From the Deputy Headmaster

The HSC has begun! Can I ask that the Marcellin community fi nd a litt le ti me to pray for our Year 12 students and their families as they embark on the fi nale, The HSC Examinati ons. I am sure the hard work, the sacrifi ces made, the tension felt and the late nights of study will pay off and pave the way for a new beginning.

I would advise parents to look at what lies ahead this term in your son’s assessment schedule and in the calendar on our website. Each student in Years 7-10 will have an exam block this term and Year 11 will have assessments. Students need to be implementi ng a sound study method each night. Preparati on is the key to success in just about everything we do, and exams are no excepti on. I

would encourage parents to monitor this preparati on and insist that study and revision be part of the nightly routi ne. If you have any questi ons or enquiries regarding this, please feel free to email your son’s Homeroom Teacher.

This Friday is a pupil free day as the Staff at Marcellin spend the day working on and developing the new Australian Curriculum.

Enjoy Term Four.

A prayer for Year 12 students sitting the HSC

Dear Lord,

Help our Year 12 students in their studies and in the Higher School Certi fi cate examinati ons.

Grant that they may refl ect the best of the work they have done and the best of the teaching they have received.

Lord you are the source of light and wisdom:

Graciously let the ray of your wisdom penetrate the depths of these Year 12 students.

Grant them a sharp sense of understanding, a retenti ve memory, and the ability to grasp concepts correctly.

Grant them the talent of being exact in their explanati ons, and the ability to write, clearly and with good sense.

We ask you, Lord, to bless their beginnings, to direct their progress, and to help them in their completi ons.

Amen.

Marcellin College Major Building Program It’s getti ng closer! We’re only moments away from the approval of our Development Applicati on (DA) and as well as that, we’ve almost fi nished our documentati on so that we can go to tender as soon as the DA approval is received. So what does this building project include? 1. The conversion of classrooms and storage space in the Marist Centre to create teaching spaces for Food Technology, Hospitality and Drama.2. The demoliti on of the current canteen and the constructi on of a new one more in the style of a cafeteria/ shop with a greater range of healthier food.3. New classrooms to replace those lost in the Marist Centre conversion that are more fl exible style learning spaces.4. The enclosure of the Year 7 rooft op playground to create an exam hall and multi -purpose space.5. The constructi on of more rooft op recreati onal space to gain what we lose in the conversion menti oned previously.6. The extension and renovati on of the Library to create a much more pleasant and functi onal space. The whole project is in the vicinity of $5,000,000 and in a recent meeti ng with the architect and Catholic Educati on Offi ce staff we were asked to cut the total cost by $400 000. In looking for the savings, cuts to the interior fi t-out of the Library were suggested. I objected strongly; I want an excellent Library that will be comfortable and conducive to individual and collaborati ve study. Instead of making cuts to the Library I promised the architect that I would fi nd $100 000. That’s what the Walkathon will do for us – change a functi onal space into an aestheti cally pleasing one. So get behind the Walkathon and help make MCR a more beauti ful school.

Journeying Together Immersion

During the September holidays, I parti cipated in an Immersion with fellow teachers from the Sydney Archdiocese. The purpose of this immersion was to develop insights into, and an appreciati on of, the culture of the Aboriginal community in Alice Springs. Over the course of the 9 days we visited various towns to sit and listen with the Indigenous people, to learn their stories, and work in solidarity with the St Vincent de Paul Society and the Sisters of Charity to provide food and resources to those needing a hand.

Whilst at Santa Teresa, a Marist Indigenous Mission, we were fortunate to parti cipate in a smoking ceremony and to speak to local women as they told their story through their artwork. The week culminated in a visit to Uluru and Kata Tjuta, where we were treated to a beauti ful sunrise and sunset, and slept under the stars.

Personally, this experience has been invaluable in developing my appreciati on for the spiritual wealth of the Indigenous people, yet understanding the material poverty that exists within their communiti es.

Poverty and severe hardship aff ect more than a million Australians. Around the world, more than a billion people are desperately poor.

Some facts about Poverty, hardship and educati on:• About 10% of Australian children (1/2 million children)

live in a family suff ering poverty or serious hardship.• More than one quarter of all homeless people are

families with children.• Social disadvantage is the main cause of diff erences

between children’s level of educati onal achievements• 40% of students from disadvantaged backgrounds

leave school before Year 12, but only 20% of students from high socio-economic backgrounds.

• Children who do not complete Year 12 or equivalent are twice as likely to become unemployed as those who do.

Students at Marcellin will be discussing some of these issues in their Pastoral and Religious Educati on Lessons and helped raise money by purchasing ice blocks aft er school this week.
