(AFP) - Facebook co-founderChris Hughes, who left thesocial network to work on theonline arm of BarackObama's 2008 White Housecampaign, has bought a ma-jority stake in The New Re-public magazine.

Hughes, 28, who wasFacebook chief executiveMark Zuckerberg's roommateat Harvard University, an-nounced the move in an on-line letter to readers of thepublication, a nearly century-old bastion of liberal politicalthought.

Terms of the deal were notdisclosed. The magazine isowned by an investor groupthat includes long-time editor-in-chief Martin Peretz.

"Technology's disruptionof traditional forms of mediahas led many to believe thatindependent, thoughtfulmedia institutions are on thedecline and that there are notenough readers to support se-rious reporting and analysis,"Hughes said.

"When few people are in-vesting in media institutionswith such bold aims as 'en-lightenment to the problemsof the nation,' I believe wemust," he said.

Hughes, who is assumingthe titles of publisher and ed-itor-in-chief, said the Web"has introduced a competi-tive, and some might arguehostile, landscape for long, in-depth, resource-intensivejournalism.

"But as we've seen withthe rise of tablets and mobile

reading devices, it is an ever-shifting landscape -- one thatI believe now offers opportu-nities to reinvigorate theforms of journalism that ex-amine the challenges of ourtime in all their complexity,"he said.

Hughes said the New Re-public "will aggressivelyadapt to the newest informa-tion technologies without sac-rificing our commitment toserious journalism.

"We will look to tell themost important stories in pol-itics and the arts and providethe type of rigorous analysisthat The New Republic hasbeen known for," he said, adding that the magazine "willremain a journal of progres-sive values."

Hughes left Facebook in2007 to join the Obama cam-paign and was notably respon-sible for creating the Obamacampaign website,My.BarackObama.com.

He launched a new ven-ture, Jumo, in 2010 to pro-mote charitable causes. Jumomerged with a similar organi-zation, GOOD, in August oflast year.

PARIS - Women who havejust finished ovulating are bet-ter at detecting snakes than atother times of their menstrualcycle, according to an unusualstudy that sheds light on in-built reflexes for survival.

Nobuo Masataka of Japan'sKyoto University tested 60healthy women of child-bear-ing age at three differentphases of their cycle.

They were simultaneouslyshown nine pictures, one ofwhich was a snake amongflowers while the others wereonly of flowers.

The volunteers were testedon how quickly they spottedthe serpent.

The fastest women werethose who were in the so-called luteal phase of theirmenstrual cycle, or the stagethat immediately follows ovu-lation.

The study strengthens theo-

ries that we have a "fear re-flex," or an innate response tothreat signals such as poten-tially poisonous snakes, Masa-taka believes.

Previous research has foundthis trait among infants agedas young as eight months andeven among non-human pri-mates.

Among women, the reflexseems to be influenced by hor-mone levels at a stage whenthey could be pregnant andthus be more protective to-wards their foetus, the studysuggests.

"It could contribute towomen's ability to increasetheir vigilance towards biolog-ically relevant threateningstimuli around themselvesduring this period of possiblepregnancy," it says.

The paper was published onThursday in the British journalScientific Reports.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Thehead of the Institute of Inter-national Finance, CharlesDallara, warned Fridayagainst any more eurozonesovereign debt restructuringin the wake of Greece's hugewriteoff deal.

"I would strongly discour-age other governments, otherpeoples of Europe fromgoing this route," Dallara, theIIF managing director wholed the private-sector negoti-ations with the Greek govern-ment, told CNBC television.

On Thursday the world'sbiggest debt restructuring in his-tory was completed, accepted

by an overwhelming majority ofGreece's private creditors.

But it has led to questionsas to whether Portugal or Ire-land, currently undergoingEU-International MonetaryFund bailouts like Greece, would follow suit to lowertheir debt service costs.

Asked why he would dis-courage this Dallara said:"Because it has been extraor-dinarily painful for the citi-zens of Greece, for theleaders of Greece, and for theentire eurozone: it just cast acloud over the eurozone thathas hung there for monthsand months," he said.
