Campbell plays it soft, White Drugs pour it onCaleb Ian Campbell is

the wunderkindDenton is starting to

recognize. The 20-somethingsinger, songwriter and bandmember has the chops thatmusicians like Andrew Tinkerhave — a keen understandingof the keyboard and the guitar, and a mind for music bothanalytical and inspirational.

There’s one big differencebetween Campbell and thelikes of Tinker.

He’s not classically trained.Campbell held court to great

effect during appearances atthis year’s North by 35 MusicConferette. As the frontman ofthe Polycorns, Campbell per-formed at Sweetwater Grill &Tavern in the local band’s finalshow. A day later, he strippedhis set bare for a solo act atAndy’s Bar. Campbell head-lines Friday night at Dan’sSilverleaf, 103 Industrial St.

The gig will be a teaser ofCampbell’s unreleased albumand a chance to hear what’sroosting in the musician’s brainfor a hoped-for second record.

His debut record has been inthe can for maybe two months,Campbell said. The project wasa chance to work with anotherlocal musician, Robert Gomez.

“It was kind of a randomthing,” Campbell said. “I’vebeen a fan of Robert’s for awhile now. I’d go to his showsand walk up to him to shakehis hand afterward. I told himI had a demo. A few monthslater, he contacted me and toldhim he liked what he heard.”

What Gomez heard wasatmospheric, haunting musicwritten with both care and ataste of risk. Campbell weavesa boyish tenor through musicthat is plaintive but passionate, heady but heartfelt.

One can see why Gomezwould produce Campbell’srecord. In his guitar work —which seems to hint at theharp at some moments and the

piano at others — Campbellexperiments with counterpointand space, similar to whatGomez does in his last album,Pine Sticks and Phosphorous.

“Robert is right along mytastes,” Campbell said. “Welook at things the same way.”

Campbell isn’t signed, butsaid the album is beingshopped to labels this fall.

“I would say it’s kind of likea personal album,” he said. “Alot of the songs revert back tothe feelings of being a child, and being able to play withtoys — I was thinking about

that a lot when I was workingon it. I used a lot of instru-mentation that really followedthat feeling. For instance, Iused a toy piano in a part of asong. It’s interesting to find thesophisticated sound in a toyinstrument.”

The tracks are suspendedbetween play and discovery. The songs are spacious. In“FortifyTheMessageIn,” Camp-bell does a duet with Dentonsongwriter Sarah Jaffe. Drea-my and spacious, the songcatches a youthful spirit andan old soul in dialogue.

“It has a lot of hauntingmelodies that are kind of laid-back,” Campbell said of therecord. “There are some piecesthat are upbeat and poppy, butit still had that spacey kind offeeling.”

Sounds like: Jeff Buckley ona day when his demons weresimmering. Or the ghost ofguitarist Andres Segovia nest-ing in a 19-year-old boy whoprefers meditation to football. Are those the finicky angles ofMexican composer ManuelMaria Ponce we hear in“Notebook Owner”? Could itbe those rebellious time signa-tures? Listen for yourself atwww.myspace.com/calebiancampbell.

Details: Peopleodian,Savage and the Big Beat openthe show at 10 p.m. Friday.Ages 18 and older. Cover is $5.

For some forceful chutzpah

and ear-piercing vocals, checkout Denton’s White Drugsduring their record releaseshow at 9 p.m. today atRubber Gloves RehearsalStudios, 411 E. Sycamore St.

White Drugs doesn’t botherwith safe stuff. Lyrically, theband reflects on illicit sub-stances and putting a girl-friend up for sale. Fuzzy gui-tars, wham-boom-pow drumsand throat-shredding vocalsmake the band a sure thing foran evening of testosterone-drenched music.

And yet White Drugs, whichunveils its latest release, thevinyl-only Gold Magic, isn’t amere noise factory. Melody isimportant to the local quartet.

Sounds like: Black Francisand the Stooges becomingblood brothers in a smallTexas town.

Details: White Drugs head-lines after sets by Puffy Areolasand Kaboom. Doors open at 9p.m. Cover is $15.

