Consult the Synagogue Directory on page6, call or visit the websites for exact times of Purimfun at each congregation.

Jewish communitiesaround the world cel-

ebrate Purim as a holi-day of feasting andgladness, revelry andimbibing and gift-givingand tzedakah (charity). It is one of the mostpopular Jewish holidaysfor families and chil-dren. The celebration ofPurim is based on thestory found in the bibli-cal Book of Esther. Atractate of the Mishnahand the Talmud are de-voted to it as well.

Jewish CommunityPartnership Annual Campaign Purim is a time for usto support our commu-nity and one another. As we reflect onPurim and listen to thereading of the MegillatEsther, the Book of Es-ther, we should takesome time to do a littlereflecting on our com-munity. The Book of Es-ther is the only book of the Tanach (HebrewBible) that does not mention G-d. This teachesus that it is our duty to make a difference in ourworld and in our community. We must do whatis necessary to take care of our community justlike Esther did for her community. We are alsoreminded on Purim to be proud to be Jewish. Weare reminded that while living in a Diaspora com-munity we should be proud to support our com-munity, here, in Israel and around the world. Bymaking a donation to the Jewish Federation’s An-nual Campaign, you are expressing your pride inbeing Jewish and your pride in being a memberof this community. Please take this opportunityduring Purim to make your Jewish Federation An-nual Campaign pledge by visiting our websitewww.jewishlongbeach.org or calling our officeat 562-426-7601. Another way that we help those who are lessfortunate than ourselves during Purim is in the tra-dition of sending Mishloah Manot (Purim bas-kets/treats to others). The Book of Estherexplains this tradition “as days of feasting andgladness, and sending portions of food to oneanother, and gifts to the poor" (9:22). There aretwo ways that you can fulfill this mitzvah (com-mandment) during this year’s Purim. You canmake your Jewish Federation Annual Campaignpledge to help support the Jewish Community

Partnership Agencies and you can bring cannedgoods and other non-perishable food items to theAlpert JCC during the month of March that willbe delivered to Centro Shalom and people whoneed it.

Community Wide Purim Carnival Purim is also a good time to gather with fellowcommunity members to celebrate the community’sstrength. We will gather together as a communityto celebrate Purim at The Long Beach CommunityPurim Carnival on Sunday, March 11, 2012 from11:30 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. at the Alpert JewishCommunity Center. Many organizations in thecommunity are coming together to put on the car-nival including: Alpert JCC, Jewish Federation ofGreater Long Beach and West OC, Jewish Fam-ily and Children's Service of Long Beach, BeachHillel, Congregation Shir Chadash, Temple BethShalom, Hebrew Academy, Temple Israel, Shulby the Shore, and Congregation Sholom LeisureWorld.eeeeThe carnival will feature all kinds of family-friendly activities including a Moon Bounce, aJousting game, face painting, holiday crafts, cos-tume parade, Hamantaschen Hop (cake walk)and a pre-school area with games and prizes.eeeThere will also be a Mezuzah auction thatwill showcase both standard Mezuzah cases

Synagogue Directory

The Rabbis long agomade a curious comment:‘In the messianic end of daysit will no longer be neces-sary to celebrate Shabbat orthe High Holy Days. Buteven then, the Jews will con-tinue to observe Purim.’ So, why Purim? The Bookof Esther tells the story of abuffoon of a king of Persia, who in a moment of drunken-ness and at the misogynisticurging of his advisors, de-thrones his queen for refusingto debase herself dancingbefore his inebriated guests.Ahasueros, the buffoon, isnow in need of a newqueen. So he calls for all theavailable maidens in his em-pire to parade in front of himso that he can select themost beautiful one to be hismate. This turns out to be Es-ther, a Jewish young womanbeing raised by her oldercousin, Mordecai. Mordecaiadvises Esther to keep herJewishness a secret from theking (presumably to protectagainst anti-Semitism in theroyal court). In the meantime, twominor events occur involvingMordecai, which becomemajor factors in the ensuingdrama: Mordecai overhearstwo men plotting against theking, reports their plan andthus saves the king’s life; and

