Lots of good things happening lately. I want to welcome both the Behind The Rock Tour and Duke over at Venomous Ink to the Billiard & Dart News family. You will find their ads in the paper this month. I plan on getting over to Skip & Jan’s and checking out the Behind The Rock Tour as soon as possible. I want to send out thanks to everyone who helps to make each issue of this paper happen. Lots of people contribute content each and every month and I wouldn’t be able to do this without all of your help. At a tourney last month, I was asked about a section that used to be in the paper way back when, where players could challenge other players to one on one matches. With streaming these days and so many great places to play, I love the idea. If you want to post a challenge to another player, get in touch with me (my contact info is at the top left of this page) and I will get the details for the paper.

Mitch Ellerman KO’ed a field of 35 players to win the Desert Classic Tour Stop on February 9th - 10th at River City Pockets.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Ellerman though, as he was forced to take a standing eight count after a 7-7 loss to Rick Armbrust on Saturday.

Ellerman was not the only player to suffer an unexpected Saturday loss. Last month’s winner, Nick De Leon, was sent home on Saturday after losses to Mike Sandoval and Tres Kane. Bobby Emmons was also sent packing on Saturday after losses to Dennis Orender and Tres Kane. Pete Lhotka, Brett Huth and Paul Grande also finished out of the money on Saturday.

As play got underway on Sunday, the final eight players got things started. Mike Sandoval sent New Mexico’s Mickey Provencio to the one loss side 8-3 and B player Rick Armbrust beat Chuck Evans 7-6.

Sandoval and Armbrust then met in an 8-7 race for the hot-seat, and Armbrust scored the hill-hill win.

On the one loss side, Ellerman got up off the canvas and beat Will Sexton in a one sided 10-4 match, and Tres Kane sent Dennis Orender back to the tournament director’s booth with an 8-7 scoreline.

Ellerman then defeated Provencio 10-7, while Chuck Evans was ending Tres Kane’s day with an 8-6 win.

Ellerman then forced Evans to tap out after a 10-2 match, and Ellmerman set his sites on Mike Sandoval.

While Ellerman played his usual game in the match against Sandoval, the real story of the match seemed to be the pool gods getting even with Sandoval over something. Sandoval seemed to get every bad roll imaginable and then more bad rolls after that. Sando-val trailed the match early 6-1, and ended up losing 10-4.

This left Ellerman as the only obstacle be-tween Rick Armbrust and the DCT’s first B rated Open event winner.

The finals would be a double elimination 10-7 race and the first match seemed to turn in Ellerman’s favor in rack five. Armbrust had matched Ellerman punch for punch in the first four racks and the score was tied at 2-2. Armbrust would miss the 10-ball in rack five and Ellerman would bank the ball in for a 3-2 lead. That game was the beginning of the end for Armbrust as he wouldn’t win another game until rack eight, with Eller-man leading 5-2. Ellerman would go on to take the first set 10-3.

Ellerman really let out his stroke and put on a show for the fans in the second set of the finals. Mitch brought out all of the tricks he had from banks to caroms and quickly raced to a 6-1 lead. The Ellerman Express stalled a little after that and Armbrust won three straight

games to get back into the match at 6-4, but Eller-man quickly took control back and cruised to a 10-7 win and first place.

The DCT’s next stop will be a B/C only event on March 23rd and 24th at Bullshooters in Phoenix.

Burt / Sophia Split at KnobbysKnobby’s holds their monthly tourna-ment the 1st Friday of every month, and February saw seventeen players show up to play this 8 ball event where the bar so generously matches the entry of $10 a person. This 9 and under tourna-ment always boasts a tough field of players and February was no exception. Notables including Troy Ridder, Jose Gonzalez, Oscar Avila, Ed Scott and Evans Bishop were definately favored to win, but not this time!

Pat Dicker and Sophia Morquecho found themelves playing for the hot seat match and Sophia beat Pat 2-0. She waited in the hot seat to see who would be playing her in the finals.

Meanwhile, Burt Balancad beat Bruce Hirose 2-1 giving Bruce 20.00 for 4th place. The next match between Burt and Pat was a good one. Burt won the 1st game. Pat then broke and ran out the 2nd game. At hill hill, Burt finished it off with a break and run himself. Pat got 70.00 for 3rd place.

The finals got underway between Sophia and Burt, with Sophia winning the first game. Burt saw the writing on the wall and asked to split the 340.00 prize money. Sophia graciously agreed and they took home $170.00 each.

