What a turn-out at the Mezz Tour Stop in Phoenix last month. 87 players is something to be proud of. I just wish we hadn’t seen so much of that prize money go back to California with the tour. Speaking of tours, the Desert Classic Tour is now the Diamond Pool Tour. Read all of the details on page 28. The Diamond Pool Tour kicks off the new season at Skip & Jan’s on Feb 7th - 8th. The Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour also kicked off their new season at Skip & Jan’s this month. They will be in action on Feb 28th - March 1st. The Arizona Ratings Committee will be holding their first meeting of 2015 at Bullshooters on February 22nd. Anyone is welcome to come down and see how the committee works. Until next time... - Mike

Cougar and Lawrence Ybarra matched up for the hot-seat, with Crugar cruising to a 4-0 win.

On the one loss side, Tony Page had bounced back nicely from his loss to Cru-gar on the right side of the board. Page had wins over Todd Dilley, Ed Scott and Ybarra to earn another shot at Crugar in the finals.

Page won the first game of the finals, but Crugar then won four straight games for the 4-1 victory and first place.

Freezer Wins One Pocket Madness

Scott Frost went undefeated through a larger field than usual to win Bullshoot-ers One Pocket Madness event on January 17th.

When the room filled with players hoping to compete in the event, tournament director Tres Kane made the decision to open the field to more than the usual sixteen player limit. With that restriction relaxed, a field of 22 players paid their entry fee to play.

Frost and Bernie Pettipiece made their way through the winners side and faced off for the hot-seat, which was won by Frost 2-1.

Paul Feltman Jr was making waves on the one loss side. After a third round loss to Frost, Feltman scored wins over Tyson Cole, Bret Huth and Pettipiece to earn a shot at Frost in the finals.

The finals were more Frost domination though, as he won the extended match 3-1 for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Scott Frost $300 4th Bret Huth $1202nd Paul Feltman Jr $220 5th Tyson Cole $403rd Bernie Pettipiece $160 5th Bobby Emmons $40

Scott took one short detour on his way to the winner’s circle, when he lost the hot-seat match to Bruce Hirose 2-0.

Scott dropped his first game to regular nemesis Burt Balancad on the one loss side, but came back to win that match 2-1 and earn a rematch against Hirose in the finals.

The finals went two sets with Ed scoring identical 2-0 wins over Bruce in both sets.

The Mezz West State Tour headed to Phoenix, Arizona for its 9th stop of the season at the beautiful Bull Shooters establishment owned by Mike Bates. Mike and his staff worked tirelessly all weekend to accommodate the 87 player who convened to this legendary room with 43 tables of all types. Players from all over the west coast and along with several international stars in attendance, the crowd was not disappointed to a world class demonstration of 9 ball. The top half of the bracket was led by one pocket specialist and high stakes action player Scott Frost. Frost had a strong support group as he played some high powered 9 ball defeating Danny Gokhul, Tommy Tokoph, Bobby Emmons, Chuck Evans, and finally Beau Runningen to play for the hot seat. Meanwhile, leading the bottom half of the bracket was Hungarian Attila Bez-dan. Attila is in the United States on a sports visa with road partner and best friend Vilmos Foldes to play on the Mezz West State Tour. The always jovial Attila had some solid play with wins over Jason Gilbert, Brian Begay, Mitch Ellerman, and Vilmos Foldes to get the chance to play Scott Frost for the hot seat. After a very impressive start, the young Hungarian allowed Frost into the match with some errors and Frost took full advantage. After some fortunate rolls on behalf of Attila, he capitalized on his fortune with intelligent safes and pocketing sending the “Freezer” to the west side of the bracket. On the one loss side Vilmos Foldes awaited Scott Frost after two very hard fought victories over Oscar Dominguez and Beau Runningen. Frost jokingly told Attila he would “double dip” him in the finals but Vilmos was quick to say he wouldn’t be playing in the finals. The friendly trash talk was the perfect backdrop to what became an incredible match by Foldes and Frost. Having only the 7 and 9 ball left in the hill hill game, Frost left himself a bit too straight and tried to punch the ball over for position on the 9. This caused the 7 ball to jaw in the hole leaving Foldes a hanging 7 and routine 9. A poor position play on the 9 left Foldes a predicament of back cutting the 9 or firing cross side which Vilmos shot at warp speed making it and sealing Frost’s fate in the hill hill game. The all Hungarian final was played out with Attila winning his first event ever on the Mezz West State Tour. The MWST would like to thank their sponsors for their continuous support of bringing pool back to the west coast. In addition, a very special thank you to “Fast” Lenny Marshall for donating his time and hard work for the Live stream-ing. Also a congrats to Tina Hess for being the top female finisher and receiving $100 bonus. Sutherland/Bishop Split 9’s & Under