Mordecai refuses to bowdown to the king’s egomani-acal Grand Vizier, Haman, because Jews only bowdown to God (which, by theway, wasn’t always true –Jews historically have fre-quently bowed in respect toroyalty . . . but that’s irrele-vant). As the story unfolds,Haman – angry overMordecai having bruised hisstarving ego – tricks Aha-sueros into permitting him tokill all of the Jews. Ahasueroslearns one sleepless night, when he has the royalrecords read to him, thatMordecai had earlier savedhis life! Asking Haman howhe, the king, should show ap-preciation to a loyal subject(Haman thought the kingwas referring to him), Hamanadvised Ahasueros to have arespected member of theroyal court walk the loyalsubject around the capitoland sing his praises. The kingthen ordered Haman to doso . . . for Mordecai! Thiswas, of course, a foreshad-owing of Haman’s demise atthe hands (indirectly) ofMordecai. The wicked anti-Semite islater outwitted by Morde-cai’s cousin Esther, who re-veals her Jewish identity toher husband and, thus, her

vulnerability to death as a re-sult of Haman’s plan to killall of Mordecai’s coreligion-ists. Enraged that Hamanwould harm his now-favoritewife, Ahasueros has Hamanand his sons executed.Mordecai secures the king’spermission to allow the Jewsto defend themselves, andthey do so to a frankly em-barrassing degree of suc-cess (something which wedon’t really go into in Reli-gious School). The End. So, what is it about thisstory that makes the celebra-tion of Purim an eternal ob-servance? We know thatthe incidents depicted aren’thistorical. There may be allu-sions to historical people, butthe story itself is not actualhistory. I believe that the rea-son Purim is so dear to ourhearts is actually that it isn’tfactual. The Book of Esther isa farce. It delightfully demon-strates how pathologicallydriven some people can be(Haman) who seek thedownfall of the Jews, andhow incredibly foolish someleaders are (Ahasueros), totheir own and their people’sdetriment. It provides a sur-prising – maybe even shock-ing – example of when itmay be wise to downplayour separation from othergroups in society, so long as

we proudlyemphasizeour unique-ness whenit reallymatters (both Mordecai andEsther). Most of all, Purim-provides us with a grand op-portunity to be completelysilly, which simply is a lot offun. We wear costumes, weenact the Purim story in exag-geratedly farcical plays, andin some circles – I don’t rec-ommend this – we drink in amanner that makes us resem-ble Ahasueros more thanMordecai. Now that’s very, very silly! So even in the end ofdays, when the world will beperfected in messianicpeace, there will still be op-portunities to laugh, enjoyand celebrate. But why wait? We canall laugh, enjoy and cele-brate this month! DuringPurim! Chag Purim samie’ach!Happy Purim!

This delightful story of Purim isa reprint from the March 2011issue of the Chronicle.

Five Beach Hillel studentsembarked on a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip with otherHillel students from SouthernCalifornia on December 21,2011. The Beach Hillel stu-dents bonded as a groupprior to the trip throughpreparatory meetings leadby Rabbi Drew Kaplan. Theylearned about Israeli cultureand history and what to ex-pect while traveling in the for-eign country. One partici-pant, Eric Sandler, gives adetailed account of his expe-riences: One of the highlights of visit-ing Israel for me was our visitto Tzfat. We entered the cityunder cloud cover and somerain similar to that at MountBental and learned shortly thatit was here that many

Spaniards had fled to after thefull spread of the Spanish In-quisition within Spain in the late15th century and here as wellthat a center of Kabbalah, ofJewish mysticism, would cometo be established. Given mypursuit of immersion in theSpanish language and cultureand previous brief trip toSpain, the city of Tzfat and visitthere to a Sephardic orthodoxsynagogue where a Torahscroll laid from Spain circa1492 were particularly mean-ingful to me. Moreover, it wasneat to be able to finally meetthe Israeli soldiers with whomwe would be spending the nextfew days during the mifgashactivity, and the Yemenitelahuhe, a sort of pita wrap withmellawach fried bread, sev-eral cheeses (such as balady,

a soft, white cheese), zåatar (acondiment made from one ofseveral dried herbs, sesameseeds, dried sumac, salt, etc.),olive oil, eggs, tomato, andshoog (a special sauce) wasabsolutely scrumptious. It wasneat as well to learn of LivnotU’Lehibanot’s offering of sub-sidized post-Birthright experi-ences with volunteering, hiking, seminars, and workshops;though I decided to comehome after the Birthright triprather than immediately pursueLivnot U’Lehibanot’s 1 weekpost- Birthright program, per-haps I may come back some-time for one of their 3-5 weekprograms. Participating in the drum cir-cles at the Bedouin tent and atan overlook of Jerusalem thatwas our introduction to the citywas also an extraordinary ex-perience. As I had previouslytaken an African Dance Stylesclass, I felt greatly animated bythe sound of the djembe drumsplayed and enjoyed using theAfrican dance steps I hadlearned to dance in the middleof both circles alongside Alli-son, Riddle, Zachary, and oth-ers as well as dancing in aHora-like fashion while holdinghands with everyone else dur-ing part of the drum circle in

