PREPARING FOR WORSHIP

Meditation and Preparation for Worship Hymn No. 583 “Glory to God”

Welcome

Choral Introit Robert Hobby Beloved, we are God’s children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. And all who thus hope in him purify themselves as he is pure. – I John 3:2-3

ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME Call to Worship Leader: The Holy One is our sovereign. Psalm 99

Let us praise God’s great and awesome name! People: Mighty ruler, lover of justice, you have established fairness among us.

Welcome Families to Christ Church!

For those of you with very small children (up to age 3) our Nursery is open and available to you in our lower level. Our caring volunteers are ready and willing to watch over your child while you are in service this morning. You can worship with peace of mind as all parents are given a pager so you can be contacted at a moment’s notice should your child need you. An usher is able to help direct you if you need assistance.

All children are welcome to come forward for our Children’s Message. Following the message, children ages 3 through 7th grade are invited to follow our teachers out for Kids’ Church. At the end of service, children up through 4th grade can be picked up in the lower level, while children in 5th-7th grade can be picked up upstairs in our youth room. An usher is able to help direct you to these locations if you need assistance. Thank you for worshiping with us this morning. I look forward to meeting you and your child.

Christ upon the mountain peak stands alone in glory blazing;

Let us, if we dare to speak, with the saints and angels praise him. Alleluia.

Trembling at his feet we saw Moses and Elijah speaking.

All the prophets and the Law shout through them their joyful greeting.

Swift the cloud of glory came, God proclaiming in the thunder

Jesus as his Son by name! Nations cry aloud in wonder!

This is God’s beloved Son! Law and prophets fade before him;

First and last and only One, let creation now adore him!

Sermon “Known and Experienced” Rev. David L. de Vries

First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s

own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will,

but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Minute for Mission ~ Thai Dancers Jane Linville

(Please sign the Friendship Pad found in your pew and return it

toward the center aisle, noting names of those with whom you are worshiping.) *Hymn in Procession No. 193 “Jesus, Take Us to the Mountain”

The Lord said unto my Lord: Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.

The scepter of your power The Lord shall send forth from Zion: Rule thou in the midst of your enemies.

The power to rule is with you on the day of your strength, in the splendor of the holy ones: I have begotten you from the womb before the rising of the day-star.

The Lord has sworn an oath, and will not repent of it:

You are a priest for ever, after the order of Melchisedech.

As this is our final postlude before the festive season of Eastertide, we celebrate with the blazing energy of dazzling bright colors from the organ. Scripture Readings for March 9, 2014 ~ 1st Sunday in Lent

Genesis 2:15-17; Psalm 32; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11

Consider: How might you grow in faith and draw near to Jesus through the forty days of

Lent? Let Jesus’ three responses to the devil be your guide: (1) study Scripture (live by the

Word of God; Matthew 4:4); (2) seek reconciliation with God and others (do not put God to

the test; Matthew 4:7); and (3) be active and intentional about participating in the worship

of your congregation (worship the Lord your God; Matthew 4:10).

Being the court composer and cathedral organist in Salzburg left Mozart little leeway for the types of music he was to supply for state functions and cathedral liturgies. He knew his music had to be energetic and lively,

even for “solemn” evening worship, when the traditional five Psalms and Magnificat needed to favor the mood of exuberant praise, rather than of meditative prayer.

The Christ Church choir with orchestra will offer a moderate re-creation of that Vespers event in 1780. We will have prayers, chants, and scripture with the proper interspersion of Mozart’s six delightful expressions of the Psalms of praise and Mary’s Song from Luke. One of the most memo-rable works of classical church music is included in the set: “Laudate Dominum” for chorus and soprano solo, which listeners will recognize with delight, as it is sung by Jean Burnquist.

The Mission Ministry of Christ Church proudly announces the visit of the LIKAY THAI FOLK DRAMA DANCERS

They will be presenting dances and drama based upon stories from scrip‐ture after the late service on March 23rd. The presentation will be pre‐ceded by a covered dish luncheon where the baked chicken and mac‐n‐cheese will be provided. This family friendly production is part of the out‐reach mission of the Christian Communications Institute of Payap Univer‐sity in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Its longtime director is Dr. Rob Collins who is married to our mission representative, Dr. Esther Wakeman‐Collins. It was organized to tell the Gospel message to those who were unable to read or were uninterested in just the spoken word. The CCI troupe has presented the Good News Gospel on many international tours and always looks forward to their visit to Christ Church. The drama will begin about 12:30 for those who may not be attending the late service or the luncheon. Please invite friends and neighbors who might enjoy this beautiful message.

Weather/Building Related Closings In the event of church services/activities being cancelled due to inclement weather, the closing

will be announced on the local television stations, WKYC-TV3; NewsChannel 5. You may also

“We have gifts that differ according to the

grace given to us: Prophecy, in

proportion to faith; ministry in ministering;

the teacher in teaching . . .”

Romans 12:6-7

Do you know what spiritual gifts you

have been given? Each of us has been

given specific gifts for a purpose; they

are intended to be used. But first we

have to listen carefully and intentional-

ly to discover those gifts and what the

Lord looks for us to do to use them.

All YOU have to do is commit to

Because We Care, the program serving Stark County military personnel closed. As there were only 14 individuals left who are currently deployed, the Advisory Committee made the decision not to seek further donations, although the program continued to serve in a lesser capacity another 24 who returned from deployment and are stateside. Contacts were made to organizations, social services agencies, businesses and individuals who agreed to serve as a sponsor to one of the 14 still deployed. As a result those service people will continue getting a package monthly for the remainder of their deployment. I still seek individuals to serve as a “pen pal” to a military man/woman who is now stateside who had been previously deployed. If you feel it in your heart to serve one of our military in such a manner, please contact me. Since the program began in Nov. 2011, 157 military personnel have been served. 1805 packages/cards were sent and over 1450 volunteer hours were tracked. It was an all-volunteer effort by a wealth of dedicated volunteers from across the local community. The office at the bottom of the steps has been cleaned out and returned as it was when we began to use the space. Some appropriate items were given to the Food Ministry. Records will remain with the Church. I am grateful to the Session and its members for permitting the program to serve our local military personnel out of Christ Church.