Bruce and Carol always provide a delicious dinner for all the players. Knobby’s next monthly tournament is Friday, March 1st, 2013. Hope to see you there! 1st place Sophia Morquecho2nd place Burt Balancad3rd place Pat Dicker4th place Bruce Hirose

Joshua Wayne’s performance at Stinger’s 8’s & Under 8-Ball event on February 23rd and 24th could only be described as “dominating”. In a fi eld of 46 players, Wayne was undefeated on Saturday with a combined record of 24-4. His closest opponent lost 6-2.

This was no fi eld full of scrubs either. Notables players such as Burt Balancad, Oscar Avila, Echo Ledger, Terry Tucker, Steve Henderson and Frank Alvarez fi nished out of the money and were done playing on Saturday. Ben Suther-land, Susan Williams, Willie Horton and Skyler Flaherty just barely cashed in 9th place and were also done playing on Saturday.

Sunday play got underway with four players on each side of the board, and any hopes the other players had that Saturday was a fl uke for Wayne were quickly dashed as Wayne beat Tony Flores 6-2. At the same time, Jeremy Gibbs was win-ning a tough hill-hill match with Mike Kennedy.

On the one loss side, John Pegnam ended former BCA 8-Ball Champion Derek Cumm’s tourna-ment in 7th place. Also fi nishing in seventh was Ed Scott, who lost to Will Sexton.

The two players coming over from the winners side both stayed alive in the next round, as Mike Kennedy beat Pegnam and Tony Flores defeated Sexton.

Back on the winners side, Wayne was showing no signs of slowing down, with a 6-1 win over Gibbs for the hot-seat.

Tony Flores sent Jeremy Gibbs home in 3rd place with a 4-2 scoreline on the one loss side and the fi nals were ready to get underway.

For the spectators, it was another chance to watch Wayne dominate a match as he won the fi rst (and only) set of the fi nals 6-0.

Stinger’s has two big events planned for March with a sixteen and under scotch event over St Patrick’s Day Weekend and a 7’s & Under 9-Ball event on March 9th and 10th.

Down 3-0 to Shannon Daulton, I came back to win 4-3. The last ball was a long straight back bank. There were a lot of Phoenix people sweating the match. My back was to them and as the ball rolled slowly toward the hole, there was a lot of cheering. I initially thought I had missed the shot but the crowd just seemed to will it in. Indescribable how good it felt. The worst part was I drank about 15 beers during that match and lost the next match. The best week of my life I started dating Sara Miller there and 8 years later we are still together. What got you started playing pool: When I was fi ve years old we visited some of my parent’s friends that had a pool table in a separate building on their farm. I can still see that table in my mind 47 years later. It was love at fi rst sight. I only got to play for about an hour but from then on I was hooked. During the summer we would play caroms on those little four pocket wooden boards with the red and green rings and sometimes get to play real pool at a friend’s table. Started playing league for Pasqualies Pizza in the early 80’s and found out how good some people could play the game.Home Room (s): My home room is Bullshooters. I can’t say enough about how much Mike Bates has done for Arizona pool and darts. His generosity and business acumen are unparralled in this business. Alltough I love playing for Bullshooters, I miss the days of The Golden Eightball and Alexander’s.

APA Phoenix Metro held its 5th Captain’s Tournament on February 24th at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. A full field of 64 players showed up to represent their teams and play for the honor of having their name on the wall at Main Street Billiards to go along with the trophy and cash. Jeff Heimburger from Bullshooters won the 1st place trophy and $350 in cash. He played exception-ally well fending off some very strong players that had their eye on the 1st place prize. Some of APA’s finest players came out for a great day of quality competition and fun. Several of APA’s lower ranked players, namely Arte Lewis and Joe Mercier had a great outing placing in the top 8 spots, proving that the Equalizer Handicap System that APA uses allows everyone a chance to win.

The Captains tournament is held each session at Main Street Billiards and is a tournament that was created to show appreciation for captains in the APA. Gina Nowlin and her husband Doug Nowlin are the APA league operators in the Phoenix area. Gina says the captains are the players that are the most valuable person on a team. They are the ones that keep things organized and flowing smoothly on league nights. They have a lot of responsibility and we just want to show them some appreciation. This tournament has become very popular and has grown each session since it was began almost 2 years ago.

We would like to congratulate the following winners and thank everyone for making the tournament such a success.

