Malo e lelei, Tongan Language week 2019 has begun! We arrived at school yesterday to decorated front fences,

student services, the library and St Marcellin himself!

We started the day with a traditional Kava ceremony and I thank the parents who organised this, particularly Rose

Taumoeanga and Hila Tuli. There are many more fun activities planned for the week as we celebrate our cultural

diversity and enjoy the richness it brings to our community.

This Thursday evening is our options and careers night. I really encourage all students and families from year 10

upwards to come and have a look. There are so many opportunities for young people now days and it's important

that they keep an open mind as to the field of study and work they might go into. It is also a good chance for

students to check they are choosing the right subjects if they have a particular degree in mind.

Senior practise examinations begin in just over a week. By now, students should have a good study programme

underway. It is important that families also prioritize their study time so that our students have the best chance of

success because they have been able to prepare.

Sunday, which was the first day of spring, marked the start of The Season of Creation and it runs through to

October 4th, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. The point of this season is to put into action “Laudato Si’, the

encyclical letter released by Pope Francis in 2015,which was the first papal document dedicated exclusively to the

environment,.The month-long ecumenical initiative has the theme this year, “The web of life.” This reflects the

role humanity has as stewards of creation, but also the “urgent need” to protect biodiversity. According to the

A prayer for our earth

All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of

your creatures.

You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.

Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty.

Fill us with peace, that we may live

as brothers and sisters, harming no one.

O God of the poor,

help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in

your eyes.

Bring healing to our lives,

that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty,

not pollution and destruction.

Touch the hearts

of those who look only for gain

at the expense of the poor and the earth.

Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and

contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every

creature as we journey towards your infinite light.

We thank you for being with us each day.

Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle

for justice, love and peace.

Amen.

Have a wonderful week, enjoying all things Tongan, and also enjoy the

wonderful blossom and bird call that surrounds us at present. Our Magnolia

trees this week are just stunning!

Tēnā koutou, Malo e tau lava, Magandang araw, Lagi e māmā and greetings.

Thank you for your continued efforts and hard work in guiding and supporting our students towards achieving their successes in education and other extracurricular activities thus far through the year.

In announcing Jan's appointment I said that I would keep you informed of key appointments.

Therefore I am happy to announce that the board has appointed Mr Dean Wearmouth as Acting Principal to lead our school upon Jan's departure on 13 October 2019. Jan and SLT will provide further details.

Our board is confident that Dean will continue to provide strong and effective leadership through Term 4.

As you may appreciate the recruitment of a Principal requires careful planning and consideration. The board is mindful of getting this right and I will let you know the process and timelines in the coming weeks.

Have a great end to the week and a restful weekend.

Important Notices/Ngaahi Ongongo Mahu’inga

Dear Parent / Caregiver,

Marcellin College has been informed by the Auckland Regional Public Health Service that one of our neighbouring schools has had a confirmed case of measles. As seen in the media Auckland is experiencing a serious outbreak of measles with 596 confirmed cases in the region to date.

Measles is a very infectious and can be serious enough to need hospital treatment. Measles can lead to other complications, including ear infections, diarrhoea, pneumonia, seizures, encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and sometimes death.

What we recommend: We need to have an up to date immunisation status for each student at Marcellin College.● You can do this by contacting your family doctor/ GP/ Health Provider and requesting to have their immunisation record printed, then bring this into school and drop to either the school nurse or student services.● Check your child’s immunisation status with your health provider. Students are required to have at least one of the two MMR vaccines to be able to attend school if we have confirmed case at Marcellin College.

If your child develops an illness with fever, runny nose, cough, sore red eyes and develops a rash a couple of days later please keep them away from school and take them to your family doctor. If the doctor confirms your child has measles, you will be advised how long you need to keep your child at home for.

