crafting gritty, bitter thrillers that slapped our romantic illusions in the face and  held a knife to the throat of the American Dream. Film noir reveled

in all the sex, violence and cynicism that had previously been suppressed in cinema, spinning paranoid, hardboiled tales of hapless suckers and wicked femme fatales making their way through the darkly expressionistic streets of cities gone to seed.  And the kicker is, audiences not only took it – they loved it. Take a walk on the wild side with ve incredible, essential lm noir classics showcasing the best of the genre’s trademark shadow-drenched aesthetic, murderously malevolent narratives and helplessly doomed lovers (played by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars), all shown on the big screen, as they were meant to be seen!

Don’t miss Tucson Museum of Art’s new exhibition, “Into the Night: Modern and Contemporary Art  and the Nocturne Tradition,”  running 2/27-16 – 7/10/16. Visit tucsonmuseumofart.org for more information.

Fritz Lang’s nihilist 1953 noir  e Big Heat  raised screen violence to new heights — showcasing, among other shocking spectacles, a notoriously jolting scene involving Lee Marvin (Point Blank) as a psychopathic gangster, Gloria Grahame (Oklahoma!) as a tough gun moll, and a pot full of scalding coee! Visually extravagant German auteur Lang here opts for a spare, stripped-down, hard-as-nails approach, with stark cinematography, an economical narrative, terse dialogue, and minimal use of music to create an underworld atmosphere almost literally glistening with sadism and paranoia. (Dir. by Fritz Lang, 1953, USA, 90 mins., Not Rated)

is stylish Anglo-American thriller from 1950, one of the most baroque and bleak of all lm noirs, stars iconic tough guy Richard Widmark (Panic in the Streets) and Laura beauty Gene Tierney, under the hard-edged direction of Oscar-nominated Jules Dassin (Ri, e Naked City). Shot in Britain, while Hollywood black-listers back home in America were closing in on director Dassin, the lm’s luminous black and white cinematography and seedy set design render the streets of London as a shadowy, menacing noir nightmare. (Dir. by Jules Dassin, 1950, UK/USA, 96 mins., Not Rated)

e luridly gripping thriller Pickup on South Street is a leading exemplar of pulp-ction maestro Sam Fuller’s brutally kinetic cinema, lled with the director’s signature raw energy and hardboiled repartee. In Fuller’s world, the heroes aren’t necessarily the do-gooder Feds, but rather the nervy grifters more interested in their own survival than affairs of state. With its dazzling cast and pulpy verve, Pickup on South Street  is a true lm noir classic from one of America’s most passionate cinematic craftsmen. (Dir. by Samuel Fuller, 1953, USA, 80 mins., Not Rated)

One of noir’s essential works – it virtually denes the doom-laden chaos and menacing expressionism of the genre’s universe –  e Killers  is directed by celebrated noir meister Robert Siodmak (Criss Cross, Phantom Lady), and elaborates on an existential Ernest Hemingway short story about a man who oers no resistance when hired killers come to gun him down. A blistering example of post-war pessimism and fatalism, e Killers  also features a smoldering chemistry between Lancaster and Gardner that catapulted both into super stardom.  (Dir. by Robert Siodmak, 1946,  USA, 97 mins., Not Rated)

Directed by Hollywood maverick and auteurist favorite Nicholas Ray (Johnny Guitar,  Rebel Without a Cause),  In a Lonely Place  is a brilliant , moody, murderous love story featuring Humphrey Bogart in perhaps his nest performance. On one level,  In a Lonely Place  is a poisonous rejection of all things Hollywood (one that ranks next to  Sunset Boulevard  as one of the most vicious Tinseltown take-downs in lm history); on another, it’s a love triangle of almost demonic intensity between the director and his two stars. (Dir. by Nicholas Ray, 1950, USA, 94 mins., Not Rated)

“A rigorous, engrossing anatomy of a suspected war crime.” – Guy Lodge, Variety

“A powerful war drama… riveting and complex.” – Olly Richards, Empire

“Utterly gripping and explosive. Tobias Lindholm expertly crafts and immersive and psychological examination of the moral challenges of war. Unforgettable.” – Kathryn Bigelow, director (e Hurt Locker)