1st Place - $350 - Jeff Heimburger 2nd Place - $160 - Dan (Dad Jacobs)3rd Place - $80 - Joe Mercier and Joe Mulhall5th Place - $40 - Arte Lewis, Robert Pamiroyan, Don Sprong and Charlie Mills

We would also like to thank Thor and his staff at Main Street Billiards for hosting this tournament each session. They always take good care of the players.

APA Phoenix Metro held its session ending Fall 2012 Tri-Cities Tournament on February 9th & 10th at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. This is the 1st step in the year long “Road To Vegas “ for teams hoping to win the prize slots awarded to the 5 winners of the City Tournaments in May and June 2013. It is also the awards and cash payout ceremony where there is over $20,000.00 cash and trophies given to the top placing teams throughout the session. In addition a plaque and $50.00 cash are awarded to the 50 top gun win-ners for the session. 16 teams meet each day to battle it out for the 8 slots to the City tournament that will be held in June of this year. The City tournament will be the final step for the winning teams to a paid trip to compete in Las Vegas in the APA National Team Championship. The National event is held every year in Vegas and consists of over 1500 teams competing over a 10 day tournament that is proclaimed as ‘The Largest Pool Tournament in the World’ by the Guinness Book of World Records. It was a big success with raffles and giveaways being handed out by the League Operators that included cues and cases, DVD’s and other pool accessories. Everyone played well, had some fun and many great matches were played. Con-gratulations to all the winning teams and all the teams that attended the tournament. They were among the best teams in the APA. The next Tri- Cities will be June 1st and 2nd at the end of this Spring session.

APA Phoenix Metro held their annual Valentine’s Day Jack & Jill Scotch Doubles Tournament at Main Street Billiards on February 16th. This is popular tournament that sends the winners to Las Vegas to represent Phoenix in an APA National Championship. Brad An-drews and Polly Hughes were the big winners this year. In addition to Trophies, Brad and Polly received $350 cash and the entry to the National event that will be held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in April. Second place winners were Chris Carlisle and Diana Leon, and third went to Don and Christie Sprong. APA Phoenix Metro sends two Jack & Jill teams to the National Championships held in Las Vegas each April.

One slot is received by the winning team at our annual Valentine’s Day tournament, the other is given to the winning team in our “Friday Night Date Night” held each Friday night at Bullshooters. This is a very fun division and everyone, whether you are a seasoned player or just a beginner, is invited to enjoy a fun evening playing pool in this or any other division that APA has to offer. Phoenix TAP Leagues SoldTo All Current and Past TAP League Players! This is our official announcement that we have sold the Phoenix TAP Pool League as of February 2013; how-ever, the new owners have been involved for several months prior to the official sold date. Don’t panic (LOL)…we will remain on as consultants with the new owners for one year to ensure a successful transition and continue meeting your expectations. The new owners are Sheri and Les Elliott. They currently own a very success-ful bar business and an existing TAP league in Arkansas and are very experi-enced. You may have noticed that Les has been accompanying Peggy and Robert dur-ing the start-up phase to learn the way that we manage each division. Sheri has remained in Arkansas to continue to run their businesses there until she can move here permanently. We really appreciate all the support we’ve had from our dedicated players over the last eleven years. We had a great time, but it’s time for us to move in a new direction with our other billiard companies. You will see both of us very involved and playing on several divisions – we love the sport of pool just like you do! Thank you for everything.

Robert and Peggy

The 9th Annual ACS Arizona State Champion-ships crowned their winners over March 22nd through 24th at Bullshooters in Phoenix. Four different divisions were contested, including Men’s & Women’s Singles and Teams.

The singles divisions kicked off on Friday night and the ladies saw seventeen players, an increase of over 200% from last year, doing battle for the title. Defending champion Theresa Eibner had the misfortune of drawing tournament newcomer Sophia Morquecho in the first round and that was the beginning of the end for Eibner’s hopes of keeping her title. Morquecho would remain undefeated to the match for the hot-seat, where she beat Cathy Kelley 4-2. Kelley would bounce back from that loss with a win over Claudia Mo-rado on the left side of the board, but the rematch with Morquecho in the finals would see Sophia score another 4-2 victory for first place.