Evans Bishop and Ben Sutherland faced off once at Skip & Jan’s 9’s and Under 9-ball event on January 24th, and decided that was enough.

The first (and only) matchup between these two players was for the hot-seat, and went Evan’s way 7-2.

On the one loss side, Brad Johnson and Skyler Flaherty were facing off for 3rd/4th place. This match was all Brad Johnson, as he scored a 7-0 win.

Brad was on the other end of a lopsided scoreline in the semi-finals, as Ben turned the tide and beat Brad 7-2.

Bishop & Sutherland then decided that one meeting was enough, and they agreed to split first and second place.

Complete Payouts:1st Evans Bishop $3921st Ben Sutherland $3923rd Brad Johnson $1204th Skyler Flaherty $55

Succo & Pulley split at Skip & Jans

Jaye Succo turned in a dominating performance and split first and second place with Amanda Pulley at Skip & Jan’s Ladies 8’s & Under tournament on January 24th.

Succo and Lynor Johnson navigated the field of 20 players to face off for the hot-seat, which Succo won with a 5-0 score line.

Meanwhile, Veronica Poore was eliminating Jesse Gardella 4-3 on the left side of the board. Next up, Poore sent Sara Miller to the seats with a 5-3 victory.

Poore’s run would then end, as Pulley scored a 5-1 victory in the next match. That would not be the end of Pulley’s strong play though, as she then went on to eliminate Johnson 5-0 and then beat Succo 5-0 in the first set of the finals. Both Succo and Pulley were willing to play a second set, but the hour was late and a coin was flipped to decide whether to play or split. The coin landed on “split” and the players split 1st and 2nd.

Complete Payouts:1st Jaye Succo $317 4th Veronica Poore $601st Amanda Pulley $317 5th Sara Miller $203rd Lynor Johnson $100 5th Jesse Gardella $20

American Rotation in Arizona?Joe Tucker is looking to bring his American Rota-tion game to Arizona. He needs ten players to com-mit to one night a week for nine weeks at one room, playing this exciting ndew game.

Condensed Rules for American Rotation

In American Rotation balls are shot in rotation similar to traditional 9 ball or 10 ball but all balls are worth points, balls 1-10 are worth 1 point each and balls 11-15 or worth 2 points each. There are 20 points available for each rack and players will com-pete to a certain number for the match, 100 points, 140 points, 200 points, etc. (ABC weekly matches are to 140 points)

Basic rules of playAmerican Rotation calls for players to rack their own, alternate the break and the breaking player re-ceives cue ball in hand immediately after each break whether they sink a ball or not and even if they foul. . Racking order; 15 up front, 2-3 behind 15, 1 in the middle, 13-14 behind it.

We are playing call ball & pocket and call safety. This means that if a player calls a shot to a pocket and misses the incoming player can make them shoot again from the current position. If a player misses the called pocket but sinks a ball anyways the incoming player has the option to take the shot AND the points for balls pocketed or give the shot AND the points back to the shooter.