Doors open at 8 p.m.Monday at RubberGloves for Junius, the

Boston-based band that Roll-ing Stone called “spellbindingand heartbreaking, grippingfrom the first note to the last. Ahard rock dream come true.”

Junius is on the road, pro-moting its debut full-lengthalbum that took three years tocomplete: The Martyrdom of aCatastrophist, referring to thecontroversial psychoanalyst-scientist Immanuel Velikovsky.

The Russian-born Americanwrote several books, includingthe 1950 bestseller Worlds ofCollision, which claimed theEarth was affected by cata-clysmic near-misses withVenus and Mars. Academicsand scientists alike pooh-

poohed Velikovsky’s cata-strophic claims, but Einsteinsupported him in his research. The controversy is referred toas “The Velikovsky Affair.”

Martyrdom chronicles Veli-kovsky’s life from birth todeath, beginning with “Birth

Rites by Torchlite,” whoseintroduction includes thesewords from Velikovsky: “Thebelief that we are living in aorderly universe, that nothinghappened to this Earth andother planets since the begin-ning, that nothing will happen

till the end, is a wishful think-ing that fills the textbooks …and your textbooks are still ofVictorian vintage.”

From there, the song launch-es into a musical tribute thatlasts through 10 songs inter-spersed with portions of Veli-kovsky’s writings and lectures, ending with the swirling “TheMourning Elegy.” Junius’ post-rock music has been called “cin-ematic.” In a word, it’s powerful.

Showgoers can plan on hear-ing parts of Martyrdom mixedwith recorded Velikovsky snip-pets as well as some of theband’s older gems.

Sharing the bill is Orbs, which has been touring withJunius and is promoting itsdebut, Asleep Next to Science, released earlier this week. Thecover charge for the evening is$8. Rubber Gloves is located at411 E. Sycamore St.

Archeology’s name refer-ences how two of theindie-folk band’s mem-

bers met, but the name wasalso chosen for its more scien-tific meaning — evokingimages of unearthing relics ofprevious cultures in an attemptto better understand one’s own.

The Portland, Ore., band’snucleus is two friends, DanielWalker (lead vocals, bass, gui-tar) and Jason Davis (vocals, guitar), who met at an archaeo-logical research site and discov-ered they had much in com-mon. In addition to their loveof music, they both grew up inchurches and had ministers forfathers.

They were later joined by

drummer Benjamin Haysomand singer-guitarist-keyboard-ist Zach Dilday, who also camefrom deeply religious back-grounds.

Archeology’s music exploresspiritual beliefs, particularlywith its latest release, Memo-rial, which examines modernreligion.

The title track begins, “Whenwe walk, we walk with dark-ness/And our hearts they lovethe lawless … I said I’d gowhere he would lead me/Downa path of grace and mercy/But Istumbled/Now I’m standing atthe crossroads/no sign of heav-en.” The chorus asks, “Andwhen my body breaks, will yourwords heal my wounds?”

These former church boysprobably sang their share ofhymns on Sunday morningsand those harmonies weren’tlost on them. Neither was theirtime spent listening to sermonsand pondering their messages.Archeology, through deep dig-ging and soul-searching, is nowfound.

Archeology will be perform-ing Friday night at Hailey’s, 122W. Mulberry St., along withAnalog Rebellion, Land Mam-mals and Young and Brave.Doors open at 9 p.m., and theshow is open to all ages. Thecover charge is $6 for those 21and older, $7 for those youngerthan 21.

COVER STORY

And although he had kept hisaddiction hidden from the pub-lic, he has since been very bold insharing his faith and the strugglethat brought him to it, which heshares in an “I Am Second” videoat www.iamsecond.com.

Welch and his band will beone of 12 groups performingSaturday at a Christian rockmusic festival called “FortyFest:Resonate! 2010” at the TexasMotor Speedway in Fort Worth.

The festival, which is in its firstyear, was originally scheduled forMarch 20, but snow forced itscancellation.

The organizers decided toreschedule the event for this yearinstead of waiting until nextMarch to try again, said BlaineSiske, one of the organizers.

“[The bands] were anxious toreally help us out,” he said, adding that the performersagreed to come back as theirtours allowed.

Welch was glad for the delaybecause he believes his touringband now has a tighter sound.

