Letter from the President

2014 started for me with a great deal of anticipation and excitement as I stepped into my role as President. Through my last ten years of active NIBA involvement, I’ve enjoyed being a part of this organization’s continued

growth and evolution. I’m also proud that NIBA continues to find new ways to bring value to our membership. NIBA is definitely not standing still.

I’m proud of the NIBA committees that are taking the challenges identified at our recent Strategic Planning meeting and renewing their focus on building programs and benefits that reinforce and build the value of your NIBA membership. We can expect to see great new programs and ideas implemented in the coming years.

The Program Committee is going to deliver a fantastic Convention in September. Please pay special attention to this year’s Convention schedule as we have made some significant changes. We are experimenting with a new Convention sched-ule as a result of member feedback on previous conventions. We expect that the new schedule allows attendees some additional flexibility in their travel plans while retaining the value for which the convention is renowned. Seattle will be an incredible Convention location – home of the 2014 Super Bowl Champions and Pike Street Market, a beautiful setting overlooking Puget Sound, a hub of in-novation, and a unique mix of cultures. As always, the Program Committee will deliver a convention that provides excellent networking opportunities for all of us. I look forward to seeing you there.

The Education/Technical Committee offers great opportunities for employee train-ing for member companies through the Key Principles & Best Practices of Light-weight Belting course in Atlanta March 25-26, or the Vulcanized and Mechanical Heavyweight Splice Training in Atlanta April 8-10 (see page four for more informa-tion). Sign up now. You can also access similar training content online at www.niba.org/training

Growth and innovation for any individual or organization requires change and the willingness to take some risk. I challenge you to build a new relationship, learn something new, try something you’ve not tried before, stretch yourself. We live in exciting times. And opportunities abound for those with creativity, courage, and determination to forge a new path.

Have an exciting 2014!

The Internal Revenue Service has issued the 2014 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2014, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:

• 56 cents per mile for business miles driven

• 23.5 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes

• 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations

The business, medical, and moving expense rates decrease one-half cent from the 2013 rates. The charitable rate is based on statute.

The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs.

Taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard mileage rates.

A taxpayer may not use the business standard mileage rate for a vehicle after using any depreciation method under the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) or after claiming a Section 179 deduction for that vehicle. In addition, the business standard mileage rate cannot be used for more than four vehicles used simultaneously.

These and other requirements for a taxpayer to use a standard mileage rate to calculate the amount of a deductible business, moving, medical, or charitable expense are in Rev. Proc. 2010-51. Notice 2013-80 contains the standard mile-age rates, the amount a taxpayer must use in calculating reductions to basis for depreciation taken under the business standard mileage rate, and the maximum standard automobile cost that a taxpayer may use in computing the allowance under a fixed and variable rate plan.

After searching and discussing for over one year, the Marketing Committee is very excited to present you with a new NIBA logo. The new logo accomplishes

the initial goals of an updated look and showing motion but also provides a better overall shape and presents a balance which represents the synergies between Distributors and Manufacturers. Change isn’t always easy but the new logo will help in updating NIBA’s brand to appeal to a younger generation of belting professionals.

The Proud Member logo has also been updated and is avail-able for member use. The Marketing Committee encourages all members to use the logo on their company websites, brochures and other marketing materials.

The logo usage policy may be found here: http://niba.org/files/2413/9326/1534/NIBA_LogoUsagePolicy.pdf

Download the Proud Member logo.

For other file formats, please email the NIBA office at [email protected]

We look forward to seeing how you use the new logo, and share with the world your involvement with this great organization.

In December, a drawing was held for those companies who displayed the new logo on their websites.

Your Contributions Are Making A Difference! By Beth Miller, Products & Services Committee, Flexco

Over the past few years the NIBA Scholarship pro-gram has been able to grow significantly thanks to generous donations made by NIBA members. This

overwhelming support has facilitated not only more scholar-ships to be available, but the value of the scholarships has also increased steadily. At the start of each year the number and value of the scholarships is determined based on the prior year contributions. 2014 will be an exciting year for the scholarship program. Thanks to your donations, NIBA will again be presenting a $42,000 worth of scholarships – this is up 3 times from just 2010! There will be twelve (12) Memorial scholarships awarded with a value of $1500 each (up from nine in 2012) and six (6) Presidential scholarships with a value of $4,000 each (up from three in 2012).

While these figures are impressive, they pale in comparison to the talents of the applicants and winners. Their appli-cations detail their academic achievements, community involvement, and leadership skills. Please encourage your employees and their children to review the scholarship crite-ria and to submit their application for review. Don’t miss out on sharing this fantastic NIBA membership benefit with your employees!

Clarification on Scholarship Fund Raising Efforts:

As noted earlier, the NIBA Scholarship program is a fantastic benefit for the NIBA members. The program is 100% funded based on donations – company and personal. We would like to see this program continue to have the success of the past years and need your continued support. There are three primary fundraising programs:

1. Annual Go For The Gold Program. Each year your company has the opportunity to participate in the Annual Go For The Gold program. There are three reward levels based on the donation amount. All participating companies will be recognized in Belt Line and at the Annual Convention.