If a player calls a safety you may not make them shoot again and you must accept the current posi-tion, unless they pocketed a ball in which case you will have the option to make them shoot again, whoever shoots the next shot will receive the points for the ball or balls pocketed.

Jump shots are allowed but must be executed with full length playing cue only, not break cue or jump cue.

Points scored during a foul will go to the opponent. Scratch on the break and your opponent receives points for any balls pocketed.

Once a player reaches the predetermined score of the match he/she wins the match.

3 Consecutive foulsBecause we are playing a per ball point scoring game 3 consecutive fouls is not loss of game or rack. Rather than win the rack the non offending player will receive a free shot and then ball in hand immediately after their free shot. A free shot entitles the shooter to hit ANY ball on the table first and all points scored on a free shot count towards that players score. This rule was implemented due to the occasional benefit of tying up balls rather than attempting a tough kick shot and it provided a nice solution to that situation.

Moving balls fouls?Move any 1 ball prior to shooting, no foul but your opponent has the right to move it back to as close as they believe to where it was. Move 2 or more balls and your opponent can move them back and receive ball in hand. Move any balls during the course of a stroke or shot and that is a foul, opponent can move the ball back and receive ball in hand.

Complete set of rules, score sheets and video matches are available at website www.AmericanRo-tation.com

Scoring app is available at itunes or Google play.

At the end of 9 weeks the top 6 players at each room compete in an in house playoff; 3 vs 6 winner plays the 2 seed and 4 vs 5 winner plays the 1 seed to determine who plays in the finals.

Recommended local payout1st $800 Travel money and free entry into national championship2nd $4003rd 4th $100 each$400 goes into the national prizefund.

The American Billiard Club has not taken $1 from the players and has been paying back on average 120% of what has been taken in. It is their goal to create a self sustaining national tour in which spon-sors pay for the expenses, not the players.

Players interested in playing in the upcoming March session can contact Mike Howerton at 480-251-3452 or Joe Tucker at 508-840-6133.

Congratulations to Harold Lyons, Laura Boothroyd & Francisco Serrano of Fatal Attrac-tion from the Q n Brew in Tempe! After losing their first match they went on an 8-game winning streak including back-to-back wins over Handi-capped to become the 2014 AZPL Fall State Champions!!!! Their journey started with a 5pm start time thanks to their first place finish at the Q n Brew. Their first match was also their first & last loss, losing to Shoot to Moon. After flipping to the loser’s side they ran off victories against Pimpin’ Ain’t Eazy and the Slate Slayers before facing Shoot the Moon a second time. This time they came out on top and continued their run by beating Doc’s Gang, the El Diablos and Chapa Khan to face off against hot seat winner Handi-capped. They went on to defeat them 65-54 as the visiting team followed by a 67-41 win as the home team to take home the Championship and $1650!!! Francisco Serrano was the Champion-ship MVP, going 20-4 while scoring 218 and allowing just 113 points!

The fun began as usual on Friday night at Stinger’s Sports Bar with the Scotch Doubles Singles tournament, 8-Ball Break & Run Derby and the Wild Card tournament. There were 9 teams in the Wild Card tourney and due to last minute cancellations there were 4 spots open in the tournament! The Sandbaggers, Hot Pockets, Hidaway One and the El Diablos came out victo-rious with spots on Saturday! For the El Diablos it was the start of a long 9-2 run.

There were 30 people participating in the 8-Ball Break & Run Derby this season. Out of those 30 it was Darren Bradford finishing in 3rd with 46 points, Harold Lyons in 2nd with 47 and John Ilk in 1st with 54. John won $155 and gets $3 off his weekly dues this season. Harold won $84 and $2 off with Darren taking $1 off each week.

