The Outlook

Glenn’s Corner

As we finish up our series on “Not a Fan”

on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings I

have been praying that God will move in all our

hearts here at First Christian. We are so

much more than what we give ourselves credit

for much of the time.

It was such a privilege to have Hammer

here from our mission in Togo, Africa. The

challenge he laid down to us was tremendous.

If you were not here that Sunday or can’t

remember, the challenge was for each one of

us to reach out with the Gospel to a friend

this year. Each one of us taking the Gospel to

King and inviting someone to Church, praying

for the person you chose if it is hard to talk

to them, or asking a leader or friend to help

you share the Gospel message. We are not

exempt from this mission.. It is our calling in

Christ.

One thing “Not a Fan” taught was we all

have a choice. That choice is either refuse

the Gospel message of Jesus or to follow Him.

Many of us consider “Follow Him” to be

getting dunked in baptism and just show up at

Church and that is living the Christian life.

Jesus only has control over us for a few hours

a week while at Church.

When we really step out on faith is day we

decide Jesus will lead us at work, the gym,

the ball field, the civic club and at home. We

let no closet of our life be left unturned.

Jesus can begin to permeate all of our life.

Our fears, inhibitions, rough edges, money,

family and this community.

May we truly follow Christ in all we do.

Following His Lead,

Glenn

Luke’s Letter to the Flock

I would like to start with a special thank you

to all who said prayers for our trip to Durham for

CCYC. The Lord answered those prayers and we

got there and back with no problems! CCYC was an

amazing conference this year! The students and the

adults alike were challenged on another level in our

faith.

Ajai Lall, is the founder of Central India

Christian Mission and he was an excellent speaker.

He challenged and helped us to understand that we

as Christians have a Choice and a responsibility to

be overjoyed at the fact that we are Citizens of the

Kingdom of God! Encourage your students to keep

that joyous Citizenship intact in the months to fol-

low!

We have a busy few months coming up and I

am so excited to see what God has in store for the

FCC Student Ministry! Flyers are up around the

church explaining the upcoming events this spring

and summer! Please take a chance to stop and look

at them and encourage your students to sign up!

Thank You We want to thank you from the bottom

of our hearts. The food and things at

Christmas were such a blessing. The

latest cards at Valentines from the

kids really encouraged Hoover and I.

Thank you for all your prayers and

thoughts. Hoover & Francis Brown

Dear Church Family,

Love can not express the numerous visits, love and kindness shown Shirley during her

struggle with Alzheimer's over the past years. That love was again poured out last

month when she passed. Sharon, Larry D., and I can not express enough appreciation

for the food, love, prayers and warmth shown by this congregation during our loss.

Please know we love each and every one of you and thank you again for all the

flowers, love and support. The Wise Family

Wednesday Nights at 8pm

New members welcome!

No experience is necessary! This is a great time

to join and be apart of this ministry!

A ten-year old boy named Sam Hurley, scantily clad, was alone in the woods and was about to “bed down” for the evening. Day after day he had walked from one house to another, searching for work in exchange for food to eat. As he found a place to sleep he heard a cata-mount in the distance. The call of the catamount … coming closer and closer … drove him to call to God for help. He prayed for God’s protection throughout the night. He told God if he would spare him from the catamount, he would build a place for boys and girls like himself. Sam did make it through the night … and through many more. After some very rough be-ginnings, he became a successful businessman. He never attended school. At the age of 22 he married the love of his life, Jane Looney. Jane taught him how to read and write. Sam was successful and, of course, never gave his promise to God a second thought … until a little boy (much like himself) came into his office in the courthouse in Grundy, Virginia, and asked if Mr. Hurley would take him into his house and keep him because he didn’t have anywhere to go. He told the boy he had seven children of his own and had taken in nine others and he did not have room for him. Later that same day when Sam went out of the courthouse to lunch, he noticed the little boy sitting up against the courthouse crying. Then, he remembered his promise. He immediately visited his lawyer who completed the necessary paperwork for starting Grundy Academy, which later became Mountain Industrial Institute … which is now Mountain Mission School. It is estimated that over 20,000 children have received care at MMS since its founding in 1921. Cynthia S. Rodda serves as the school’s fifth president. She succeeded her father, Dr. James M. Swiney, who was president from 1983 – 2003. The campus first consisted of one building and now contains Hurley Hall for Girls (3 sepa-rate residences), Parker Hall for Boys (4 separate residences) and Toddler Hall (for boys and girls under 7 years) plus an educational building, vocational and fine arts building, campus chapel and administration building. Typically, 200-230 resident students (ages 18 months to 20 years) reside on campus.
