Starting this month, UNT on theSquare is teaming up with theUniversity of North Texas College of

Music to bring live music to downtownDenton through April. “Thursday NightMusic” features faculty and student musi-cians from the university who will presenta variety of musical styles, including jazz, classical and new music.

The series began last week at the univer-sity art gallery with a group led by jazz sax-ophonist John Murphy, chairman of UNT’sDivision of Jazz Studies and organizer ofthe weekly series. Murphy will be backtonight with pianist Sean Giddings, DanielParr on bass and Justin Heaverin on drums.

Herbert Holl, director of the UNT

Institute for the Advancement of the Arts, said “the space works very well for music.”He said last week’s “outstanding” jazz offer-ing “gave the Square a fun, urban vibe” thatdrew people to the gallery.

“This is not a formal concert setting.People should feel free to come and go asthey wish,” he said. “People can wanderaround and look at the art.”

“If you’re the kind of person that can’t sitstill during concerts, this is your venue!”Holl said.

Plans are in the works to continue theseries, possibly in the summer and fall.

“I hope it will become another Dentontradition,” Holl said.

Not long after the 35Conferette crowds dis-perse and the musicians

that drew them here head forSouth by Southwest in Austin, there will still be indie touringbands worth hearing in Dentonand good reason to head toHailey’s for more than a brew.

Moving Mountains may notbe as earth-altering as its nameimplies, but the four-man bandfrom Purchase, N.Y., has bothmuscle and might. There’s nosuch thing as passive listeninghere, no. The post-rock band isvery much plugged-in — liter-ally and figuratively — withrhythmically tight-on-targetintensity, emotional and, attimes, on-the-edge vocals, unapologetic, personal lyrics, and a decidedly driven delivery.

Moving Mountains’ secondfull-length album, Waves, is theband’s first collective effort. Therecording evolved over time in astudio basement, and its release

styl-ist finally gave the

Denton Record-Chronicle a sliverof his schedule.

DRC Sir Lucious Left Foot has a lot to offer an attention-deficit listener. You hit a cool party vibe on tracks like “Shutterbug”

(which includes a nice hat tip to Soul II Soul, by the way). You have someflirtatious flavor with “Theme Song.” You recorded some personal songs. How

do you manage to write a body of work from such a broad creative landscape? BIG BOI Basically, I guess my thought process is something of a scatterbrain. I

have stuff going on all day. I’m constantly listening to different things, watching a lot ofstuff. I’ve always got stuff going on. So when it comes time to write, all of that’s in my

head. I call it a real brain tsunami.

DRC What made you gravitate toward the artists you feature on the album — T.I., JanelleMonae, Yelawolf? What did they bring to your music that you just had to have?

BIG BOI I like to work with artists that I kind of admire, that are kind of different.Something that Janelle, for instance, brings to my music is fearless creativity. When we do arecord together, it’s going to be out of this world. When I get artists involved, I want to push

them outside of their comfort zone. For me, it’s about adventure with these artists. When youpush them past the comfort zone, you can really get the music working.

DRC In the album, you proudly identify yourself as an artist from the DirtySouth. What do you think hip-hop artists from the South have contributed to

hip-hop as a whole? BIG BOI I think it’s a musicality that we bring, like melodies, and just

grittiness. And not being conformed to just one kind of music, likeEast Coast/West Coast. We listen to everything. We use everythingwe hear in the music we do.

DRC The album sounds really fresh. Take “Be Still” forinstance, with Janelle Monae. It doesn’t sound, in

anything could make 35

Conferette feel less like a

love letter to indie music and all its attendant earnestness,

it’s a knocking, thumping, booty-shaking live set by Big Boi.

Big Boi, nee Antwan Andre Patton, is probably best known as

one half of the six-time Grammy Award-winning hip-hop duo

OutKast. The Georgia-based artist will close the music festival with beats and bravado. Big Boi released his latest record, Sir Lucious Left Foot ... The Son of Chico

Dusty, in July. The record covers plenty of stylistic fronts, with the signaturehip-hop touches. He features fresh young talent (like the audacious Janelle

Monae) and lets established musicians shine (like funk godfather GeorgeClinton). Sir Lucious showcases the artist’s rapid-fire flow and his

knack for making a dirty turn of phrase sound like a sugar-coatedconfection. The album is divided between hip-hop, telling a

personal story with tracks such as “Hustle Blood,” andthe posturing of rap, like “Shutterbug.”

terms of melody, like a hip-hopsong. What did you hear inthat song that made you takethe risk on it as a hip-hoptrack?

BIG BOI First and fore-most, I don’t consider myself ahip-hop artist. It’s broaderthan that. Themusic I do, youcan’t just call ithip-hop. WhenI heard the song“Be Still,” I knewthere was a wayto take the songto another level.

DRC During your formativeyears as a rap fan and then asan artist, did you foresee hip-hop following in jazz’s foot-steps? You know, by becomingreggaeton, Latin hip-hop andeventually, along with it,becoming the rhythmic spineof pop songs by artists likeKe$ha?

BIG BOI Not really. Youknow, you never can really tellwhere it would go. My goal is tomake the coldest music in theworld. You have to use whatev-

er you can to keep it funky. Youhave to keep it funky.

DRC You’re a survivor inthe hip-hop landscape. You’vebeen in the business since theearly 1990s and call shots nowas a producer. What does ittake to make as many recordsas you have?

BIG BOI Youhave to be inno-vative. It’s allabout innova-tion, takingrisks on music. And you haveto do music. These dayssome of themusic createdisn’t even

music. It’s just noise. You haveto strive to create that newsound, that new music.

