Dear Parishioners, Time and time again we are encouraged to reflect on our lives and thoughtfully discern our choices. No other place is this maxim preached as in the business world. For example, you should always have a thoughtful busi-ness plan. However, we tend to make hasty decisions every day. Why? Well, let’s first take a moment to make the distinction between reaction and response. Reaction is a knee-jerk, mindless, very often quick imitation of what is presented to us. You attack me, I attack you. As the old grade school chant goes, monkey sees, monkey does. Re-sponse, however, is mindful, a bringing forth of who we really are to engage what has approached us. Obviously, response is preferable. But response takes time. To avoid a hasty decision is not only that we are to think before we act. “Count to ten!” But just as important, we are to find the inner space where we are unconditionally loved by God. With our heart, soul, and mind fully en-gaged we make a thoughtful decision. We listen atten-tively. Stephen R. Covey, who authored many books on execu-tive leadership skills, writes: “Between stimulus and response there is space. In that space lies our freedom and power to choose our response. In those choices lie our growth and our happiness.” The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness (New York: Free Press, 2014), p. 43 Our faith asks us to take time and think. Do we do this? Or, is the first thing we say, “NO!” Do we replay the same mental tape from 20 years ago about an issue? Or, worse, repeat something that someone else said as fact without our own discernment? Prejudices of all kinds “get legs” from this approach. Are we taking the time to reflect and say “Yes,” or “I never thought about it that way”? With Prayers during Lent, Father Mike Meany

Wtedy z pełnym zaangażowaniem serca, duszy i umysłu podejmujemy przemyślaną decyzję i uważnie słuchamy. Stephen R. Covey, autor wielu książek na temat umiejętności kierowniczych, pisze: Między bodźcem a reakcją jest przestrzeń. W tej przestrzeni leży nasza wolność i moc do wyboru naszej odpowiedzi. W tych wyborach leży nasz wzrost i nasze szczęście. The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness (New York: Free Press, 2014), s. 43 Nasza wiara prosi nas, abyśmy poświęcili czas na myslenie. Z modlitwami w czasie Wielkiego Postu, Ks. Mike Meany

Through the use of story telling, sacred scripture, and the practical experience gained through 30 years as a social worker, Mr. Donahue, will guide us on how we can all better transform our anger rather than repressing it. A few of the topics that will be explored: Reflect on who do you know that handles anger well? Learn the Practice of Mindfulness - Slow breathing, walking, quiet prayer, Be grateful. You are breathing, alive. Appreciate the moment. This practice prepares you to respond with compassion. Discover how we all can learn to feed the seeds of compassion instead of the seeds of anger/judgement. Practice - Compassionate Communication James G. Lenten English Mission

Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody: The Life-Changing Power of Grace Sunday March 17th 6 p.m. Evening Mass Mon. March 18th 6:30 p.m. Prayer Service Tuesday, March 19th 6:30 p.m. Prayer Service Deacon Peter John Pedrasa and Mr. Maciek Karaban, Pastoral Associate Inspired by the book by Allen R. Hunt, Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody, Deacon Peter and Mr. Karaban will reflect of the power of forgiveness. Through the use of real-life experiences and theology, they will explore how so many people today fail to capture the power of forgiveness because they are afraid of it, because they have grown comfortable in their familiar wounds, or because they are just stub-born. The Lenten Mission will help us explore the reasons that for even the best of us forgiveness is usu-ally underrated and understated. Our prayers together will hopefully enable us to give forgiveness and to unleash the many graces within us.

Deacon Peter John Pedrasa, will be ordained as a Priest for the Di-ocese of Tucson, Arizona, this May. He is currently completing a Masters in Divinity from The University of Saint Mary of the Lake at Mundelein Seminary, Mundelein, Illinois. Dea-con Peter has served at St. John

Brebeuf for the past two years through the Teaching Parish Program.

Mr. Maciek (Mac) Karaban, has been the Director of Religious Education and the Pastoral Associate for the past five years at St. John Brebeuf. He received his Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies (MAPS) in May 2014 from Loyola University

Chicago. He also received a Master of Arts in Catho-lic Social Teaching in June 2000 from The Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University, Warsaw, Poland.

Uncle Pete’s Sack Dinner Ministry is about to kickoff its 2019 season. This ministry continues to serve those less fortunate in the Chicagoland area by serving over 400 meals per month. Some of the locations served include Deborah's Place, Franciscan Shelter, Mother Theresa Sisters of Charity Soup Kitchen, St. Leonard and Grace House. These places in need could use as many as 800 meals each month. Your involvement would be great-ly appreciated … and it’s easy. On March 9th and 10th, at all the weekend Masses, brown bags and menu guidelines will be available at tables as you exit the church. You simply need to fill the bags and return them to the front of church on the morning of Tuesday, March 19th, between 5:45 AM and 9:00 AM. We need your help - Please consider being a part of this very worthwhile ministry. If you are interested in volunteering to distribute bags after the Masses, please contact Dan Vonder Heide at 773.910.5536. Thank you and God bless.

