Pastor’s Message: INTO THE LIGHT OF CHRIST: We all know the pain and weight of a dark, shameful secret. If we can tell someone, the release is enormous. Saint Paul says that even when we are “dead in our transgressions” we can be “brought . . . to life with Christ” (Ephesians 2:5). Mary Ann McNeil helps burdened people to find the light of Christ. She is the founder of PATH in Atlanta, Georgia, serving people grieving an abortion. Mary Ann knows the steep price they have paid. Some have blamed themselves for decades, convinced they are unfor-giveable, or have fallen prey to depression, physical illness, or risky behaviors. Mary Ann and her trained volunteers provide carefully designed mentoring, prayer, scripture study, and shar-ing. This enables people who are suffering to know they are ac-cepted and forgiven. They can rise up with renewed faith and strength to embrace their lost children in the light of Christ. The light of Christ brings life that can even raise us from the dead. Gospel: John 3:14-21 In teaching Nicodemus, Jesus uses a familiar story from the Old Testament (Numbers 21:4-9) about Moses. When Moses lifted up a bronze snake in the desert for all to see, those who had been bitten by snakes were healed. Jesus says that he too must be lifted up so that all might have eternal life through him. He will be lifted up on the cross. But he will also be lifted up in his resurrection and in his ascension to the Father. Whoever looks at him in faith will receive eternal life. Followers of Jesus recognize him as the light that came into the world. They live truthfully in the light, unlike those who choose the darkness and do evil deeds. 1.) How do members of your family, school community, and parish show that they are living in the light? What can we do to help others choose to live truthfully in the light?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: With the dissipation of the catechumenate’s energy since almost everyone was born into the Church, Lent began to be seen more as a preparation to follow the Passion of Christ with devotion. In the city of Rome, creative spirits settled on “stational churches” as a way of keeping the energy flowing. Everyone would be directed to a certain “station” each day, and the name of that church provided a theme for the liturgy. So, for example, on certain Saturdays in Lent, everything centered on the church of St. Vitale. Now, this poor fellow had been thrown into a hole and cov-ered in stones at his martyrdom, so the read-ings recalled Joseph thrown down the well by his brothers, and the wicked servants killing the son of the owner of the vineyard. Gradu-ally, travelers to Rome noted the celebration and worked it into liturgical schedules back home. Eventually, calendars everywhere bore the curious footnote on a Lenten Saturday: “Station S. Vitale.” This served the priority of getting ready to hear the Passion fairly well, but was hardly satisfactory for Lent’s baptis-mal character. Decorando para la Pascua: Necesitamos ayuda decorando y limpian-do el templo para la Pascua. Estaremos trabajando en la iglesia el jueves, 2 de abril desde las 11:00AM hasta las 4:00PM. Venga a ayudar por una o dos horas. Gracias por compartir su tiempo. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE: Los católicos en general y los latinoa-mericanos en particular, somos muy da-dos al uso de imágenes y símbolos reli-giosos para acercarnos a Dios o para sen-tirnos más cerca de él. En realidad el cristianismo entero es así, gracias a la encarnación del Hijo de Dios. Hay quie-nes critican el uso de imágenes, pero recordemos que Jesús usó imágenes para explicar cómo es Dios. En el Evange-lio de Juan (3:14) Jesús recuerda que Moisés había hecho uso de imágenes para sanar a los hebreos. En Números 21:4-9 Dios le pide a Moisés que haga una serpiente de bron-ce y la levante en alto de tal forma que los hebreos puedan verla. Muchos de ellos habían sido mordidos por serpien-tes en el desierto y al ver la imagen de bronce sanaban, gracias a Dios. El pueblo de Israel se quedó con la imagen. No obstante, con el paso del tiempo olvida-ron que era sólo una imagen y comenza-ron a adorarla hasta que el rey Ezequías se vio en la necesidad de destruirla (2 Reyes 18:4).