DRC How do you knowwhen you’ve created that andthat risk has paid off?

BIG BOI When the song isjamming so hard that it makesyou screw up your face andmove your body and go ‘oh [ex-pletive]!’ you know you got it.

titled album that mines the likesof Hank Williams, Buck Owensand Bill Monroe without tryingto imitate Patsy Cline.

Shades of blue follow the sis-ters through the album, touch-ing on love’s sweet discovery in“My Heart Skips a Beat,” lovingfrom afar in “Tennessee Me,”and lurking in the doldrumswith tracks like “Why Don’tYou Love Me.”

The siblings touched basewith the Denton Record-Chron-icle just a day after coming homefrom a European tour.

DRC Who sings melody andwho sings harmony?

LYDIA Usually, Laura singsmelody and I usually sing theharmony. We do switch it up.

DRC Your self-titled albumis nostalgic, and your promo-tional photos have the samefeeling. Why are the two of youdrawn to roots music?

LAURA I think we’re justdrawn to it because it wasinstilled in us when we were

really young. We’re guiltysometimes of romanticizingthe past and that era. We feellike the music is really sincereand it is still applicable to whatpeople live with today. Wereally like the singers of thattime, too. In those days, whatyou heard while the singer wasin the studio was what youheard on the record.

LYDIA Exactly. We reallywant to have the same soundlive as we have on the record. Now everything is so overpro-duced.

DRC Do you find that allages enjoy your music? It’s notjust older people who arefamiliar with that music?

LAURA Oh, yeah.Absolutely. I think it’s beensuch an interesting thing tosee who is drawn to our music. We consider ourselves countrymusic artists, and we find thatpeople have a different idea ofwhat country music is, andthey don’t consider us countrymusicians. It’s been really funto see, too, that there are lotsof little kids who like ourmusic. And I’m talking about3-to-8-year-olds. People sur-

prise us when they say “My 4-year-old loves your music!” Idon’t know what it is about it,but they definitely do.

DRC Did the two of yougrow up singing in church? Why do I hear old Methodisthymn-singing in your voices?

LYDIA We grew up in theChurch of Christ — and I don’tknow if you know this, butthat movement doesn’t use anymusical instruments [duringworship] — you really have tolearn how to harmonize.

DRC What do you thinkproducer T Bone Burnettbrought to this album?

LAURA T Bone is, for us,someone who brought a signa-ture sound to the record. Hemade it appealing to a broadergroup of people. It really kindof helped bring his audiencein. I think we would have got-ten our own audience no mat-ter what, but to have him say ‘Ilike this’ made a huge differ-ence.

LYDIA We were really, reallylucky having him on board. Wehad made the record in Febru-ary [2010], and he came along

a few months later and justturned our world upside-down.

DRC Now that the album ison shelves, what do feel itaccomplishes artistically?

LAURA It accomplishessome things we intended. Notto be completely shallow, butit’s a fun record. It’s a goodtime. To go a little deeper, onething that we really wanted onthis record was to bring atten-tion to that kind of music.Where we are now, peoplehave really forgotten where wecame from musically and howthat affects where we’re going.

LYDIA Something has real-ly shifted in the music busi-ness. We always say you haveto know where you came from. We’d like to bring people backto that part of our history.

DRC What can Dentonaudiences expect from yourlive set on Thursday?

LYDIA The setup is just usand a guitar. We’ll play somesongs from the record, but it’spretty different from ourrecord.

LAURA Beyond the songsand the setup, we try to make

our audiences feel like it’s ashared experience. I don’t likeit when an artist doesn’t sharethe music with the audience. We really want it to be almosta conversation with the peoplewho come, and make it some-thing that it wouldn’t be if weall weren’t there at thatmoment.

DRC If the producers ofGlee called and said: “Guys,we’re going to have the castsing ‘I’ve Got a Feeling,’” wouldyou be happy or terrified?

LYDIA That’s hard to say. ...That song isn’t ours — itbelongs to the people whowrote it. ... I’ve never watchedan episode of Glee.

DRC Who would you love tosee at the festival?

LAURA Mavis Staples, defi-nitely.

LYDIA If we could make itto see her, that’d be my firstchoice. That’s who we’d like tosee. That would be amazing.

Everyone needs a mom. And,judging by Disney’s new 3-Danimated feature Mars NeedsMoms, mothers are also neededin outer space.

Mars Needs Moms is pro-duced by the same team behindthe motion-capture hits AChristmas Carol and The PolarExpress. The process renderscharacters that look almost life-like. But here, it also means alack of visual excellence, asMars Needs Mom takes placemostly on a planet overcastwith grays and muted tones.

Simon Wells (great-grandsonof H.G.) directs from the scripthe co-wrote with Wendy Wellsbased on the book by irreverentyet revered cartoonist BerkeleyBreathed (Bloom County).

Mars Needs Moms mostlystays in safe territory, with itstale of 9-year-old Milo (voicedby Seth Green), who tells his

mother (Joan Cusack) that hewould be better off without her.Suddenly, Martians land andscoop her up, while franticMilo chases after her and findshimself along for the ride.

Fortunately for Milo, he fallsunder the wing of John Candy-lookalike Gribble (Dan Fogler),who claims to be left behindfrom Ronald Reagan’s inter-stellar anti-communist pro-gram (“Why do you think theycall it the ‘red’ planet?” he asks). They team together with sym-pathetic Martian Ki (ElisabethHarnois) to fight the multitudeof warriors, natives and robots.

Mars Needs Moms neveroverdoes the cultural referencesor tries too hard to impress withits smarmy cleverness.