The Men’s singles division saw a slight increase from last year, with twenty two men competing this year. Last year’s winner, Richie Daniels, looked like he was in good shape to win the title again this year as he cruised to the hot-seat

match. Unfortunately for Daniels, Junior Flores had other plans and sent Daniels to the left side of the board. Daniels dispatched Jim Henrickson on the one loss side to earn the right for another shot at Flores in the finals, but it wasn’t to be this year as Flores won the first set of the finals to earn the crown.

The teams got underway on Saturday with five ladies teams and seven men’s/open teams. Both of these divi-sions saw an increase in participation from last year.

The Stacked Racks (Mari Simonson, Teri Curtis, Sara Sorg & Claudia Morado) represented Dave’s on North-ern and took the hot-seat with a 10-7 win over Barefoot 4 Play (Kristin Haney, Peg Hurst, Lisa Turlip & Laura Newtar) out of Barefoot Bobs in Prescott.

On the one loss side, Miller Time (Sara Miller, Cathy Kelley, Leandrea Gaff and Becky Onnembo) were look-ing for a chance to avenge an earlier loss to Stacked Racks and they would get that chance after a lopsided 10-4 win over Barefoot 4 Play.

The final match was a close one, but in the end it was Stacked Racks with a 10-8 win and the ACS Ladies Team Championship Title

The men’s/open teams division looked to be a race for second place as The Foul Five (Andy Davis, Tim Henrickson, Tom Schmitt, Pete Lhotka and Bob Soto) out of Barefoot Bob’s were completely unstoppable. The Five defeated the Nugget Nite Owls (Ann Burgess, Ray Burgess, Tim McNama-man, Dave Gutierrez and Carlos De Santiago) 16-0 for the hot-seat.

The Nite Owls faced off against The Nuggeteers (Francis Case, Andrew Rocha, Dennis Huntley, Mike LeGrand and Willie Thompson) on the one loss side and won the match to earn another shot at the Foul ones in the finals.

While the Nite Owls would get on the board in the finals, it was really no contest with The Foul Five cruising to a 16-2 win and the ACS State Champi-onship Title.

Dale Menghe & Joseph Farias teamed up and took down a red-hot team of Ebony Kelly & John Casey in the finals to win Groggy’s 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on February 2nd.

Menghe & Farias defeated Chris Negrin & Mike Luta for the hot-seat and took a seat to wait for their opponents in the finals.

Their opponents, Kelly & Casey, had a much longer route to the finals after los-ing to Chris Croft and Steve Stowers 8-1 in the first round. Seven matches later, Kelly & Casey had ran through the one loss side and were facing Menghe & Farias in the finals.

The first set of the finals went to Kelly & Casey, but Menghe & Farias came back for a hill-hill win in the second set to take first place.

Final Payouts:

1st Dale Menghe & Joseph Farias $8902nd Ebony Kelly & John Casey $2153rd Chris Negrin & Mike Luta $1504th Jaye Succo & Ryan Daw $50

The 198 bar box and 8 foot table division has opened. New records are currently being set.Deby Welfringer holds current high score of 126. Drew Curmitt 6 consecutive snap games, Deby Welfringer 7 total snap games and Larry Fran-cisco with 25 balls on the break not to mention other records already set in the 220 division and the women took both 1st place spots in the 198 Open and Intermediate handicapped divisions last week. What does all this mean?

This is just an example of what happens and the excitement with Behind the Rock Tour (BTRT). BTRT is a weekly national tournament held from any poolroom. The tour is currently being played in the states of OR, WA and ID with more rooms getting ready to come on board including Skip & Jan’s Sports Bar in Tempe AZ. Skip & Jan’s Sport Bar is playing on Sundays starting at 1PM. Any pool room or bar is qualifi ed to be a host location. Players, this is a weekly tourna-ment not league. Players are not required to play each week or they can post as many matches as they’d like to pay and play for. We are currently running 2 games with 5 divisions in each game. Players play in a division according to skill level.

League is a great way to get new players inter-ested in the sport and it’s a great recreational tool for competition, but pool isn’t about win/loss. Pool is about skill combined with creativity and that’s why we all love the sport. In addition to players that want an avenue to up their skills at the game, we have a whole group of players that are stuck somewhere between league and professional caliber. This tour was designed as a grooming ladder for players, from intermediate to professional, to climb as their skills improve. This tour was built for the players that want something more from their game. Players can

compete with players their caliber without having to go far from home or spend days away from the job or family. Players can compete in a larger tournament which only takes 1-1/2 hours a night to play and get home in time to go to work the next day.

