Volume 53, No. 11
Dear Parishioners, Margaret LeJeune, who succeeded Rita Babin as manager of our Zippers Thrift Shop, is retiring after a remarkable 27 years of service to this ministry. I wish to thank her on behalf of our entire parish and the many people served by the Zippers for her dedicated service and leadership. One of her last acts was to present the parish with another check for $10,000! The mission of the Zippers Thrift Shop is to serve the residents of our area who live on very modest incomes. As such, we sell children’s clothes for 25 cents and adult sizes for 50 cents or a dollar. It is a ministry of the church rather than a fund raiser, and helps people to stretch every dollar so they can also afford to pay for food, medicine, and other essentials. Andrea Normand has agreed to take over from Margaret with the generous assistance of our team of dedicated volunteers. However, as we prepare for the return of Vacation Bible School and on-campus Religious Education, we need to scale back the operation of the ministry. Effective immediately, we are no longer able to accept donations of furniture, mattresses, or televisions. We simply don’t have the manpower or space to accommodate these items, so please refer them to St. Vincent de Paul or one of the other organizations in Baton Rouge. We will continue to accept your kind donations of clothing and kitchen items, which are the main focus of the shop. Please make sure the clothes are washed and in good condition before dropping them off at church. We will celebrate another Mass for our Christian Formation students in grades K and 8 this Tuesday, March 16, at approximately 5:30 p.m. Parents are of course welcome to attend the Mass together with the students and teachers. This Friday, March 19, is the Solemnity of St. Joseph and the 186th anniversary of the founding of our church parish. The act of incorporation was signed on this date in 1835. Next month, on Saturday, April 10, 2021, we will celebrate 10 years since the rededication of our church after the major restoration. Pope Francis has dedicated this entire year to St. Joseph as patron of the Universal Church. St. Joseph is characterized as a just or righteous man, and even though he does not speak in the Gospels, he demonstrates his virtue through contemplation and action. He practiced a humble obedience to God’s will in a manner similar to St. Mary. We venerate St. Joseph as the patron saint of our cathedral and Diocese. This year’s Lenten Mission begins next weekend and will be led by Father Jim Sichko, a native of Orange, Texas and a priest of the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky. Father Sichko will introduce the Mission by preaching at all of the Masses next weekend, followed by his main talks on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, March 22, 23, and 24, beginning at 7:00 p.m. each night. Please mark your calendars and make plans to attend. In Christ, Father Matt