In the Scotch-Doubles/Singles tournament there were 20 teams competing for first place! Regular season Handicapped teammates Calvin Balcom and Darrel Bednarek were paired up in the blind draw event and went on to beat four teams on the way to the hot seat. The last win split up Pete Williams & Darren Bradford who won 3 straight. Now on the singles side Darren beat regular season teammate Eugene Hemphill to set up the rematch but Pete lost to JR Jiron who just won 4 in a row as a single. Now it was Darren & JR to face Calvin & Darrel. JR & Darren defeated them 4 times to take 1st place and $300! 2nd place and $200 went to Calvin & Darrel. Pete Williams and Eugene Hemphill played a race to 2 for 3rd place with Eugene winning twice for $100!

On Saturday 8 teams started play at 9am. Of those 8 none went farther than the El Diablos who had a 4-game winning streak on the win-ner’s side followed by a 5-match streak to finish in 4th place, highest of all the Wild Card teams. Scott Gwilliam went 24-8 while scoring 284 points with 5 30s for the Diablos. The 5-game winning streak was tied by Side Pocket who

rattled off 5 straight wins before calling it a night. There were 32 teams overall in the tourney and there were highlights everywhere! LMF won 4 games in a row! JR Jiron’s 20-game winning streak came to a close by an 8-ball break! Calvin Balcom & Harold Lyons both had a pair of 8-ball breaks during the tourney. Eu-gene Hemphill of Shoot the Moon went 10-4 with 113 points scored to move into 1st All-Time in tournament Power Rating! He also went from 9th to 7th in all-time points scored! Chris Negrin went 10-3 with 112 points scored to jump from 9th to 7th All-Time! Ryan Levengood went 22-10 to move into the top ten finish-ing 10th All-Time in PR! Laura Boothroyd moved into 3rd All-Time for the ladies in PR winning 9 games & scoring 170 points. The points moved her from 6th to 4th all-time! Her 9 wins moved her into 3rd All-Time in wins! Lynda Niichel moved from 10th to 8th in PR and finished 9th all-time in points while winning 7 and scoring 116. Tara Negrin finished the day in 9th in PR and 7th in wins after winning 7 and scoring 111. She also moved up a notch to 6th all-time in points. Dawn Atokuku passed Michael Kerin as the All-Time points leader after scoring 205 points and wins while going 16-10! Doc Rogers moved into the top 10 tied with Jim Green at 1,257 scored! Arnold Shiplett, Phil Anderson & Gary Wimmer scored their 1,000th tournament point!

Eight teams returned on Sunday with Handicapped riding a 4-game winning streak. After extending that to 5 with a win over Chapa Khan the team of Calvin Balcom, Darrel Bednarek & Dwayne Beagle waited for their opponent. On the other side of the bracket Side Pocket came in riding that 5-game streak only to have it snapped by The El Diablos who with the win extended their own streak eventually to 5! Shoot the Moon went 0-2 on Sunday to finish in 8th place win-ning $257! Side Pocket finished in 7th with $243! Out of five teams from Globe Derailed was the only one to make it to Sunday and promptly ran into the El Diablos

who knocked them out of the bracket to face Doc’s Gang, who lost to Fatal Attraction, in a battle for 5th place. It was a one-two punch that knocked Derailed off the tracks and back to Globe with a 6th place finish and $200! Doc’s Gang finished in 5th with $522! Next up was The El Diablos at Fa-tal Attraction in a battle for 4th place. After taking a 44-32 lead after 5 games Harold Lyon stunned them with an 8-ball break to bring it within a point! After that it was Fatal Attraction who went on a 30-18 run to win 73-62! The Diablos won $398 for 4th. Up next was Chapa Khan! In the opening round it was all about the Khan as they dominated 28-10 and 38-15 after 4 but that was it as a couple of 8-ball breaks brought it within a point again! They won the next 2 by a score of 20-9 to take the win and advance to the next round! Chapa Khan took 3rd and $718!

Championship Match - Handicapped Vs Fatal Attraction. After two rounds it was 51-34 for Fatal. Handicapped won the next two but it wasn’t enough as they lost the first match 65-54 in 8 games. In the second match it was déjà vu all over again, especially for Calvin & Darrel who lost twice from the hot seat in the Scotch Doubles, as Fatal Attraction won 6 of 7 to take a 67-41 7-game victory over Handicapped! Handicapped took home $856 while Fatal Attraction took the top prize of $1650!!