We have combined technology and the resources now available to us with our great sport. We now have a virtual tournament utilizing technology to enhance our industry and this is how it’s done. We have a robust website that handles everything. Remote pool rooms upload weekly matches to the website and all tourna-ment results, handicaps and player’s rankings are cal-culated right on the website. BTRT is currently only in the USA, but this format allows us the capacity to hold world wide events. This could be weekly, monthly or annually. Can you image a weekly world wide event? With this format it is possible. Here’s where the tour is today.

BTRT is a weekly national (USA) competition run out of local pool rooms and bars. Each week pool rooms run their events and players play their matches. By midnight Saturday participating locations upload matches to www.behindtherocktour.com and the tourna-ment is closed. Every Sunday the week’s tournament is calculated, winners are posted and payouts are done every Monday. Every division pays a third of the fi eld and is paid out every week. This allows rooms to have a smaller group of players, but combined with the rest of the national locations each week it turns into a larger event that is competitive according to skill level and very exciting. Just imagine if we had 3 rooms in each state, with only 10 players in each room the weekly payout would grow to be $12,000/week. That’s some-thing the pool world has to look forward to. The way to achieve this by players participation and that’s you!

Behind The Rock Tour (BTRT) is designed to inspire players to improve their games, provides an educational

avenue for players that want to grow and a for-mat that supports the purpose. The format forces players to take a real look at their skill level. Since players do not have an opponent all excuses are removed, bad rolls no longer exist and it’s only up to the player to perform. This format helps to iden-tify problem skills, highlight personal great per-formances and so many other things that we didn’t expect for example: a shift in mind set, importance of the break in any game, player interaction and competition dynamics.

BTRT is designed for all skill levels using a 90% true handicapping system. This handicapping system has never been applied to pool until now. This system lets players that have a personal high performance push up into the money regardless of skill level. This amounts to great performance with reward.

Tres Kane Wins One Pocket MadnessTres Kane welcomed another full field of sixteen players to Bullshooters’ One Pocket Madness event on February 16th - and in addi-tion to running the event, he also won it.

The winners side came down to Kane and Brian Reich. Neither player had an easy route to the finals, with Kane scoring notable wins over Gus Briseno and Doc Rice, while Reich had notable wins over Lenny Mar-shall and both Paul Feltman Sr and Paul Feltman Jr.

The hot seat match went to Tres 2-0, and Reich went to the left side of the board looking for an opponent.

That opponent would be Carl Wilson, who had put together a nice string of wins after a first round loss to Tom Schmitt. Wilson had wins over Eric Young, Rod Elliott, Paul Feltman Jr and Schmitt on the left side of the board.

Brian Reich would end Wilson’s run with a 2-0 scoreline in the semi-final match.

The race to 3 rematch between Kane and Reich was much closer with the play-ers being tied at 1-1 and 2-2 before Kane won the case game for a 3-2 scoreline and first place.

Final Payouts:1st Tres Kane $2502nd Brian Reich $1803rd Carl Wilson $1004th Tom Schmitt $50

Bernie Tops Kolby’s One PocketBernie Pet-tipiece is a player that has been known to sometimes come out a little flat at the beginning of a tourna-ment. But once he gets into a routine, he is tough to beat. That proved to be the case again on February 23rd at Kolby’s One Pocket Event, when Pettipiece dropped his open-ing round match to Eric Young and came back to win six straight matches for first place.

After defeating Pettipiece, Young went on to beat Lenny Marshall before the match for the hot-seat. His hot-seat opponent, Gus Briseno, had wins over Sammy Martinez and Bobby Emmons before his match with Young. Briseno would take the hot-seat with a 2-0 victory over Young.

On the one loss side, Bernie was stringing matches together. He sent Marshall to the streaming booth in 4th place 2-1 and then kept Eric Young out of the cash with a 2-0 win.

The finals couldn’t have been more evenly matched as Gus and Bernie fought to hill-hill with both of them needing the last ball in the case game. Bernie would end up owing a ball and needing both balls on the table, but got both balls for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Bernie Pettipiece $2202nd Gus Briseno $110

Some Things to Think About

So what to write about this month? Well how about I touch on a few points that I have received emails about with different aspects of the game which may help a few players.

The first one I have was a player who asked “I am playing really well but when I play the top players and lose it really affects my game. I then get all depressed and lose some confi-dence. How do I get over this?”

