A fabulous place to visit when you go to Merritt Island in Titusville, Fl is the BlueHeron Water Reclamation Facility off I-95. http://www.titusville.com/Page.asp?
NavID=901
Sharon and JVO Weaver were treated to a Sandhill Crane Courting Ritual late
one afternoon in the fall at this lovely well maintained facility.
The cranes demonstrated their own Olympic sport of synchronized courtship amere three feet away. They dipped and flapped and threw clumps of grass inthe air and then leapt in the air and stood up tall and shouted, I am bird, hear
me roar. After gazing across the lake making harmonious calls for a few min-utes the birds took flight.
What a remarkable sight to witness! Isn’t nature incredibly beautiful?
Have you had an adventPlease share it with us! Email ystory and any great pictures tha

On the 11th of February I volunteered to help Eglin’s Jackson Guard in a reforestation project. Our leadeandy Pizzoloto, a very dynamic and knowledgeable scientist. We drove to one of Eglin’s largest clay pitsarked the location for over 150 plantings to be conducted during the week. Plants were chosen to provide for wildlife and control erosion. We will be planting long leaf pine, sand live oak, laurel oak, wax myrtle and peon. Sandy explained how to select the site based on sunlight exposure, soil moisture and exposure to snds. We also dug over 35 holes to get a start on the planting leaving over a hundred to be dug by volunteee 12th and 13th. Eglin has about 140 clay pits of which 80 have been restored. Our clay pit is one of the laeasuring 43 acres of which 17 acres are currently being restored. More work is planned for the remainder;
ver, the Air Force still needs the clay pit for the extensive network of range roads. It was an interesting day a
eat experience and I highly recommend it.
Our Conservation Committee met for the second time on 7 February and narrowed a list of projects dowst 4. We still have much work to do decide which projects CAS will actually undertake but I would like to giv
n idea of where we want to go.
Our first project is the creation of a birding/viewing guide for Okaloosa and Walton Counties. It would
sitors and new residents by steering them to productive and interesting sites using the local news, TDC brochnd electronic means.
ur second proposed project calls for the listing of all parks, recreation and nature planning organizations witquirements for participation so we can match the committee objectives with the talents and desires of our A
on members.
One of the ways we can increase the number and area of wildlife habitats is to restore wetlands and sater retention ponds. Our members know where most of the sites are located so we need to compile a list,
rvey of the sites and rank them for local officials. We would also need to work with them on the restoration p
nally, we are impressed with the success of the Niceville Turkey Creek boardwalk. Although not a notable bea, it would probably help to route a leg of the walk out into the fringe habitat, the walk gets a lot of people oe woods. We think this theme could be repeated numerous times through out the counties. We have the k
dge and experience to help with site selection, site architecture and grant writing.ease contact me if you are interested in these or other conservation projects. Our next meeting will be in Nic
n the 6th of March.