I’d like to thank everyone who came out and par-ticipated this weekend! As always it’s great to see everyone! Kinda like a reunion 3 times a year. ;) Thanks to Stinger’s for being a great host! To all the staff who did a great job, especially Michelle! Thanks to Chrissy & Jen who both did an awesome job running the table!

APA Tri Cities WinnersAPA Phoenix Metro held its session ending fall 8 Ball and 9 Ball Tri-Cities tournaments last month at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. 48 teams in all from all over Maricopa County showed up for 2 week-ends to compete for a chance to play in Las Vegas this coming August at the APA National Team Championships. 12 teams from these tournaments will advance to the year-end ‘Cities’ tournament in June. APA’s ‘Road to Vegas’ tournament series will ultimately produce 4 Eight Ball teams and 2 Nine Ball teams that will have a paid trip to Las Vegas to compete in the ‘World’s Largest Pool Tournament’. The APA National Team Championships are held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino every August and are listed in the Guiness book of world records as the largest pool tournament in the world. This event was the 2nd of 3 tournaments held a year and the first step in the year long “Road To Vegas “series. One more similar event will be held next May that

will produce another 12 teams for the second step in the series, the Cities event. During the Cities event to be held in June, a total of 24 Eight Ball and 12 Nine Ball teams will compete for those 6 important paid slots to play in Vegas.

Other events in our ‘Road to Vegas’ series include a tournament for the Ladies Only division, which will send one of the 3 person ladies teams, a Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles team, several 8 ball and 9 ball doubles teams, and two Masters teams. All teams earning their spot to Vegas are given a travel assistance, a paid room while they are participating in their event and a paid entry into their event.

APA teams consist of 5 to 8 Players of all different skill levels and age groups. The great thing about the APA pool league is that each team must have as many beginner players as they have good players.

Teams are structured in such a way that the lower skilled players are just as important to a team as the higher level players. In fact, many teams that play APA are family teams. Gina Nowlin, the league op-erator for the phoenix and Maricopa County APA, says ‘We have teams that consist of the Mom, Dad, kids and grandkids’. These families use their pool night out for some ‘good ole family bonding’, she said. The handicapped league insures that all play-ers, no matter what their skill level, have an equal chance of winning. The APA’s Equalizer Handicap System is the fairest handicapping system avail-able.

Everyone played well, had fun and we watched some great matches played. Congratulations to all the winning teams and all the teams that attended the tournament you were among some of the best teams we have.

APA Phoenix Metro held its Spring Session Captain’s Tournament on Jan 25th at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. 43 players showed up to represent their teams and play for the honor of having their name on the wall at Main Street Billiards to go along with the trophy and cash. Evan Brinkman, who plays out of the Q & Brew in Tempe took home the 1st place trophy and $325 in cash. Evan was ranked as one of the top players in this handicap seeded tournament. He played exceptionally well fending off some very strong players that had their eye on the 1st place prize. Some of APA’s finest players came out for a great day of quality competition and fun. Several of APA’s lower ranked players had a great outing placing in the top 8 spots, proving that the Equalizer Handicap System that APA uses al-lows everyone a chance to win.

The Captains tournament is held each session at Main Street Billiards and is a tournament that was created to show appreciation for captains in the APA. Gina Nowlin and her husband Doug Nowlin are the APA league operators in the Phoenix area. Gina says the captains are the players that are the most valuable person on a team. They are the ones that keep things organized and flowing smoothly on league nights. They have a lot of responsibility and we just want to show them some appreciation. This tournament has become very popular and has grown each session since it began 2 years ago.

We would like to congratulate the following winners and thank everyone for making the tournament such a success.