In the tense and provocative drama A War, acclaimed lmmaker Tobias Lindholm (A Hijacking) examines the moral complexities of split–second decision–making in battle and the ramications of those choices. Claus Pedersen is a company commander stationed in Afghanistan. At home, his wife is trying to hold everyday life together with a husband at war and three children missing their father. During a routine mission, the soldiers come under heavy re, and Claus must make an impossible decision to save his men - a decision that will have grave consequences for him, as well as his family back home. Writer/director Lindholm has a keen eye for stories that occupy both action and drama genres, and here he explores the notion that all decisions have unintended consequences. Reteaming with actor Pilou Asbæk (A Hijacking), and assembling a supporting cast that includes Danish soldiers and Taliban warriors, Lindholm and his cast inject the lm with a dynamic physical and moral realism that transcends the trappings of a typical war lm. (Dir. by Tobias Lindolm, 2015, Denmark, in Danish with subtitles, 115 mins., Not Rated)

“Bracing… a dazzling blend of drawn and CGI animation… conrms Mamoru Hosoda’s reputation as one of the most interesting writer/directors working in Japanese animation.”- Charles Solomon,  Los Angeles Times

In this fantastic animated adventure from award-winning writer/director Mamoru Hosoda, a young boy discovers a secret world of beastly warriors in the back alleys of contemporary Tokyo. With Hayao Miyazaki settling into retirement, many consider Hosoda as the heir apparent to the anime throne. Indeed, his recent lms — e Girl Who Leapt through Time, Summer Wars,  and  Wolf Children  — can easily be placed alongside the best of Studio Ghibli or Pixar. With an admitted preference for hand-drawn animation, Hosoda displays a storytelling ease and a knack for staging action that puts Hollywood to shame. In his latest lm, he reimagines Kipling’s e Jungle Book, only his version has a lot more martial arts and awesome sword ghts. Alone and on the run, nine-year-old orphan Kyuta stumbles across a realm of anthropomorphic beast people just a few magical degrees removed from Tokyo’s vibrant Shibuya district. ere, he becomes apprentice to Kumatetsu, a gru, bearlike warrior. Like all great cinematic couplings, they get o to a rocky start—Kumatetsu is a bit of a grump—but eventually the two develop an aectionate and heartfelt relationship that must withstand challenges from both worlds. Filled with plenty of laughs and excitement,  e Boy and the Beast  is a thrilling adventure for genre fans of all ages.  (Dir. by Mamoru Hosoda, 2015, Japan, in Japanese with subtitles, 119 mins., Not Rated/Recommended for ages 11 and up)

NORWAY’S 2015 SUBMISSION FOR THE ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

“An impressive, thunderous thriller.” – Peter Debruge, Variety

“A stellar work that puts Hollywood disaster movies to shame.” – Perri Nemiro, We Got is Covered

In this pulse-pounding, fearsomely vivid thriller, a tenacious geologist tries to prevent a cataclysm when a mountain overlooking a popular Norwegian tourist destination begins to collapse into the ocean. Nestled in Norway’s Sunnmore region, Geiranger is one of the most spectacular tourist draws on the planet. With the mountain Åkneset overlooking the village – and constantly threatening to collapse into the ord – it is also a place where disaster could strike at any moment. After putting in several years at Geiranger’s warning center, geologist Kristian (Kristoer Joner) is moving on to a prestigious gig with an oil company. But the very next day he’s about to drive his family to their new life in the city, Kristian senses something isn’t right. e substrata are shifting. No one wants to believe that this could be the big one, especially with tourist season at its peak, but when that mountain begins to crumble, every person in Geiranger has ten short minutes to get to high ground before a tsunami hits, consuming everything in its path. ose ten minutes are some of the most nerve-rattling viewers will experience in any movie this year, but at e Wave continues, the stakes only get higher as director Roar Uthaug keeps things hurtling forward in a constant state of anxiety until the very end. (Dir. by Roar Uthaug, 2015, Norway, in Norwegian with subtitles, 104 mins., Rated R)

“Brilliant, and brilliantly entertaining – pretty much everyone who sees this movie is blown away.” – Alexander Payne, lmmaker (Sideways)