This is a very common reac-tion for people that focus on the outcome versus the perfor-mance. You can never control the outcome of a match but you can control your performance in a match. I gave him this reply -When I started play-ing darts I used to take $50 to tournament as all the best players played for money. I would pay for a top player to play with me as it was doubles and a player asked me why I bother when I had no chance to win? I replied “If I do not play I will never have a chance to win but more important is if I do not play the best, how do I learn how good I need to be or what I need to work on to be better?” If you only see a defeat as a defeat then you will never truly become a great player. A defeat is a lesson that shows you something about your game you need to work on thus a positive look on what happened. Take the lesson and go work on that area of the game until it is stronger versus feeling like you should have won because you are good. The better you become in darts the more work it actually takes to improve your game, I have to spend way more time now practicing then I ever have, as I now play in a arena that the room for error is so small its crazy.

“A player I consistently beat just got a dart company to sponsor him and I feel like he does not deserve it”

This or something along this line is something I hear often from players. People seem to think just because you play well you should have someone come along and sponsor you as

you deserve it. Well it does not work that way at all. Yes you have to have a good game, but what players need to realize is that when a company enters a partnership with you they need to be getting 3X return on their INVEST-MENT in you. What this means is by helping you out, you need to be able to increase their profits. So does winning events do this for a company? Not re-ally unless you’re on TV and when you are good enough to make TV you do not need sponsors. What does get you sponsors is having a big internet pres-ence and constantly promoting their products. Talking about their product when at events so others will try it out, finding a dart store and such that don’t carry the product to start carrying the product. In essence. when you become a sponsored player you become a sales person for that product. A guy I know that makes a ton of actual income from sponsors is barely a pro level player and hasn’t won in years yet he makes the most because he is an amazing promoter. So as much as your talent comes into play, knowing how you can improve a company’s bottom line is way more important.

“Does the way you throw a dart really matter?”

Oh yes it does. I know a player that just loves her darts yet she has darts slapping off the board and ending up on the ground more often than in the board. Two things are wrong with her. First, she has a very short stroke, basi-cally no follow through at all. The fol-low through is by far the most impor-tant part of a dart stroke. If you have a short throw it will fail you so often, you will never truly throw all 3 darts the same thus never really develop-ing the accuracy you want. If you are not fully extended at then end of the throw, you are just not as good as you can be. I often tell players to “point at your target once you let go of the dart.” This helps you get full exten-sion which leads to a smoother throw and increased performance. Secondly, there really is a science to how you set up your dart. Not everyone can throw a front loaded dart, a short shaft or a speed flight. There is a reason there are so many different choices in prod-ucts to set up a dart. Ideally you want the dart to enter the dart board at right angles to the floor, you want to have the flattest trajectory with the least amount of “wobble” in your darts path. The best way is to go to a steel board and throw your darts to see how they actually are entering the board. Make one change at a time (flight design, shaft length etc) until you get close to

the desired flight path and trajectory.

Lastly, forget your averages and defi-nitely do not run around telling every-one what they were (especially do not be posting them on Facebook). People should realize that the only average that means anything is the worst one you throw - not the best one!!! The best one is one that comes along every so often yet people want to judge/rate themselves on that one. The one that matters is the worst one you throw because that is the one you can depend on happening. When you practice, what you really are trying to do is im-prove the worst game you can possibly play as that is the only game you can ever know for sure that could show up. This comes back to that whole thing about performance versus outcome - focus on improving your worst perfor-mance and you will end up getting the outcomes you desire more. Have fun, because for 95% of all the people in the world that play darts, You are still going back to work on Monday so no need to sweat it too much.

Pool Instructor Directory Shepard Wins Kitty’s 7 & Under

Brian Shepard dominated a field of sixteen players to win Kitty’s 7’s and under 9-Ball tournament on February 9th.

Shepard flexed his muscles in the hot-seat match, where he handed Amado Martinez a 7-0 doughnut.

Amado bounced back from that loss to defeat Rick Morris 7-3 on the one loss side and earn another shot at Shepard in the finals.

Martinez came out strong in the finals and gave Shepard his first loss in a 7-4 match. Shepard quickly regained the upper hand and scored a 7-3 win over Martinez in the second set of the finals.

Winkler & Neal UndefeatedJohn Neal & Dennis Winkler were the team to beat, and not one of the other twenty one teams could do it at Kitty’s 12 & Under Scotch Doubles event on February 16th.