1st Place - $325 – Evan Brinkman2nd Place - $200 - Marc Underwood3rd Place - $80 each - Carey Nolan and Eric Olivieri4th Place - $40 each - David McGuire, Mark Klein, Bob Rhoades and Tom Reed

We would also like to thank Thor and his staff at Main Street Billiards for host-ing this tournament each session. They always take good care of the players.

Dead Money

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

When I played the Mezz tournament stop this last month at Bull shooters in Phoenix Arizona, I felt like dead money. I almost did not waste my time and money on the event since I really have not had much time to practice. I did not go into the event with confidence in my game. My support system encouraged me to play anyway and my first match was against a local champi-on. Now I could have let me negative thoughts take over but instead I just played the table and if he did make a mistake I tried to take advan-tage of them.

This has been a real problem for me. Even if a champion misses at the 7 ball, my nervousness would not let me perform from even a 3 ball out and I know I can get out from the 7 ball. This problem would have me being beat 7 to1 or 7 to 0. When I did execute on the opportuni-ties given, my final score ended up four games, which was a great match for myself and built a little more confidence.

You have heard all the saying “you cannot win if you don’t play”. Pool is a weird game and we all have seen a player in a match that looks as if they will not miss another ball for the rest of the tournament and then the next match the wheels fall off. A great player once told me

years ago “it’s not who you play it’s when you play them”.

I took the liberty of cutting and pasting a post off Facebook from Oscar Dominguez. “When I was younger, I used to chase him down to play cheap 50 dollar “donation” sets. Everybody thought I was stupid literally giving him my money. But I learned. It’s always great compet-ing alongside Efren Bata Reyes”.

I have always believed by playing better play-ers, you will improve faster. However, I am not saying “bet the house payment” or “play some-one 10 times better than you do”. Try to find an opponent a couple of levels or balls better.

Finally, all my research has concluded that it is ok to be dead money and use it as a learning tool to advance your game.

Class

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

In my last article I talked about pool etiquette. I listed a few specific things that some players do that most other players consider to be rude and distracting. I then wrapped the article up by saying there were many more things that could be mentioned and that I might delve into a few more of them in my next (this) article.

Well, I lied. I didn’t lie about there being many more things that could be mentioned, mind you, but I lied about dwelling on that subject any more. Instead, I’ve decided to ex-plore a subject that influences the use of good etiquette. That new subject would be: class.

I saw an image of a wall poster and slogan on Facebook the other day that said, “being a good player is not enough, be a good person.” That slogan got me to thinking: how many of our good players are really good people?

As in any other sport, newcomers and low-skilled players in pool have a tendency to be in awe of the highly skilled players in the game. They become curious as to who plays best in their poolroom, then in their league, then in their city, then in their state, then in their coun-try, and then in the world. They want to learn the “pecking order” in pool. And as they (the newcomers) continue to work on their own

games, they also continue to build their respect and admiration for better players, particularly pro players. But eventually, a truth begins to come to light.

Being labeled a “pro” is the pinnacle of accom-plishment in any sport. The benefits of being a pro are supposed to be: 1) the ability to make a living at the game, 2) being recognized, and 3) gaining respect.

Now I know there are some pro and semi-pro players out there who would argue that they care nothing about recognition, they only care about making money. While that may sound noble, it is seldom true. Most all of the really good players develop really big egos. It’s not all their fault, however, because the aforemen-tioned respect and admiration shown by the lower skilled players helps build those egos. But with these big egos comes the desire to be recognized and respected by more than just lower skilled players; they want to be rec-ognized by the media. Why? Because with media recognition comes more business oppor-tunities: like sponsorship deals, and invitations to participate in prestigious events such as the Mosconi Cup. Oh, and media recognition feels good, too.