“Astonishing and tragic.” – Kristin M. Jones, Wall Street Journal

“A rediscovered masterwork… sharp and funny but tinged with fatality, it’s a knockout of a movie.” – John Powers, Vogue

Oscar-winning lmmaker Alexander Payne presents a brand-new restoration of Antonio Pietrangeli’s little-know 1965 Italian masterpiece, I Knew Her Well, never before released in the US! Following the gorgeous, seemingly liberated, Adriana (Stefania Sandrelli, Divorce Italian Style; e Conformist) as she chases her dreams in the Rome of  La dolce vita, I Knew Her Well  is at once a delightful immersion in the popular music and style of Italy in the 1960s and a biting critique of its sexual politics and culture of celebrity. Over a series of intimate episodes, just about every one featuring a dierent man (including Ugo Tognazzi and Franco Nero), a new hairstyle, and an outrageous outt to match, the unsung Italian master Antonio Pietrangeli, working from a script he co-wrote with Ettore Scola, composes a deft, seriocomic character study that never strays from its complicated central gure.  I Knew Her Well, lensed in ravishing black and white and driven by a soundtrack of non-stop ‘60s Italian pop music, is a thrilling rediscovery, by turns funny, tragic, and altogether jaw-dropping. Currently making its US theatrical premiere, I Knew Her Well is presented in a new 4K digital restoration undertaken by the Criterion Collection in partnership with the Cineteca di Bologna. “A work of art… an absorbing, even thrilling head trip.” – Jessica Kiang, Playlist

Tracking two parallel odysseys through the Amazon three decades apart, this visionary adventure epic from Colombian director Ciro Guerra oers a heart-rending depiction of colonialism laying waste to indigenous culture. In 1909, a canoe bearing ailing German explorer eodor Koch-Grünberg (Jan Bijvoet) arrives at river’s edge, where the young shaman Karamakate (Nilbio Torres), ostensibly the last member of a decimated tribe, waits warily. eodor is searching for an exceedingly rare ower that he believes could cure him of his fatal illness. Resentful of whites, Karamakate agrees to help only after eodor promises to lead him to other surviving members of his tribe. eir journey takes them through rivers and jungles ravaged by European interference.  Meanwhile, in a parallel narrative set in the same region in 1940, American explorer Richard Evans Schultes (Brionne Davis) conducts his own search for the elusive ower in the company of an older Karamakate (Antonio Bolívar) in a landscape brutalized by the rubber trade. Recalling such visionary lms as Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man and Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, the Wrath of God, Embrace of the Serpent grips with suspense as it captures a dialogue between representatives of two worlds in devastating conict. Gorgeously photographed in silvery black and white, this elegiac adventure story surveys a vanishing way of life and the natural world that we neglect (and abuse) at our peril. (Dir. by Ciro Guerra, 2015, Colombia/Venezuela/Argentina, in Spanish / Portuguese / German / Catalan / Latin with subtitles, 125 mins., Not Rated)

“is docu-thriller is agonizingly suspenseful… a mix of e in Blue Line and Costa-Gavras’ Z.”- Farran Smith Nemhe, New York Post

“Never less than absorbing, Rabin: e Last Day is a meticulously observant portrait of a broken society.” – Matt Fagerholm, RogerEbert.com

“Spellbinding lmmaking. History has never been so crucial to our survival.” - Nina Rothe, Hungton Post

Celebrated lmmaker Amos Gitai (Kippur) delves into the prelude and aftermath of the 1995 assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yithak Rabin in this gripping and inventive docu-drama. For many Israelis, the assassination of Prime Minister Rabin marked a grim turning point for their country. In the words of the commission set up to investigate the murder, “Israeli society [would] never be the same again. As a democracy, political assassination was not part of our culture.” In the eyes of even more people, the murder ended all hope for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process through the Oslo Accords and altered the course of history. But, as Amos Gitai sets out to prove in his brave and provocative new lm, Rabin’s assassination was not just the act of one fanatic; it was the culmination of a hate campaign that emanated from the rabbis and public gures of Israel’s far right. Mixing documentary footage and occasional interviews with key gures (among them Shimon Peres and the PM’s late widow, Leah Rabin), the lm is a dramatic re-enactment of the investigation, the hearings and the testimony of Rabin’s assassin, Yigal Amir. Basing every line of dialogue on documentary evidence, the director probes the collective psyche of a deeply divided country and the results are spellbinding, both as cinema and as an act of historical inquiry. (Dir. by Amos Gitai, 2015, Israel/ France, in English and Hebrew with subtitles, 153 mins., Not Rated)