2. President’s Club Program. This program is based on cumulative donations to the scholarship program. After your company has cumu-latively donated $1,500 they will be inducted into the President’s Club. Go For the Gold, Raffle Tickets, and any other donations your company makes will be added to your cumulative total. Once your company is in the President’s Club you will have the ability to obtain various gem levels. In addition to recognition in the Belt Line, at the Annual Convention, and on the website, your name badges at the annual con-vention will also have a jewel to designate your gem level for all of your company participants.

3. Raffle Tickets. The Raffle Ticket program at the Annual Convention has continued to grow in both excitement and also the prize value. In 2013 NIBA sold $5,288 worth of raffle tickets at the Convention in Texas. The cash prize for the top winner was $2,644.

If you are interested in contributing to the scholarship program, click here to donate.

Technical Standards/Guidelines for Conveyor Belt DesignBy Doug Gilg, Veyance Technologies Inc, NIBA Education/Technical Committee

As a new member of the Education/Technical commit-tee and a conveyor belt manufacturer representative, I’ve been asked to provide some insight on the techni-

cal organizations that support the conveyor belt industry. The end result is a comprehensive set of publications that we should all use to help guide us in designing better conveyor systems and help us the right questions when choosing the correct belt.

For many years, the technical recommendations for conveyor belt design were managed by the individual belt manufac-turers, such as the “Handbook of Conveyor and Elevator Belting” published by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1923. Much of the detail included specific references to each manufacturer’s products and particular offerings and often had a business slant to the story. As the use of con-veyor belts expanded, the value of an independent reference became more apparent to the industry.

In 1966, the 1st edition of “Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materi-als” was released by the Conveyor Equipment Manufactur-ers Association (CEMA). CEMA’s objective in producing this publication was to make available the experience and technical knowledge of its members as a contribution toward the design and construction of conveyors of superior perfor-mance. CEMA’s Engineering Conference members went on to develop several more revisions of this publication with the 7th edition expected to be available later in 2014. Details on the availability of this latest edition can be found at the CEMA website at www.cemanet.org/publications/.

CEMA is able to provide the industry with standards, techni-cal information, safety labels and safety information from

meetings where they develop and discuss conveyor industry standards, techni-cal publications and new developments in conveyor design, technology, appli-cation and safety. CEMA works closely with other organiza-tions, such as the Material Handling Industry of America and the Association of Rubber Products Manufacturers, with an interest in materi-

als handling, voluntary standards, and business in general. CEMA also maintains contact with all government agencies whose activities concern the conveyor equipment industry. Through membership in other organizations, CEMA is also able to keep a finger on the pulse of federal legislation and regulations affecting the industry which is reported to their membership through their Government Affairs Committee.

In 1973, under the direction of the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), a group of conveyor belt engineers developed the first edition of the IP-1: “Conveyor and Elevator Belt Handbook” with detailed design parameters for conveyor belts themselves. Over the course of the next 27 years, the handbook pro-gressed through its 3rd edition as last published by the RMA in 1989.

Since RMA was primarily fo-cused on the tire industry, the Association for Rubber Prod-ucts Manufacturers (ARPM) was established in October of 2010 after elastomer products company executives mutu-ally agreed that a stand-alone association was needed. At that time, ARPM was charged with picking up the non-tire elastomer products (primar-ily hose, power transmission belts, compounded rubber, sealing products, protective lining materials, raw materials and conveyor belts) and car-rying forward with the various technical and educational activities. In the transition, 100% of the technical publi-cations/guidelines originally written by the RMA for these products become property of the new ARPM.

As a result of this focus, the 4th edition of the IP-1: “Con-veyor and Elevator Belt Handbook” was published under the ARPM logo in 2011. Additional conveyor belt publications now managed by the ARPM group are IP-1-1: “Conveyor Belt Cover Characteristics – Technical Bulletin” and IP-1-2: “Limit of Gap Between Idlers for Troughed Belt Conveyor – Techni-cal Bulletin”. Information on ordering any of the publica-tions is found on the ARPM website at www.arpminc.com/publications-menu.

Additional important functions of the ARPM Conveyor Belt technical committee are to provide conveyor belt design support for CEMA as well as represent the interests of the United States at the ISO TC41/SC3 standards committee meetings. This ISO committee is responsible for the develop-ment of standards concerning pulleys and belts with the SC3 subcommittee directly responsible for conveyor belts. There are multiple available standard documents available from this organization that apply to various details of conveyor belt design and performance.

If desired, The Education/Technical committee could explore some of the detailed recommendations of CEMA, ARPM, and ISO in future editions of Belt Line.

Please send any specific requests to the Education/Technical Committee chairman for possible discussion in future issues: [email protected].