Jerusalem. Moreover, it wasmagnificent to see the grandcityscape of Jerusalem darkenas we sang the Shehechiyanuprayer (used to celebrate spe-cial occasions, which this mostdefinitely was), praised G-d forbeing creator of the fruit of thevine, and danced in a spirit oftogetherness and harmony. By traveling to Israel, I ex-ceeded my expectations ingaining a deeper sense ofJewish identity; came to moregreatly recognize the relation-ship between as well as en-hance my own personalconnection to Judaism, Israel, and earth-centered philoso-phies; and had some great ad-ventures with newfound friends. In these ways, the Taglit-Birthright Israel Hillel trip hasallowed me a new beginningtowards pursuit of interactionwith Judaism and Israel. It hasgiven me knowledge and inspi-ration to reinvigorate my inter-action with Hillel, share myamazing Birthright experiencewith others, keep up to datewith that which is happening inIsrael, improve my Hebrewreading comprehension, eatmore Israeli and Mediter-ranean food, and keep intouch with my fellow Birthrighttrip participants.

Visionary Awards Dinner

Beverly & Robert Cohen Shelly & Shmuel Newman Sybil & Dr. Marc Tamaroff

More than 250 guests willjoin the Hebrew Academythis year on Sunday, March4 at the beautiful Four Sea-sons Hotel in Los Angeles tohonor Robert and BeverlyCohen with the LifetimeAchievement Award, Shmueland Shelly Newman with theYoung Leadership Award, and Dr. Marc and SybilTamaroff with the Partners inEducation Award. The evening will be hostedby television personality ElonGold with entertainment by

film celebrity and comedianLarry Miller. The VisionaryDinner is the Hebrew Acad-emy’s major fundraisingevent; the signature eveningof the year. All are welcometo join as Jewish educationand continuity is celebrated. Honorees Robert andBeverly Cohen have beenpartners in life and in busi-ness for close to 60 years. The monumental enterprise oftheir lives has been the devel-opment of the Four SeasonsHotel in Beverly Hills. How-ever, the real passions oftheir lives are their three chil-dren, Ernie (Amy), EledaCohen and Michelle (Jeff)Lerman and their ten grand-children. All great achievers, these children fill their parentswith pride and pleasure. Honorees Shmuel andShelly Newman have been aforce in promoting local Jew-ish education for nearly adecade. Shelly creditsShmueli’s ability to think out-side the box as an importantleadership tool. H. A. andthe surrounding Communitywere inspired by the idea ofparticipating in the Facebookbased Kohls Cares contestbecoming one of twentyschools to gain enough votesto receive funds. They arehumbled by being honored, preferring to promote successand education for the com-munity rather than as individ-uals. Honorees Dr. Marc and

Sybil Tamaroff are very flat-tered and overwhelmed bythis honor. Dr. Marc Tamaroffgrew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where his dad and grandfa-ther began a scrap metalbusiness. Sybil was born inLos Angeles but raised inFontana where her parents, both Holocaust survivors, owned an egg ranch. Theirpaths crossed at UCLA,where they met, fell in loveand married in 1978. In1980, Marc began his pri-vate medical practice in LongBeach. There they made theirlife-long connection withother Jewish couples andyoung parents at the LongBeach JCC. As their involve-ment grew, Marc became amember of the Center'sBoard of Directors. In 2001,he was elected as President. He completed his tenure onthe Board in 2005 and in2010, joined the Board of Di-rectors of the Hebrew Acad-emy. Sybil, too, was involvedas a volunteer at the JCC inLong Beach, including actingas co-chair for the HolocaustRemembrance event. Shealso served on the Board ofTrustees at Temple BethDavid in Westminster. All ofthese have been wonderfuland fulfilling experiences. Also in Long Beachthrough the 70’s and into the80’s, Roberta served as aprogram specialist for Or-ange County Mental Healthagency, focusing on trainingfirst responders in providingbenefit, care, and treatment torape victims. However, many of ourChronicle readers will remem-ber Roberta from her time as

the Director of the Women’sDivision for the Jewish Feder-ation of Greater Long Beach& West Orange County. Herexuberance and passion forthe Federation’s mission wasevident in her work and in thefact that many of the womenin our community maintainedtheir connection to Robertalong after she moved toSacramento in 1989. In Sacramento, Robertadistinguished herself as a self-less, giving & caring person inboth her professional and per-sonal life. Roberta servedher synagogue community, the Women for Reform Ju-daism, her students at Na-tional University, her privatetherapy clients, the local B-