“is well-paced and cogent seminar spotlights a man who, now 87, seems at the height of his intellectual powers.” – Daniel M. Gold, New York Times

“It couldn’t be more timely … feels less like a lecture than a provocative X-ray of current American political realities.” - Godfrey Cheshire, RogerEbert.com

“Noam Chomsky provides a timely and compelling discourse on what ails the world’s most powerful democracy, and the news is not good.” – Peter Howell, Toronto Star

Requiem for the American Dream  is the denitive discourse with Noam Chomsky, widely regarded as the most important intellectual alive, on the dening characteristic of our time – the deliberate concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a select few. rough riveting and candid conversations lmed over four years, Chomsky unpacks the principles that have brought us to the crossroads of historically unprecedented inequality – tracing a half- century of policies designed to favor the most wealthy at the expense of the majority – while also looking back on his own life of activism and political participation. Profoundly personal and thought provoking, Chomsky provides penetrating insight into what may well be the lasting legacy of our time – the death of the middle class, and swan song of functioning democracy.  (Dir. by Peter D. Hutchison, Kelly Nyks & Jared P. Scott, 2015, USA, 73 mins., Not Rated)

“A breathtaking work of art… a touching, melancholy mediation on life.” – Glenn Kenny, RogerEbert.com

“Stunningly beautiful… a gorgeous paean to both childhood and the quiet, rural life.” – Helen O’Hara, Empire

It’s 1982, and Taeko (Daisy Ridley, Star Wars: e Force Awakens) is 27 years old, unmarried, and has lived her whole life in Tokyo. She decides to visit her relatives in the countryside, and as the train travels through the night, memories ood back of her younger years: the rst immature stirrings of romance, the onset of puberty, and the frustrations of math and boys. At the station she is met by young farmer Toshio (Dev Patel, Slumdog Millionaire), and the encounters with him begin to reconnect her to forgotten longings. In lyrical switches between the present and the past, Taeko contemplates the arc of her life, and wonders if she has been true to the dreams of her childhood self. From Academy Award-nominated director Isao Takahata (e Tale of e Princess Kaguya) and general producer Hayao Miyazaki,  Only Yesterday  is a masterpiece of time and tone, rich with humor and stirring emotion, and beautifully animated by one of the world’s most revered animation studios. Critically acclaimed but never before released in North America, the lm is receiving a national theatrical release in a new, Studio Ghibli-produced, English-language version in celebration of its 25th anniversary.  (Dir. by Isao Takahata, 1991/2016, Japan, in English and in Japanese with subtitles, 118 mins., Rated PG)

“It’s more than just an overlooked item ripe for rediscovery - it’s an essential, and the movie against which all other Shakespeare adaptations should be measured.” – Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, AV Club

e crowning achievement of Orson Welles’s later lm career,  Chimes at Midnight  at last returns to the big screen in a beautifully restored new edition, after being unavailable for decades. is brilliantly crafted Shakespeare adaptation was the culmination of Welles’s lifelong obsession with the Bard’s ultimate rapscallion, Sir John Falsta, the loyal, often soused childhood friend of King Henry IV’s wayward son, Prince Hal. Appearing in several plays as a comic supporting gure, Falsta is here the main event: a robustly funny and ultimately tragic screen antihero, played by Welles with lumbering grace. Integrating elements from both  Henry IV  plays as well as  Richard II, Henry V,  and  e Merry Wives of Windsor,  Welles created an unorthodox Shakespeare lm that is also a gritty period piece, one that he called “a lament . . . for the death of Merrie England.” Poetic, philosophical, and visceral—with a kinetic battle sequence centerpiece as impressive as anything else Welles directed—Chimes at Midnight  is as monumental as the gure at its center.    One of the legendary lmmaker’s greatest masterpieces,  Chimes at Midnight  was also Welles’ personal favorite among his many cinematic gems, saying,  “If I wanted to get into heaven on the basis of one movie, that’s the one I would oer up.”  (Dir. by Orson Welles, 1966, Spain, in English, 116 mins., Not Rated)