John and Dennis scored a hill-hill win over Carlos De Santiago & Daniel Jaworoski to take the hot-seat and settled in for the long wait before the finals.

As was the story earlier in the month at Groggys 15 & Under, John Casey & Ebony Kelly were mowing down the competition on the one loss side. John and Ebony had lost to Dennis & John in the final eight on the winners side, but had bounced back nicely with notable wins over Joe Wylie & Jeff Vikete and Carlos & Daniel.

Unfortunately for John and Ebony, they ran out of gas in the finals and were forced to settle for second place after losing the first set of the finals 7-2.

Kittys Scotch Split

John Neal & Lawrence Yberra didn’t even know each other before Kitty’s 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on February 23rd. They both ended up needing partners though, and teamed up to split first and second place with John Mar-quis & Mike Roman.

It was Neal & Yberra that took the hot-seat, with a 6-0 win over Dale Menghe & Chuck Bobbitt.

On the one loss side, the two teams that lost in the final four on the winners side were facing off as Marquis & Roman defeated Ebony Kelly and Guy Martinez.

John & Mike then sent Dale and Chuck home in third place after a 7-3 match, and the finals were on.

The first set of the finals went back and forth with ties at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4, before Marquis & Roman won the next three games for the 7-4 win.

Considering the lateness of the second match, both teams decided a split was called for.

Complete Payouts:1st John Neal & Lawrence Yberra $3451st John Marquis & Mike Roman $5153rd Dale Menghe & Chuck Bobbitt $1904th Ebony Kelly & Guy Martinez $505th Pete Gresh Sr. & JB Hart $60 (side pots)

Arizona Billiard & Dart News March 2013

(Article continued from page 15)This means no matter the player’s skill level they could be next week’s winner based on personal performance. We have the intermediate division for players that don’t typically run out. The Open division for players that may run-out or have high ball runs and have higher peaks in their game. The advanced divi-sion players are typically players who consistently break and run more than 3 racks out of 11 games. With our handicapping system it allows advanced play-ers to participate in the Open division and it’s fair for all that participate. All players start in a scratch division for 6 matches to establish an average, then are moved to a division according to skill level and assigned a true 90% handicap (similar to what works in golf or bowling).

Tri-annual events run every 4 months with a higher entry fee and money added. The next 220 tri-annaul event is scheduled for March30-31 and the 198 tri-annual event April 13-14.

All rooms will play simultaneously starting at 11:30am PDT. Two rounds are played and matches are uploaded to the website www.behindtherocktour.com. Winners of round 1 are calculated and the top 75% of the fi eld move to the Sudden death round. Sudden death is one match. Matches are uploaded and the top one third of the fi eld goes to the fi nals on Sunday for 2 matches. This is a very exciting event. As matches are completed they are uploaded to the website. Players on the west coast can view scores that are coming in on the east coast (and vice/versa). To qualify for the tri-annual events, players need to have played 11 matches during the previous 4 months (remember you can play more than one match a week).

In the “220” division player’s play 11 games of 10 ball vs. the Ghost and the “198” division plays 9 ball vs. the Ghost. The Ghost means players break, take ball-in-hand and run balls in rotation until they foul, miss or run-out. Every ball pocketed scores one point. A Snap, Cut and COE defi nes they type of run-out a player had.

We encourage all players to join the tour and put your skills to the test. Pool rooms we encourage you to provide this format for the players to inspire play-ers to practice, work on their game and support your room. Players if you’re looking for something different and a challenge, this is for you.

If you’d like to play, talk to your local pool room owner and contact us at 253-226-3594 or [email protected] and let’s get you playing.

Behind The Rock Tour Mike & Michele at 480

Michael Selle & Michele Hanson went undefeated on February 9th to win the Max & Ted’s 480 Scotch Doubles event.

Selle & Hanson (an 11 rated team) took the hot-seat with a 4-3 win over Ernie & Mike.

Ernie & Mike would then drop their next match to Bill Van Der Weyst and Corky Callahan on the one loss side 7-4. Bill and Corky had lost early in the day to Harold Lyons and Laura, but were making their way through the one loss side with dominating wins.

Bill & Corky’s comeback attempt would end one match too early though, as Michael & Michele scored a 4-4 win in the fi nal match to take home fi rst place.

Final Payouts:1st Michael Selle & Michele Hanson $2052nd Corky Callahan & Bill Van Der Weyst $345 (with all side pots)3rd Ernie & Mike $1304th Rob & Jerry $30