The problem comes in when pro players fail to control their egos. They allow their egos to expand and become too fragile, much like big soap bubbles. Then, with their fragile egos, things sometimes happen that easily set those players off and they explode. An ego explo-sion is not good thing. These players need to realize that they had no right to develop big egos in the first place because: 1) Players are unable to make a decent living by merely playing pool. 2) No one outside of pool circles knows who they are. 3) No one outside of pool circles cares what they can do on a pool table. 4) These players show no respect or consid-eration for the few people who are willing to show them unearned respect and admiration: the newcomers and lower-skilled players (their only fans).

Now that’s not to say that all great players are like that. A few of them have managed to con-trol their egos to the point that they really can’t be called egos. You could better describe their psyche as a healthy self-esteem. They play their game and live their life with confidence. They do not suffer from insecurities. They are humble. They are considerate and respect-ful of others. They are complimentary of their peers. They are appreciative of their fans.

From My Side Of The Table (A Letter to the editor from Alex Hathcock)

During a recent Scotch Doubles tournament, I asked if we were playing BCA Rules? I was told, yes we are. As it turns out, the tournament director (and other players) did not know the rules, and therefore could not enforce them. I normal-ly have the small version of the rule book with me, but had lent it out, so I could not prove my point. The rule in question can be found in the BCA rule book, Rules Section #1, General Rules, Rule # 1.14 You must rack for yourself when you are breaking. (Which also applies to Scotch Doubles.) After the match, our opponents not observing this rule. A long time valley player asked me what was up? After explaining the situation to him, he replied “You’ll never get them to change Al” Well somebody has to do it! It starts here, league operators, tournament direc-tors, team captains and “ALL PLAYERS”. Having been a league player and captain for 25 years and counting, I’ve always expressed the need to read and understand the rules. If we are going to encour-age the Junior players our love of the sport, I feel we must first teach them the General Rules, and how to play as a “Gentleman”. It’s no wonder as to the lack of participation. As many of us don’t want to deal with all the rules, we don’t play by those rules, the hustlin’, the sharking, the bragging, the hostility towards those that aren’t “In the clique”. I came to have a good time, to play like a gentleman, to play by the rules, to call fouls on myself, to give it my all! So I’m calling the rest of you out, to please do the same. I have many other thoughts and concerns about this, (does the noise inside my head bother you?) but that’s enough for now. Thank you for your time, Alex

(Roger Long Column continued from page 21)

They appreciate their sponsors and treat them fairly. They do not break rules. They do not shark their opponents. They do not argue refs’ deci-sions. (As a matter of fact, in the absence of a ref, they will be the first to call a foul on themselves.) They do not boast. They do not attack their critics. They do not feel the need to always call attention to themselves. And they do not always try to turn every conversation back to them-selves. These players are special players, and they possess a trait that can only be termed as: class.

In the end, it’s not the best player who earns true respect; it’s the best person – the person with class. People and players who exhibit class are always the ones who earn lasting admiration and respect. And the “respect” shown to a great player who possesses no class is limited to a respect for that person’s game, only. Respect for that person’s charac-ter will be missing. And what might mistakenly appear to some to be a respect for that person’s character will actually be nothing more than a practiced tolerance for that person’s rude behavior.

Do you have class?

Foos PulseFoosball News

By Jim King

Hello again, Phoenix Foosers! Arizona Foos-ball activity is reaching a deafening crescendo even as I pull up my chair and hunker down to bring you this month’s update. So let’s get to it!

LEAGUE

There are only two weeks remaining in the 2014-2015 Arizona Foosball Fall/Winter League and several teams from both confer-ences are striving to secure one of four playoff positions with the intent of playing in Foos Bowl XIII on February 21st. The Steve Mat-thews Band, in the Western conference, is cur-rently dead even with Boobs and Balls in first place, while holding onto a one game lead over I Felt It Go In. All three teams have currently locked up wild card berths while two teams, Foos Brothers and The Yahoos, will be striving to secure the final spot. The Eastern confer-ence has two teams, T.G.A and The European Connection filling the top spot and both finish the season with half of their remaining matches against teams still vying to reach the playoffs. That’s What She Said and Abusement Park are only one game back while The Walking Dead-bar is one game back from them. However, it should be noted that The European Connec-tion is also riding a four game win streak and they currently possess ‘the hottest team in the league’ moniker.