“An intimate and unnerving character study that marks a ferociously impressive feature debut from 26-year-old Trey Edward Shults.” – Justin Chang, Variety

“An extraordinary debut feature. Krisha Fairchild’s lead performance starts o riveting and grows ever more compelling as the brilliantly o-center story unwinds.” – Sheri Linden, Hollywood Reporter

Gripping from start to nish, Trey Edward Shults’ award-winning debut feature plunges viewers deep into the disoriented world of its title character, Krisha, a troubled woman who begins to unravel while trying to reconnect with her family. e 60-something Krisha arrives unannounced at her long-estranged Texas family’s anksgiving celebration, looking for atonement. It’s been ten years since Krisha has seen her family, thanks to a laundry list of problems, but she’s now hoping to turn over a new leaf. As the house begins to ll with more family members, all of whom have issues with Krisha, conversations become forced and awkward, and Krisha’s mood drops from condent to combative in a matter of hours. “You are heartbreak incarnate,” proclaims one of her in-laws, and we begin to see why, as her visit, which begins with forced good cheer, descends into chaos. Casting his own family members in lead roles and shooting the entire lm at his parents’ home, writer/director Shults capitalizes upon his personal experiences to create a tense and emotionally thrilling drama, which won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival. As the title character, Krisha Fairchild (the director’s real-life aunt) imbues her role with a dizzying whirlwind of emotional highs and lows, delivering an astonishing performance reminiscent of Gena Rowlands in the Cassavetes’ classic, A Woman Under the Inuence. (Dir. by Trey Edward Shults, 2015, USA, 83 mins., Rated R)

“Splendid! A pitch perfect comedy of manners.” – Peter Debruge, Variety

“Captivating… an amusingly entertaining portrait of fortune, infamy and severe melodic dysfunction.” – Jordan Mintzer, Hollywood Reporter

“An enjoyable comedy with hints of dark satire and tangy melodrama.” – Marco Duse, CineVue

In 1920s France, wealthy would-be opera diva Marguerite Dumont (Catherine Frot, Haute Cuisine) loves to sing passionately for an avid crowd of friends and devotees. e only problem is, despite her vast resources, she is completely lacking in talent. Marguerite is kept in the dark about her cringingly awful performances and extreme vocal deciencies by her long-suering husband (André Marcon, Tour de Force), a butler with his own artistic aspirations (Denis Mpunga, Dead Man Talking), and her nancially-needy singing coach, who spouts such self-serving slogans as “sublimity and the ridiculous are never far apart.” However, Marguerite’s delusions of grandeur reach a tipping point when she receives an unexpected rave review from a young journalist with suspicious intentions, inspiring her to follow her dreams and plan her rst public recital for an audience of strangers. As the big night approaches and the web of deceit and delusion grows to mammoth proportions, can the charade possibly continue? Loosely inspired by the real life story of Florence Foster Jenkins, Marguerite is a delectably sharp and mischievous satire of class pretentions and artistic aspirations, propelled by an unforgettable performance by Catherine Frot as our dangerously deluded heroine. (Dir. by Xavier Giannoli, 2015, France, in French with subtitles, 129 mins., Rated R)

“Creepy, weird and amazing… prepare for a whole new vision of Turkish cinema.” – Ryland Aldrich, Twitch

“Baskin has ‘cult midnight hit’ written all over it.” – Bloody Disgusting

“Weird and wonderfully unpleasant… one of the best horror lms of the decade.” – Chris Alexander, Shock Till You Drop

