May 17, 2020-- Sixth Sunday of Easter THE REASON FOR OUR HOPE “What is the reason for your hope?” Imagine somebody coming up to you and asking you that question. Not “What are you hoping for?” or “What are you hoping to do?” No, this isn’t about our desires for possessions or aspirations for life, it’s “Why do you hope?” Peter today tells us that we ought to be ready to give an answer to this ques-tion. Truth be told, few of us spend much time thinking about why we hope. Luckily, the scriptures today give us our answers. We hope be-cause Christ suffered for us, in order that we might come to God. We hope because we know that, in the Spirit, God grants us another Advo-cate through Christ to remain with us always. No matter what we might hope for, whatever we might hope to do, we must always first know and proclaim the reason for our hope: the presence of God in Christ, with us through the power of the Spirit. May 17, 2020 Sixth Sunday of Easter

From Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, It has been a long nine weeks, and many of us are at our wits end. The end date that was given to us, which passed by on Friday, has been moved again. We have been informed that the State does not want houses of worship to open because of the continued risk of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the diocese has agreed to abide by that request, for the health and safety of the people. Unfortunately, members of our community have lost their battles with the virus and other health issues since we have had to close. Although every person lost is important, there is one death in particular that will affect our community, and that is Mr. Charles Moore. Many of you may know him as an usher at the 11:30am Mass, and others from the cafeteria at Tremont Elementary School, you could always find him smiling. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Lola and their family at this time. We continue to pray for all those who are suffering from Covid-19, and other illnesses, during this time, as well as those who are isolated be-cause of the pandemic. People have been asking what I am doing during these days of social distancing, and such, with the parish closed to everyday activity, and even the limitations on ministry. There is the normal activity of praying the Office of Readings and the Liturgy of the Hours, which is an obligation taken on when ordained to the diaco-nate. This is something that priests and deacons are required to participate in, on behalf of the Church, and I can honestly say at times it is the only times I get to pray during the course of the day. During this time, I have been blessed with being able to sit and pray it in a non-rushed atmosphere. Masses have been offered privately, and since it seems so strange and uncomfortable to offer them in an empty chapel or church, I have been celebrating them in my room, with a portable altar given to me by a priest of the Melkite Catholic church. Because of the policies put in place by New York State, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we will not be holding the Inis Fada Fleadh (Irish Music Festival) this June, and I have been contacting the performers, suppliers and others to cancel everything. However, we are looking at the weekend of June 12 & 13, 2021, to host this event next year. While I realize that this was traditionally an Italian parish, the connections I have on the Irish music circuit make this a great opportunity to put on this festival, but to generate some much needed revenue for the parish. Speaking of money, I want to thank all of you who have continued to send in donations to keep the parish functioning during this time. Even after turning off the heat in the church in March (and I have been watching for any freezing temperatures to protect pipes, etc...), and reducing the heat in the parish center, finally turn-ing it off a couple of weeks ago, we have had tremendous bills coming in still. The expenses from Optimum for the phone and internet, electric, gas, and the other monthly recurring bills have not stopped; but thanks to your generousity we are able to cover them.

Continued In previous columns I have mentioned that I was doing necessary repairs to the chapel, including repairing and painting the ceiling, the walls, and the lights. These repairs are still going on, and will hopefully be completed by the time we come back together. It is humbling though, because what I have been able to get done over the course of nine weeks, in the past would have taken a couple of weeks. Because of issues with my back, I am able to work for a day or two, maybe even three, but then have to rest for one to four days; a couple of people have mentioned to me that I’m not young anymore. There are a number of projects yet to be done, including repairs to the parish center kitchen, which got flooded when the hotwater heater burst last month. Over time we will get to what has to be taken care of, but for now we are taking it slow, and recognizing the gifts that God continues to give us throughout this time of testing. I look forward to seeing all of you, when I don’t exactly know. Pax, Fr. Henry

Thank you to the people who came to clean up and take care of their little parcel of our parish last week. Please if you volunteered to work on an area now would be the best time to start as there will not be anyone in your way.

Diocese of Rockville Centre announces Morning Star Initiative

As you may have heard, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has decided to launch a bold plan, called the Morning Star Initiative, to revitalize Catho-lic elementary school education on Long Island. The goal of this initiative is to restore a robust Catholic culture to the DRVC schools, improve academics, and create a more fiscally sustainable model for schools. The Diocese will partner with the Marianists, who have two centuries of Catholic educational commitment and expertise. The Diocese has asked Brother Thomas Cleary, S.M., President of Chaminade High School, to serve as the Chief Revitalization Officer and to spearhead this effort. He will be assisted by his fellow Marianists, who will seek feedback and ideas from the full spectrum of those with a stake in a revitalized Catholic elementary education, including our parishioners. We value your input,

so please share your thoughts. Please visit the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s website at Morningstarinitiative.org .