“It’s going to be that much bet-ter,” he said.

Welch said he isn’t “all weirdand out there” like some peoplewould expect, but that he ties hisold life in well with his new life.In the time since he turned tofaith in Jesus, Welch said he is ina better place.

“I think people are going to besurprised,” he said of his upcom-ing performance.

He will be performingSaturday night before the head-liner Red, which he is happyabout because he doesn’t likeheadlining.

“Even in Korn I didn’t like it,”Welch said.

He will also be touring withRed later this year while promot-ing his 40-day devotional to be

released in December, titledStronger: Forty Days of Rock,Jesus and Salvation.

While his music has aChristian message, Welch doesn’tclassify it as Christian music andhe wouldn’t call himself aChristian musician.

“Christians don’t know what todo with me, and my old life does-n’t know what to do with me,”Welch said.

He said he is a musician whohappens be a Christian.

He follows it up with an expla-nation from a member of theband P.O.D., who asks: If aplumber is a Christian, does thatmake him a Christian plumber?

During his shows, Welch stillplays some of the songs from his

Korn days — but not the morecontroversial tracks — as well asmusic from his first solo album,Save Me From Myself, and themusic he is currently workingon.

“The crowd seems to get prettyelectrified,” he said.

Welch gives God the credit forhis ability to write lyrics.

He didn’t write lyrics for Korn, but on his solo album he wrotethe lyrics and the music.

“I didn’t have anything to writeabout before,” he said.

He approaches each perform-ance based on the crowd and thevenue, usually sharing his testi-mony.

“A lot of times I like to tell mystory about really having a rock-

star dream,” Welch said. He said he talks about how he

got to the end of himself andturned his focus to God.

“I attract a lot of people whoare going through turmoil intheir life,” he said.

His fans are as mixed as hismusic: some old, some new.

Welch said a lot of Korn fanshated him when he left the bandbecause they had been turned offby “religion.” But he said after

they read his book Save Me FromMyself — which shares its namewith his solo album — some ofthose fans understood how losthe was.

Since Welch initially “doveinto” his faith, he has had hisstruggles. But he said the differ-ence is “now I carry this peaceand joy.”

Welch said he feels he is at acrossroads with his faith; hecould either get lazy or get onfire. He is hoping to take it to thenext level.

Welch said he wants to “keepon and never give up.”

He describes the way Godtouched his life in his book as afeeling like “someone poured liq-uid love into my body.”

The feeling was a high thatdrugs had never given him, andit is what ultimately halted hisaddiction.

Now, Welch feels he gives morein every performance and pusheshimself harder than before.

“I believe it’s for God first, peo-ple second and me last,” he said.

his music and his faith Satur-

day at “FortyFest: Resonate!

2010.”

By Rachel MehlhaffStaff Writer

Brian “Head” Welch may not do drugs anymore, but “I still do crazy music,” saidthe guitarist, a former member of Korn. During his time with the nu-metalband, he was addicted to drugs and lived what he calls a “tormented” existence.

Drugs controlled his life for a number of years, to the point that he was neglecting hisresponsibilities as a father to his now-12-year-old daughter, Jennea, who played a bigpart in his decision to change.

She had already lost her mother to a drug addiction, and he didn’t want her to loseher father.

That’s when he turned to God.

OPENING FRIDAYCairo Time (1/2) Fans of Patricia

Clarkson and anyone who wants a

tour of the chaotic yet picturesque

city of Cairo might appreciate this

deliberately measured film from wri-

ter/director Ruba Nadda. Clarkson

plays Juliette, who, while waiting for

her husband, finds herself being ac-

companied throughout the city by

Tareq (Alexander Siddig), a retired

cop. Their affection grows during the

tour, combining light romance with

travelogue. Rated PG, 90 minutes. At

the Magnolia and Angelika Plano. —

Boo Allen

Jean-Michel Basquiat: The RadiantChild (1/2) Compelling documen-

tary about the eccentric painter

whose life was cut tragically short just

after he became an underground

celebrity in the New York art scene

during the 1980s. An affectionate trib-

ute to the artist from director and

friend Tamra Davis, the film might not

appeal to outsiders, but Davis capably

places the artist’s career into context.