What should be a routine night on patrol becomes a journey into Hell for a squad of unsuspecting cops in this ferociously terrifying, tour-de-force horror thriller from Turkish director Can Evrenol. Based on the lmmaker’s 2013 short of the same name, and drawing upon a diverse range of inspirations – not only such lms as Quest for Fire, Apocalypse Now and Hellraiser, but also the paintings of Caravaggio, Bosch and Giger – Baskin oers up a nightmarish compendium of imaginative frights that will leave even seasoned horror fans reeling. Responding to an emergency call for backup, a ve man police squad arrives at an old building and nds an abandoned patrol car but no sign of their comrades. Making their way through the labyrinthine ruin toward the basement, the ocers catch glimpses of grotesque and unnerving images in the shadows. Soon it becomes apparent that they have stumbled into the middle of a mysterious, blood-soaked black arts ritual – a celebration where they may be the unwitting guests of honor. And what began as a detour into the Twilight Zone will quickly become a shortcut into the mouth of madness. Tense, surreal and genuinely disturbing, Baskin will invade your dreams with its unforgettable images and unimaginable monstrosities. (Dir. by Can Evrenol, 2015, Turkey, in Turkish with subtitles, 97 mins., Rated R)

“A stripped-down drama built around a powerful performance by Christopher Plummer.” – Jonathan Romney, Screen International

“An intelligent thriller… Remember creates plot devices of almost Hitchcockian cleverness.” – Katie Taylor, Globe and Mail

“A delicately crafted and enjoyable lm… Christopher Plummer turns in a brilliantly nuanced performance.” – Chris Knight, National Post

A masterwork of suspense from one of Canada’s most acclaimed lmmakers, the latest Atom Egoyan (e Sweet Hereafter) lm stars Academy Award-winner Christopher Plummer as a retiree who ees his nursing home to complete a secret mission of revenge some seventy years in the making — so long as he can remember his goal. In Remember, Plummer plays Zev, a man looking for the person who may have been responsible for wiping out his family. He believes he has discovered that the Nazi guard who murdered his loved ones some 70 years ago is living in America under an assumed identity. Straining to seize the evanescent memories of long-ago brutality, Zev, with the help of his friend, Max (Oscar-winner Martin Landau), sets out on a mission to nd this man and deliver long-delay ed justice, with his own trembling hand and failing memory. What follows is a remarkable cross-continent road trip with surprising consequences. Also starring Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire) and Dean Norris (“Breaking Bad”), Remember is a suspenseful, Hitchcockian tale of revenge infused with moral gravity and black humor. If you ever wished that someone would cross Cujo and Old Yeller with e Terminator and throw in one of the stars of e Breakfast Club for extra seasoning, look no further, because Man’s Best Friend is on the prowl! It may not be nice to fool with Mother Nature, but luckily for fans of bad movies, the makers of Man’s Best Friend still gave it a shot.

ZOLTAN: HOUND OF DRACULA(Dir. by Albert Band, 1978, USA, 90 mins., Rated R)

While any old dog can bite, it takes a very special breed to bite and suck, and such is the case with the bloodthirsty vampire pooch at the center of this infamously awful ‘70s horror ick that somehow turns Benji into Bela Lugosi! Ostensibly directed by legendary Z-movie producer Albert Band (producer of such classic schlock as Troll, Robot Jox and Terrorvision), Zoltan: Hound of Dracula is a bona de “I thought this was a joke, but I guess it’s a real movie” classic.

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA(Dir. by John Carpenter, USA, 1986, 99 mins., Rated PG-13)

John Carpenter’s colorful, kooky, ‘ever ything-but-the-kitchen-sink’ supernatural kung fu fantasy comedy action ick is an uproariously rampaging adventure in the grand tradition of 1930s clihanger serials.

THE DARK CRYSTAL (Dir. by Jim Henson & Frank Oz, 1982, USA/UK, 93 mins., Rated PG)

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN(Dir. by Mel Brooks, 1974, USA, 106 mins., Rated PG)

Director Mel Brooks’ hilariously “abby-normal” homage to 1930s monster movies is one of the strangest, funniest, most brilliantly conceived comedies to escape from Hollywood since the heyday of the Marx Bros.

“Fast, light and funny, Galaxy Quest has a wide, generation-spanning appeal – and you don’t have to be a die-hard Trekkie to enjoy it.” – Kevin omas, Los Angeles Times