As a side note, I’d like to point out that my earlier season ending playoff predictions are still capable of being met…woo-hoo! Out of the top four Eastern teams predicted to reach the playoffs, three of them are currently tied for first or second and the fourth team is two games back. The Western division also has three of the four predicted teams in the top four positions; however I totally missed the success of Boobs and Balls which are tied for first in addition to The Steve Matthews Band, which was picked to finish fourth but, as mentioned above, is also tied for first. Everyone is ex-pecting the final two weeks to be extremely competitive and downright cutthroat when you factor in that handicaps have been frozen to players’ season averages after this week’s matches.

PHOENIX TOUR

The Phoenix Tour is an ongoing event where players compete at events around the Phoenix area and are rated for overall performance dur-ing a three month stretch of tournaments. To date, there have been 81 contestants vying for two main prizes, one for the overall champion, and another for the highest placing rookie. Each earns the right to wear a championship jacket embroidered with their names and dates of the title, and the overall champion also col-lects a $100 bonus.

The tour’s inaugural season will be coming to an end January 31st at Stinger’s Sports Bar (one of three great foosball venues sponsor-ing tour events), and promises to be a fun time with an exciting finish. Currently, expert Brian Hendricks is the overall leader with 228 points. Holly Minnig, although a rookie, had briefly taken over the top spot but dropped to second with 208 points, and still leads all rookies. Adrienne “Age” McCormack, with 201 points, is in third place for the overall title and in sec-ond place in the rookie category. Brian Salke, currently in fourth, is 32 points behind Hen-dricks and is far from rookie material. Both title winners will be determined over the next two weeks and are almost guaranteed to come out of the four above mentioned foosers.

The latest tour standings can always be found by visiting the ArizonaFoosball.com website and clicking on the “Tournaments” link in the main menu. There you will find a chart dis-playing point distributions for all players in the current tour session, player classifications and rankings, results of all events, and the current leaders in each category.

Since not everyone can play in each of the three weekly tournaments used to determine the tour champions, some have asked to see how they measure up based upon average score alone. While this is a reasonable and natural inquiry, bear in mind that the popularity of the Phoenix Tour owes its success, in large part, to its unique ability to build and unite the player base by offering an exciting vehicle to compete with and measure performance against players from all over the valley, creating incentive to visit multiple venues and mix it up with the en-

tire player base. Hence, the reason the stand-ings reflect not only player performance but dedication as well. Tour winners are veritable “foosball warriors”!

For more comprehensive individual statistics each and every player should be logging into our site, arizonafoosball.com, clicking on Tournaments on the left side, and then click-ing ‘View My Stats’ on the right side under Point Awards. You’ll find the following awe-some charts/graphs that were developed by Bill Nolan.

• Scoring Trend• Performance by Venue• Points by Venue• Performance by Event Type• Points by Event Type• Performance by Teammate

Each one of these metrics has been totally per-sonalized and lets you know how you’re per-forming. You can easily tell how you’re doing against the Tour average, where you play your best, which events you perform the best in, and how well you perform with each of your part-ners during the Tour. There’s no reason why everyone shouldn’t be logging in to use this information to your advantage. Check it out!

ETC.

For any new or returning players interested in all the great foosball action taking place in the valley, just pay a visit to www.arizonafoosball.com - you’ll be surprised at what you’ve been missing, and you’ll be out on the tables in no time!

Please ensure you check out next month’s Foos Pulse as we’ll have more information on the very popular annual $3,000 Las Vegas Warm-up tournament being sponsored by Jester’s Billiards February 27 - March 1. In addition, we’ll start a new series that is sure to enlighten every fooser on some aspect of the game. Here’s a very obscure hint… 1923. And…no…that’s not the year I was born or the number of tournaments I’ve played in. Keep on foosin!
