Today we officially enter the Lenten season, and the gos-

pel speaks of Jesus going off into the wilderness. If we

look at Jesus’ ministry, we see that he follows a pattern

of going into the world and then withdrawing for prayer

and reflection. Today’s gospel follows Jesus’ baptism.

There he has heard the call from God, and he comes to

understand himself as the beloved Son. Rather than

rush out into ministry from this event, he withdraws to

the desert where in prayer and fasting he might come to

a deeper appreciation of who he is and what his mission

is to be. The temptations Luke describes help Jesus to

delineate himself and his work.

If we are to enter into Jesus’ ministry, we too must follow

his method. We cannot always be on the front lines. We

cannot always be doing. During Lent, the entire church

joins her Lord in the wilderness, so that together we

might discern what we are called to do.

Our particular community is committed to evangeliza-

tion: proclaiming the good news. But during this Lenten

season, we too might withdraw in prayer. We ask to be

shown the next step. We ask that our vocation be tested.

We ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Ministry is going back and forth from work to prayer.

Work alone is not enough. We must constantly bring our

work to God in prayer and seek to discern God’s will for

us. Like Jesus, this Lent let us ask ourselves individual-

ly and as a community, Who are we? And, What is God

calling us to do to proclaim the gospel?

Hoy entramos oficialmente en la temporada de Cuaresma, y el evan-gelio habla de que Jesús se fue al desierto. Si observamos el minis-terio de Jesús, vemos que sigue un patrón de ir al mundo y luego retirarse para orar y reflexionar. El evangelio de hoy sigue el bautis-mo de Jesús. Allí ha oído la llamada de Dios. y llega a entenderse a sí mismo como el Hijo amado. En lugar de apresurarse al ministerio a partir de este evento, se retira al desierto donde, en oración y ayuno, puede llegar a apreciar más profunda-mente quién es él y cuál es su misión. Las tentaciones que Lucas describe ayudan a Jesús a delinearse a sí mismo y su trabajo. Si vamos a entrar en el ministerio de Jesús, también debemos seguir su método. No siempre podemos estar en primera línea. No siempre podemos estar haciendo. Pedimos que nos muestren el paso neto. Pedimos que nuestra vocación sea puesta a prueba. Pedimos la guía del Espíritu Santo. El ministerio va y viene del trabajo a la oración. Trabajar solo no es suficiente. Constantemente debemos llevar nuestro trabajo a Dios en oración y buscar discernir la voluntad de Dios para nosotros. Como Jesús, esta Cuaresma, preguntémonos individualmente y como comunidad, ¿quiénes somos? Y, ¿qué nos está pidiendo Dios que hagamos para proclamar el evangelio?

We are now six weeks into the Diocesan Support Appeal campaign, and as of today our parishioners have contributed $354.44. We need

each of you to help us reach our goal of $10,728.00.

TAKE LOTS OF BEER DURING LENT.

The Pastor of St. Patrick Church Bangalore in India gave a simple advise on what to do during the 40 days of Lent. He says we should take lots of BEER. Now do not let your minds go wondering. This means:

B- BIBLE- Read your Bible. This God's given time to be spiritually en-riched with the Word of God.

E- EMPATHY- Feel empathy for the poor and neglected and do some-thing about it.

E-EUCHARIST- Go for Mass frequently besides Sundays, if possible go everyday.

R- RECONCILIATION-This is the best time to reconcile with those we have hurt, not talking with, seeking forgiveness. restore our relationship with God and one another.

Have a wonderful and joyful day, and do not forget your BEER.

TOME MUCHA CERVEZA DURANTE LA CUARESMA.

El pastor de la Iglesia de San Patricio en Bangalore, India, dio un simple consejo sobre qué hacer durante los 40 días de Cuaresma. Dice que debe-ríamos tomar mucha CERVEZA. Ahora no dejen que sus mentes se vayan preguntando. Esto significa: B- BIBLIA- Lee tu Biblia. Este tiempo dado por Dios para ser enriquecido espiritualmente con la Palabra de Dios. E- EMPATÍA- Sentir empatía por los pobres y desatendidos y hacer algo al respecto. E-EUCARISTÍA: vaya a misa con frecuencia, además de los domingos, si es posible, vaya todos los días. R- RECONCILIACIÓN: este es el mejor momento para reconciliarnos con aquellos a quienes hemos lastimado, sin hablar, buscando perdón. Restaura nuestra relación con Dios y con los demás. Tenga un día maravilloso y alegre, y no olvide su CERVEZA.