Although it could use more depth in

spots, the images are powerful. Not

rated, 88 minutes. At the Angelika

Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson

Lottery Ticket Kevin Carson (Bow

Wow) is just an ordinary guy living in

the projects, until the day he wins a

$370 million lottery prize. Unfortu-

nately for Kevin, the lottery claim

office is closed for a long holiday

weekend, and he must keep his good

fortune a secret. Of course, the news

spreads like wildfire, and poor Kevin

must figure out how to survive three

days among all the friends, family

and neighbors who want a piece of

his good fortune. Rated PG-13, 95

minutes.

Piranha 3D Spring break turns gory

when an underground tremor releas-

es hundreds of prehistoric, carnivo-

rous fish into Lake Victoria, a popular

waterside resort. Rated R, 89 min-

utes.

The Switch Kassie (Jennifer Aniston)

is single woman who, despite her

neurotic best friend Wally’s (Jason

Bateman) objections, decides it’s time

to have a baby with a little help from

a charming sperm donor (Patrick

Wilson). Unbeknownst to her, Wally

switches the preferred sample for his

own. Rated PG-13, 101 minutes.

Vampires Suck () And so does

this movie. That was an easy one,

but this latest spoof from the direc-

tors of Epic Movie and Meet the

Spartans is shockingly uninspired.

This time the primary target is the

Twilight series and other vampire

movies, along with pokes at contem-

porary teenage television shows. But

the sight gags and one-liners are

hopelessly flat and stale, perhaps a

product of YouTube and other such

innovations rendering films of this

sort obsolete. Rated PG-13, 77 min-

utes. — T.J.

Winnebago Man (1/2) Enter-

taining but ultimately aimless docu-

mentary about the phenomenon of

“Winnebago Man.” Rebney gained

tually went viral, gaining him new

fame on the Internet and YouTube.

At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A.

She’s kid-tested, mother-approved

By Boo AllenFilm Critic

Nanny McPhee — the person, not the movie — follows a for-mula. When you don’t want herbut need her, she will appear. When you no longer need her,but still want her, she must go.

Nanny McPhee Returns fol-lows a less restrictive formula.

In Nanny McPhee Returns, the snaggle-toothed, warty, unibrowed matron from thesurprise 2005 hit makes hersecond appearance. This time,it is all about the kids. The orig-inal Nanny McPhee was also akid-pleaser based on novelistChristianna Brand’s books. Butthis latest incarnation, withfrighteningly talented EmmaThompson again supplying thescreenplay and the lead role, aims solely at drawing laughsfrom kids. That’s fine, too, but itmight leave adults yearning forsome of the cleverness and

more mature humor of theoriginal.

This Nanny finds IsabelGreen (Maggie Gyllenhaal)struggling to raise her threerebellious children on a ruralEnglish farm while her hus-band is serving in World WarII. Her smarmy, combativeyoung niece and nephew arrivefrom bomb-threatened Lon-don just as it looks like the fam-ily homestead might be lost tofinancial problems.

Enter Nanny McPhee, “smallC, capital P,” as she loves toremind. She whips the childreninto shape and gradually goesabout solving the problems ofan absent father and fleetingfunds. But director SusannaWhite only uses these mainspots from Thompson’s script

as a jumping-off point.White flips among various

pursuits, highlighting poop gags, pratfalls, broad humor and cloy-ing, Babe-like animatronics. Theuneven results include synchro-nized swimming pigs, belchingcrows, and elephants wanderingin and out with little explanation.White seems to grab for whatev-er might be on hand to wring outhumor that would appeal to chil-dren.

On the plus side, NannyMcPhee Returns mimics itspredecessor in sporting excel-lent production values. Thecomputer effects usually lookrealistic enough, howeverabsurd. Mike Eley’s cinematog-raphy and Simon Elliott’s pro-duction designs accentuate theGreens’ colorful and evocativefarm life. Distinguished lumi-naries such as Ralph Fiennesand Maggie Smith take support-ing roles, giving distinct person-alities to characters that mightotherwise have been overlooked.

DR. BOO ALLEN is anaward-winning film critic forthe Denton Record-Chronicle.