Support the Catholic Church in Central And Eastern Europe

This week our special collection supports the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. The fall of communism occurred over 25 years ago, but the Church in former communist countries continues to struggle to rebuild after years of oppressive rule. Many churches in this region were confiscated or destroyed, leaving the faithful without a place to worship or to find pastoral support. Your support of this collec-tion helps rebuild churches, supports seminary programs, promotes ministries and education for children and families, and renews commu-nity life around the region. Please be generous, and prayerfully consider how you can support this collection today.

Thank you Fr. Tom Repezia! The following was published in the Daily Herald— 2/24/19 Letter to the Editors: In honor of a priest who faithfully serves This letter celebrates the career of a Catholic priest. We have seen shocking headlines concerning awful behav-ior by some priests. Our hearts go out to the victims, whose lives have been permanently harmed. We in the congrega-tion are left to wonder why. It’s also important to share positive stories of the clergy who have morally and faithfully live3d their vows with honor in the Catholic church community. One of those individuals, the 73 years young Father Tom Repezia, pastor at St. Thomas of Villanova in Palatine, re-cently announced he’s retiring this coming June. Father Tom has fought several ailments over the years, so he utilizes a cane, and uses a chair while celebrating the Eucharist. Fr. Tom announced from the altar, that he felt he needed to stand. While leaning on the arm of his chair and steadying with his cane he stood up, then after tasking a deep breath said, “it’s time, it’s time for me to retire.” Fr. Tom noted the official retirement age for archdiocese pries is 70, he had stayed on simply because of the short6age of priests. Fr. Tom will remain in the role Pastor Emeritus, allowing him to stay nearby, just not as often and no longer respon-sible for the long hours providing council to his flock at St. Thomas. There are many priests like Father Tom, who have lived an exemplary life of celibacy in the priesthood, so this letter is an invitation to all who read it, to take a brief opportunity to attend Mass at St. Thomas to experience this good and humble pries, preaching about the life and the word of our Lord Jesus Chri9s. During the opening precession, as Fr. Tom slowly walks up the aisle toward the altar, please stand up, for he walks with us. Joe Littwin—Palatine

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On Ash Wednesday, Lent begins. Ash Wednesday initiates the forty days of the Lenten fast, but since Sun-days are not tallied in the days of fasting, it is the sol-emn opening of the forty days of Lent. The Church has work to do today, principally the calling forward of those chosen (the proper word is elected) for the Easter sacraments. Some of those who have been catechumens may now make a transition to a new way of life as the “elect.” For them, this Lent will be a time of “purification” and “enlightenment.” For us who accom-pany them, it is a time of helping them discern God’s call and prepare for new life. This year, while the readings from the third year of the Lectionary cycle are usually read, they are set aside on certain Sundays for the benefit of the elect. We turn then to the readings from Year A, and we give those who journey to the font of baptism three extraordinary companions. In the Gospels for those days, we meet the woman of Samaria and the man born blind, and we come to the tomb of Lazarus three days after his death. Many bishops celebrate the Rite of Election on or near today, affirming God’s choice for these new faithful, and also offering them the solidarity of many compan-ions. In 2013, over 38,000 adults entered the baptismal waters in the United States, a remarkable testimony to the vigor of our tradition of receiving and nurturing adult faith. —Rev. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word ministry will continue until June of 2019. We welcome all of our children ages 6-10 to participate!

Let us continue to pray daily: “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abor-tion.” Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

January 31, 2019 Dear Fr. Michael Meany, Thank you for sponsoring the annual March for Life Chica-go. Your generous contribution \enables us to organize a highly successful witness to the beauty and dignity of human life. Over eight thousand people gathered to mourn the loss of over sixty million unborn babies since the Roe v. Wade deci-sion of 1973, and to reaffirm their commitment to build a culture of life. The young people of Crusaders for Life and WeDignify led the March through the downtown Chicago streets proclaim-ing “Life is Beautiful.” Your support of this annual reminder that life is our greatest gift is crucial to the event. It helps us provide the stage, the sound, audio-visual effects, and porto-potties. We couldn’t do it without you. God bless you for your commitment to li9fe. Ann Scheidler, And the March for Life Committee.

Even if abortion were made easy or painless for everyone, it wouldn’t change the bottom-line problem that abortion kills children. It is destroying our future generations.

We have been told that these are be-ing delivered this week.