If you have any queries, please visit the Public Health Service website - www.arphs.govt.nz - or phone (09) 623 4600. Clare Corbett, Marcellin College School Nurse, Ph: 09 6256509 ext 707 Email: [email protected]

Senior Dance ShowcaseWe had our annual Senior Dance showcase on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd August. Our students performed exceptionally well and gained great experience from this performance opportunity. Many thanks to everyone who attended the shows and supported our talented Dance students.

Miss K. Mayall, Dance Teacher

Last week on Friday 30th August we had a concert during lunch time. Students got to see some of their teachers dance.

On Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd of Augusts we had a few of our Year 7 to Yr 10 students compete in the Mathex with other schools in Auckland.

The students had a great time and experience!

This year on the 21 August, ten of our Year 12 students

were fortunate enough to attend the Leadership Diversity

Day at Zayed College for Girls.

The programme included a powhiri, and an introduction to

Maori Spirituality. This was followed by group activities

based on Religious Diversity and preserving Aotearoa New

Zealand for future generations.

The message we left with is that even though we are of

different religions, we share many of the same principles,

morals and values. It was an empowering experience.

Alumni NewsNgaahi Ongoongo Mei he Kolisi Tutuku ‘o Maselini

We would like to acknowledge our former pupils who have graduated from Victoria University of Wellington between June 2018 and May 2019. Congratulations to Tracie Wilkie for your wonderful success. In this newsletter we are sharing Tracey Wilkie’s story, an ex Marcellin College Deputy head girl. Tracey Wilkie graduated from the University of Wellington with a Master of Education and has started her PHD.

My education haerenga from Marcellin to PhDKia ora koutou,My educative haerenga (journey) began in 1996 when I was given the honour of being Deputy Head Girl of Marcellin College. As I had only been in the school for 2 years, I embraced this title with great pride as it was so unexpected. However, all was not going to go on that path initially. At the end of Year 12, I had planned to leave school and train to be a mechanic to pursue my love of knowing “how things work”, such as cars. Nevertheless, my plans were to change, as one of my well-respected Year 12 teacher’s, took me aside to have a korero regarding my thoughts for my Year 13. She had learned of my plans but wanted to hear directly from me as she had several reasons, I should stay for Year 13; all were very endearing. One particularly resonating with my desire to be a role model and make a difference in ngā rangatahi (young people) lives where I could. In hindsight, this was a pivotal point for my educative career. Consequently, I welcomed this Year 13 opportunity and opted to give 100% effort to contributing to the wider Marcellin school community.

I had no real idea what post-Year 13 had for me. How does an 18-year old? However, with this encouragement and a desire to be a positive influence for ngā rangatahi, I chose the path of primary school teaching.

I now have been in education for 20 years; 7 years full-time in the classroom and 13 out. I knew there was more for me at the 7-year mark when a chance opportunity to become a relief teacher opened. This gave me the option to pursue further education and training for my passions, which were in health and nutrition education, whilst still working with ngā rangatahi – which I adored. But I wanted to have more influence and believed that if I was following my true passions, not being confined by one curriculum or within the ‘4-walls-of-a-classroom’, I could.

13 years later, in and around other jobs and living overseas, for example, residing in an American summer camp, to a managing a café on a mountain in Canada; interwoven in all my pursuits, has been my constant burning desire to influence the lives of ngā rangatahi educative experiences. Last year I achieved my Master of Education (MEd) through Victoria University of Wellington. I took this challenge because I knew that I could further my skillset to achieve my educative goals and pathway to influence ngā rangatahi more. In a further random korero with a mentor, discussing my consistent desire to create influence, I started my PhD journey just this year in Health Education. A doctoral pathway with a working title: Achieving health equity for Māori with nutrition literacy in NZ primary schools.

My advice: trust in the opportunities that are placed in front of you and have the courage to fulfil them. Listen to those influential role models (teachers or other) around you and follow what sets YOU alight (this is your passion). Higher education is not for everyone, I certainly had no idea that a chance korero with that Year 12 teacher, that chance opportunity to be a prefect, would lead here. But I believed, trusted and had faith, that those opportunities, those “chance” korero were worth taking the risk in pursuit of my passions.
